What I love about Guthrie is how he employs a higher order of technique to enhance the musicality. So many bozos who arrive at a similar level of technical acumen have no sense of musicality whatsoever, their playing is simply a demonstration of how fast they can fly through tonally irrelevant arpeggios. GG is quite different. He uses speed as a legit compositional tool to make great, creative, expressive music.
Guthrie was plugged directly into the Cornford Hellcat. The room reverb with slight slapback was added at the desk afterward to help the guitar sound sit in the mix. The 1 x 12 cab loaded with a celestion Vintage 30 was mic'ed with a SM 57 and an Octava 102. Mainly SM 57 used. Hope that helps. Jan @ Bluesjamtracks.
I remember watching this for the first time when it first dropped 16 years ago. All these years later and I still can't comprehend how he flows so effortlessly through this. It's just astounding, the vocabulary and phrasing is unlike anything we've ever seen, still to this very day.

Some of the baddest blues shred I've seen is what he does at 1:57 then answers octave higher. It really is a simple lick.. but it's the fact he even thought of the question answer as it phrased.
