No one would suggest that he isn't technically brilliant, but I find I sympathize with those who are left cold by his music. I'm awed by his chops while simultaneously finding his music utterly forgettable. It's the same way I'm thrilled by a fast roller coaster only while on it and forget about it later, whereas I'm charmed by something simple like the Peter Pan ride at Disneyland which impresses a memory in my mind that will remain with me a lifetime and which I will forever remember with fondness. Those who are easily impressed with technical ability are unable to comprehend why everyone else doesn't share their enthusiasm, and it's a difficult thing to explain because aesthetic value is abstract and not subject to quantification or empirical analysis, which is why there's little point in debating the issue. It's easier to simply say "I like it" or "I don't care for it" and leave it at that.
I don't entirely disagree, but if all you hear in his playing is technical chops, you couldn't possibly be a guitarist. the subtleties he weaves throughout his music and control over the string(s)/pitch/harmony make for some incredibly beautiful playing that I'm not convinced you even hear. it sounds like you hear technical wankery + some filler in betwer a nd that's not a good assessment, subjective or otherwise
I agree completely, I'm not English speaking so that I can't express really what I mean but simply this solo has no emotion at all just perfect technique but music and arts in general are not about that.
Simon Rogers really? Holdsworth’s playing always just sounded like emotionally devoid legato speed runs to me. Any song in particular that sounds like this?
He was talking about voicings, more than likely the ones used in the first opening measures. I have no doubt Guthrie took from holdsworth, many guitarists have.
I have watched this so many times and still cannot get through a day without watching it again. And this guy could play circles around anyone on Rolling Stones top 100 guitar players. Nobody on that list is worthy of being his roadie.
The trouble with that view is it doesn't necessarily make for a good band, it's all about the chemistry of the people, and their connection to the music, rather than their individual technique.
Reminds me of a modern SRV so much. I love it. I'm glad there are guitarist out there still pursuing the more emotional blues route. I love shredding as well but this style is just so much less common / appreciated.
He's truly amazing! He's just amazing! Unbelievable! He's a guitar genius, a wizard! He knows every way of playing, guitar has no secrets for someone like him! Luckily there's Guthrie! Thank you so much!

uggh, don't think so. Creativity thoughout the song didn't happen. It's like walking on a moonlit beach, then the sun explodes on the horizon and your totally unsettled.
Say what you want guys, 0:47 - 1:00 I had to shed tears which music doesn't make me do often. Guthrie is one of the best at doing it, for me. I think that's the whole idea of "emotional", it differs per person. For some people it does absolutely nothing, and for some it touches something deep inside their soul. Let's appreciate that Guthrie is able to do that for a lot of people :).
Here’s my problem with calling this over technical and not emotional-it seems like if a fast guitar solo is played clean, people start saying there’s no emotion. Like the Since I’ve Been Loving You solo has jimmy page playing as fast as he can for a lot of it (not as clean as Guthrie though-not trying to roast page it’s just different eras) and you’d be crazy to say that solo has no emotion. Where the similarity lies is that the notes that are longer are given more importance and Guthrie and page both target those ones and really make them fucking sing. The fast sections give contrast to those moments and make them even more fucking epic than they would be otherwise while at the same time having their own emotional quality-the fast sections build tension so that those moments (usually it’s those big ass bends lmao) have as much impact as possible. You can find emotional value in every part of a good solo like this; you just can’t get caught up on how technically proficient someone is. Maybe that’s the real problem with playing fast and clean-people get caught up on your technical ability and can’t look past it to find your message. It’s there though... trust me.
I agree. I will admit I don’t get any emotion from this solo, nothing, no goosebumps and believe me, I get them a lot. All of you guys are forgetting the most important factor: tone. His guitar sounds clean through out the whole solo, like you said, I feel no struggle, no deep feelings, just clean notes. Also his guitar does note have a special tone that really helps create emotion.
Most people who say this sort of stuff are elitest players who are nearly as talented or educated as the people they are commenting about. Even the dryest most technical playing conveys emotion imo. Just because some people are masters of it doesn't make other players playing any less emotional imo. Very well said.
Agreed. Those that say there's no emotion in his playing are just low life jealous losers. There's feeling in every note, the sequence he chooses to play, bending of course, the dynamic, the duration, speed at which he bends the notes, and so on.
@@facufacufa by saying no need to compare, you are eliminating both Clapton's and Govan's own unique playstyle. they are definitely different and one is clearly better than the other. But thats what make them, them.
It seems that playing guitar with speed and technique gets instant reaction of having no emotions. I wonder why it isn't the same case with violin and piano. Anyway, this isn't my favorite Guthrie solo, but I have to say he is in a league of his own.
Man, he's so good! He has what a lot of "shredder" types sometimes lack that makes too many of them uninteresting to listen to. He's got songwriting and musical chops. It isn't just mindless shred (and he has talked about this sort of playing before in interviews), it has great dynamics and melody and goes places and makes it just awesome to listen to. And I'm not one of those "technique=no emotion" types either.
I am pleased to see so many other people discovering this true talent. I love it when I point friends in Guthrie's direction and they are blown away; especially kids for whom auto-tuned mainstream rubbish is their daily fodder.
Jesus Christ! I am at a loss for words. . So here is a pancake recipe. Ingredients 1 c. all-purpose flour 2 tbsp. sugar 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1 1/4 c. milk or buttermilk 3 tbsp. butter, melted 1 large egg vegetable oil for brushing pan Directions In large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add milk, butter and, egg; stir until flour is moistened. Heat 12-inch nonstick skillet or griddleover medium heat until drop of water sizzles; brush lightly with oil. In batches, scoop batter by scant 1/4-cupfuls into skillet, spreading to 3 1/2 inches each. Cook 2 to 3 minutes or until bubbly and edges are dry. With wide spatula, turn; cook 2 minutes more or until golden. Transfer to platter or keep warm on a cookie sheet in 225°F oven. Repeat with remaining batter, brushing griddle with more oil if necessary.

I have watched this so many times and still cannot get through a day without watching it again. And this guy could play circles around anyone on Rolling Stones top 100 guitar players. Nobody on that list is worthy of being his roadie.
You really ought to give credit to the name of the whole band, The Aristocrats. The drummer and bassist are also incredible musicians.
😭He needs to cry while his playing to make it more emotional with facial expressions
He's truly amazing! He's just amazing! Unbelievable! He's a guitar genius, a wizard! He knows every way of playing, guitar has no secrets for someone like him! Luckily there's Guthrie! Thank you so much!
Amazin’. Solos for Steve Wilsons tracks a fantastic…beauty and beast personified!
Isn't he the lead guitarist of steve vai?
Are you ok dude. Like actually
Hahaha lol
Not sure if seriously serious or just a supermegaultrafegittroll...🤔
How r the commenters thinking this dude ^ is stupid or a troll... obvious irony is obvious
I get ya. In the 2nd section, he did "Vai" for attention.
Guthrie play with Steven Wilson again.......
so lucky i got to meet hime outside a venue in milwaukee
Thanks for sharing Bruce, awesome tone and fret board work. Great guitarist.
I keep coming back to this video every now and then. Absolute wizard!
He is not human. Guthrie Govan = Beast on Guitar. He either Inspires you to: Practice-more, or just makes-you-wanna: Quit Playing - he is so Phenomenal. One of the Best Guitar Players on this Planet.
uggh, don't think so.
Bading
0:40 Marco Minnemann's sideway glance to Guthrie, surprised, amused and respectful at the same time.
The song is named Flatlands by The Aristocrats
Just the number of textures in this short solo is enough to realize how good he is.
They're called "guitar licks" because you can taste how good they sound. 😐
Guitar soup
Outstanding ! Your hard work shows . Your drummer and bassist really compliment You .
He really is the most amazing guitarist ever.
Jezzus that escalated very quickly like and argument with my missus 🤣🌟👍he really is unbelievable and such feeling behind every note
I think so at the moment.
Never heard anyone that precise and have the mastery of that instrument like Guthrie
Yeah but Jimmy page is playing in the context of a great song. This is just a wank off look what I can do session.
Perfect example. Lotta words. ( And all of 'em right !)
Crazy solo...he's untouchables
70's "Clapton Is god"
2019. JAJAJAJA!! Really? Govan Is MOZART OF THE GUITAR.
both are gods, no need to compare
@@facufacufa by saying no need to compare, you are eliminating both Clapton's and Govan's own unique playstyle. they are definitely different and one is clearly better than the other. But thats what make them, them.
Clapton was god was the 60s luis
@@toparky2470 that's a whole lotta bs. You cannot compare one from the other art is subjective.
This is the single most descriptive piece of music (guitar!!!) I've ever heard. I can see every scene...
Spectacular Guthrie.
When Watching the masters play there is always fun and freedom in their expressions. They are unappologetically themselves.
It seems that playing guitar with speed and technique gets instant reaction of having no emotions. I wonder why it isn't the same case with violin and piano.
Anyway, this isn't my favorite Guthrie solo, but I have to say he is in a league of his own.
I also find it interesting to see that once a guitar player achieves a certain technical level, the other musicians tend to bash him.
@David Sim Music countless examples on this page
Man, he's so good! He has what a lot of "shredder" types sometimes lack that makes too many of them uninteresting to listen to. He's got songwriting and musical chops. It isn't just mindless shred (and he has talked about this sort of playing before in interviews), it has great dynamics and melody and goes places and makes it just awesome to listen to.
And I'm not one of those "technique=no emotion" types either.
I know what you mean, there are dozens of UA-cam guitar players which can play any of Govan's songs, but they never wrote a song.
Or they never wrote a good one. Ha ha!
First few parts reminds me of Jeff Beck :)
Definitely! Was going to comment that! This is very Jeff Beck in some areas 🎸
And Eric Johnson with those interval choices and tone :)
@@alexwr Even more Eric Johnson, but mainstream audience knows Jeff Beck more than Eric. Underratted genius.
I am pleased to see so many other people discovering this true talent. I love it when I point friends in Guthrie's direction and they are blown away; especially kids for whom auto-tuned mainstream rubbish is their daily fodder.
So excited to see these guys in a few weeks. Best guitarist of all time
Guthrie will forever be my favorite guitarist of all time.
Wow, that is coming from some higher state of consciousness
Jesus Christ!
I am at a loss for words.

Love Marco man, glad he has with Guthrie, he was so underrated but glad he found that place to show his feel on the drums. Still love him for the metal, but this guy earned his stripes man.
Flatlands, what a beautiful piece
These fusion musicians can play millions of notes per second, but at the same time keep it very emotional.
So emotional it put a filter over the camera
This is soul and technique married into one
only technique

Jesus. I'm a 35 year player. Always heard this guy's name come up but the idea of checking him out always exhausted me, I've had my hands full all my life with Satch and Bratta and Zakk and Randy and EVH. This came up as a suggestion from the last vid I was watching so I let it ride. I can never unsee or unhear this. Here I go down the rabbit hole. sigh. Back to the drawing board.
Haha
Guth is so nuts. I love hearing something and saying wait what! and having to rewind.and then also to find out it was improv.king. I wish this man got more love on the global scene.
Other emotional solos by Guthrie Govan include Drive Home and Regret #9
sweet fancy MOSES...
WTF
how can it be?
could you imagine if he grew up w the things that influenced you?
Bonus points for the Seinfeld reference!
When a master of rhythm meets a master of the right notes. ..
I don’t have the words to describe how good this is. It genuinely makes me emotional every time I watch it. Just awesome 💜
One of my favorites of y’all’s
