Hey guys, if your interested in cool prog rock prog metal music please check out the EP SPHINX and videos on my channel? Would mean a lot. Enjoy!
PRO TIPS:
- pay attention to the underlying chord the band is playing
- Pay attention to the scale choice within the chords
- Note choices on long notes, are they chord tones? Are they dissonant?
- For quick sections, START SLOWLY!

What's your favorite?
If you enjoy guitar, prog rock or prog metal, please check out my music! Would mean a lot!
John Petrucci 😒😒🤣😂
I liked buckethead the most
Steve Howe, Buckethead, Bill Frisell, Joe Pass, Adrian Legg.
Buckethead was my favorite
Let's have some George Lynch, Nuno Bettencourt, Prince, Alex Lifeson, Jake E. Lee & Warren DeMartini.
Guthrie has completed guitar and is just doing side quests
Yes
That's right! :D
😂😂😂
I bless you and you blessed comment with a blessed 100th like.
@@steevinsuhgahl1161 i removed my like just to fuck with your comment but the internet happened, so here’s my like again
I love how there are tabs, as if I were able to learn this
😂😂😂😂
lol
Yeah, the Edge part is kicking my ass.
@@HikoSeijuroXIII Dude, right? I keep blowing on the damn string but it just won't sustain nearly that long.
What? I'm a student, I can't afford an e-bow...
He must be really good that a photo of him will play anything.
This is so ridiculous. Thanks for the chuckle!
and u must be higher that the fucking darkness of the deep space
...but, y'know, we all know that HE can play anything...😅
LOVE that he ended with an extended tribute to Hendrix! Much respect!!!
Enorme.Soy un atrevido. No escuché a Hendrix, el no tenía esa velocidad
Okay, I'll be THAT guy.
First, spell the man's name right, he earned it. Secondly, that buzzy, modern compressed sound is not appropriate for playing Jimi. Guthrie nailed a lot of the licks though. To be honest, Jimi's tone seems to stump most of today's players. It could be that Hendrix made sure you could hear his beloved Stratocaster more than the amp melting on the back line. Aficionados who've listened to thousands of hours of Hendrix (I know you're out there) would notice the difference in tone. Still, for real, I am totally amazed every time I see one of Guthrie's videos, but this "Jimmy tribute" sort of missed the mark for me.
Jimi Hendrix is the root of all the guitar legends that came after him...
Many were inspired directly by him, and those who were not, were inspired by others who's inspiration was Hendrix...
All the guitar roads lead to Hendrix!
@@sixtobuschiazzo8391bruh escucha la canción come on, si tiene velocidad
The transition from The Edge to B.B. King was so smooth.
that picture of Yngwie Malmsteen is just too appropriate... its perfect
It's missing "lick my shoe" written on his sole. Or words to that effect..
guy tabs out some of the most insane guitar playing, by perhaps the greatest guitar player alive, all for free, and people just whine about spelling "Jimi" wrong. just say thank you, you ungrateful swine
It's a big error
Not everyone is a Hendrix fan. It happens, fuck, I spelled Berklee wrong (Like an IDIOT) a few months ago, and got crucified for it. I make it a point to have proper spelling and grammar and I fucking love Berklee. Great job with the tabs dude, GG is a monster from another world, and it looked REAL accurate to how the original would play it. I was waiting for his take on Petrucci...I'm sure it's ridiculous.
@@classicartfoundation639 fuck off you absolute twat
Danny Nichols “stupid americans.” Guess what, pinhead, Jimi Hendrix is american. You called the person you’re so defensive over stupid, you mindless twat. And you’re calling a school which legends such as petrucci graduated from less relevant? Fuck off.
You're an idiot. I've played guitar for 26 years...Jimi doesn't do ANYTHING for me. Berklee on the other hand is a world class place to start a career in music. You're such a fool.
Just incredible how Guthrie could perfectly capture the essence and feel of 20 different guitar legends.
This just proves how Guthrie is simply a GUITAR GOD, in the pure meaning of the word.
Capture the essence and feel? No, for me, that's what he fails to capture. He's got only the notes.
Years of ears training and playing (transcribing many licks for magazines). He's one crazy-ass-skilled dude.
He is a guitar players guitar player...
The Knopfler part was really nice.
Guthrie Govan is amazing! He can do everything. Play anything. And in such a tasteful way. He inspires me.
Live the knopfler section, such a unique tone and style very well captured
Totally agree spot on impression, think he lifted a lick from a sultans of swing performance at the end aswell but it sounded dead on
@Philip Schlaepferthat's true, but it's not knopfler writing it for one. And also it's more about trying to capture an essence of the player
@Greg Elchert no its not, it's different if you listen to both tracks again. Govan version is descending triplets and knopflers is ascending and descending groups of four notes.
Guthrie's got great technique and is a very accomplished guitarist but Knopfler's got soul - and that's the important part. Knopfler's playing sends shivers up my back.
@@robertstone1409 very true, I think Guthrie is probably the best Guitarist alive and mable all time. As in he has the highest level of mastery with the instrument out of any player I've seen. But yeah in terms of style knopfler just has it down in my view, clean and concise, says all he needs to say without playing too fast or too extravagant
I'm just speechless at how he can play all of those masters' styles with perfection and their own flavor as well.
i think he cant cross his hand to play clean and fast like mr. batio or even fast overunder,
its jz my guess
ua-cam.com/video/yfsU5KfF6LE/v-deo.html
YEEEAH!!!!
He can't , though lol
I like the way he kind of both honours and pokes fun at Zakk Wylde here.
mano a mano pokes fun at him? How so?
@@theavocadoguitarist.1823 by over using pinch harmonics like Zakk does.
Man i couldnt stop laughing.. good its just not me to notice
im pretty sure that was just yourself
That was the only entry that made me crack up , the others were spot on.
This is amazing, Thank you Guthrie Govan for your help and excellent impressions!
Not only did you capture everyone's style but you nailed their tone as well. Awesome!
Its ridiculous how he seems to capture the essence of every guitarists playing with every tune.
WHAT ?!?!?! No Kmac ?
I know right?
Smh rn
Our memelord deserves a spot on this list!
Too difficult to replicate so he had to be left out for respect purposes; didn’t want to butcher his style lol
Guthrie Govan has gotta be the best guitar player alive. The man can play any style on Earth, has chops that rival any of the shredder kings, insanely well-rounded technique in every area, knows theory forwards backwards and sideways.... he can just do it all
Lucas: I am enthralled by the great playing: the rendition of these super guitarists' work, and the super scoring musical notation. One can see the genius of all. Perfect. Priceless.
Thanks my man!
Well. This Guthrie Govan is a soooo goood all round player. And even have his own sound. Cannot understand how he does do this. Great guitar player!!!!! Love it
Yeah but can 20 guitarists play Guthrie Govan ?
OMG 1k likes!!
No
No
hard no
nope
SawrioSarangi in the world, probably over 1000, hehe, but famous guitarrista? Hmm i don’t think many, the deceased Shawn lane could’ve ofc, hes a big inspiration for gg, maybe bucket head...
Lots of my favorite guitarists are here (including YOU, sir)!
You nailed every one of their “tendencies”, in a great way!
Made me smile with each one 😎✌️
Excellent work. He’s amazing and such a well spoken polite man.
Jesus that Gilbert one was magical
Watching GG covering The Edge is like watching Picasso fill in a child's colouring book.
Yet the edge has created far more memorable and notable music
@@Two_Seat_Pete_FatA55 Because the edge writes mainstream music and clearly Guthrie Govan isn't trying to be mainstream.
@Obi-WanKannabis he would if he could but he cant write the music
@@Two_Seat_Pete_FatA55 Or maybe it's just not the kind of music he likes writing? Not everyone just desires maximising fame and recognition, some people want to play their own thing, despite it being less popular.
@@Obi-WanKannabis Best nick ever.
Wowza! That's my new phrase for when I'm really really sincerely impressed. Very Cool! thank you very much for sharing!
This is absolutely nuts, hilarious and amazing all in one! Extreme talent plus dedication: Govan.
Really cool with the tab underneath. And Guthrie must be like one of the most competent guitar players ever!
Well, what do you know?
He does David Gilmour so well too...what an extensive knowledge of technique and finesse.
Awesome video. Recently very original and technical. I watched it many times. Bravo !!!!!!
I've legit been looking for this video since 2011! Guitar World briefly mentioned it in their introductory issue to Guthrie back then. Props!
That switch from the Edge to BB King was nice
Somehow, getting the Eric Johnson and Sonny Landreth bits right impressed me the most. Amazing!
Thank you so much for this! Very cool. So inspiring!
Woooow !!!! That was incredible !!! He even got the right tones. Loved it !!!
Would’ve loved to see Jason Becker, Buckethead, Dimebag Darrell , and Nuno Bettencourt.
Or even Damian Salazar.
@@tomomalley8674 yes him too, very underrated guitarist
I was waiting for Michael Schenker
Definitely Nuno
@Gabriel Freitas Greg is way better jazz fusion guitar player than Govan!
i love how guthrie’s style is still audible in every part
Madness, such a great allround guitarist this guy, amazing.
oh yes that mellow Timeless Classic sound of One Sweet Baby James🤗🎶🎸
Amazing playing, and really nailed most of these. I didn't think the Jimi and Yngwie parts really sounded like them specifically, but just more general fuzz blues (with some shreddy parts) and a general neoclassical shred lead.
Govan is a true master of his instrument - one of the very best and most versatile rock guitarists alive today.
thanks man. wanted to play that james taylor part for so long, but was too lazy to figure it out. pumped the algorithm led me here.
Legends played by a legend ! Even i I don't love all those guitarists, it's such a huge pleasure to listen to this fabulous interpretation !
For my money, Guthrie is the Greatest guitarist alive right now.
I think greatest shredder is accurate, but I dont think you can call anybody the greatest guitarist period
His was my old teacher and I agree. He rarely shredded when teaching just played the most amazingly tasteful things. A true master of all styles
Ron Jarzombek is
@@shanepartridge2744 I applaud your maturity
I have a dvd of mp3 singles and albums I cannot do without and have them backed up on a couple of dvd's. his erotic cakes and his fellow guitar techniques teacher, shawn baxter, are on it.
Jimi was amazing..it is apparent everyones playing all goes back to him
This was so awesome to watch and listen to.
Epic edit of styles, best video!!!
Guthrie is the complete Guitarist for me. A virtuoso with astonishing versatility. Amazing live too🤘
Noticed how he saved best for last. Although my fav style cover was David Gilmour. Had he covered John Mayer it would have sounded a lot like BBKing
GG certainly one of the very best, tabs are great too 👍👍👍
First listened to that 10 years ago if i'm right, i'm so happy to be able to listen it again... And damn, I still remember all the licks. Thanks! :D
WOW! BB KING
That was awesome! It highlighted two things for me; what an amazing player Guthrie is, and what an un-amazing player I am.
Ditto!
I know...it's always a tossup between "I'm gonna go practice more" and "I give up"
Its truly amazing to see him nail all those different players. God skills
Great arrangement but more so it was sooooo much fun to listen to!!!
Guthrie is a legitimate guitar god! It's like having Petrucci, Vai, Malmsteen, Gilbert, Hendrix, Di Meola....all in one guy! He can play it all!
I saw a ten years old kid play "Wonderful slippery thing" better than him:)))
@@davidderoux7552 How very interesting 💩
Not really. Came off very sterile to me.
Aww mann... I was waiting to hear his impression of John Petrucci :'((( Beautiful video! Thanks for sharing
Jeanderson Barros Cândido pois eh mano! Eu fiz uns dois covers dele, depois da uma olhada 😊🎸
Jeanderson Barros Cândido according to him petrucci was not innovative enough well its his opinion ots ok
Just take Satriani's part and double the speed.
lets be serious here, there is no way anyone could impersonate Petrucci, he is just to good
@@myself3209 Not so; GG is much much better than Petrucci.
This is the Guitar Jamboree to the tenth power. Loved it!!
This all legendary !
I love my shred and metal playing but this just goes to show that the tone and playing of BB King was utter genius, I actually sat up straighter on the first note!
mfw my teacher says "Your playing reminds me of BB King!" Im like, "Who? What King? Elvis?"" lol I'm a skinny white boy from the burbs who grew up on ozzy, vh, and satch. I aint got no soul! rip RBK!
I found the "the edge" section absolutely hilarious.
Same for the Tom Morello section. The two greatest participation ribbon guitarists out there, IMO.
@@Free2shred00 Can't knock Morello for his inventiveness, most people hadn't heard a guitar make some of those sounds before he came along, and some of his riffs are undeniably sick regardless of how simple the may be to play.
@@leerobbo92 He is good at what he does. And he knows how to write a catchy tune, too. But I do think he's waaaay overrated though, at least with regards to his playing ability. His not a slouch, and definitely knows his way around the fretboard, but I don't think he deserves to be mentioned among the greats.
@@Free2shred00 Oh yeah, I totally agree. Anything that has him anywhere near the top 100 on lists is just ridiculous really, unless it's purely a list for the best riff-writers or something (and even then he wouldn't be near the top).
john m I have some friends that consider Tom Morello to be their ‘favourite guitarist’. It’s hard to fight the natural instinct of an eye roll and a deep sigh when I hear them praise that overrated mediocrity.
Sofa-King wild when he gets to Jimi Hendrix and just nails his sound. He nailed every bodies sound. Throughout the entire roll of impressions. He is a fetching genius.
Class. Simply put.
Funny how fresh the Jimi stuff still sounds all these years later.
Notice that he couldn't play Lil Wayne.
I swear to you I can listen to this all day.Video got over too quick.Guthrie is such a good guitar impressionist!
Mind boggling skills🙏🤟
Eric Johnson is the most touchy guitarist, very clean, playing with heart and subtility
I'm blown away every time I listen to this. Guthrie is spot on with the styles (especially Jimi Hendrix) and the tones are close enough to tell who he is copying no matter what notes he played. Guthrie is one of the most talented electric guitar players in the world. Now someone needs to help him write a hit album and put his ass on the map. This guy is way to good to go largely unnoticed.
He doesn't need any help writing imo. The Aristocrats are an incredible band and deserve more recognition anyway
@@melvesh is on point! Go Listen to The Aristocrats, and then go check the tour dates. They are a gem live.
Great! Thanks for sharing!
Totally love it !
The Satriani tab was insane 😂
Great work thank you soo much
Deadly man..awesome
I’m absolutely in love with those chord voicings during the Eric Johnson intro. So freaking good
Yeah, stuff was dead on!
Right? Omg so good!
I had been thniking for years that Paul Gilbert was probably the most versatile guitar player out there. Well, now after seeing this display, and also after having had the opportunity to see The Aristocrats play live, I am beginning to seriously question my previous thoughts... Jesus, this guy is insane!!🤪🤪
Thanks for sharing this
OMG... Guthrie is FREAKING AMAZING !!!!!! I love his videos, and is he is quite unmatched in ability to be honest, and his talent in linguistic vocabulary never ceases to amaze me. He's not only one of the best guitar players on the planet, you can't turn away when he's just talking about things such as 'scales' (as boring as they may sound from another source)..
Guthrie we all LOVE YOU brother, you are AMAZING!!!! Rock on my friend.
Honestly my favourite part of this was hearing the Jimi part, and hearing the SRV from the Jimi, and then the Mayer from the SRV. Was like listening to three generations in one.
Idk, it sounded too muddy to me.
@@vs4571 Agreed
I had my wife hold the phone and I tried to name every player without looking. Every one of them is so spot on that it was actually easy to do. Each example was a perfect example of their tone and technique down to their signature nuances that make their sound and style what they are. So incredibly impressive. But that comes as no surprise. GG you are such an inspiration.
Very cool video. You are masterclass.
Great player, Really nice guy!
Unbelievable! I wished at the end he'd go into SRV! :D
I was really looking forward for him to play a JASON BECKER tune...
indeed :(
He played already in JB song
@@ranajoyshil He meant that he should've played a Jason Becker style lick on this song.
Govan hates sweep picking .
love you man
That was pretty amazing.
Man this talent is just overwhelming, possibly the most talented guitar player ever.... Simply genius.
amazing guitar playing, an audible costume party.
I remember when this issue came out. I learned all these (as well as everything else in those magazines) as I was in the middle of my intense guitar training and Guthrie helped me a lot. I'm glad he's gone on to become well-known in the guitar community.
omg what a monster !!!
awesome
Great video. I missed Paco de Lucía's spanish guitar.
I am not alone on this earth after all
Guthrie just understands guitar on a level beyond anyone
Beyond anyone is a stretch. Tosin Abasi from Animals As Leaders I think takes it farther into originality. Don't think GG could play him either for the most part.
Perfect video.
learning so much on this
govan's like the Ditto of guitar players, i wonder if a master ball will work on him
While there is ( and will never be ) A Greatest guitar player, G.G. is certainly One of the best players on the planet. If you like acoustic guitar, then check out Tommy Emmanuel - too. Both . . . Very Inspiring.
Fabulous..love💛💛
Guthrie as Knopfler is amazing! Oh my gosh.
