      My dog bites me and barks at me when I am leaving the house or when she is in a tizzy and thinks I am leaving the house. I try to ignore her and that worked at first but now it doesn't it. In fact her sister is now 'modelling' her behavior and has taken to biting me too! They are very rambunctious and wrestle each other all the time so the 'ouch' or 'yelp' tricks mean nothing to them. They are the loudest dogs I have ever seen so my noise isn't even on their radars.

      Just some ideas. Where does your puppy take his nap. Is he sleeping in a crate or on the floor. Puppies sometimes don’t sleep soundly when people are walking by them. Maybe puppy is not getting a sound sleep. When puppy wakes up, put a leash and harness on and take outside to potty. Maybe when puppy needs to peeor poop, your puppy bites. Or maybe you have responded to biting by taking puppy outside. Puppy always needs to pee when waking. Then maybe he is excited and wants to play. Carry toy or ball outside to offer puppy. I really don’t have enough information about when puppy bites to answer you. Hope some of these ideas help. You can always comment with more information. Thank you Joyce

    This is great - thank you. However, one thing I have never seen addressed is what to do when a puppy is grabbing at legs, uninterested in toys or treats. Our 9-week old Patterdale terrier gets really excited, starts nipping at trousers and feet and it's impossible to exit the room or get up high, without dragging him with us, attached to our legs (painfully) by his teeth and growling. How to get him off when he is locked on? We try to keep a calm house, and initiate play ahead of him doing so whenever possible, but he gets so excited and it results in chasing trousers 75% of the time. Doesn't care about running around in the garden (seems apprehensive about going out in the rain) so burning energy can be challenging. I am starting to think he is going for legs, just to let go, knowing that a treat will come when he 'leaves'. A win win for the puppy.

      Hi ML, in the Puppy Biting Playlist you will see me stand still and reward the puppy and then move one foot and reward the puppy. Keep rewarding your puppy for not moving as you move your feet . Increase your movement until you are moving quickly and your puppy is remaining still because he knows you will reward him for not moving. Stuffed Kong’s help with puppy biting. look for ways to satisfy your puppy’s needs. His natural instincts. What was he bred for.? They were bred to use their mouth to grab onto prey. Every time he looks at a toy praise him. Encourage him to carry toys. Encourage him to play tug with you. Play by rules and always trade for a treat and give it back to play again. He is a baby . Puppies need structure and frequent naps in puppy pen or crate. That will decrease biting . Here is the playlist. I hope this helps . Any questions, just ask.

Today, I was putting the toaster away, and the dog 3.5 months, reached over and bit my arm, and has done this numerous times. It’s almost like he’s getting more aggressive. I’ve worked at a shelter for years, and fostered dogs in my home, and I’ve never seen a puppy act like this. He also chases my smaller dog who was here way before the new one, mercilessly, corners him and my dog is scared of him. This is not what I pictured!

      @DiamondDogTraining  2 роки тому

      10week old Dachshund is really a baby. I would try a couple things. When your daughter is really excited, put your puppy in his puppy pen with a Kong to keep him focused on licking and ignore your daughter playing. You can keep a gate between. Them when you cannot supervise. Help your daughter to sit and play with a favorite game as your puppy lays on a mat licking a filled Kong to show both of them how to be calm together. Also I play a game with young kids . You can call it Red Light , Green Light Mother May I or anything your child knows it as. Feed your puppy treats for not moving as your daughter takes 1 baby step. She must say Mother May I before she moves. Increase her movement to walking, jumping, running as your puppy is rewarded for not chasing her. To keep your daughter calm . Take a break after every few minutes and ask her to come to the puppy and sit beside you and rest . She can have a drink as she sits. This is just 1 game I play to help a child to use energy and teach puppy to ignore the child excitement. Hope this helps. Joyce

    This is one of the best videos I’ve found. Most other videos have one or two solutions that rarely work. One question I still have: our puppy is brand new, maybe 8 weeks, and she is very sweet but her play is very rough and sometimes aggressive. She will snarl and chomp at us randomly, sometimes bite down and begin thrashing tearing skin while making scary gremlin sounds. She’s totally unreasonable in this state, although it usually last a few seconds it’s becoming more frequent and we don’t know how to react or correct it. Any advice would be greatly helpful. We don’t want her to turn into a biter.

      Hi Billy, thank you for your comment. Your puppy is 8 weeks and could be biting for many reasons. Overly tired causes a puppy to bite . All puppies have those crazy times that is normal . Handling exercises with a stuffed kong help a puppy to relax. Your puppy should have nap times in a crate or puppy pen. Try watching the play list Puppy Biting for more ideas. Most puppies at 8 weeks will respond to Ouch if you shout loud and then ignore your puppy. I will post it in a comment . Any questions, just leave a comment

      I agree, these are great tips on this video.
      I’ve also learned with my little guy that if you hold him against your body with one arm and with the opposite hand secure his collar so he can’t reach back and bite, then gently but firmly tell him to settle. When I feel his body relax, I say yes and reward. This has reduced blood shed and frustration.
      I have noticed when my little guy is over tired he goes full-out Cujo!😜 When he gets like that I put him in his crate and he is usually asleep in 1-2 minutes.
      Im also finding that now that my pup is almost 12 weeks, he can follow training exercises better. So don’t get discouraged. 😊

    • @DiamondDogTraining
      @DiamondDogTraining  3 роки тому

      Hi Michelle, do you mean gets excited like when he sees another dog or person? i would suggest a couple things. Before you get close to whatever it is that excites him, Before your dog gets excited, stop and ask your dog to "Sit" and "Look". Get your dog to focus on you, before you take a step closer. If your dog cannot focus on you, then you need to move backward away from what excites him until he can focus. When he will "Look" at you at that distance, then move a step closer and repeat asking hi to "Look." if your dog gets too excited when he is outside, then practice indoors first before you move outside.. Another suggestion, if your dog loves toys, carry a tug toy and play tug to distract him. Teach the Tug game and play it outside before your dog sees a distraction. hope this helps. If your dog gets excited over other specific things, let me know and I can give you more suggestions. Thank you. Joyce

      Hello, thank you for your comment. I like to think of my relationship with my dogs as based on trust and mutual respect. Your deep guttural growl may stop the biting, but we really don’t know what your puppy is thinking. We can’t communicate to our puppy as another dog because we don’t know what the dog is saying. So I respectfully disagree. I believe the best way to help the puppy is to teach them when they bite too hard, we Yelp and if it continues we leave the room. When you watch an adult dog with a puppy, you see them turn away and walk away. I very seldom ever see a dog growl at a puppy unless the dog is very uncomfortable with the puppy and wants the puppy to go away. I have seen a mom growl at a puppy when she is trying to wean the puppy and she no longer wants the puppy to nurse. We don’t want the puppy to stay away from your hands in fear. Only learn to not bite. I will do more research . Thank you. Joyce

    Have had a Bouvier, Shepard, Malamute, Shih Tzu, Retriever, and many others on a farm. Trouble is not on a farm and a big issue with an Australian Shepard including settling him. I've tried all including a lot of exercise as always. Honestly, I'm walking with feet flaring, just like putting knee up if they jump. Perhaps the wrong choice but trying everything to teach boundaries. PS: Shih Tzu was the best cattle dog lol.

      Hello, Australian Shepherd is so smart. So different than all the other breeds. They need to use their mind and physical exercise. Teach your dog touch your hand or down as he approaches or circle you and come through your legs and sit. Keep your puppy thinking try not to just correct. An Aussie will very quickly learn to jump away from your knee as you raise it. Think about teaching your puppy to touch your hand as he approaches. You can see a couple videos I have on teaching “Touch “ and the many ways to use it. Let me know how you are doing and if you have any questions. Thank you . Joyce

      No you do not need any vaccine. The series of vaccines are given to protect your puppy from getting sick from another dog. Take your puppy to a vet and they will set up a schedule for your puppy. 36 days is really too young to leave the mom. Is your puppy still with its mom and littermates . My 4 month old German Shepherd mix is a seriously frightful biter. Saying ouch, makes him bite harder and he gets more aggressive, he punched a hole in my palm about 2 months ago. It's so bad teaching him other commands is a problem. Even on a leash, he's still trying to BITE. Redirecting with a toy or treat hasn't worked. He looks at the treat and ignores it for the flesh he's biting. Walking away abruptly makes it worse when we come back. No, not because he's tired, running to exercise him on a leash, even as he is running, he is still turning towards me and trying to nip and bite. What else can I do?

      Hi Tris, Ouch makes him more excited. I would suggest you stop saying ouch. Running with him also gets him over excited and he bites. We need to keep him calm. is it possible he is too tired. does he get regular naps morning and afternoon. An overly tired puppy will bite more. He is teething right now. Stuffed frozen kongs will help him feel better. Also frozen raw bones. We also need to teach him self control. When you are playing with him, stop playing and stand still before he gets too excited and starts to bite. Play with a toy to keep him focused. If he bites your hand, walk away and stay away for about 1 minute. if when you return, he bites, walk away again. Keep repeating until he stops biting. then praise and pet. Work hard on teaching him "Sit". Each time he starts to bite, ask him to "Sit". also wearing a harness and leash to pick up leash and control him may help calm him. also Teach him "Leave It" Here is The video Teach Dog Leave It To Stop Biting Ankles And Feet . hope these suggestions help. @@DiamondDogTraining I couldn't start training because she goes beserk and biting right away. She wouldn't play with toys as soon as she sees our feet, which happens mostly in the morning or at night even after exercise. She can be calm one second and then bezerk like a crazy rabbit. I just took her out of the crate now (she was calm) and she immediately ran after my feet. I had to return her to her crate.

      Allie, how much exercise is your puppy getting. Either your puppy may be too tired from too much exercise or if your puppy is spending a lot of time in the crate, your puppy may not be getting enough exercise because it is biting you when she is out of the crate. I would puppy a harness and leash on the puppy as it comes out of the crate. The harness and leash may keep puppy calmer and able to focus on you and not try to bite. If your puppy tries to bite your feet, Hold the leash away from you so the puppy cannot bite you. When the puppy stops trying to bite, hold a Filled Kong for the puppy to lick. While puppy is licking Kong , pet your puppy gently. This will help your puppy relax. Then attach a longer leash and throw a toy to get more exercise . Hope this helps. Joyce

Also my videos on treat dispensing toys will give you more ideas. You may say how does this help with biting. Puppies bite when they are not tired and are bored. Your puppy has lots of energy and stamina. We need to tire your puppy out every day. Also puppies bite because they are too tired. I call him Teddy but I’m having a hard to getting him to respond to it but listens when I click my tongue, I’m really trying to catch the biting/chewing while it’s still early, I’ve already purchased a couple of chew nylabones, the rope knot, I’ve feed him few times directly to try avoid biting, so far the pup is very good motivated, he will sit when I reward him.. is there anything you would suggest going further, also I have a 10 year old rott pei who never was raised around other doings so it’s taking awhile for him to come around to the pup, I understand the pup is going to have to learn on his own but I do get just a little nervous about my old dog, he’s right around 100lbs and may sometime show aggression, I want the pup to be able to interact with the old dog without keep trying to bite his tail or jump on his face to avoid anything potentially fatal for the pup

      Hi Jordan, great you are hand feeding your puppy. You can teach your puppy to focus and pay attention to you by holding the piece of dog food to your eyes and calm his name. When he looks at you , give the food. If you does not look at your eyes, make kissy sound to get his attention. Also the click sound to get his attention, could cause a problem if you want to use a clicker or mouth click in your training. The click happens after your puppy does the behavior.
      Your older dog is a concern. You need to protect your puppy from being hurt and help your older dogs to accept your puppy. Keep gates between the 2 dogs. Praise and give treats to your older dog for being calm and looking at your puppy. Here is a link to a video to help you. Let me know how you are doing.

      Hi Kathryn, thank you for your comment. How old is your puppy? It is harder right now because we can’t socialize our puppies as much. It falls to us to give them enough exercise in the apartment to exhaust them. When they are tired, they are less likely to bite. Here are some tips. Stuffed frozen Kong, your husband can hold the Kong and pet the puppy. Hand feed part of each meal . Makes the meal last longer and teaches a soft bite. You don’t give treat when puppy bites down on fingers. Puppy will learn very quickly to take treat gently. Also food dispenser toys to help puppy have mental exercise. Also on the other side, puppies are more likely to bite when they are too tired. Regular crate naps twice a day . Schedule is so important .also be sure no one is playing with puppy and allowing puppy to bite hands. That will teach puppy it is ok to bite hands. Please watch my playlist on Puppy biting for more tips. Hope this helps. Any more questions, just leave a comment. Joyce

    Good day! I loved your video. It really gives many solutions to biting.
    We just got our puppy (8weeks) 4 days ago. Second day while playing and he's really exited, he switches to my socks and starts pulling and growling. When I try to give him his toy again he either continues or starts barking at me. We are trying to do timeout but thats means 2 or 3 timeouts during his 1 hour of being awake which is bad as I've read. I tried to ask him to sit with treats (he stops) but after that he continues barking or biting. Also I'm concerned of giving him too many treats. When I give him a shewy toy filled with soft cheese or wet food, it doesn't interest him for that long of a time and he comes searching for my legs or the couch to chew on. At these times I feel lost. Please advise. Thank you

      @@DiamondDogTraining Thank you for kind response, I will try your videos advice and will write here in a month how it went. She's 4 and half month flat coated retriever, very friendly, super outgoing and smart. She's great at walks and learned way more commands/skills I'd expect for such short time. She's been very mouthy from the get go. I went over the standard advice when licks turn to bites - NO, hand goes limp, stop playing, get out myself or if its continuing put her in a room (for less than a minute) etc. It sorta-works sometimes. But at times she'll just "insist", for example with hunting a sock of my gf's foot or nipping at my heels. She's too big and too energetic to just stonewall, she never broke my skin but I can't pretend it has no effect on me to avoid giving a reaction, even worse for gf her skin is thinner. Yday evening puppy had a very long walk and today in the morning about 40 min. Then she got nosework treats, we took some care not get her overexcited in the house, rewarded when she was nice with maybe 3 small treats and just a pat, yet she went overboard anyway. I don't think its about not meeting her needs, it was plenty of activity. To me it looks that its just so fun for her that she's willing to face our displeasure. Before, from time to time we did play with her tug or fetch in the house, so maybe that is what she tried to force. Or combination of these? We do spot trouble coming most of the time, when she's getting overeager "sit" or "to your place" usually works, we'll try to follow advice from video, so I hope we just keep at it until it always works.

    • @DiamondDogTraining
      @DiamondDogTraining  3 роки тому +1

      One more suggestion. She is a Flat Coated Retriever. As a retriever, She should be very motivated to carry a toy and also use her nose to sniff. Try playing a scavenger hunt game and toss her dry kibble in the grass and let her use her instinct to find the food. You can combine having her stay while you scatter the food and then release her. Also carry a toy and praise her when she is holding the toy. No praise, absolute silence when she drops the toy until she picks up the toy and then more praise. Try the Lickimat and kong for her meals. Make her work for her meals. Omega Paw Tricky Treat Ball would be a great way to give her dinner. Exhaust her with mental and physical exercise and have the Kong ready to give her as soon as you finish playing fetch or come or other games. You are right the biting will stop eventually but ignoring her when she bites by walking behind a gate or door will also help. Let me know how you are doing. Flat coat retrievers need to work. Any way you can keep her working, teach tricks, train her. Any thing she does with her nose will help. Also raw bones frozen are good for teething. Joyce

       @Diamond Dog Training Looks like I don't need to report how it went in a month as in a week its already much better. We do almost all of the tips. Its a long list but we're 2 people without kids on home office and shes napping a lot anyway, so its quite doable to pass her something to do (but not overly excite her at home) when she's getting restless. Last week trying to distract her when she was getting nippy had maybe 20% success, now its like 80%. With getting her to interact more with toys we praise when she carries them as you advised, but also putting used socks on some toys made them way more interesting and our feet safer. Thank you so much, this has been of great help!

      Hi Nikki, great you are getting puppy not to bite you. Keep working on that. Reward with treat for drop it. Your 2 year old and your 11 week old puppy are both babies. Very hard for either of them to sit still. Management is really important. Separate by gates and a puppy pen when you cannot supervise. Also sitting with your 2 year old and playing as puppy is eating a stuffed frozen kong will keep both occupied. A pug puppy may need the medium puppy kong, not the small, as the pug face makes it difficult for your puppy to eat the food. Another idea is to have your puppy occupied with food toys when your daughter is running. Also Sit with your daughter and hold the filled Kong and help your daughter to learn to be gentle petting your puppy. My advice is really gates and puppy pen to prevent rough play. Your puppy will start biting because he is getting over excited. There are more ideas in the playlist . Puppy Biting. Have you had a chance to watch the videos. You must be very busy with 2 toddlers. Hello, where is your dog house. Is it a crate inside the house. If it is , I would use it for good times. Give him treats and let him take naps in the crate. I would not use it for times when he is doing something wrong . I would put him behind a gate for a few minutes . I would attach a long leash to the harness when he is outside.

Will she play tug of war, drag a toy attached to a leash to chase , a flirt pole that you can move and your dog can chase it. also practice basic Sit and Down. Walk a couple steps and turn and face her. Ask her to sit. Keep her energy level down so she does not get too excited and grab at your ankles. Hello . I need some help here . A puppy followed me back few days ago from the roadside during the midnight when im driving my car in the garage and i decide to pet her because she is not leaving me and she quietly rest in the garage i do not know how old is she and i cant tell from the look as this is my first time to pet a dog. The next day i buy her food and feed her but she start to run at me and bite my ankle and jump on me when i walk away. I cannot differentiate is she playing with me or real bite as i definitely feel the pain and she bite more hard everytime . She even make a grrrrr sound when i swing my leg when she is biting me . The next day i buy her toys and i throw the toys to let her fetch and she bite the toys and come back to me but she didnt pass me the toys instead she was biting the toys so hard and never let go she keep swing her head as she bite the toys. So i pull the toys and throw away for her to fetch and this process continue for few minute she suddenly leave the toys and rush at me and start biting my ankle and i pick up the toys and throw away but she never want to play with it anymore and keep biting my ankle . The day when she followed me she never act this way . She never act so active and scary as she bite . She just wander around me the laying down below my car so i just leave her for the night until the next day she start to bite me so i cover the garage with a big paper box temporary but she never sleep that night as she was trying to find a way to pass the garage and i notice she keep biting stuffs in the garage also the paper box blocking her and keep walking around dint even rest or sleep ....
    What should i do and in the video says that i should stop petting if the puppy leave the toys and bite me . Is this the only way ? Very appreciate your response . Thank you .

      Hi Shun, I am glad your vet told you the puppy was healthy. Now we can talk about biting. Yes, when you make loud noises and clapping you are scaring your puppy. We want your puppy to trust you. Do you have a Kong? A puppy Kong Pink or Blue . A medium size. We need to help your puppy to use it’s mouth in a good way. Check out the video on Kong uses and how to fill the kong. Take the filled Kong and sit with your puppy a d hold kong. Let the puppy lick the kong as you pet your puppy. We want puppy to think hands are good and not to be scared of. Also do you have a crate or puppy pen. Puppies need a Place to sleep a d you need a break from the teeth. A routine of crate time and potty and play and naps every day in the crate or puppy pen will help to establish a schedule . Next suggestion, when puppy is not I. The crate or puppy pen, put in harness and leash . When Puppy bites move puppy from you with leash. Put puppy behind gate for 1 minute and then pick up leash . If puppy is not wearing leash , you step behind gate. I gave give. You many ideas. Please watch the playlist Puppy Biting and you will see all these things in the videos. Hi Jennifer, i apologize, I missed your comment. i would have answered
      earlier. Yes, this is a tough time. A husky is very smart and very active. Try using really great treat or food when Teaching her to "Sit". Practice with no distractions. Then When she approaches you, say "Sit" and reward instantly. When she is biting your pants, find a place to get behind a gate or door. Leave her alone for 30 seconds and then return with a toy in your hand. Offer toy. Husky likes to run. Can you put on a harness and a long 20-30 ft. leash. hold the leash, toss toys to fetch. play with her to tire her out. Also puppies that are too tired will bite more. Make sure she has regular naps in a crate or puppy pen morning and afternoon. i hope these suggestions help. Let me know how you are doing. This does get better. Joyce

      @DiamondDogTraining  3 роки тому

      Hi, much of the same information I commented to Jennifer applies to your puppy. But there is a difference. The Bull Terrier needs lots of strong chews. Look for the strongest toys and chews. Raw knuckle bones are soft enough so as not to hurt the puppy's teeth but are great for chewing. Exercise, structured naps, training to satisfy all the puppy's needs. Let me know how you are doing. Try to redirect youtr puppy to the toy if he starts biting you. Get up and turn your back when he bites you. Walk behind a gate to get away. Lots of exercise , but not overly tired. Puppy pen to confine when you cannot supervise. Try saying "Ouch" very loud to see if he stops biting. He is so young, there is a good chance he will stop biting and you can give him a toy. a few weeks from now, Ouch may only get him excited.
