I love that this author believes in rescue dogs. The tips and training has been invaluable and gave me moments of.... "how simple why didn't i think of it" so it's been a great tool. Thank you!
Last night I was so upset with my new 9 week old miniature dachshund because his puppy biting was out of control, he was launching himself at me and I was bitten again and again. I searched UA-cam to see if I could find a solution and wow how fantastic Will’s training advice was, it worked and this morning after two attempts to bite hard my boy is a different puppy. I now have an adorable playful puppy and haven’t received any further bites. Can’t thank Will enough and I will certainly be checking out his other training advice and tips 😊
I'm a professional dog trainer from New Hampshire U.S.A. This is great advice and what I also suggest for my clients. I sometimes either show them a video of a mom dog disciplining her puppies, or ask them to watch a video when they have time to do so. Thank you for your videos, Will. They are great!
@@Joserambo9940 Sometimes that can happen. It could be that you were using the wrong energy, or that a different method was needed. There are several methods to stop puppy biting.
Yesterday my nine week old puppy (2 whole pounds!) was making mincemeat of my fingers as I yelped and made my hand go limp. More and more and more nipping. This morning I looked for this video, now that the reality of new puppy has set in at the one week mark, watched several times, had my husband watch it and we both practiced hissing like a couple of idiots. He coaxed me on improving my hissing, we changed our approach-and I’ve had a total of three isolated nips. THANK YOU!!! You are brilliant.
I have tried this , which did not work, also tried tapping his nose sharply, he interoperates this as a challenge and snaps even more viscously at me very often drawing blood from my fingers, or face. He is a 10 week Border Collie, and apart from the biting, he is a perfect dog, and I am determined to master him, which is what brought me to this video. Thanks for sharing.
Omg!! I’ve just done this with my puppy and it worked! I tried the active method and low and behold she gets it! Took 3 attempts within about a minute and now she’s stopped nipping and biting during playtime. Later in the day we played again and she forgot herself a couple of times but just the noise was enough to remind her not to bite! You absolute legend!!! Thank you for this great tip! ... now on to perfecting the crate training!
I'm so grateful for this video. I've got a 15 week old gsd/lab and she's a phenomenal puppy in all ways except for thinking peoples hands (and noses) are chew toys. There are so many great trainers on the internet but very few will publicly recognize the benefits of being physical (not violent oc) as a means of correction. I've made some progress through redirection and rewarding good behavior, but in less than a day, tagging her when she bites has completely stopped her biting and we've been able to cuddle and play so much more because of it!!
This worked very well after one week of puppy bites from our 8 week old GSD. Now I just make the ‘sound’ of active correction and she instantly stops. I realized that our cats have made a similar sound of warning to the puppy this whole week to train her to stay a few feet back from them. Humans also have a learning curve! 😂
This has been the best and most informative video I've seen to help with puppy biting! I've watched several videos so far and yours has been the best at helping us! We just got a 9 week old golden retriever puppy. Thank you for this video!!!

Just brought home a mini bernedoodle at 8 weeks old. He must have thought i was one of his litter mates😅 as he was continually biting me. Tried all kinds of corrections, but this one did the trick!🎉 I'm not sure about the psychology of this, but it worked within 15 minutes. Thank you and my body parts, thank you😊
This is exactly how I feel and the ways that I have been working with my new puppy . I feel so amazing that Iv been doing the correct actions and not been making the process worse. Thank you for helping so many animals and sharing the video
You are saving my life 😭 my 3 month old has given me decorative teeth marks since I got her despite me trying the “close the mouth” or “press on their tongue” methods. Literally half a second after doing this she stopped biting, which she never does, so thank you!
I was doing the squealing method with my 10 week old aussie and it wasnt working. Now that i know about active correction i can see him really understanding that biting humans is not okay and will go running to his toys. that correct, redirect, reinforce was very helpful thank you Will!
Excellent video! At least I think so. I'm going to try it out. We are taking a puppy training course right now, and so far our puppy is responding very well, but it focuses entirely on "ignore and reward". That seems to work for anything we want to encourage, like retrieval or sitting or even obstacles, but doesn't seem to work great for stopping unwanted behavior. Whereas the older dog is not afraid to use corrections, and so far seems to be doing a better job training the puppy than we are. But he trains the puppy to his own ends, not necessarily ours.
Got our border collie x lab puppy yesterday. She is 10 weeks old and just found these videos! Really hoping we can get a lot out of these! Very excited to train my little lady ❤️
your method works fantastically. have been trying other methodologies and yours is really effective. within 15mins and my pup knows what's ok and what's not, she's so much calmer now. thank you very much, you are God sent
Yeah, tapping my puppy will make her think it’s a game and become more excited. I tried the yelling no with a loud sound that shocks her, and ignore her right after by looking away but staying in her area and it personally worked in terms of her not biting my feet.
I was at my absolute wits end yesterday with my Parson Russell Terrior puppy who was biting, snapping and being generally unruly. I really thought I had made a mistake getting her . After watching your vids about biting, walking on a leash, sit and down, I have a completely different pup today. Thank you so much for making this available in such an easy way to understand.

Your methods for how to stop pulling and walk with a loose lead worked miricales for my 4MO Amstaff! Just purchased your puppy book and we are trying to work on bitting now. We adopted him just 1 week ago and the progress with the advice in your videos is amazing! He does tend to get more riled up with both active and passive correction but I suspect our application of the technique or the redirection timming may be off. Thank you for all the advice and help oyu offer!
OMG! THIS IS AWESOME! That is exactly the way we trained GREAT DANE puppies when I was a kid. My parents owned an AKC registered Kennel. Raising and obedience training them for what used to be legitimate dog shows. In the old days if a dog even looked to the side it was eliminated. They had to focus and respond to its owner's commands and not let the surroundings distract them. It was a mutual respect between pet and owner! We did NOT give them treats as bribes but praise and love for showing the correct behavior. You show that a "reprimand" does not have to be a punishment! Dogs are smart, they will eventually learn that its owner will bribe them to be good and act up to receive the bribe! Much like children will. I was in Church one day as a single parent of 5 children. My children sat and listened to the Preacher as he was speaking. The two parents behind me, were giving their one child candy to get him to stay quiet and sit still. The father said "your children are so well behaved" and asked very quietly what I do as a parent to keep my children from acting up. I said "well, I don't give them candy for acting up as a bribe to get them to be good. I reward them with love and praise and respect them for doing so!" But they, the parents, continued their behavior, and as soon as the piece of candy was gone, their child would act up again to get another piece of candy! Instincts are similar in the teaching process of every "thinking" creature. Well done sir! And you are right, the behavior WILL continue in later life if many of the other teaching methods are followed! GREAT ADVICE!
We use stay, a whistle and no clicker in our trainingn of our 14 month old Border Collie. It works so well. Thank you for this video, it confirms we are doing it right for our boy.
Thank you my daughter and I love playing with our pup but his biting was getting out of control today we had a break through using your method definitely works
We've had our rescue pup for a few weeks & nothing was working - any time I'd try to pet him he'd bite (playfully, but it still hurt!) - i tried this today & he literally hasn't bitten me the rest of the day. I still have marks on my hand from his bites this morning! I'm truly amazed!
Thank you!! So many trainers are using collars to redirect this attention, which is fine for most breeds, but some puppy breeds have delicate tracheas, and a collar pull is dangerous.
The active technique is very effective and has stopped the biting of a 12-week-old labrador almost in its tracks. It is not painful but a correction that the puppy seems to instinctively understand. I have had dogs for many years and only wish I had this information earlier. Will talks through the problem and explains the techniques clearly. A really useful video.
Fantastic! I was honestly moved by this. You love your dogs with grace and truth, and it reminded me of Jesus' love. I always really apreciate seeing your heart for what you do.
Can you do a video about how to go about changing rules if the need arises? Obviously consistency is so important for a dog but sometimes commands need to be changed (in our case we accidentally taught the same command for 2 different actions, so we needed to work to change one of them), or rules need to change (i.e. we moved and no longer have a fenced backyard so we had to change some of the outdoor rules for safety reasons), or other things that require changes to the existing rules. What's the best way to go about changing rules when it's necessary?
My understanding is the reason to do the 'whimper' and/or turn your back approach isn't to stop puppy biting altogether, but to train the puppy to develop a "soft-mouth". If you discourage the mouthing behavior entirely, an adult dog will not have learned to mouth gently when it does instinctively bite in response to some sort of startle, which poses a huge risk. I'd really like to hear people's take on this approach within that context, because although this no doubt looks effective I am confused.
My method taught to me over 60 years ago by an shepherd is that I don't ignore biting, but act like an adult dog, don't react & move out of reach. So rewarding unacceptable behaviour with nothing, if a behaviour is unrewarding it will stop.
You are EXACTLY right. You can see this behavior in well trained dogs they will mouth as gentle as shaking hands. This is also why trainers say puppies should stay with the mom and other puppies because they learn bite control from litter mates and mom. If a human teaches bite control properly then the chance of the dog actually hurting someone is very low but like this “internet famous” trainer is teaching techniques that he claims “work” but in reality leave much to be desired.
No. They will “soft mouth” just fine with disciplined corrections later in life. The “never actually correct” stuff from the pure positive wackos is not beneficial in the long term.
I taught my black lab mix to walk off leash using an Ice cream sandwich. She is a very food driven dog. I walked with the sandwich in my hand on a hot summer day and it caught her full attention. She completely focused on my hand for when a drip would come off. When I stopped, as soon as she sat down she got a couple of full licks. We passed squirrels, other dogs, and a few cats and she never once got a step behind. The second walk was without a sandwich, but praise when she stayed with me and stopped and sat when I stopped. Third walk was the same and then the fourth walk I did another Ice cream sandwich.
@ericandrews1661 she is a sweetheart. A giant chicken, but still a sweetheart. She is terrified of the 1 year old child across the street but will attempt to chase off a pack of coyotes.
Wonderful tutorial, stumbled into it by chance and subscribed immediately. I don't have a dog yet but I will soon be getting a curly coated retriever. I am looking forward to it so much ❤🥰
Hi! I tried it a few times on my puppy, it works great! Except on puppy crazy time. Do you have any advice for that ? I don’t own a crate and also I cannot take her for walks yet, because she’s too young to get her shots
I just got a 3 year old dog 4 days ago that likes to chew on my hands when we play. Im gonna give this a try and hope it works on adult dogs as well. So far i have been doing the correction part so now im gonna implement one of her toys as a redirection. Before this dog i had an American bulldog for 11 years and i have been watching other peoples dogs for a long time. But if there is one thing i have learned when it comes to dogs it is there is always a new challenge around the corner.
When it said instantly .... title , meant , instantly . I'm not only grateful but can't wait to take my pup back to my ma and sisters home now after this help . Man . Can't say thank you enough for this . 🐾
We did the "ow" and pretend to be hurt with our at the time 2 month old dachshund male. Got the message across, he's the sweetest boy and if he thinks you're hurt he'll come running to give you licks. He still likes to mouth during play but he never bites down and he knows gentle as well when giving treats. He'll be 2 next month.
Any advice for when the dog starts ignoring the corrective action? She’s 10 weeks and initially the correction, distraction and praised worked. But after the 3rd or 4th time using it, she started ignoring it. And eventually getting mad and growling at me. I’ve trained all sorts of dogs but all older “problem” dogs that don’t mouth hands. I’m not sure what to do. She’s a black lab
I’m having the same problem with my puppy, I’ve watched all the videos and tried all of the different suggestions, my little monster just gets more excited and starts to bite harder
@@kellycollins3427I know this is hard to hear but you arnt correcting hard enough I’ve had shepherds and Belgian malinois some of the dogs that bite the most and you have to be extremely firm or they will think it is intense playing
@Ecol Cre that’s not necessarily true, their entire puppy stage is a learning experience and a lot of puppies don’t stop teething later on in their puppy years. It takes time
Oml this is such a useful video, i wish i didnt wait until my labradoodle was already in it’s teen phase to watch this. He’s a bit too big for a twelve year old like me to do the active corrections. I’ll try my best, we’re a big household of 8 people, and yet only me and my mum do anything to take care of the big dog that all 6 of the children begged for.
Does this work for feet and clothes like trousers? Sounds silly but hands this seemed to work but since stopping feet is going mad for trousers and feet. Please help. Spaniel 9 weeks old
We have a 9 week old cavapoo. 1st week he was biting every day thinking it's a game. Followed the advice on this video and amazing. He's like a different puppy now. Fantastic video. Subscribed to this channel now 👍
Thank you so much it’s been a long road losing people I care about and I just got myself a nine week mini golden doodle I’m doing the best I can and she is wonderful but I don’t want her to bite people and risk having an incident. Thank you so much for the steps.
Use more force up to the point they get it. The more aggressive the dog the more force you use. a little bite now both improve your life, and his. A socialized dog is a happy dog. Children hate being treated as the bad one.
Greta video again King Will. 👍🏼 Puppies have brand new teeth. People don’t realize that they’re really quite sharp, lol. They actually hurt a grown man’s fingers (believe me 😂). And also people don’t think that one day those teeth will be full sized, and if not controlled now, they’ll really hurt someone one day. Happy subscriber and dog-guy. 🇨🇦

We are going to give your method a shot and see how it goes. Will let you know and thank you for your video. Dave & Natalie.

This man is 100% SPOT ON!
Thanks Will. Day 3 of owning an 8 week old Cavalier King Charles. Your vids are helping us get through and train him.
I've got a 7 week old cavalier king and just started working with her for this behavior
You’re the best mate ever, definitely trying this soon as I get home. Thanks friend
Just tried this on my puppy that was hurting my hand and instantly it worked like magic! Thank you!
Great video Will, and sound advice as usual.
Love the gentle correction technique ... whacks on the snoot or rear are uncalled for and ineffective. Nicely done.
Doesn’t always work, I do that same thing and they don’t let go
Wonderful tutorial, stumbled into it by chance and subscribed immediately.
Omg thank you so much. I’ve been going crazy with my puppies biting
Excellent, it’s working immediately! Thanks a bunch
When it said instantly .... title , meant , instantly . I'm not only grateful but can't wait to take my pup back to my ma and sisters home now after this help . Man . Can't say thank you enough for this . 🐾
Not working for me
I get my puppy tomorrow so I definitely be doing this when needed. Thank you
We did the "ow" and pretend to be hurt with our at the time 2 month old dachshund male.
Exactly what happened with us. This method made her bite even more viciously and even start barking, which she wasn't doing previously.
Same 🥲
I’m having the same problem with my puppy, I’ve watched all the videos and tried all of the different suggestions, my little monster just gets more excited and starts to bite harder
@@kellycollins3427I know this is hard to hear but you arnt correcting hard enough I’ve had shepherds and Belgian malinois some of the dogs that bite the most and you have to be extremely firm or they will think it is intense playing
i love how you make it simple and quick i love this RECOMEND!
Holy s, I’m impressed. Just tried this sound and gesture with my puppy and after many battles seems she gets it
Lead Our Puppies Because Leadership Is Love❤
That sounds great . Thanks for sharing . I hope our 13 weeks old GR thinks the same . Greetings from 🇳🇴
My 5 month old Goldendoodle continues to mouth after correction and redirection in fact gets more excited.
We have the same problem.
@Ecol Cre not easy to do when we both work been training the best we can with the time we have
@Ecol Cre that’s not necessarily true, their entire puppy stage is a learning experience and a lot of puppies don’t stop teething later on in their puppy years. It takes time
What kind of sorcery is this! Love your video! Can’t wait to go through the rest of your content!
OMG I am so thankful for this video it instantly works and it saved my relationship with my pup❤❤❤❤ can give enough love for this one!!!!!!
Love the simple manner in which you explained how to address puppy biting. Thank you.
Will. You are sooo helpfull, please keep this channel going. 🐾👌
Hello Gail how are you doing today
Oml this is such a useful video, i wish i didnt wait until my labradoodle was already in it’s teen phase to watch this. He’s a bit too big for a twelve year old like me to do the active corrections. I’ll try my best, we’re a big household of 8 people, and yet only me and my mum do anything to take care of the big dog that all 6 of the children begged for.
Does this work for feet and clothes like trousers? Sounds silly but hands this seemed to work but since stopping feet is going mad for trousers and feet. Please help. Spaniel 9 weeks old
Worked almost immediately for my puppy! Thank you my friend! 🙏🏻😎👍🏻
Brilliant! Works instantly! Thanks so much!
Great advice - trying this immediately!
Thanks this such a good training video. My puppy has a bite problem
Wow you are amazing. I always say people should doa course before they can have a puppy
Will love the channel! I have a 15 month old German wired hair pointer that has started food aggression any pointers
What happens if the puppy thinks the correction is a game and just keeps biting and playing?
Use more force up to the point they get it. The more aggressive the dog the more force you use. a little bite now both improve your life, and his. A socialized dog is a happy dog. Children hate being treated as the bad one.
Man, I’ve gone through so many videos and cuts, because 99% of the tuts for this say time out and Yelp. I’m gonna try this.
Love your videos clear, quick and concise
We have a 3 month old cockerpoo female called Lola and she has what we call a mad half hour where she bites us and barks and nothing seems to calm or stop her with this behaviour. We are going to give your method a shot and see how it goes. Will let you know and thank you for your video. Dave & Natalie.
Hey, i just wondered if the method worked for u? if you could please write some info with Lola's behaviour right now i would be appreciated? we are having same issue with our Labrador Puppy now ( 40days old only)
Invaluable advice, mate.
Cheers!
Thank you so much for your training ideas. Id really like to talk to you about a serious problem We are having with our older dog and a new puppy we have. Thanks
Tysm for this info because im geting a puppy soon!❤
oh and what breed are those pupies you have?
Just found your videos! We just adopted a 3 month old Berner whose litter was surrendered and I’m checking out all your techniques and videos!
Hello Bronwyn how are you doing today
