I dont understand what it is with these tiny characters in modern beat em ups. Big, chunky characters were always a big part of the genre in the arcades.
I noticed that too. The character models are so small and they kind of have a weird ratio to them where they just kind of look, I don't know, chunky? Back in the day arcade characters were huge and took up a lot of the screen. And home consoles always had to make compromises and have the characters be sized down. On these new beat them ups I love that you can see a lot of the screen and have an idea when enemies are coming at you and where they're coming from, but it just seems like a step backwards to me I guess?
That what I thought the first time I saw the trailer. They just look so off. I do wonder if this was a mobile game originally and they decided to turn it into this.

Totally agree. With that said I really hope the Halloween/Evil Dead turns out good. That’s the one I’m really looking forward to. The Phantom looks interesting too.
A Metal Slug style game would have fit this franchise so much better! Also, why not give us a more cartoon-like style instead of the pixels? I was looking forward to this one and the Karate Kid games, but now I guess I'll wait a little while and get them at a huge discount.
Metal Slug style would work. I also want a GI Joe game in the vein of the og battlefront games. Each Joe would be a different class and you'd have the vehicles

If this was made with the love and care of TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, it would have been awesome. Someone on another video mentioned that it should have been more like Sunset Riders than a traditional beat-em-up, and I think that makes a lot of sense. Or, they could have gone for something like Contra. Making a good G.I. Joe game really shouldn't be that hard, but I'm starting to think I'll never see it happen. All the new S tier brawlers (Fight n Rage, Streets, TMNT etc) have all brought something new to the brawler genre: they've added far more in depth to the fighting systems. The only classic brawler to do that was the vastly underrated Sengoku 3. Combos, juggles, an air game, tactical use of the special meter and the like are what makes those games so fun. It makes them FAR more memorable and replayable than they would have otherwise been. I can't tell you how many times I pop in turtles of fight n rage for just another run through because the moment to moment gameplay is so damned fun. A lot of these pretty knockoffs learned the wrong lesson: they think it's the franchise/theme and the graphics, and they skimp on the fighting system. They've got it backwards. You have to have a great fighting system to tack those graphics on top of. All these recent games like this, Karate Kid etc all look nice but the gameplay is boring. The basic punch/kick/jumpkick just doesn't cut it anymore. Hard to want to grind when the gameplay is just ... alright.
Here’s my gripe about the look of the game. It feels like these things are copy paste now from shredders revenge. G.I. Joe had a more serious art style to it than Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. GI Joe would actually be more kin to the X-Men arcade, or even the run and gun, G.I. Joe arcade game from Konami. Sure it’s great to have these retro cartoons made into current video games, but I feel like the source art needs to be respected.
It's cool how the first part you mostly fight Cobra troops, but later progress to Cobra officers. The look very simular, but troops have red insignias, officers have silver. Most non joe fans might never notice.
in this day and age. GI Joe should of have a robust roster of Joes to choose from , also maybe we should play as Cobra Characters with a different storyline Drive and Pilot plenty of Vehicles Etc
Definitely would have been a better run and gun, plus if your looking for set pieces and destroy-able environments and cars etc. might should just check out some 3d modern games.
The "story mode" had no cutscenes in between levels. Dont you need cutscenes to tell the story ? Whats the point of having a story mode then if there's no story ?
I was never into Power Rangers as a kid, but the new Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind has me really excited for its release!!! It looks so rad!!! I love that these new beat'em ups are coming out now, I just wish they could be more like Turtles, although the newest Double Dragon and Streets of Rage was pretty dope too.
Shredder's Revenge definitely set the bar high for a retro beat em up, I am definitely wanting the Karate Kid one. This one looks ok, but the gameplay looks so much slower than Shredder's Revenge, but since I love the O.G. G.I. Joe cartoon, I MIGHT pick this up.
On the topic of boring themes in recent retro games. I finding a lot of retro FPS games waste too much time with map designs that leave you searching large maps to progress instead. I find my self falling asleep constantly back tracking and searching every corner of large maps I already cleared out dying to find more action. A recent example is Selaco, I really wanted to like that game but it was such a slog of finding where to go next in huge, multi-level maps I gave up. Trying to find muli-colored key cards to unlock doors was meant to expand game play on maps of limited sizes, putting them in maps the size of large airports just makes things boring.
I give you mad props for complimenting the graphics. I almost feel like you did it just because you we re trying to be as nice as possible. To me the graphics look like something on the gba. This is not not pretty to look at. But all a beat em up needs for me is replayability in the form of unlocks. Characters and side levels, or cosmetics. I don't mind "basic" when it comes to this style of gameplay, because it's what I want.
It looks pretty awesome to play. Are you excited to play it too I know you're going to unbox it when you get the game just curious. And are you excited for the Nintendo switch 2?Coming out at all the games
Cobra is and always will be the more interesting. I want to play as Cobra. I'd even accept the game being mid. But to play as an Alley Viper is my dream at 46 😂
Too bad that did not come off with the switch what I did buy this week was the new night slashes and it was on sale for only five bucks and I’ve been having a lot of fun with it. I also bought iron meat and that I did not play yet.
Gi Joe is a cursed franchise that HASBRO just need to let die....but this game REALLY needed to have a ton of vehicles to drive, they were there to look at but gijoe was less about the characters and more about all the crazy ass vehicles, and if they went heavy on vehicles in this game it would have been pretty unique.
That’s a real bummer… there is no reason this game couldn’t have been as good and enjoyable as the new TMNT games. Such an amazing IP and so much content and assets to incorporate. Had high hopes for this, but it looks like the only way I’d be getting this is on some deep discount. I agree, this would have made much better Metal Slug clone.
I played the demo and I’ll likely pick it up because I’ve always wanted a GI-Joe beat em up. This game would’ve been absolutely amazing in the 90’s. In 2024, it is a lot repetitive and doesn’t offer much past the basics.
This is the problem that we started to run into after games like Double Dragon and Final Fight where everybody and their cousin were making cookie cutter or subpar experiences. I didn't know about this game but when I played the Karate Kid recently after about 30 minutes I stopped and haven't played it again since. The artwork is nice but there's no "umph" to the gameplay where it's just boring left to right scrolling with no level variety and when they do something unique like the barricades it was an awful idea. The last thing we need are new beat em ups that fit the ignorant stereotype to a T like this seems to do.
Sorry but IMO this game should have been a shooting game, with guns and laser weapons, a simple brawler just doesnt fit the narrative of Gi JOE. Definitely going back to the Konami Arcade game which is much better !
i dunno why im the only one that sees it, but this is basically the simpsons arcade 2 but they couldnt get the rights so they put in gijoe stuff. Look at the levels. Look at how the enemies move. Search your feelings, luke. You know it to be true.
OMG U R SO RITE!!! If only they could have gotten the rights to the simpsons then we would have had a simpsons gi joe game. If you look in level 4 you can clearly see a krusty character they must have forgotten to change!!! This is crazy!!!
So many new good-looking beat'em ups, yet barely no one puts the same effort, thought and care as the developers of Streets of Rage 4 and TMNT Shredder's Revenge did. It's as if all the effort goes to the graphics/pixel art during gameplay, and that's it. And even then the pixel art is not that beautiful sometimes. This is really frustrating.
If I think about G.I.JOE, an international army of special forces only, using the best tech & weapons, how this could be a videogame... yes, of course it needs to be a ridiculous beat 'em up, what could possibly go wrong!?
I can understand where you're coming from but maybe the average game play isn't for a kinda fan or a normal fan but for a mega fan. You have to really love the franchise to get the most out of it. With all the TMNT "clones" coming out and with similar game play, it's more or less what kind of ice cream you want. In the end, it's still ice cream but what is your favorite flavor.
MLP, I'm sorry but as some of your other subscribers have said before me - the G.I.Joe franchise is the absolute last IP I'd link with a beat 'em up. The IP was about weapons, explosions and large set pieces involving vehicles. I saw an early build of this game with the player using their fists to 'fight' a HISS tank and I knew this would be garbage. Thanks for confirming that this is just a nostalgia bait, cash grab!
So beat 'em Ups have basically become "popular in the moment" tie in breakfast cereals. Just change the shape or pixel, it's all wet soggy corn you've eaten athousand bowls of before.
Shredder Revenge has set the standard too high for these devs to keep up. No complaint though. Just a good way to sort out the lazy ones. Hope Rita Rewind would meet or exceed the expectations.
I would like that Konami port, remaster or even complete remake in Unity or Unreal 5 the G.I.O Game and, by the way, Alien Game (how I like call real contra 3)
I feeling this would case. Shredder Revenge was great game due to it gameplay being. Every Character felt different to play, also Enemies and Bosses felt different to fight. GI Joe and karate Kid were basic beat ups that try to copy Shredder Revenge and fail.
Power Rangers and GI Joe are similar in that Power Rangers has the Zord Fighting and GI has vehicle driving. The difference is they are putting the Megazord stuff into the game and the GI Joe game has no vehicle stages. Not even as bonus stages. Very lazy and cheap to not include it. Id love to have maybe 2 bonus stages with a jeep or tank or plane shooting enemies to earn extra lives if you dont wanna use them for actual levels. Better than nothing.

There is fan made GI JOE beat em up game made around 10 years ago
MLP, I'm sorry but as some of your other subscribers have said before me - the G.I.Joe franchise is the absolute last IP I'd link with a beat 'em up. The IP was about weapons, explosions and large set pieces involving vehicles. I saw an early build of this game with the player using their fists to 'fight' a HISS tank and I knew this would be garbage. Thanks for confirming that this is just a nostalgia bait, cash grab!
Gi Joe Wrath of Cobra & Kong Survivor Instinct
i thought it was alright
it has way more levels that the average beat-em-up
and unlocks are good as well
So beat 'em Ups have basically become "popular in the moment" tie in breakfast cereals. Just change the shape or pixel, it's all wet soggy corn you've eaten athousand bowls of before.
Ron I think we need to stick to Dotemu beat em ups
Shredder Revenge has set the standard too high for these devs to keep up. No complaint though. Just a good way to sort out the lazy ones.
Hope Rita Rewind would meet or exceed the expectations.
I would like that Konami port, remaster or even complete remake in Unity or Unreal 5 the G.I.O Game and, by the way, Alien Game (how I like call real contra 3)
They should have had G1 episodes as an unlockable.
I just would like a proper stealth game with Snake Eyes 😁😁😁
The demo was like folding laundry
I feeling this would case. Shredder Revenge was great game due to it gameplay being. Every Character felt different to play, also Enemies and Bosses felt different to fight. GI Joe and karate Kid were basic beat ups that try to copy Shredder Revenge and fail.
Hey!!! I'm just reminding you that played & made a video about G.I Joe Wrath of Cobra! So You DON'T need to play it again =D
What’s the release date for Ps5?
Only on steam?
As long as it’s better than the last GI JOE game, I’ll be happy lol
Waiting for Ash vs Evil Dad and Halloween
Should've been like the original nes contra game
Nice review yeah it looks kind of meh. Will you check out the Night Slashers remake? It came out a few days ago. 😃
I have a 4p arcade with a pc built into it. I think this game would be okay for this one, but I get your thoughts on this.
I'm still buying it for the Switch
Where can I grab This physical anybody know?
Ha... they drop save icons!
So in the intro FMV Cobra is housed in the G.I. Joe base. what?!
Should have been weapons and vehicles based. Punching a hiss tank to death is dumb.
I wish the ppl at Hasbro knew we wanted the arcade game and not this beat-em-up
Is this coming to the Switch
What platform?
You know this is more like retro beatem ups than streets of rage4 and tmnt. Those games have spoiled people too much, this game is solid!
Why do they all drop wrenches and screwdrivers?
I hope Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind is much better than this.
I mean what do you expect with Retroware leading the charge
