The thing I love about tekken 2 is it seems like the only time outside of tekken 4 where they really took the story seriously. Most of the fighters had serious reasons to participate in the tournament, and the intro really sets the tone for how serious its getting. Kings scene in the alley with armor king still hits hard. We also can't forget purple tux kazuya
That intro is legendary and let's not forget Michelle punching the picture to run off a second time to get revenge on the Mishima's two tournaments in a row, The army of Jacks with those rail guns and not to mention Jack was solely created to stop and kill Kazuya in the first place so imagine if they were hunting him down in the large number 😅, Also I always thought Jun was looking up at Purple Tux Kazuya in his tower as if sensing devil's presence.
Still one of the most unforgettable games and my favorite Tekken. Started playing it when I was pretty much a Baby and my older Brother had it. I remember being scared as heck of Kazuya and Devil back then and now he's my favorite character of all time 😂
"Jacky is one wavy ass white boy, but _that's_ a fucking bear" is probably the best encapsulation of VF vs Tekken character design I've ever heard lmao Great video, glad to see you back man
Tekken 2 has some amazing story in concept. The idea of Devil being less a genetic curse and moreso a physical manifestation of evil was very interesting to me, alongside how characters like Lee were working from the inside to try and defeat Kazuya as well.
Devil being his own entity that got Kazuya to willingly corrupt himself to stave off death and get revenge is WAY better than it just being an inherited thing (with exception)
@@NYG5I miss that plot point, Same way Jin's devil is actually Devil Kazuya's other half but they barely acknowledge that anymore. It being inherited just makes it weird because Kazumi's Devil is her own.
Tekken 2 is underrated man. I grew up on this one. The opening movie, the gameplay, the aesthetic, the music, the announcer (FINAAAAAL ROUND) the characters (shoutout to Baek, Bruce and Kunimitsu) were awesome. The final boss with the OP music when you fight Devil, the endings. Top notch. Tekken 2 felt mature and grown up and elegant. There was a reason for each person's decision to be in the tournament. I spent countless hours playing this game. Tekken 3 took the blueprint of T2's gameplay and presentation and upped it to the late 90s big beat aesthetic like you mentioned. I remember the Lee ending use to scare the shit out of me.

As a birthday gift when I was 13 my mother imported Tekken 2 for me from Japan so I had it almost a year before it came out in america and socially it basically skyrocketed the friendships around me and made me feel like the arcade was finally in my living room as there was a cabinet at our local arcade day 1. It maked me tear up when I think of her figuring out and navigating those import catalogs in the back of gaming magazines.
I will always say tekken 4 is when this franchise peaked in terms of aesthetic. Nothing that came after was any where near that level. I think I also lean towards agreeing with you that this comes 2nd. edit: actually I might say TTT1 for 2nd place, the music and stages in that are really memorable too, the higher res models of these OG character designs was sooo sick to see as well.
I love Tekken 2 soo much! Even into the life of Tekken 3 (which overshadowed it for many). Tekken Tag was such a love note to the fans for having juiced up assets from both 2 and 3. Thank you for showing 2 the love it deserves! It still rocks to this day!
Awesome review!! My friends and i were teenagers when this game first premiered, and i can tell you that intro was like nothing we'd seen before and the gameplay/movesets were groundbreaking, it was the talk of the town, Good times.

In the 90s CGI was so new that people actually was impressed with CGI art, that being just still images of CGI made art, or better yet CGI video, it could really be super low ress but the art was so impressive it still hit you, for example just the CGI art was the selling point of Rise of The Robots and Flashback back in the Sega Genesis, and also in PC CD-Rom games, that is why is not rare to find in japan more "merchandise" around games, like SEGA released for example CDs that only has CGI art of some games or individual Virtua Fighter characters; also was very common for PC magazines of the 90s to be sold with "free Demo CDs" with lots of CGI pictures and art, was a selling point back then, i think CGI exploded with the Matrix movie and after that nobody cared about CGI that much and in videogames people wanted more in-game cutscenes. I personally LOVE CGI, and current videogames should still be using it taking it to the extreme of visual presentation, i was glad tha Square-Enix used it in FF 7 Remake and should have used more in FF XV would have helped in the presentation of that game a lot

Those are all great. But a good and beautiful looking stage? It just itches a scratch in my brain. It’s one of my favorite things about tekken and kof.
I’ve genuinely had a fixation on this game since I was a kid because of its presentation, music and aesthetic. I’ve always wanted to put into words why it appealed so much to me and has ended up being responsible for my music taste and love for Japan. But your video so perfectly summed up everything I’d ever want to say about it better than I could. Thanks!
Great video. I remember this time like the best days of my life. It was heaven looking back. My friends and i playing Tekken 1, 2 and 3 at the arcade then at home on the PS1. It was heaven. Copping out of school to learn more combos and still talking about it as we had lunch at the mall. This was something that will be with me on my last days... The original 3 Tekken games were just awesome. Thank you for the video. Im going to go home and boot up the PSX and enjoy a few rounds...

You get it! Tekken 2 will always be my favorite because of the ambience it created. The music, the character design, the plot and story along with the gameplay mechanics. This game was chef's kiss 🤌💋. This was before sweaty online ranked battles that make Tekken hard to stomach these days. The story and ambience is a non-factor now. It's alll about online.
Dang man that's crazy, literally was thinking about this channel the other day and was like "dang hope he's okay." Here you are and my prayers have been answered. God bless you bro
Tekken 2 is my all time favourite PlayStation game. Probably because it was my first PlayStation game. Used to play the heck out of it. Still fire it up now and then and just soak in the 90's nostalgia. And much appreciate all the love for Jun, Juns stage and music. She was my favourite character from the game. Even named my daughter Jun after her (My wife is Japanese, so I have a good excuse) 😅

I still think this is my favorite Tekken game in the franchise still. It just played fun for me as a casual gamer. Love the characters, the soundtrack and just the roster overall. The intro opening theme and scene is just retro cool! I agree, that Juns theme is my favorite. The Playstation post OST was better than its arcade original soundtrack. Jun, Nina and Michelle's themes were my top three favorite. Honorable mention to King, Paul and Roger's Tahiti stage track.
Overall...Tekken 2 is the BEST Tekken game in entire series. It's definitely Number 1. Because each character had their own story fleshed out, stage, music, boss, sub-boss, etc. After Tekken 2, it went downhill from there. Until I would say about Tekken 6. Tekken 4 was just terrible! But this one will always be Number 1 in my opinion.
Really enjoyed your musical expressions of the song, especially the main character select screen :D You may not know the names of the sounds but you have very good imagination for explaining why they sound that way ;]
Excellent watch. Though I eventually put many more hours into Tekken 3, 2 was the first one I owned, and elements like the music and atmosphere are stuck in my mind much more vividly than later releases. Looking back, I like the way it isn't afraid -- like the first Virtua Fighter -- to show off its polygons. Of course Tekken 3 looked amazing, but Tekken 2 looks like it was going for a style and nailed it. The atmosphere stuck with me too -- ethereal almost, strange to say for a fighting game. Like the stages -- Heihachi's stage, an interior space that vanishes into darkness just outside of reach, and you can walk endlessly and never find a wall, it feels dreamlike, a kind of liminal sensation. There's nothing crazy like Star Gladiator's space battles in the background, it's just unreal enough to set the tone, like Devil's stage and the infinite reflections being unlike any real space. That and the music -- the way it starts up on Devil's stage as he rises to his feet make me feel like I'm about to fight David Bowie in Labyrinth rather than a purple demon man.
Tekken 2 is the only one of the series I ever played, but after that I've played other fighting games (mostly air dashers). Even though I love all of them, none ever got me to feel stuff T2 did. Everything felt dark, mysterious. I was a child back then so just imagine unlocking Devil then realizing his alter is Angel and that SHE FREAKING SHOOTS BEAMS FROM HER EYES. That was pretty creepy back then haha. One of the things I really miss, is knowing nothing about the game so when you tried to clear an arcade mode you eventually fight a character you have never seen in the roster before, in a new stage, in a really hard battle and if you beat it, you unlocked them as playable characters. That feeling was amazing. Nowadays I know exactly which characters I'm getting before even buying a game and if we get more, they will be DLC, not unlockables
Definitely thought this was based on some 80s stuff but overall it was the music. But if anything Tekken 2 had the most gorgeous and sophisticated music , super , super nostalgic and makes me feel like I’m in Blood Sport or Miami Vice mixes with Enter The Dragon . But just beautiful game and memories with me and my cousins and sister .❤❤❤
Tekken 2 (Despite only really playing 3 onwards) is like a blessing; everything you said I could agree with and honestly I think there is something about having an OST like Tekken 2 or a kinda jazzy/ageless music is rare. But the best part is how much Tekken's music for a while was them taking a genre and just cooking a new kinda of feeling. If there is any character select theme that I think might be on par with this is in Burst Limit; which says a lot in my opinion. But divine video!
Hahahahahahaah I made that McDonald's Reina pic. I'm happy I randomly clicked on this video.

Because each character had their own story fleshed out, stage, music, boss, sub-boss, etc. After Tekken 2, it went downhill from there. Until I would say about Tekken 6. Tekken 4 was just terrible! But this one will always be Number 1 in my opinion.
Really enjoyed your musical expressions of the song, especially the main character select screen :D You may not know the names of the sounds but you have very good imagination for explaining why they sound that way ;]
Glad to hear that 🙏🏼
This was the game that made me fall in love with fighting games.
Loved the video! I hope you'll make a Tekken 4 video in the future.
I lost it at "but that's a fuckin bear" lol
Man I love tekken lore and people who understand it. Like how lars isn't the only anime even if his' fighting style is the first anime esque one.
Well put. Also I looked that up and I love the piano in it! Thanks for putting me on.
Man, this was my childhood.
Wasn’t expecting a video like this to be so funny 😂
The purple suit… tekken 2 you understand! We can be friends
