Matt, if you are doing a series of cliff fishing, I would invest on a safety harness. The roofers use it and most likely will prevent any mishaps when fishing alone. You got a family to come home to now.
💯
where does he tie it off too? the rebar or something else?
@@cs512tr Tied the rope to the ground anchor rod.
@@cs512tr i mean in that situation yeah that rebar. At least he will have a chance to climb back up.

Here in Australia we use a device called a ‘cliff gaff’. It slides down the main line and gabs onto the fish like one of those claw machines from the arcade. Once it’s latched onto the fish you simply just pull the fish up using the rope that’s attached to the cliff gaff. Hope to see you use one, Matt! It’s definitely way safer than climbing down there to land the fish!
Yup, Gido’s Fishing channel here on UA-cam, he uses that cliff gaff to pull up monsters.
⚔️🧂🇺🇸🗽🇺🇸🧂⚔️
Doy ou make them yourself or do people sell them? coudlnt find where to buy them online
Just about to mention this lol we do the same in hawai’i
@@cowmancheese You can buy them from Australian fishing tackle stores. They’re about $110 AUD, so not that expensive for such a useful cliff fishing too. The rope you tie to the Cliff Gaff is purchased separately though, but means you can choose the best rope strength for the fish size you intend to target
@@flyneagle8873 Yeah love his channel, Gido’s got some crazy adventures, love how he combines his rock climbing skills with fishing!
Ive used a hoop net several times when fishing on different cliffs. It worked really well.
fishing of dock in the pnw of bc canada we use crab hoops to pull halibut up all the time
In Florida here we use, what is called a pier/bridge gaff. It snaps over the main line and slides down the main line to the fish 🐟 and you can snatch the fish with gaff hooks attached to a length of clothesline and raise the fish up to the pier.
I've actually seen it work and sold in well stocked tackle shops in South Florida.
That's a great idea if gaffing is legal in your area! It probably is, for salt water, I guess.
I saw in a channel Gido's Fishing Adventure.. He used that kinda thing.. It works really well.. He doesn't even have to use a gaff..
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 usually you don't need one, unless the fish is 5lb. plus.
Really nice to see you are still making the rock fishing videos. I mean, fishing from your boat is cool, but I don't own a boat, and probably most viewers don't. I can go to a rocky beach and fish though. So your rock fishing videos are way more relatable, for me, and I can often learn fishing techniques from them.
In Hawaii we use what’s called a Slide Gaff while trying to retrieve a fish from cliff sides. It’s super useful. Can be tricky to get the hang of, but once you do, it can mean be a life saver for sure. It’s got two loops that hook to your main line and you can drop it down to your fish, then pull it up using the rope attached to your slide gaff! Give it a try!
I’ve also seen them called a cliff gaff
I've also seen people use crab hoops to bring up fish.
A buddy of mine made this gaff you are speaking of, he called it a “Hawaiian” gaff. He used a small piece of PVC pipe, cut horizontally along the pipe to slide over your mainline. I have to say, I was impressed of how well it works! Good stuff… very niiiiice, brudda!! ✊😎🤙🎣
Ok ok ok
Would it make it past his float?
I've seen bridge fishermen hauling their catch up using a light crab ring. They toss the ring down, then maneuver it under the fish and lift.
I know the feeling so well matt. That's a fisherman's life, hope the best for you.

This actually made me laugh😭😭

Bro, I lost a 36"+ ling from shore last weekend in Monterey. I know exactly the feels. They're coming in closer to shore now though and we should get more chances at them!
HA! I knew it! I was watching you since I fish So Cal and I've been bobber fishing for about a year now.. Rock on brother!!
Look for the “Hook M Up Bridge Gaff”. It’s a Cliff gaff you can hook up to your main line that slides down to the fish and opens up when it hits the water. Once you pull on it, it closes up on the fish and then you can pull up the cliff. I’ve seen inventory on EBay! Good luck!
Me and my brother fish a local spillway here in central Kentucky and we made our own basket out of wire and connected string to it. You can lower the basket down to the water and retrieve your fish by maneuvering it into the basket.
Hey Matt love your video, I don't get to fish often although I love it, I just don't have the time, I watched the show and if you use a thin rope with a treble hook at the end and put a key ring about foot or two from the hook you should be able to pull the rope and snare your fish don't forget to put some weight on the rope, let NiteNite knowhow you like it
When we fish off bridges, we use a collapsible crab ring to bring fish up. Throw it down, bring the fish over the ring, and haul it up.
Love the channel!
I've used hoop crab pots to bring fish up a cliff. You can release them usually too by lowering it back down.
Thanks for the weekend adventures Matts! Finally ordered some kelp chili crisp after your review. You’re truly a master and joy to watch and learn from.
Perfect timing! Ready for some Fisherman’s Life!
Me and my three kids always watch your adventures..it's like bring right there with you whether on the beach, rocks, boat or camping in the national parks..my special park is the catch and cook,it's just something about catch and cooking your catch right there..our number one companion on the boat is June, he's full of positive energy and a great smile, most of your guest are mostly quiet but not june,so let's have more of the gentleman..thank you for the adventures..oh by the way I use to live in Pacifica for years..later
I was in Crete and watched a couple of fishermen row their boat up to the dock. They had a huge pile of sea urchin between them in the boat. One of them got out, walked to the cafe, got a loaf of fresh bread, walked back to the boat and then commenced to use pruning shears and cut them open and scooped out the uni with the bread. 😳😜
Used to cliff fish long long time ago. I made up a 200lb line with a snap swivel with about 4 treble hooks and a weight tied to it. Just snap the guide to the rod line, it will follow it down straight to the fish. Pull on that line until you have securely penetrated the fish with one or more the treble hooks and you can haul the fish up using this secondary line. Use solid wire for the trebles, make an array. This way they don't get entangled with each other. I know that you're a thinker and could easily come up with a prototype.
Matt, you are one badd dude! I've been watching your vids for a few years and I must say you got me into fishing! Mostly freshwater stuff around local lakes and secret honey holes ;) It's been a great experience so far and I hope to do my own catch and cook soon with extra butter 🧈 much love from socal

😂 can’t wait to see your next invention, a small cliff gaff! Great way to build up the unveil
That after image on the cliff was epic!
Nothing better than a calm fishing video to start they day, when you have home work to do😢
Aye that's those trips where the fire gets re lit and your passion for fishing level up brother. Good shit
I think Gido has some sort of device for picking up fish off of big cliffs. It’s almost like a claw like in those arcade claw machines I think…
I absolutely love the sounds of a long cast
We have all lost big fish. It stings, and I feel for ya brother. You need to team fish on those cliffs in case you get into trouble.
I agree! Matt is a Savage
always love watching rock fishing vids! california style 🔥
Try a bridge net! They are not very expensive, but at that height, the net plus rope may get rather heavy. I use them quite frequently fishing from bridges about 10 to 25 ft above the water, but I don't see why they wouldn't work from greater heights if you have the strength!
Exactly what I was thinking also if he uses a weighted treble I think it would be considered snagging and that’s illegal so hopefully he doesn’t try that and get a ticket lol
@@johnnyhuffman1797 The game warden would have a hell of a time explaining how the fish was 'snagged' when there's clearly a hook through it's mouth, as well. More likely they'd try to get you for using two rods at the same time, LOL!
Instead of the weight right on the bait, try using a torpedo or mooching sinker about 3 ft above the bait. Tie your main to one end and leader to the other. That is how we bobber fish bait for salmon and rockfish along the jetties. It allows the bait a bit more natural movement.
Thanks for posting, your always welcome.
Awwww I’m sorry it’s always good to see you on cam
A large metal ring with a opening for your line, large hooks turned inward. This has a three way yoke tied to a rope. Slide it down line and over nose of fish, jerk to snag fish and pull it up. May have to add weight to metal ring. Love your channel. Keep up the great work.
Really cool editing on this vid -- keep up the great work, man. Love that it's always getting better.
A flying gaff. You need to watch Gido cliff fishing where he using a flying gaff that slides down the line and grabs the fish. Love your show.. Love to show you the south jetty!
Bro your the best california fisherman ever! Love the channel huge fan
Thanks for the interesting and exciting content. Losing those big ones always hurts! Maybe try a hoop net to bring fish up the cliffs.
Maybe bring a crab net to bring up the fish like they do at Pacifica pier.
Thanks for the inspiration and videos.
You can get the Hawaiian slide gaff at S. Tokunaga store here on the Big Island. The rings fit easily over the bobber. They ship. Tight lines
I've seen people in Florida catching some big grouper. They would lower a circle net ( with no handle ) into the water on a separate line, get it under the fish inside the net, and raise the net to bring their fish up !
Ice vid love the channel and have been watching for like 6 years I have always wanted to try that! I love rock fishing from shore, from boat and me and my dad even went from a jet ski and got by limits love the vid and keep it up!
We use a slide gaff for bigger fish in hawaii. And we fish some 70ft cliffs. It's basically a gaff with 2 rings at each end and u slide the line inside the rings and slide um down ur line.. Aloha
In Hawaii we add some split shot weights in between da hook and da bobber. You could try dat and see if it helps da bait glide down more naturally and sway around wit da current more since it's less weight holding da herring down.👍🏽 I thought slide gaffs is illegal there but maybe bring one hoop net like da piers or check out barrel gaffs. It usually grabs da swivel or leader so it doesn't harm da fish, but maybe if you attach something to da top of your bobber, it can grab dat. I still gotta make it out to da cliffs and try some stuff🤙🏽
Cliff gaf here in Hawaii gotta use to get the big ones up the cliffs slide it down you're main line.🤙🏼
Ey Matt is it possible for you to do a Live Stream Catch and Cook?
That'll be a good experience if you ever happen to do that
The fish was small, but the editing was Big ! Nice work on that Matts, tuned in for the next one. 😍🙏👍
In Texas we call that rig a slip cork. And you might try a pier gaff for pulling fish up those cliffs.
We have this thing called a slide gaff in Hawaiʻi. Maybe you can find one out there. Or a barrel Gaff. Where it latches onto the swivel I believe
You could start using pier gaffs on the cliffs. They also make ones that are like the claw in claw machine that you can slide down your line and grabs onto the fish. Pier gaff would be harder to use, but they work well. Get like a 14/0, something small.
IDM man I might try using one of those big collapseabe net crab traps as a net to land the fish.. All I can really think of..
I like your catch but I LOVE your cook! Please do both next time.
When we sturgeon fished off of a steep wall or cliff, we would take a long thin rope, make a slip knot loop on one end the size of a volly ball and slide it around ur line, we would put the butt end of the rod thru the loop and slide the loop down the line. Once it got down to the fish, work it over the head and pectoral fins, since down and pull up
Hey Matt. I love it!! Good day or bad you are on it!!! Thanks for all the work you do to bring us these youtubes.
You win some you lose some. I lost a nice Coho twitching jigs this morning because I went to turn on my second camera. Should have just fought the fish. I look forward to watching your videos.
Feel ya Matt… Xcellent vid. Your the fisherman’s version of Clint Eastwood in “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly!!!
Maybe it was already said, but I would bring a fishing pier net (Promar Bridge) and a surf rod holder to mount your rod while you hoist your catch. I hope you go on tour next year and hit the east side.
Get a cliff gaff. They are awsome they use them 8n Australia alot. Look em up.
You could use a Drop Net but that would be tough for such a cliff
You should get one of those nets they use in Florida for getting fish they catch off of Piers and bridges in the Keys. It's a net like a hoop with long lines tied to it.
Always look forward to your videos, they are so relaxing and enjoying
Dude I'm kinda glad it came off .That cliff looks frightening.
I think I saw you at Ortega park a while ago but I didn’t think it was you love your videos
We use crab nets to land big fish off piers. I can see it being a bit harder at cliff heights but im sure itll work
cool video we have no cliffs here but lots of bridges get that florida keys cuban style trap basket
I've seen a youtuber use a cliff gaff. I googled them and I found this hook'em cliff gaff that looks exactly like the ones he uses and let me tell you that he raises huge fish from ridicilous cliffs.
Here in Puget Sound we used a crab ring on 50-75 ft. of line , put ring in the water just deep enough to guide yor fish into and pull it up !!!👍👍
You know where it lives now matt.. always a next time... broken hearted but won't stop you from getting even :)
I saw in a channel Gido's Fishing Adventure.. He loves fishing from crazy high cliffs.. He used some kind of a triple grapple tied to the line somehow, to grab the fish from up on top the cliff..
Heading to San Fransico with the wife for our anniversary never been there so kinda excited
Yup. Check out this mate from Australia, Gido’s Fishing Adventures. He specializes in cliff fishing. He always clips in and uses cliff gaffs that others mentioned. Worth checking out. Time to hit the climbing gym!
Love his channel, been watching for years. But him and cliffs just sketches me out. Get a slide gaff from Hawaii.
Matt if I were you I would invest in a safety harness because your around cliffs and I could suggest that you use one of those nets they use to bring fish up onto a bridge
Strsp ip like Gido, just in case man!
Also, he has a grappling hook thing for retrieving off a cliff, 3 prongs with a center hub the rope goes through.
Hey Matt, as far as a way to land fish off cliffs I would go with a pier/bridge gaff. I lived in Okinawa, Japan almost 4 years and when the mahi come to the capes there that is what the locals used and it was very effective albeit, theirs were a lot smaller and kind of slender almost like a bunch of thick steel needles. if you can find anything like that online it might be worth a try!
Matts, for the cliff retrieval device, get a net with a deep pouch, take the handle off, and tie it like you would a ring crab trap! You could lower it to the surface of the water, and try and guide the fish into it. Not sure how it would actually work in practice, but it's an idea!
Was going to mention this exact same thing. Use this technique here in FL from some of the higher piers and whatnot. Just literally use a ring crab net and you can tie a rope to the top hook and drop it down and lift fish right into it and pull it up. Might be tougher from a cliff then a pier but it's worth trying.
Love the videos, hate that safety goes out the window when a big fish is on the line! Maybe having a second person with you when doing this type of edge fishing 🤷🏽♂️
Try the weighted treble like you see in Swamp People. We used those off the pier in So Cal to haul in big fish. It's not as clumsy as a dip net
Just a thought, why don’t you add a shrimp fly onto your leader above the weight on your bobber rig. Double your chances of hooking up and it will give the smaller rockfish something to pick at. No leader on the fly, just push a bend in your leader through the eye of the fly then push the loop around the hook. I caught an 14 pound halibut that way on a red shrimp fly a couple months ago. You can do it with a jig as well as long as you only have 2 hooks.
They have Treble Hook throw hooks and back in the day my uncle uses to use Crab hoop net.
I have a "instant crab pot" that I use to drop over the cliffs to haul in fish it is made of kevlar so the rocks dont cause any damage to it hope this helps tight lines!!!
I've seen them use one of thos big spring hooks on those cliffs. It slides down your line and hooks under the gills, then they bring it up on another small rope.
Gidos fishing adventures uses a cliff gaff that he uses with a rope attached to it that he clips on his line and it slides down to the fish. Not sure if it would work with the bobber set up though.
Hi !!! You can buy a tool called a cliff gaff to retrieve your fish from hard to land places. Hookem (great company) in Australia make one. I'm sure someone in the US would make one also...
What a lucky got a big red sea urchin 😂
I'm a simple man. I see big BOBBERS, I click.
Slide gaff? Not sure if that would help. In Hawaii that's used on big fish off the cliffs.
Thanks for the vid. Better luck next time!
Makin my palms sweaty dude
Hey Matts try hand lining the line up the cliff when the fish is tired and near the bank. I hand line 25+ lb fish over the pier hand rail all the time. Try it bro it really $
Great channel! Keep up the hard work
In Norway where i fish i always use a big bobber like that but i rig it inline so the fish gets no resistance when it bites the bait and swims away, ive caught loads of fish on this and i always use it, but if there is alot of waves inline might not be that good because then the bait gets floated away from the bottom
Lasso with wiegted rope over the fishing line run it down work it over the head and bring it up by the tail always worked for sturgeon
I think you could pull it up by handlining it. I switched to 40 pound mono now when I fish off the cliffs. You can pull a good size fish.
I would suggest using a crab net to net the fish
Longer videos please 🙂!!
What about a hand made heavy duty net on the rope? Make sure it's made from heavy duty twine or paracord and has a sturdy wire ring for the opening? Not gonna be easy either way but at least you can put the rod down once it's netted? And you can make it a custom length/depth
Broooo that was anxiety watching you on that cliff haha
Best way to get that fish up is to take me along so I can maneuver a crab net underneath it for you. I am off work Sundays thru tuesdays if you want me to tag along. 😂
I was just there today ! Got a vermillion as well...video coming soon!
