Great video Matt, I don’t think people really understand what goes on behind the scenes as a videographer. The angles, different shots, continuity, etc…Just know it’s always appreciated when I watch your videos 🙌🏾
I was going to text him the same technique. Walking thru some of those mountain meadows when they are active and swishing the net back and forth and having enough bait for a week. Good times. That was a long sentence. I'm sure the wifey is going to bonk me on the head.😂😂😂❤
I have a pile of dishes in the sink 3 ft tall. I keep walking past it. I just finished the video. I'm going to go work on my dishes now because of your comment.
I love river fishing, it’s FAR better than lake fishing in my opinion unless you’ve got a boat and LOTS of time. The thrill of casting into the tail of a waterfall and feeling that rod shake, or the even better SLAM! of he rod pulling down is just AWESOME!! And with the river you really don’t know what’s going to be on the end of your hook. Might be a rainbow, a brook trout, or a brown, but it’s gonna be good lol.
I used to hike out to these alpine lakes in the sierras for years! love going off the trails and going to these little lakes. and yes crickets/grasshoppers are ALWAYS the best bait
River fishing is the way to go if you dont have a boat. I can walk 20ft and theres a different hole i can fish. High elevation rivers are even better since they take a good hike to get to most of them. Been a long time lurker of this channel but hearing you like and have more knowledge on river fishing got me to subsribe finally. Keep up the awesome content my friend 🤙
Hi Matt Very informative videos & you are living the LIFE with your great videos. My “only recommendation”is rather than reaching into the rock caverns & crevices that you might have a bad rattlesnake without any issues to the snake’s actual length but have you in a safe spot rather than SOL!!!
LMAO. Tells the fish “calm down” .. I just want to eat you. 🤣🤣. Another great video and thank you for what you do and sharing. Really made my day with a few chuckles a long the way.
Watching this video Matts brought back so much memories of when I was stationed in Germany. I fished a lot creek, stream, and rivers catching brown trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout all native no stocked. I joined the local Rod & Gun club and entered some fishing tournament. Made alot of great friends anyways stay safe out there and have a blessed day. Aloha from Kansas
I LOVE your fresh water videos. The views are so beautiful! This last week my brother took my son out fishing on Bucks Lake (farther up nor Cal) and they caught the most delicious Kokanee there. Smoked them up on the Traeger...so dang good!
i watch a lot of your vids and have to say... I noticed that you catching even a small river trout gets you more excited than a big ol' ocean fish. I'm exclusively a trout, fly guy. Not by choice but but obsession so I relate.
4:00 its not easy to catch anything at mid day on such calm water, no shame there. but always fun to try. 5:45 Looks fishy to me!! 13:50 feels like I'm there fishing with you, your comments are exactly what we all think when we are fishing!
The first fish you catch is called Himalayan trout(Schizothorax richardsonii ) in our local language it’s called “Asala” fish which is found in South Asia Himalayan cold water temperature average (8-22 d ce) This fish is really delicious to eat if you cook it with right ingredients 👌
cricket or grasshoppers, always best to hook it on the back from one side to the other side so legs can still move. Been trout fishing for almost 7 years and hoppers are the best when it comes to trout fishing. Trout can’t resist them.
Love the content. I'm not sure when this was filmed, but it looks recent. Might wanna check the california fire restrictions. Charcoal fires are restricted. Don't mean to be a downer, but it sucks seeing our forests and communities being burned.
in ohio we have them as well. called a hornyhead chub or sucker (Nocomis biguttatus) due to the multiple bumps on the top of their head. fun to catch on light tackle but i've never caught very big ones. suppose to be excellent catfish bait
Back when i fished. I used #6 hooks. in our lakes(summer) ice fishing we dropped down on size. One day we maxed out on 75 bluegills. My dad filleted all night😂😂
Man up Matt, you're makin us guys look bad!!! Lol. Just cup you're hand, trap them, and then manipulate them into your fingertips!! Crickets don't bite at all but Grasshoppers will surely try. They might freak you out a little at first but i have complete confidence that you will get used to it. Great video, as usual, keep em comin......
Great video Matt , I have a recommend lure for you to try it’s called “Jake’s spin a lure” so far when I have used it I have caught my limit(5) in Mount Shasta the fish go crazy over gold, silver, and black One
Wow, an open charcoal fire in a fire prone drainage with thousands of homes, people, wildlife, historical sites and the watershed itself above it. Almost this exact month and Date in 2013, the Darby fire was started within 100’ of that charcoal fire. Thousands of acres burned. 2 ancient Mi Wuk round houses burned, the watershed was nuked all because someone had a fire in that exact same spot.
@@OffBrandGolf you are correct. Can’t even blame my mistake on a typo. Sad part is, I have reached out to Matt about the use of fire before. The day before his video dropped a fire started by the plant. Thankfully it started early or we would still be watching it. I try not to give specifics of the area, don’t want it to be destroyed like other spots in our area.
Good way to tell if a rainbow trout is stocked or native is on stocked trout the adipose fins will be worn down straight on the tips of the fin the native trout will have the round tips still. The concrete in the hatcheries ware them down flat
Hey Matt. I dont know if you will see this. I met you at your block party to talk about that river where you caught your PB trout. I also recognize this location... the creek only runs for maybe 3 months of the year and even then the fish are tiny (like 6 inch brookies max). The lakes however - some are fantastic, I caught 100 fish in a day though it is hit or miss depending on the lake - I could recommended some good ones.
"The only thing you have to be aware of when fishing like this, is picking up the slack" As stranger approaches from behind completely unnoticed. Don't let your guard down out there Matts. I know you have a hand gun but you should have a dog with you when you're trekking alone out there.
8:00 that's a Sacramento Pikeminnow. Technically native to California but have become locally invasive in a lot of California rivers and streams where they previously were not known to live in. They're super bad for trout and salmon populations and are voracious predators which eat salmon/trout eggs and fry.
I know I have not finished yet but I would have hit the first lake cheater style and found some live bait live worms or larva grubs something and put it out all by it self on your smallest fly hook
Great video Matt, I don’t think people really understand what goes on behind the scenes as a videographer. The angles, different shots, continuity, etc…Just know it’s always appreciated when I watch your videos 🙌🏾
I think that is the reason he post one video a month is from All those editing😂
Need to obey the law, bro. The catch and cook isn't worth a forest fire.
Your Crickets look suspiciously like Grasshoppers to me.. 😉
🤭
Shhh! Don’t tell him.🤫😂
Obviously missed the insect class.
Grasshopper not cricket exactly
He know exactly what he is doing. He doesn’t want anyone to know the secret is grasshoppers and say it’s cricket so you use the wrong bait 😂
Matt my friend, a small butterfly net will get you all the grasshoppers, crickets and other desirable creepy crawlies you'll ever need. 😊
Great tip and thank you!
I was going to text him the same technique. Walking thru some of those mountain meadows when they are active and swishing the net back and forth and having enough bait for a week. Good times. That was a long sentence. I'm sure the wifey is going to bonk me on the head.😂😂😂❤
he could just use his fishing net, and these are grasshoppers not crickets
Grasshoppers have been my favorite trout bait since I was a little kid
I was just about to do the dishes looking for something to watch at the same time and this popped up!
Facts bro I'm cleaning the kitchen watching 😂
I have a pile of dishes in the sink 3 ft tall. I keep walking past it.
I just finished the video.

It must feel like heaven living there like a king!

Great job. Fished a lot here in the Adirondacks for 45 years. Love your videos!
I LOVE your fresh water videos. The views are so beautiful! This last week my brother took my son out fishing on Bucks Lake (farther up nor Cal) and they caught the most delicious Kokanee there. Smoked them up on the Traeger...so dang good!
Man thats such a beautiful spot to chill out and fish
Oh man....im so relieved that u actually brought a fork with u this time!
Those lakes looked good for a trip in May! When I could still walk I would fish the Merced river. It was a short trip to get there.
i watch a lot of your vids and have to say... I noticed that you catching even a small river trout gets you more excited than a big ol' ocean fish. I'm exclusively a trout, fly guy. Not by choice but but obsession so I relate.
Man... l still support the shows. But I started watching you years ago because I loved the ocean fishing catch and cook.
14:08 these are some of the Best moments of fishing 🎣 😊
That's a pretty good size river rainbow. Gonna have to try crickets!
Going to try the new bait as well
Might check for sucker species in that creek but might be a pike minnow.
I needed this one. Thank you Matt.
love this man thank you for still inspiring
I thought you only bought fly pole. Now i see a spinner rod and reel. Beautiful scenery.peacefull video. Thanks
He said after the first day he was going back, probably went home and grabbed other gear
Really good lesson with description

Grasshoppers in Sierra creeks are magic bait for browns
Love your vlogs bro makes me want to go fishing now !!!

Real fun video, think I would have went for two Trout but, very nice catch & cook 👍
Def going to be camping there in November
Hey Matt, Trout for Dindin🎉Enjoy!
JO JO IN VT 💞
Love the content. I'm not sure when this was filmed, but it looks recent. Might wanna check the california fire restrictions. Charcoal fires are restricted. Don't mean to be a downer, but it sucks seeing our forests and communities being burned.
That's a sacramento sucker fish. I caught one 3 times that size, in kern river area.
in ohio we have them as well. called a hornyhead chub or sucker (Nocomis biguttatus) due to the multiple bumps on the top of their head. fun to catch on light tackle but i've never caught very big ones. suppose to be excellent catfish bait
Like old times avocado and fish 🤙
Thanks brother... i love your content
Orange juice adds a nice flavor too
6:20 Someone's come to watch you ;) Great Video's
Would love to see you do some landlock striper fishing. New Hogan Lake & San Luis Reservoir isn't too far from u.
shoot ima try drifting live crickets now! thanks matts!!
Nice catch 🎣
Awesome video man. The best way I found to get grasshoppers is swatting them with my hat
perfect timing to watch on my break :))
Woo any day Matts posts is gonna be a good day!
Matts, look into getting a Gransfors Brux axe. Far lighter than what you are carrying and scary sharp and easy to keep that way.
Maybe catch the grasshoppers with your net, just an idea
Back when i fished. I used #6 hooks. in our lakes(summer) ice fishing we dropped down on size. One day we maxed out on 75 bluegills. My dad filleted all night😂😂

Duuude. I know what part of the river he was on here and I thought the exact same thing. But the Darby fire was 2001.

Just for future reference Matt, river rocks can explode when you add them to fire
Awesome ✌🏼❤️
Gettin ready to eat my pizza but saw the homie posted. Perfect timing 😎
Damn nice catch!
Looks a lot like a popular swimming area by lake spaulding. Cant be there though because there arent 200 ppl swimming haha
That first fish is a northern pikeminnow. They can get upwards of 15lbs.
a grasshopper hooked through the abdomen is the best trout bait, works well for just about any freshwater fish actually.
Be cool to see you do some handline fishing sometime.i keep my kbar handheld in my tacklebox just in case my pole breaks
Ahh now this is why the kid subscribed
I remember my first time fishing.
"jumping around heh!?" Lol
"The only thing you have to be aware of when fishing like this, is picking up the slack" As stranger approaches from behind completely unnoticed. Don't let your guard down out there Matts. I know you have a hand gun but you should have a dog with you when you're trekking alone out there.

8:20 that kinda looked like a pike minnow
i seem to remember this place...
I grab a handful of sand & throw it at the crickets it keeps them alive for bait just stuns them enough to put them on hook.
Bro you ever want to come up to Ontario for Musky fishing, open door policy up these ways. Cheers
I have a suggestion. How about Collab with the "Outdoor Boys" It will be a great video.
The trick is...being less scared of the cricket then the cricket is of you.
@ 7:50 That looks like a pikeminnow (formerly known as Squaw fish).
Love your mountain fishing videos. Barbless hooks? Would that explain why you weren't hauling them in?
Hey man come up to Burney California great hikes up here by the pit river and the lakes around here aren’t stocked except lake Britton
Cool old REI pack
Matt try Mosquito lake. We limit out there 3 days in a row.
I know I have not finished yet but I would have hit the first lake cheater style and found some live bait live worms or larva grubs something and put it out all by it self on your smallest fly hook
Those fish you didn't know the name of were mountain whitefish. They are native to the area as with the pnw as well
