Dude I just graduated Harvard because of this video and now I'm just chillin here in my garage with my Ferrari, but you know what I value more than this Ferrari? knowledge.
The particular method _used_ in the game (using Aiden's phone for everything) is a bit farfetched. A cellphone doesn't normally emit infrared or RF in the frequencies used by garage door openers, etc. The game handwaves it by saying everything is tied into CTOS, and Aiden (and/or DedSec) has a backdoor into CTOS. So in-game he's just telling CTOS "turn the lights at this intersection green" or "open this door". But as Sammy points out, a lot of what Aiden does in the game is at least plausible.
I don’t know about the airplane part, but you could totally hack into a car (typically electric and AI/internet connected), turn it on, increase its speed, and then, using the auto-break system, slam the breaks! ☺️✨
In the game, everything is centralized. But in the real world, having different technologies from different companies is what prevents this type of easy hacking from happening.
Not unless everything is running off of one really stupid company who doesn't look into obvious breeches. IRL it takes a lot of time and resources in order to execute any attack unless it's some petty DoS. The more complex the network or system, the more time and resources it would take. Your best bet IRL would be to be an insider with high access privileges but even then you would be found it pretty fast since there are fewer people at the top with access vs all the people at the bottom with little access.
@@JustSkram Actually not at all. Most of what he does are very simple systems. For example hacking cars, doors, gates and all that stuff is relatively easy (assuming you know what you're doing, which is kind of the premise here). @Finnegan Doyle ctOS in the game is the software that connects every single object to the same network so it's not just story line, it's the reason why the character can do all of that so fast, he'd understand and call it real.
@Finnegan Doyle I'd disagree, in terms of technical accuracy the IoT aspect and network interconnectivity of CtOS provides a massive platform to make many of the things possible.
Finnegan Doyle with how people nowadays want simplicity and convenience, the idea of combining every electronic based infrastructure in a city into being controlled by one operating system doesn’t seem to far fetched. There would be protests, but the idea of convenience is what most people would agree on.
DarkCeptor44 although it no doubt makes it easier having a back foot wouldn’t just allow you to press a single button on phone and instantly hack something, so I doubt he would call it real. It’s a game so it obviously wouldn’t want you to spend minutes to hours trying to hack something

Phone can't explode. If it heats up too much it will just fry the electrical components. And he said remote explosives like C4 was possible to hack. But the ones in watch dogs are frag grenades, they are not digital so they cannot be hacked.
You missed one small thing. In the game the whole city of Chicago is transformed into a smart city with CTos. Which could potentially make some of those hacks which cant be done doable.

6:20 Well on some Military grade laptops like ThinkPads or the Dell high end laptops the led is directly wired to the camera, with no way of remotely disabling the led.
Fun fact the development team asked real hackers and cyber security experts to review the game concepts and mechanics whilst they were making the game because they wanted to make the hacking aspects as real as they possibly could of course some of it is exaggerated for entertainment purposes but all of it is based on real world attacks
Actually the power isn't located in his phone that's why at the beginning he works with Damien so that he can hack faster, and that's also why he connects to CToS to use its power.

Nice Vanoss reference, I see you're a man of culture as well.
So I guess this game was more accurate than I thought.
Cool story bro

one of the many pros of privately owned infrastructure within a city
Yeah didn't you need access to CTOS servers to hack specific portions of the city
So you tellin' me that Aiden Pierce can be done irl?
Hang on im gonna get a trench coat and a cap real quick
Don't forget the baton.
You don't usually need high level access until you try to access core systems. You'd be surprised how bad security is even in big companies.

You guys probably didn't give him context about the CTOS and the IoT, things would make more sense for him.
@Finnegan Doyle ctOS in the game is the software that connects every single object to the same network so it's not just story line, it's the reason why the character can do all of that so fast, he'd understand and call it real.
@Finnegan Doyle
Well, a CToS-like system wouldn't be too out of the way of reality, and would allow for this kind of things.
