I hate how the killer literally told him he was gay, then tried to use the gay panic defense. So you pick up a gay man at a bar, tell him you are also gay, ask him to leave with you, then want to play victim when he hits on you!? So ridiculous! Nothing Matt could of done warranted what happened to him!

As soon as we got there we noticed everyone, I mean EVERYONE had a yellow thing tied around there arms... even the WYOMING FOOTBALL TEAM! Then we heard about MATTHEW. I want you to know that WY was supportive of him. I do believe the one boy (who was a scout) is write but he didn't. The other one obviously lied. Poor baby!!! This story is so disturbing-this poor boy! He did not deserve to die the way he did....he did NOTHING wrong. My heart goes out to his parents/family!
He was a drug addict who was drunk in a bar and left with two meth addicts, supposedly making a pass at one of them...so, IMO, he did a *lot* wrong. Of course, he didn’t deserve to be robbed and murdered, but he is the one who put himself into that situation.
If only money and drugs were their motivation, they would've taken his money and drugs and leave him (tied up) at the fence. But the brutality of the beating (of which he died) shows the hatred that was involved!
Still doesn’t show it was motivated because he was gay. And yes money / drugs is enough motive for severe beatings and murder. Ask the mafia, ask any organised crime family, ask most drug addicts when they need a fix... It is sickeningly common - just do an internet search and see.
yeah but not the hatred of him being gay. it was hatred fuelled by an awful drug that is infamous for making people aggressive. it was a robbery gone wrong. like all the other cases where someone breaks into someone else's house, realises they are home, and beats them up until they think they are dead so they can't snitch. this guy just happened to be gay and now that's the reason behind the attack? bullshit. also i'm lgbt+, and i don't want some death twisted into lgbt history when it has nothing to do with it.
Do not blame drugs for this, I did the same and more for 2 1/2 years and never felt like beating anyone one up. These two are not worthy of this interview. What went on then is going on now. Too much hate
Do you think these two guys would have done the same thing to Sheppard if they were not involve in drugs. Yes or No. If your answer is no, you are right. If your answer is yes, you are wrong. You can not blame the drugs but the drugs played a major factor in their decision at that time..
The drugs fuelled the hate Aaron had within himself about his own sexuality of being BI. Matthew being gay reflected that to Aaron, and Aaron hated Matthew for that The other guy was collateral damage, but nevertheless responsible for participating because he was too cowardess, and affected by drugs to think rationally to stop it. That's my observation and opinion. It's such a horrible heinous crime and my heart goes out to Matthew and his loved ones.

He said police knew McKinney was bi and that he knew Matthew. He said it was about Mathew’s regular $10,000 shipment was due. And McKinney tortured Mathew to get it. Apparently Matthew hadn’t received it.
Not that it maters bc Mathew is gone and never coming back. Why they killed leaves me numb just knowing how vicious they beat him. I will never forget Mathew we all know a tiny piece of him, he lives in our hearts.
Wow. This just sunk in. How sad. He was really a baby. He is at peace with our Creator now so let's think of him; not these two killers. I feel bad for all of the families. Too bad nobody saw the hate brewing in those two kids. All the discussion about sexual preference is a distraction from the magnitude of the world losing an innocent baby. What path would his life have taken?
I was fresh out of high school when this took place. I remained closeted here in the Great state of Mississippi for another 5 years after learning about Matthew Shepherd for the fear of a similar fate.
The saddest part of this story is one young man is dead and two have their version of what happened. When there are three sides to a story, and only two are being told, the story is as dead as the man who cannot speak his side.
The moral of this story is be smart and don't do drugs. ALL of these people had a drug addiction, including Shephard. You don't just ocassionally do meth. He put himself in a deadly situation by trying to trade drugs for sex. There were no innocents here. The parents don't want to accept the fact that their son's actions played a role in his death. Drug use never turns out well. Sad story.
20:03- “he said he was going to tell on me”-Someone that’s being “real cooperative” while being viciously beaten with a gun is NOT going to suddenly threaten “to tell” on anyone. You do the opposite, and start saying whatever you think will get that person to stop.
I remember this tragedy. Matthew Shephard was so handsome and was just beginning his life. I knew the claims that Matthew made a pass on Aaron McKinney was a complete lie. Most gay men don’t make passes on straight men. I actually feel bad for Russell Henderson. You can clearly see the remorse all over him. You can also tell he was telling the truth by his eye contact and overall demeanor. A part of me feels Russell has paid the price for his actions of tying Matthew up and not having the courage to stop the brutality of the crime and should be released. He deserves a second chance at life. But Aaron McKinney, not so much. You can tell he wasn’t telling the entire truth during his interview. I have seen what meth does to people. My ex-husband and father to my daughter began to use meth in 2018, literally out of nowhere. It made his so crazy. Pulling out guns on people, going to jail and losing custody of his daughter. I didn’t know much about meth then and had to research what it does to people because I knew something was seriously wrong with him. But I definitely think it was the meth, as well as a hate crime.
Wrong. It happened to me when I worked at a fitness center and it happened to one of my best friends copping a ride from a guy coming home from a party. It’s a tragedy he died like that but I wouldn’t put it past him that he tried to make a pass at that guy.
The guy told him he was also gay! DUH! Even if he did make a pass at him he literally told him he was also gay and then asked him to leave together! Regardless they murdered someone and left him to die alone! No amount of matthews actions justified that!
Drugs & Alcohol Turn People (Especially Loved Ones) Into Strangers. They lose themselves & we lose the person we really know. Yes hate crimes do happen. Still to this day. Unfortunately We won't ever know Matthew's side for what happened that night. Drugs or Not, Gay or Straight, He shouldn't have died. An the way those 2 guys left him like that says more than enough. McKenney said He felt that last blow to him was bad.....If he felt that & still walked away leaving him in the cold overnight beaten so badly you couldn't see his face with all the blood, he still could have taken him to get help. We won't know if Matthew would have survived, but that would have shown that they felt enough remorse to treat him like an actual human being an get him help.
It definitely was a hate crime. I just read Mckinny was interviewed in 2009 and basically admitted it. Also the level of brutality and rage suggests rage and hate.

I don't think Matthew was making sexual advances to them, they made that up to try & save their own butts. Mattew isn't here to tell his side of the story which really isn't fair. They were drinking, hostile & on drugs they took advantage & targeted Matthew thinking he had money. It was premeditated in stalking, targeting him. Matthew had no weapon on him, why would he want to get involved with these 2 cowards/ bullies. I think Matthew left the bar & they followed & bullied him into their truck. The Judge was right on their sentence. I don't think Matthew approached them at all, they said that to validate their actions. At 24: on the tape the reason why the savage beating is b/c he could identify & tell on them. LEARN TO LIVE IN PEACE I believe in life after death.
I'm confused....from the first time I heard about the Matthew Shepheard case, to this very day....I don't understand how the motive (brutally beating him to death in connection to his sexuality, vs brutally beating him to death with the purpose of robbery, or because they were high on drugs).....changes things.....what difference does it make? The whole "controversy" over whether it was a "hate crime", or was in no way related to Matt being gay, is to me, moot. They savagely beat an innocent young man to death. Does the motive for killing him make it any better, any worse? No. It's like saying that if the reason for beating him to death was anything other than because he was gay -isn't as bad as killing him solely because he was gay. People murder innocent people all the time for a plethora of reasons; financial gain, revenge, anger, losing custody of children, sex/love/lust, eliminating witnesses, serial killing/spree killing, just because they can, drugs, domestic violence related, mental issues....the list goes on and on, and all are just as bad, wrong, sad, undeserving, devastating to family and friends of the victim. I mean, there's ALWAYS a reason why a person commits murder/attempts murder/commits a brutal beating. Whether the reason is nonsensical, "real", imaginary, "logical" or illogical, whether the general public can comprehend the motive or can't comprehend or wrap their head around the causation or not.....there's always a reason. So the whole "debate" over this case, their motives, the "real story" behind the motive, and all this speculative shit over whether it was done beacuse he was gay, or because they were on drugs, or beacuse they were going to rob him, or was a combination of any/all those reasons....it was still heinous, regardless. And there's no mitigating circumstances in this case, no matter what the motive. Whether they knew him beforehand or not, etc. Matt was an unarmed kid, with no ill-intent towards them. Period. All other speculative debating on the motive is just muddying the waters, and a disservice to Matt, in my opinion. If Matthew was completely straight, was not a homosexual, and the events that took place were the same....this story wouldn't be much more than a blip on the trie-crime radar, and would most certainly not have captured the entire nation's attention on a minuscule level, if at all.....yet it would be just as devastating to Matthews friends and family, been just as physically painful to Matthew. And that's why this whole thing irritates me. That said, the attack on the two guys vandalizing cars in the apartment parking lot mere minutes (or even if it was a couple hours later), actually lends credence to their story, that the attack on Matt was mostly a result of a drug-fuled rage, than simply because he was gay, so I do believe them when they say it wasn't motivated primarily by Matthews sexual orientation. But again, what difference does it make one way or the other, when it comes to beating a 21 year-old unarmed guy to death? It's no-less sad, tragic, and wrong, than if it was just because he was gay. For what it's worth, I do feel they are both legitimately sorry for what they did, genuinely repentant. Not that that means they should be able to leave prison. They deserve punnishment for their actions, and I think they know that. And because of that, they aren't on my official list of the worlds worst people (which means nothing in the real world, and is simply my own personal thoughts and feelings).
Yes, the debate around hate crime vs. drug crime is moot from the point of view of the victim, but politically, from a true-crime standpoint, or for the teachable moment this was relating to our failed War on Drugs, it's worth getting to the truth, which is why I posted it (and is best summed up at 37:08 by Andrew Sullivan). And I disagree about mitigating circumstances: Russ Henderson is still in prison because he was lied to repeatedly and then assaulted/kidnapped that night by lunatic meth-head (and now apparently skinhead) Aaron McKinney. Russ should be free at this point.
@@mckernan603 @Patrick McKernan @Patrick McKernan Okay, you know, I'll concede to that astute point you've just made. I think my frustration is wrapped up in assigning levels of atrociousness to crimes based on who/what the victim did/was/represents, and what the general public seems to respond to most, usually surrounding "hot button" issues, or the "cause du' jour", and how this general line of thinking only serves to subjugate and divide us as a whole. Man/woman/child, black/white/Asian/hispanic, gay/straight, young/old, east/west/up/down/sideways....causation/motivation being sex/drugs/stupidity/anger/jealousy/revenge, anything and everything else.....it's all just so wrong, and I get perturbed when a crime such as this, gets mired down into political correctness crap, and the victim is seen as the posterboy (or girl) for a certain cause, and the perpetrators are given degrees or moral deference based upon the amount (or lack of) public outrage. That said, I wasn't in any way criticizing the posting of this program (hell, I've watched this exact one several times), but was criticizing many people's response to the programs insinuations, (right or wrong). Your point however, is duly noted. And while I struggle with the total culpability of Russ Henderson, what more he might have been able to do for Matthew, and to what extent he should be punnished for it, I would agree that at some point, if not already, he should be set free and have his debt to society (and Matthew), considered to be fully paid.
I am actually confused about the intent behind this show? Does everyone involved think that it is better under this light? Wow. And painting the murderers under the "real" victim light seems to not respect his memory.
I didn't get that the murderers were seen as victims from it at all. All the statistics show abused kids can often become desensitised & see it as a norm they model & repeat. Or, they repeat it as an attempt to take back their lost power.

No one "deserves to die"
@@January. BZZZT! Incorrect. Please try again.
He was a drug addict who was drunk in a bar and left with two meth addicts, supposedly making a pass at one of them...so, IMO, he did a *lot* wrong. Of course, he didn’t deserve to be robbed and murdered, but he is the one who put himself into that situation.
@@EYE_GOTCHA He did not deserve to die
If only money and drugs were their motivation, they would've taken his money and drugs and leave him (tied up) at the fence. But the brutality of the beating (of which he died) shows the hatred that was involved!
But what does it matter if the beating was because he was gay or a drug withdrawal reaction. End result was the same.
Still doesn’t show it was motivated because he was gay.
And yes money / drugs is enough motive for severe beatings and murder. Ask the mafia, ask any organised crime family, ask most drug addicts when they need a fix...
It is sickeningly common - just do an internet search and see.
👏👏👏👏👏👏💯agree!

yeah but not the hatred of him being gay. it was hatred fuelled by an awful drug that is infamous for making people aggressive. it was a robbery gone wrong. like all the other cases where someone breaks into someone else's house, realises they are home, and beats them up until they think they are dead so they can't snitch. this guy just happened to be gay and now that's the reason behind the attack? bullshit. also i'm lgbt+, and i don't want some death twisted into lgbt history when it has nothing to do with it.

Exactly never once murdered a damn soul! Disgusting

Saddening despicably Saddening heart wrenching to imagine what he went through. Im sorry we live in a disgusting world.
yes so sad how cruel human beings can be.

LEARN TO LIVE IN PEACE I believe in life after death.
you can tell its a hate crime by the way they are talking when speaking about gay people. they keep pausing etc the deserve to be in there for life
I'm confused....from the first time I heard about the Matthew Shepheard case, to this very day....I don't understand how the motive (brutally beating him to death in connection to his sexuality, vs brutally beating him to death with the purpose of robbery, or because they were high on drugs).....changes things.....what difference does it make?
At the funeral, hate in the name of God. It really boggles the mind!🤔

It is very hypocritical , evil, and very none christian for people who call themselves Christians to harass his parents at their sons funeral .This the very reason why I try to stay clear of people who claim that they are Christians ,but their action are the opposite of being a Christian .How can one state that they are Christians ,when they do hateful and hurtful actions against another person in the name of God.
I always thought that God was about love and not about hate !!!
Shouldn't matter what his sexual habits were, this is a very sad story and my prayers go out to the family I am so sorry that some people are just monsters 😔 God bless and may somehow you heal knowing that he is an angel is that's all he could ever be 👼
honestly, do you really believe in a loving God and in the guardian angels ...
if that really existed, why did he watch and take no action, as was the case with Hilter, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, with the earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis ...
where is he the Creator God when he is needed ...
where there is faith ... there is no place for thinking
@@freddenker9537 everybody has their own opinion, but yes I absolutely do believe because I know, I've seen for myself things that are unexplainable with my own eyes . And it doesn't matter if you believe me or not because I know it's to be true and that's all that matters to me.
Being gay is not a “habit”.
@@rydergw
yes correct it is innate and therefore immutable
@@freddenker9537 God blessed humans with free will, what you choose to do with that is on you!
I remember when this first happened. It was horrific and sad RIP Matthew
Also, why do so many straight guys think that gay men want them?
It's just not like that.
I must admit lesbian women are extremely flirty and aggressive just like men when they solicit straight women, so I don’t know
NO excuses for killing! If your mother was beaten and you were abused......all the more reason to NOT abuse or KILL!
Too bad the people saying that the poor kid was going to hell, that they don’t treat people who break one of the 10 Commandments or the other 635 (?) Commandments the same. I’m so sorry for what he and his family had to go thru
Those "635" commandments are under the Old Testament Law. We follow the New Testament Law. We are under grace. It's through only Yeshua HaMashiach, what He did on the Cross for us. Our sin separates us from Yahweh. And if you don't repent and believe in Yeshua; picking up your cross daily, than unfortunately you won't enter His Kingdom... So, if he didn't repent of his sins, unfortunately he is eternally separated from Yahweh, which is heartbreaking.
@@jess1987 hopefully while he was there he got forgiveness. It could be one reason why he wasn't taken fast. I honestly believe he made things right. We all sin but somehow people overlook the Bible and how many times it mentions verses about not being gay and God even set a city on fire over it. I don't understand why he wasn't taught better so although I feel for his parents I also feel a way because I don't think he was taught it was wrong.
What a terrible, tragic mess .. don't do drugs kids, please, please, don't do it, not even weed, it only leads to 💔
P.S. Who is gay now, after all these years in prison, with no chance of ever being free, or experiencing human touch 🤔
OMG Mathew, hun i'm a gay black guy but i wish i knew you, i would have protected you, you were all alone and seemed to be such a sweet person, i can't imagine the pain you went through, 😭😭😭😭😭😭, how could they do that to you, i'm so so sorry you met such a painful lonely and horrific death. I hope you're resting in peace, my late condolences to your friends and family. 😥
White gays hate you too
Hate is hate, sexuality is no ones business, a murderer is murderer. RIP
Has anyone ever been murdered in a loving way? All murders are a hateful crime. It doesn't just apply to certain groups of people. Any time special privileges or rights are given to certain groups you are in fact doing the very thing you are preaching against......discriminatng against all other groups. This case was a sad case of three lives being destroyed in an instant because of a stupid idea. More sadly, someone had their life taken because of that idea. Sad just like all of the other lives taken for no good reason.
This is an act of pure EVIL. To think others can do this is scary. I don’t understand what makes others stoop to this type of shit.
Yes you can understand. These people were all on METH. You’ve seen the documentaries about drug abuse to know it doesn’t have good results.
@@donttalktomeyoureannoying8736 Drugs or NOT- I can’t! There are tons of people on drugs that don’t do this 👏🏻
I'll never be part of an religion. I've found to be judgemental, intolerant, hateful and hypicrital
I totally agree
Extremist can exist even "religious zealots". Don't use that as an excuse to live and die in your sins.
His case and Teena Brandon's case are proof that tolerating or ignoring hate actually contributes to hate and it's violence.
If those are the only two proofs you have then you need to broaden your horizons. What about the atrocities towards the Jews, Native Americans, African Americans, etc.?
@@your1supporter I gave you two examples out of a number that's impossible to guesstimate especially considering hatred, prejudices, biases, etc are still prevalent today. None of the other groups are left out. I gave the example relevant to this specific case. Go tell the homophobics, racists, sexists, etc to broaden their horizons. They're the ones causing this problem!
Teena Brandon case is different.
