For someone to hear another person screaming for help, in distress, and do NOTHING is obscene and a cowards way. Lives can be saved if people only react. We were camping once and heard a couple arguing. Next we heard her screaming for help. We called 911 and the police were there within 3 minutes. He was stabbing and choking her. She lived and I hope, got away from that psychopath that called himself her husband.
You say that but the VAST majority of people would do the same - people are generally cowards and will act in self preservation if it means ignoring a possibly violent situation
I agree...she is an idiot!!! You can remain anonymous. Years ago I called 911 when a neighbor above me was beating his girlfriend. No way I could ignore her screams and crying!😢😢
@@WideAwakeHuman not true, it's a choice to do nothing just as it is a choice to be the one to do something. Make a vow to yourself right now to always be the one to act. I did.
I had a neighbor one time around 1 am screaming. At the time l didn’t know it was her. I called the police to report because l didn’t see anyone but l could hear the screams. Eventually, the Police came. I stepped outside and by that time l could see it was her. She was having some sort of reaction to some medicine. She did get some help. The next day her Dad was so appreciative because it could had gone wrong for her if l hadn’t called for help. We are all here to help one another.
Hello 👋 how are you doing today? I hope this year brings happiness, peace and love all over the world 🌎 I’m originally from Canada 🇨🇦 grow up in Fort Worth Texas, currently living in Key West Florida. Where are you from 😊😊if i may ask?😊
Gretchen was my teacher in NJ before she moved to FL. Middle school. I was devastated to see her photo and story on UA-cam last yr. I remember when I was in middle school, she had just gotten her first teaching job. She also was a student teacher for me as well before hand. She was a beautiful, fun but respected teacher among her students. I wish this man, I won't even say his name, never gets out. It says he will be in his 80s, but her daughter will never see her mom. Prayers to her family. I can't say enough about Mrs. Crane (her Maiden name, bc it is NOT Anthony).
@NFS305 just saw this... I'm not sure. She was Gretchen Crane and then O'Keefe when married another teacher in our school. They did end up getting divorced so she possibly had already done the whole process once to change her name back to her Maiden name, Crane. Plus I am thinking that bc she has a daughter, she kept it for purposes of having the same last name as her~
@@ryleenikola5734That is why my mom didn't change hers back after divorcing my dad. She had been divorced before and had 2 children with first husband and they had a different last name. She said she wanted to go back to her maiden name but didnt want all of us to have different last names.
@@NFS305Most don't. My mother in law has been divorced for 15 years and still goes by her married name, and he even remarried. She has three children, 2 boys and a girl. The two boys obviously have the same last name and so do three of her grand children. My mother remarried 7 years after my father passed, and she didn't change her last name to her new married name for a few years because of my sister and I. My aunt also still goes by her last husband's name, and she didn't even have children by him.
This is my friend. She was the lifeguard at our high rise apartment in the early '90's, and she babysit our daughter (who is now 26 years old) when she was attending classes. What a beautiful girl she was and the world is less of a place with Gretchen gone 😥
I cannot believe the person who killed her is catching less grief than the person who failed to call 911! To the very end, David avoids responsibility for his crime.
It depends on where you live. You could be labeled a snitch if you live in a bad neighborhood. You call the police and the police will come to YOUR door in sight of the criminals for details. The court papers then name you as a witness with your private information revealed. The police will offer you no protection and the criminals know this. A lot of criminals believe that dead people tell no tales. We need better policing period!
Maybe she thought someone else would call the police, or she feared reprimand from a killer, or being afraid to overreact. Better always call to check if everyone is ok. Not sure she’s a cold blooded bystander.
As soon as the husband/boyfriend is described as "charming," you know how these cases are going to turn out. So terribly sad. May Gretchen's family find peace.
@Maryclaire pugh YES. I really couldn't beLIEVE how calm Kobe was during the incident at the mall(?) I was seriously thinking, "did this disgusting man DRUG his sweet dog?!" Idk, but I have never seen a "calm" husky haha they are wild af! Kobe is such a good boy. I'm so glad he has a better life now.
I’m just really failing to understand how someone can say they clearly heard a “blood curdling scream” and “a woman screaming help help help me” and just go on about their day. May Gretchen be at peace in her final resting place.
That baffles my mind and sends chills up my spine. She even told the press as if it was no big deal. Zero remorse for her inactions. And zero empathy. Cold.
As a survivor of domestic abuse, the one time I dared to scream as I was pulled by my hair to the top of the stairs, was the last physical abuse that monster did. Only because I screamed, and a neighbour heard me. And the neighbour acted. Don’t ignore real screaming..we instinctively know a scream of fear and pain. Could have been a different outcome…..neighbour.
40 this June... And a 2x domestic violence survivor. I screamed out for help in the apts I lived in with the human monster... Someone heard me and called the cops... I think about them and am grateful for them everyday. NEVER HESITATE TO CALL THE POLICE IF YOU BELIEVE SOMEONE'S LIFE IS IN DANGER! YOU MIGHT SAVE A LIFE!!
Pray you both got well in your mind and away from monster's. One thing I try to tell anyone that is trying to leave is NEVER let them know you are leaving and if possible where you have gone.
The HUGE amount of survivor's guilt I would have every single day for the rest of my life because I heard a woman scream in fear and pain AND STILL CHOSE NOT TO CALL 911 is enough to haunt me right now...dang...
God, please let me have enough care and concern for people that if I hear someone screaming I don’t rationalize a reason to not call the police, but get help. We’ve been conditioned so long to just mind our business, that we miss opportunities to help people.
Precisely! And abusers use that to their advantage. They tell victims that no one will hear them or if they do, no one will call the police and in fact the abusers brainwash their victims about calling police in general it becomes a “violation of loyalty” BS. Bottom line… let’s break this mindset of not sticking our nose in someone else’s business if it means it can potentially save a life!! 🙏🏼
I call the cops and DNT care about what anyone says....I hear shootings going on and it was right up the street from me... yepppppp....you can hear it...I just stay low..most people don't know gun fire...or they are with tv or music on..
Like it or not, some people are of the type to mind their own business regardless of the circumstances. Some don’t want to be involved, some don’t like police, and some second guess themselves.
That sorry neighbor. I hope she hears those screams in her dreams for the rest of her life. When you hear those kind of screams, you know someone is dying, and she just went about her day.
Just like everyone else I’m in complete shock that the cowardly neighbor failed to act in that vital moment, she could’ve possibly saved Gretchen’s life. Shame on her. We are supposed to look out for one another, not turn a blind eye because it’s “none of our business”. Rest in peace Gretchen
Maybe you're new to True Crime, but that's sadly very common. In many cases, people don't call police when they hear or even see things. In many cases, if a woman escapes, or survives, & reaches the road to look for help, most cars will keep driving, though one person may call 911 as they continue driving. And its so common, that we tell women that if they are attacked, they shouldn't scream rape, they should scream fire, because that is a danger for everyone & makes people more likely to take action.
@@nicholasschoonbeck6866 not new to true crime at all lol it’s pretty much all I watch. I’m aware that people don’t act in moments like this, many don’t take the opportunity to call 911 in suspicious situations but this case in particular is special in my opinion. The neighbor GROSSLY missed an opportunity to save someone’s life and I believe most people would call 911 if they heard the things she heard.
I understand what you mean but the only coward I see is David Anthony, he is the one who did this, the neighbor failed to act, but it does not implicate them...Big difference between the two.
I can’t believe a person can hear a woman screaming and saying no and not call 911…seriously what are they thinking! What if it was her who needed help and everyone ignored her?
A few days ago, I heard a child screamed. This was not the first time, so I didn't hesitate to call the police. The boy is about 10 years old. His family members abuse him. Since the police got involved, I have not heard anything. That neighbour failed the victim in this case. Sometimes, when we hear screams, they are cries for help.
Something similar just happened in my town. A girl went missing for 10days. A neighbor had said she heard screaming from the apartment near here. She said she didn't want to bother to call because it's usually nothing. That girl was found on the side of the road inside a coffee table that had a hinged lid. Her coffee table that was missing from her apartment. I can't fathom why that neighbor didn't call. If called and it ended up being someone setting up surround sound and didn't feel guilty for calling.
@@Livetoeat171 people screamed when they're excited too. I guess we just have to know the difference. Because I won't call the police for my neighbour who screams out her lungs when her husband is home.
I mean there are some places in the u.s.a. where calling the police can be an offense. So for example there's some cities where if police are called to the same address or by the same phone number a certain number of times within a year it's like a misdemeanor or something. And sometimes you don't have control or knowledge of how many times people who lived at the address that you live at called
A moral civic duty, after hearing things she said she heard said. But had no problem.casually walking up to this cop n says what sounded like an obvious physical attack.
I'm curious how much of his background was she aware of before she married him and brought him into her home. The more I hear of these stories, the more I think people should pay for a full background check before inviting a stranger turned lover to move into their home.
I’ve done background checks on all my exes 🙈 guys will think I’m crazy I’m like a a women with a child I need to know what’s going on before it gets anywhere
I don’t get who she loved more her daughter or him? Why get him in the same house with 9-10 yo girl? Some women just forget that not every man is what you see!
@@liliivanova2920I'm sure she loved her daughter. I'm thinking she just made an error in judgment that cost her life. Hopefully others will learn from this situation and be extra careful about moving a person into their home.
Absolutely unbelievable that the neighbor that heard the blood curdling screams and hearing her fighting for her life didn't call the police. We as humans have to be more engaged than that. It might not have saved her life, but he probably would have been caught sooner.
This husband committed a horrific crime. A female that lives nearby, hears Gretchen screaming and yelling “stop, your hurting me” and choses to ignores this. Not only is this shocking, but it is deeply disturbing on so many levels. Did the neighbor that failed to report the screaming know David Anthony? If yes, I wonder what her relationship with him is? Some states have a “ failure to report a crime” law. I hope the authorities look into this.
My ex pushed me to the bed and said, "I'm going to make sure you never do that again!" and started pounding me. I had hit him in the back of the head with my wallet because he said something rude to me. Luckily, a neighbor called and police came fast. He was still hitting me. To this day, I don't know who called but I am so grateful! He was arrested and put in jail.
I can tell you why. When he met her, he had nothing. She became a payday. It made him look successful. When she put him out, he moved to Mom's apartment. Big step down. You don't do that to a criminal. I've seen it before. And he had undeniable rage. 😢
I’m uncomfortable with your remark “you don’t do that.” It sounds like this guy had a lot of people fooled. She did everything she could to protect herself. I left an abusive marriage after 14 years and my ex stalked me and I finally had to move to a big city in another State and rebuild my life when I was 40 years old. Statistics show the most dangerous time for a woman in a controlling and/or abusive marriage/relationship is the first 2 years AFTER she leaves.
yes, i hope she reads what everyone is saying and feel about her cowardness. Hope she becomes a better human being seeing she did wrong. Will see see that? I sure hope so. God help her..Amen
28:16 - His initial reaction wasn't that he never killed anyone. Upon learning his charge was for Homicide- he simply asked "for who?" I wish the Detective had followed up with "What do you mean? You killed more than one person?"

@@hensonlaura I understand that but he seams WAY TO COOL about all of it. I stand by the fact that I don’t believe it was his first time killing someone. Plus the random name change screams something is up with him.

Like Justine Damond. She called cops to report a woman being assaulted and the cops shot her dead when they arrived. You have to be crazy to call the cops in the USA. They are brutal murders or they plant evidence on you.
Good job to the neighbor for hearing everything and not being nosy. Goes back to bed and remembers that night everyday 2-years later just to tell 48 Hours. Props to her, what an amazing neighbor. Just the type of person I need living next door to me.
She should have called the police even if it just screaming but the fact that she heard you are hurting me is very disturbing but who knows she have her reasons
This guy has to be one of the dumbest criminals I've ever seen, just as Gretchen's neighbor is one of the biggest cowards I've ever seen. What a cluster fvk of a tragedy. My heart goes out to the daughter.
I wouldn't credit criminals with being intelligent, especially the ones who get caught. I'm shocked he had a head start, was on the road for several days and had only gotten to Las Cruces. I've driven across country multiple times and if I had murdered someone, in those three days, I would have been in Mexico some time in the second day.

I always call. There is once I saw a strange expression from a young lady with a man, and I called the police.I would rather to make a mistake than to let her go and something happens to her. I experienced similar situation when I was attacked on street by a random person, and no one offered help or call for me. It was extremely sad. Just call, everyone!. In most countries in Europe, the neighbor who heard the cries for help would be punished for not calling the police. What a terrible person this neighbour is! I hope she can't sleep well since she knows she didn't give Gretchen a chance to be saved.
I wouldn't want to live in a country that punishes you for not making a phone call. The fact is, if she lived in one of those countries she wouldn't have admitted to have heard something and not called, and the police wouldn't have had some vital information.
I helped my wife get out of an abusive relationship with her first husband. She stayed until her kids were grown but the hell she lived with was atrocious. She feared for her life daily. We have a beautiful loving relationship. She's a wonderful woman and didn't deserve the hell she lived in. She was seriously injured a few times. I'm so sorry this woman couldn't escape this monster she was with. I'm so sorry to hear so many women are treated this way. I hope every woman in a violent relationship can find a way out.
It's not always a good outcome unfortunately. Sometimes they get adopted but even cases where the kids live or one kid I saw as an adult still wasn't sure what happened to his puppy once he was taken after his dad killed his mother. It's a famous crime and his channel is about surviving... Telling detectives his father killed her and his father is in jail still ga lighting him and he reads the letters in videos. He finally met someone who told him he got his dog all those years ago and he started bawling. It's another great video..
It's infuriating when someone hears the struggle and doesn't call the police. Unreal!!!😡 People that blatantly ignore obvious signs of distress should be held accountable in some way.
Agreed. Honestly charge them with obstruction of justice or hindering an investigation. Something! If you hear something or see something SAY something. I bet they had to blur her face bc knowing that she missed the chance to potentially save this woman’s life, she probably feels a lot of shame and guilt, as she should and I assume she doesn’t want to be known. Even if she had called and they weren’t able to save her, she could have known she did everything she could to help someone clearly in dire need of it. Very disappointing and I will just never understand why she wouldn’t have just called???
His Mother KNEW!!! She knew about his name change. His past record. As a parent I am so angry and appalled at parents who protect their ADULT children!!!

@@joegroves4325 In America, 38 years doesn't mean 38 years, with good behavior they can be paroled sooner, even notorious convicts like Manson kept coming up for parole and all it takes is a favorable parole review (and the incentive to save money by getting him out of prison early) , and he's back on the streets.

The thing is his anger towards her was still there after he killed her. He let his rage out at the cops. That emotion doesn’t go away just because he killed his target. He’s a narcissist and his ego is still bruised.
I'm fascinated with the interviews in these 48 hours mystery series. The people being interviewed already know the outcome of the case in most cases...they already know someone is dead, the perpetrator is imprisoned etc...yet the tenses they use and the sentence formations seem to indicate something ongoing like the outcome is yet to be determined. It keeps the mystery alive for the viewers. Very elaborate work writing these scripts or directing them to respond in a particular manner and even getting some of the victim's family members to be conscious of what they are saying and then editing these later. A lot of work indeed! Well done!
It's really such a shame that someone arrested after following teenage girls can only spend a few days in jail. It clearly usually points to a greater intent than just following and stalking, and is often followed by violent behavior like this. I wish we could do more. Prayers to Gretchen's family
With him knowing he had already murdered someone, and possibly feeling that he would eventually get caught, I feel the girls he decided to follow were at great risk. So glad they called it in.
Well, without a long list of documented priors, it is difficult for law enforcement or a court to guess at someone's intent and sentenced based on that. On the other end, many corrupt officials would certainly abuse that if it did exist. Besides, many government agencies are filled with pedos (see: DOJ, Department of Education, HHS, IRS...), so some of them have no interest in stopping creeps from creeping.
I will never understand how someone can hear a person screaming like that and not call for help. That is the least you can do, is call. You're one cold hearted person to listen to that a do nothing.
I don’t understand that either. Like, I get not wanting to get involved in other people’s business but when there is clear harm going on! You call! We had to call cops on our old neighbors a few times because you could hear them slamming each other against the wall and screaming at each other. Maybe nothing came of it from the cops coming out, but I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if we didn’t at least try to help. Geez.
Something else is also pure evil....standing by hearing someone screaming and saying "stop you're hurting me" and doing NOTHING to help. Not even calling 911. What a selfish heartless society!
The person messed up when they texted saying, I am on a ventilator! If she was in ICU, she would be unable to text that. Very sad, the evil going on out here. So much for her daughter to go through and the neighbor heard her cry for help and did nothing.
It is terrible the neighbors ignored her screams. They should of called the cops and maybe it would of saved her. I hope Gretchen's family finds closure and peace .
As someone who lost their mother at a young age it’s such a horrible tragedy! She is going to hurt for the rest of her life. No mother to pick out a prom dress, help dress her for her wedding, see her grandchildren grow up! He also robbed the daughter of a life with her mother !! 😢
That is why I wish all women with children would think 10 times more before bringing another “dad” in the house! Specially with the big girls, actually with any children of yours. Your children being under strange person’s supervision? No, that is absolutely terrifying! “Bonus dad”, bonus sh…t nah.
No offense, but that’s a lot of assumptions you make about the future of the daughter and even the relationship of the mom and daughter. I know my mom didn’t help me pick out my prom dress - I had to pay for it myself. My niece didn’t even get a homecoming or prom because of “covid.” I also never got married, nor had kids. My mom and I have fought like cats and dogs forever, as did my brother and mother. Neither of us have had contact with her for years because of the stress and drama that comes when she was in our lives. Just remember that when people get murdered, friends and family will say nothing but positive things about the victim. It’s very improper to any speak ill of them. We really don’t know what the future will be for the daughter, nor what her relationship with the mother was like or would have been like when the daughter got older.
My mom died when I was 13, I'm mourning her still at 56 y/o; it never goes away. Since no one took care of us after she died, our (my sister & I) our lives were ruined. No supervision, no guidance, tolerance not love. We weren't protected and were easy pickings for sexual predators. When my husband beat me up I called my father and asked him to help me. His reply was, "sounds like a personal problem". My mother would have had a very different response. So many times I missed my mother
I think it's obvious why he ended Gretchen's life. He wanted to get back with her, and living with his mother was humiliating for him. She refused but he would not take no for an answer. If he couldn't have her then nobody would. Rip Gretchen. You met a bad one.
"This case hit differently. We're talking about someone who is a mother, daughter, sister, friend..." Yeah. No other missing person is any of those things.. Such a different case.. 🙄
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that and thought what a stupid comment of hers that was... So she's basically saying she's only ever dealt with male victims (who could be fathers, sons, brothers, friends but not mothers, daughters or sisters), or only with female orphaned victims who've somehow lived in a bubble that they don't even have any friends. Either seems unlikely 🙄
THIS is why I look out the window when there’s a ruckus on the street and ring my neighbors up when I hear something concerning in the house. That one time out of 99 could be when something terrible happens and your help could save a life. Don’t be that woman. Stay safe but also stay vigilant.
I'm known as the nosy neighbor who checks out the window several times a day. I called the fire dept. when my neighbor across the street, and over one, had smoke billowing out the back door. There was about a foot of snow on the ground, I got my boots on quickly and trudged thru the snow to go get her out of the house, but as I was crossing the street, the Fire truck pulled up and we all ran in together, only to find she was drying a load of clothes, and with the subzero temps outside, the 'steam' came out of the pipe near the back door! So ... I dragged the fire dept. out for nothing, but better safe than sorry! (I've been in two fires before)
As a person in a previous domestic violence relationship. I would pray that someone would call the cops when he would beat me because after doing it myself many times and them doing nothing I just stopped doing it. It's not always possible for people to stand up for themselves.
We were saying goodbye to our company on our front porch when we heard a scream coming from a deserted area where an old brewery existed. We immediately called the police and advised them of where it came from. They found a female that had been taken at knife point off a bridge and down to the old brewery. They did not catch the guy but the female was safe. Unfortunately when our local news paper reported the incident they included our address as the persons reporting the scream. My mother was furious as she had two teenage daughters living at home.

After first looking into the research regarding the psychology of the Bystander Effect- *the inhibiting influence of the presence of others on a person's willingness to help someone in need* -I took a personal vow to ALWAYS be the one to act should I ever come into a situation where one thinks to themselves "should someone do something?" I'm fairly young, but already I've had occasion to take that vow to task several times. I've called to report swerving, dangerous driving. A car upside down in some woods below the highway, a large tree branch hanging on a powerline, a sketchy looking dude running through backyards, a freshly fallen tree on the roadway, a dog off the side of the road alone and looking frightened. And finally, disturbing screams from a camp site. There's more than that, but what I can say is that 9/10 these situations are by and large relatively low stakes. But once you prime yourself to be the one that acts, should you ever find yourself in a high stakes situation you won't be shy to act.
Am i the only one sitting here thinking its highly suspicious that he asks "for who?" ... does that mean he's killed before?? i know he's trying to come across as innocent but asking "for who" does the complete opposite of that and raises concerns for me.
What is wrong with people who hear something serious and don't call police? That neighbor should be ashamed of herself and those screams should haunt her until the day she leaves this earth. There is NO excuse for her inaction.
Well actually the neighbor has every right to mind her own business and not get involved, which is what she did. It’s not her duty to call anyone regardless of what you think it’s just not simple as that. Some people will call some people won’t.
I can’t imagine hearing someone scream like that & NOT calling 911. That makes me want to tell my neighbors if they ever hear me or anyone else for that matter scream like that to CALL THE POLICE IMMEDIATELY!!!
In the 70’s I screamed for help in a 300 unit apartment building and it took several hours before someone called for the police to come. It’s a nightmare to be involved in this situation.

Nothing significant has happened in our society to protect women against DV, my dad used to beat my mother to a pulp, I got in the middle because not one neighbor would help. The cops would tell him to go cool off for the night while she has a broken nose, busted lips and horrible lacerations. That was the 60’s
I may be wrong for feeling this way and maybe not. I hope the neighbor that heard Gretchen screaming for help hears it every time she lays down and closes her eyes, I hope it haunts her. If only she had just done the right thing then Gretchen might still be here today.
Another person on here said she should've made some phone calls. Lmao Like you have time for all that. Said she didn't call cuz afraid of being a snitch. Geez man. Some ppl.. no brains or common sense.
The fact the neighbor heard Gretchen's screams "No!," "Stop it!," "It hurts," and did absolutely nothing will haunt her for the rest of her life. As for a reason why David murdered Gretchen, it is pretty obvious. She recognized he was crazy, put him out and filed for divorce. Simply, "REJECTION!" Dude had gotten by on his height and good looks for so long that no woman left him, but rather he did the leaving. If he could not have her nobody could. I have seen his type before. He is a psychopath and stalker. It would not surprise me, he watched Gretchen for a while, stalking her every move, then wooing and eventually marrying her. A quick background check on this manic would have made all the difference in the world. If, I am at all wrong, I stand corrected.
I know that part surprised me. And judging by the amount of comments against the neighbor, most people are very upset. Rightfully so. Unfortunately, the neighbor did not call. She must've had tremendous guilt afterwards, by her later actions of approaching the police and the media, and relating what she heard. In a way, I feel bad for the neighbor. For she has to live with what she didn't do.
I remember when I was living in an apartment complex, I was awaken out of my sleep around 3am…. I looked out of my window and saw a man beating a woman… I called 911, gave them the name of the complex and the area where I saw the fight. I asked that I remain anonymous because I don’t want anyone potentially coming to my apartment; however I still wanted to make sure the girl received help!!! LEO arrived about 5 minutes and arrested the guy….
It’s shocking to know how many people could have been saved if witnesses would had just called 911! Then they have the guts to report the crime to the police afterwards when it’s too late! As if they expect to be called heroes!
I have wondered how many murders slipped under the radar during the height of the pandemic with lockdowns and medical and post mortem facilities so overwhelmed...
There are people that let their family members get sick and die, especially the elderly....what I've seen can't be stupidity because they knew how to take care of themselves.
I don't believe too many post mortems were preformed during the pandemic, especially after the vaccine roll out. They didn't want to know the harms that experimental drug caused and those effected are still fighting to get help.
She. got head over heels for his tall figure and immediate charm. But soon she discovered whose kind of man he was. Therefore, she filled for divorce. However, he had no money, no job, no opportunities. He wanted to be accepted back by his ex-wife. For support... her refusal costed her life.😮 He deserves to get rotten in jail😢
As soon as they received a text message saying, “I am on a ventilator” that should’ve been a BIG red flag to show that it wasn’t her sending the messages because you’re unconscious whenever you’re on a ventilator!

Totally agree!! I cannot believe the neighbor did nothing!
I agree...she is an idiot!!! You can remain anonymous. Years ago I called 911 when a neighbor above me was beating his girlfriend. No way I could ignore her screams and crying!😢😢

Curious why she didn’t change it back after the divorce
@NFS305 just saw this... I'm not sure. She was Gretchen Crane and then O'Keefe when married another teacher in our school. They did end up getting divorced so she possibly had already done the whole process once to change her name back to her Maiden name, Crane. Plus I am thinking that bc she has a daughter, she kept it for purposes of having the same last name as her~
I was thinking she looked familiar. I'm from NJ, this wasn't from the north jersey area was it?

They would have called only if she had screamed without wearing her mask.

@@brandyyolidio4213 …She’s just as guilty as the murderer, because she could have stopped it, but she chose to be complacent instead.
How can you literally hear someone being brutally murdered and not call the police or do anything. That’s criminal in itself

Bystander Effect, it’s the worst
It depends on where you live. You could be labeled a snitch if you live in a bad neighborhood. You call the police and the police will come to YOUR door in sight of the criminals for details. The court papers then name you as a witness with your private information revealed. The police will offer you no protection and the criminals know this. A lot of criminals believe that dead people tell no tales. We need better policing period!
Maybe she thought someone else would call the police, or she feared reprimand from a killer, or being afraid to overreact. Better always call to check if everyone is ok. Not sure she’s a cold blooded bystander.
No doubt. If you are an EMT and see a person passed out and don't help, you get in trouble. WTH wrong with that lady!?
I cannot understand people not picking up a phone and calling the police. How utterly selfish

The whole time I was concerned about Colby.
That gave me peace that another family took the dog.
Omg I thought I was the only one worried about the dog lol! I’m glad he was adopted but at the same time it would of also been nice to see if he could of went back home w/ his mom instead. As long as he is happy & safe!

What a horrible neighbor!!!
She heard all this and didn't call the police unreal.
I agree it angers me so much. I hope karma gets her and nobody calls when she screams for help
Mrs H 🇬🇧 ... It happens more often than you think where people rely on others to act... I bet she's traumatised by this now... It's a hard lesson to learn and live with...❤
Yeah what a coward
Hopefully she will scream for help one day. And no one will respond.
Name those countries. I don't believe you.

I really like when they tell us what happened to pets involved in these stories. I’m always worried about their well-being too
It's not always a good outcome unfortunately.

🌸 agreed, she blatantly ignored it

Uh, 38 years isn't much of a "deal"...dude will be 81 if he ever gets out.

Well done!
48 hours sucks
They just preface their questions with "at this point" and remind respondents to speak in the present tense. Not a huge amount of work.
That’s a really cool observation. I never considered that. You’re right.
Dateline uses similar scripting... Even though the outcome is known...the stories are presented as mysteries in present tense mostly...as they unfold
Very observant!!

It's really such a shame that someone arrested after following teenage girls can only spend a few days in jail. It clearly usually points to a greater intent than just following and stalking, and is often followed by violent behavior like this. I wish we could do more. Prayers to Gretchen's family
I feel so bad for the dog ….. he sat quietly in the car while his owner was losing it
With him knowing he had already murdered someone, and possibly feeling that he would eventually get caught, I feel the girls he decided to follow were at great risk.

Exactly right? I mean that neighbour heard her plead and scream yet they do nothing, like absolutely nothing? How could they even sleep peacefully ?
@@Uniqueen1114 That's what I was thinking. How could you just go to sleep after that?
That part gave me the chills. I'm sure she's going to carry a lot of guilt.
Geez.
Unfortunately, there are plenty of people who just don't care unless it's about them. Their apathy is very real. Scary.
Something else is also pure evil....standing by hearing someone screaming and saying "stop you're hurting me" and doing NOTHING to help. Not even calling 911. What a selfish heartless society!
Sad too that it was another woman who ignored her cries for help.
The neighbor is not responsible in any way the guy would have vomit the crime anyways.
The person messed up when they texted saying, I am on a ventilator! If she was in ICU, she would be unable to text that. Very sad, the evil going on out here. So much for her daughter to go through and the neighbor heard her cry for help and did nothing.
That is the same thing I wrote!

I was so upset with this neighbour saying what she had and did not call the police.
@@EllaBella-76 The dog was adopted from the shelter.

You are a good neighbor. No higher compliment than "a good neighbor" ❤️

After first looking into the research regarding the psychology of the Bystander Effect- *the inhibiting influence of the presence of others on a person's willingness to help someone in need* -I took a personal vow to ALWAYS be the one to act should I ever come into a situation where one thinks to themselves "should someone do something?"
I'm fairly young, but already I've had occasion to take that vow to task several times.

While I mostly agree, let's place the actual blame on the perpetrator: David Anthony Deutsch.
Totally agree with you
You're right
The fact the neighbor heard Gretchen's screams "No!," "Stop it!," "It hurts," and did absolutely nothing will haunt her for the rest of her life.
