if anybody's experiencing weird mirroring problems at 12:38 with the legs not aligning to the reference, you can fix this by applying all transforms by clicking on "Object" at the top in Object mode window, clicking "apply" then clicking "all transforms" after. then you can add the mirror modifier without giving our elfish woman detached legs!

im so insanely grateful for this! ive been wanting to get into character modelling for so long and as a dude with an attention span shorter than himself, this is the only tutorial i can sit through
This process for building character models has been what I'm missing when it comes to modeling and work flow. This's already much more fun and enjoyable to work with than how I use to make character models. Fantastic tutorial to follow along with and build. I'm off to part 2
I took "game design" classes in college and they taught me some basic 3d modeling (hard surface) stuff in maya, but it doesn't compare to how comprehensive and helpful this tutorial is. There's other modeling tutorials out there but this one is so nice for literally walking through Step 1 and beyond and you saying exactly what you're doing even if its the same thing over and over again (add cube, subdivide) it's just So Nice, compared to ones where it's like "okay start with your already blocked out form" or "we'll sculpt a whole face from just a circle" despite not having any sculpting skills. Thank you so much for posting this and can't wait to try part 2
This is by far the best, easiest to follow sculpting tutorial ive seen for Blender... Character sculpting has always seemed so daunting no matter how many tutorials I watch, but this was so easy to follow and understand.
Thank you. As you say right in the beginning. Yes, there are thousands of tutorials out there, of blender specifically, more so than others, which makes it increasingly difficult to get a full picture of the whole process, and the journey can be discouraging at best. So my sincerest thanks for your wisdom in doing this.
Your welcome! The legwork trying to find the right information to make the things you want in the way you want was the worst part of learning blender. Although nothing feels cooler than watching a video that's completely unrelated to sculpting characters and picking up an awesome tip that dovetails into your own workflow!
@@BranSculpts the whole process really, mostly getting the model created in the first place. So seeing the block out technique and how to remesh and sculpt solved a huge issue I've been having (basically I crash my computer repeatedly and give up lol) Im currently on your head sculpting video
I tried to use blender without a tutorial just to see how far I would get (No experience at all), and for a figure,4 hours total isnt bad! (It looked like a stick figure but who cares!) But then with the tutorial it took 2 hours! Thank you SO much for making this video! Its helped me a whole lot with the navigation, and other features blender has to offer. As a beginner this tutorial was really easy to follow! I'd recomend for any beginner who might want to start a little bit on the advanced side. I'll also make sure to share this video with some other people I know who want to get into 3d modeling!
You can also move the cubes in object mode and add an "empty" object and name it "world origin" and then when applying any mirror modifiers use it as the object to mirror from. Thus letting you use Local orientation when modeling which can be rather useful while still having mirrored objects. You can also very easily add any additional modifiers to the new cubes by quickly holding shift and clicking any object that has the modifiers you want to use in scene mode then pressing CTRL+L (for link) and copy modifiers. makes the whole process far less tedious.
for 3 weeks now I have been trying to learn to sculpt and until this tutorial of yours, I was not able to finish a complete body thank you so much man!
This series appeared in my recommendations at the perfect time as I have been wanting to learn how to sculpt for ages but didn't know where to look. I've greatly enjoyed following along so far with my own designs and can't wait to see the rest of it!
For anyone thats struggling with mirroring you have to right click on the object, ->set origin and select origin to 3D cursor. You have to make sure your character is at the center
ive been learning blender and i feel like im stuck in a stage where im not a beginner but i also dont know enough to be able to create my own stuff and its so difficult finding tutorials that help me out with this but yours is so perfect! im only five minutes in and havetn even opened blender yet but i know im going to love this :D
When I discovered your channel im so impressed how fast you improve in Blender. And when you say that drawing gets tiring i couldn't agree with you more. I've been burnt out with drawing lately and looking for something new to learn. Thanks for making tutorials man
i dont know how to thankyou enough for this series, i have bought courses and stuff, but you bridge the gap between beginner to mid very well! while explaining the things alot of pros over look. Tutorials like this, are massively important, more important than most. i greatly value your skill and explanations.
I started learning blender back in February and have watched a dozen tutorials and this is probably the best one. Love the steady pace of everything. It was easy to follow and I really learned a lot. Thanks! On to the next!
The best blender lessons I've ever watched. Algorithm needs to push this more so leaving a comment here. everyone needs show this person some love as well.
This is literally the best sculpt video i've ever seen, you make it look so easy, your workflow in other videos its good to not get stressed, before this i thought sculpting was hard, thank you!
i've started using blender almost 4months ago now so i like that i'm familiar with most of the shortcut here, and also got a good intro to blocking out stuff, cuz my current only male body mesh was done modeling it. btw if you are a total beginner, if you moved ANY item in object mode, please, just get back a few steps back, and enter edit mode before moving anything, i messed up so many project without knowing that this would cause issue with some modifiers. Either don't move items in object mode, if you did it though, look for how to apply scale and rotation, cuz further done the road, it may mess up your fun ! can't wait to see the rest of the tutorial, i wish it was a netflix series that drop from ep 1 to final the same day haha ! Thnx a lot for the content !
oh man, I had the same problem! I don't dare move things in object mode. I had thought about trying to get all of these recorded and edited before I uploaded anything, but I figured I had enough footage to get up to retopology so I'll just edit those and upload as I get them done since the videos up to retopo could stand on their own to make base meshes. Just trying to keep the content flowing.
Fun fact, you can just type in any units into the object dimensions and it'll automatically do the conversion for you. So you can just type in 5'5" and then hit enter and it'll leave the units in meters. And of course don't forget to apply transforms when youre manipulating these things in object mode.
Awesome tutorial, dude! Ironically enough, while I was starting a sculpt yesterday, I was rewatching some of your vids at 0.25x speed to get a closer look at your workflow at this stage! Keep up the good work, man! Your progress is inspiring!
im so excited to see the rest of this tutorial! i love your sculpts and ive been trying to study your workflow from your other vids and have switched to subdivided cubes for trying to sculpt (they are 100% a lot easier to deal with than uv spheres and so on) and its appreciated that you're making a full out tutorial now! thank you!
ty and yw! I know what you mean, I tried blocking out with spheres like some of the other guys and it never did click with me. These subdiv'd cubes were way easier for me to wrap my head around :P
I feel the exact same! Once i finished college, some stuff happened with my life and i lost a lot of my knowledge, do glad this is bringing it all back to me!
I really appreciate everything about this, it's really making sculpting click for me. And maybe it's weird to say, but I deeply appreciate the lack of wet mouth noises/swallowing/lip smacking that fills my soul with burning fury in so many other damn blender tutorials. Just really clean audio all around.
You single-handedly managed to unscrew my modelling skills simply by telling me how to move blocks. Gonna finish the series for all the tricks to get a finished model but even what I have is an insane upgrade from the lego looking things I have been making.
To be honest I was waiting for a character sculpting tutorial like this with your blocking method because it's really cool and simple and I like it Thanks Brian ;D
YW! I never could get any speed with some other blockout methods like where you take spheres and sculpt them into bodyparts. Just felt like I was eyeballing too much. I much rather move verts around in the beginning.
OMG thankkkk you so so much.. This is the best sculpting tutorial ever!! I've always watch all of your sculpting videos and learn so much from your workflow. Watch all of your workflow videos with 0.25 speed so i can get a closer look stuff you do. But finally you do this tutorial.. finally!!
God, I feel like a loser watching your progress. I've been playing with 3d for longer than I care to admit. And I've been messing with Blender for a few years now and I'm not even half as good as you are! But you've inspired me. Time to get busy!
Thank you Sir @@BranSculpts I finished my sculpt a week ago and Im not liking the face haha now im into the Retopology stage Hoping 1 day I can progress like you

Yo thanks!! I'm really excited for you that you're getting excited about making your own models!! haha Keep at it, keep learning, theres so much crazy shit you can do in this program!
how are you coming along with your modeling?
@@zuritary4075 Slowly but surely! I had to redo the retopo phase 3 times over (mostly because I'm using my own style and sculpt and because I had to adapt it and practice which is good!) Wish I could link a screen shot here but I did post some WIPS on my Bluesky (Viveltya on there too) if you're interested (last one is tagged adult because... well it's a nude model XD)
im so insanely grateful for this! ive been wanting to get into character modelling for so long and as a dude with an attention span shorter than himself, this is the only tutorial i can sit through
This process for building character models has been what I'm missing when it comes to modeling and work flow. This's already much more fun and enjoyable to work with than how I use to make character models. Fantastic tutorial to follow along with and build.
I'm off to part 2
Thank you! Keep enjoying it and I can't wait to see your finished work.
I'm glad I can help you out!
This is like the Doughnut of Character Modeling. I've learned so much doing this
This is by far the best, easiest to follow sculpting tutorial ive seen for Blender... Character sculpting has always seemed so daunting no matter how many tutorials I watch, but this was so easy to follow and understand.
I am INCREDIBLY grateful for this series, already watched parts 1-4 three times so far. Your workflow makes so much sense to me. Thank you so much!!
You're very welcome!
Beginner at blender. Only been practicing a couple of months and this tutorial so far has been by far the best 😁
This is the best version of how to use Blender that I have found yet
Months of struggling, solved in 30 minutes. Your an art saver ✨
Haha thanks! Glad it helped. May I ask what you've been getting hung up on?
@@BranSculpts the whole process really, mostly getting the model created in the first place. So seeing the block out technique and how to remesh and sculpt solved a huge issue I've been having (basically I crash my computer repeatedly and give up lol)
Im currently on your head sculpting video
@@crowinnards i know what u mean! Sculpting was so hard for me but its finally working out so far!
Glad I could help!
This series appeared in my recommendations at the perfect time as I have been wanting to learn how to sculpt for ages but didn't know where to look. I've greatly enjoyed following along so far with my own designs and can't wait to see the rest of it!
Awesome! Tag me so I can see what you come up with!
For anyone thats struggling with mirroring you have to right click on the object, ->set origin and select origin to 3D cursor. You have to make sure your character is at the center
I HAVE BEEN ALL OVER UA-cam AND REDDIT TO FIGURE THIS OUT IT HAS BEEN I KID YOU NOT 2 HOURS OF ME STRUGGLING THANK YOU YOUVE SAVED ME
@kirasgirlpower7534 I had to do some playing around to get it, there's another to mirror objects as well.
I'll have to look into it once I get home
Not all heroes wear capes 🙏
THANK YOU!!!!!
Thank you so much I've been trying to figure out why it's not doing what his doing love you some
ive been learning blender and i feel like im stuck in a stage where im not a beginner but i also dont know enough to be able to create my own stuff and its so difficult finding tutorials that help me out with this but yours is so perfect! im only five minutes in and havetn even opened blender yet but i know im going to love this :D
finally ... someone has made a video explaining exactly what I needed to know about modelling and sculpting.
Hope this helps you out.
finally, a tutorial from you with the whole process. thank you so much ❤❤
haha your welcome
My journey in becoming better at 3d continues here. Thanks for this man
When I discovered your channel im so impressed how fast you improve in Blender. And when you say that drawing gets tiring i couldn't agree with you more. I've been burnt out with drawing lately and looking for something new to learn. Thanks for making tutorials man
Thanks, and yw! I took like a year off of drawing and was looking for a new thing to fall in love with, and man, making 3d characters was it!
i dont know how to thankyou enough for this series, i have bought courses and stuff, but you bridge the gap between beginner to mid very well! while explaining the things alot of pros over look. Tutorials like this, are massively important, more important than most. i greatly value your skill and explanations.
Thanks so much! I'm glad it's helping and I really appreciate the kind words!😭
@@BranSculpts your welcome!!, do you have a discord i can drop my WIP in or is it okay to tagg you on insta and twitter?
I started learning blender back in February and have watched a dozen tutorials and this is probably the best one. Love the steady pace of everything. It was easy to follow and I really learned a lot. Thanks! On to the next!
The best blender lessons I've ever watched. Algorithm needs to push this more so leaving a comment here. everyone needs show this person some love as well.
Wow, thank you! I really appreciate that!
This is literally the best sculpt video i've ever seen, you make it look so easy, your workflow in other videos its good to not get stressed, before this i thought sculpting was hard, thank you!
Thank you! I always try to find the best workflow for me and hope that it helps others.
i've started using blender almost 4months ago now so i like that i'm familiar with most of the shortcut here, and also got a good intro to blocking out stuff, cuz my current only male body mesh was done modeling it.
btw if you are a total beginner, if you moved ANY item in object mode, please, just get back a few steps back, and enter edit mode before moving anything, i messed up so many project without knowing that this would cause issue with some modifiers.
@@BranSculpts can't wait to dive in the next chapters !
you could do Ctrl + a and apply scale and rotation
@@moonlightblue9196 indeed ✨👌
Fun fact, you can just type in any units into the object dimensions and it'll automatically do the conversion for you. So you can just type in 5'5" and then hit enter and it'll leave the units in meters.
And of course don't forget to apply transforms when youre manipulating these things in object mode.
Good to know. Thanks!
Another gem of a tutorial 🔥
Lovely!! this is the first blender character creation tutorial I can actually follow! 🤣❤
Wow, thank you!
I'm glad I did a coloso 3d course before coming back to the basics. Now I can understand most of everything after struggling the first time
Awesome tutorial, dude! Ironically enough, while I was starting a sculpt yesterday, I was rewatching some of your vids at 0.25x speed to get a closer look at your workflow at this stage! Keep up the good work, man! Your progress is inspiring!
Thanks, man! Glad it helps!!
OMG same
This tutorial it's pure GOLD✨✨✨✨
Just finished this part :-) For now it seems that the best blender character tutorial on YT for beginners :D
Beginner here. I have used a few character creation methods so far and this one is by far the most easy and clean way of making humans. Thanks!
im so excited to see the rest of this tutorial! i love your sculpts and ive been trying to study your workflow from your other vids and have switched to subdivided cubes for trying to sculpt (they are 100% a lot easier to deal with than uv spheres and so on) and its appreciated that you're making a full out tutorial now! thank you!
ty and yw! I know what you mean, I tried blocking out with spheres like some of the other guys and it never did click with me. These subdiv'd cubes were way easier for me to wrap my head around :P
I cant believe you learned all this in just 10 months! Thank you for sharing all of this. You are a god send
Honestly this is what I needed to get myself back into it, since I've been kind of out of the game for a while now.
Same, I tried to get back into it the other day in was flapper-gasted at doing what used to be so simple 😭
hell yeah! get back in there!
Yeeees! So excited for this video!
haha don't get too excite, It wasn't exactly the most energetic commentary XD
I went to college for 3D modeling and I learned more from this video alone then I ever did in college.
Its somewhat sad
Awesome thanks for this just starting my sculpting journey so timing for me is awesome. Loving your sculpts so happy to see your workflow.
Base mesh made waiting on next part. Great first video Bran
awesome! part 2 hopefully up tomorrow
Thanks so much! good luck!

Men are just cubes, women are just cubes, the whole world is just cubes. We're all living in some crusty 12-year-old's subdivided Minecraft world.
You single-handedly managed to unscrew my modelling skills simply by telling me how to move blocks. Gonna finish the series for all the tricks to get a finished model but even what I have is an insane upgrade from the lego looking things I have been making.
I've had so much fun so far doing this sculpt!
Awesome! To me, blocking out usually is the most fun part of the whole process.
I've never made anything in Blender in my life. But now I'm making a 3d model of an oc?? This is an incredibly good tutorial, and somehow really easy!
Thank you! I'm love hearing when you all make progress on being creative!
To be honest I was waiting for a character sculpting tutorial like this with your blocking method because it's really cool and simple and I like it
Thanks Brian ;D
YW! I never could get any speed with some other blockout methods like where you take spheres and sculpt them into bodyparts. Just felt like I was eyeballing too much. I much rather move verts around in the beginning.
@@BranSculpts I Agree
OMG thankkkk you so so much.. This is the best sculpting tutorial ever!! I've always watch all of your sculpting videos and learn so much from your workflow. Watch all of your workflow videos with 0.25 speed so i can get a closer look stuff you do. But finally you do this tutorial.. finally!!
Haha ty Glad I could help!
God, I feel like a loser watching your progress. I've been playing with 3d for longer than I care to admit. And I've been messing with Blender for a few years now and I'm not even half as good as you are! But you've inspired me. Time to get busy!
Never give up!
I really like this method of sculpting the body. Way easier than trying to pull the leg out in sculpt mode.
It really is!
amazing tutorial cant wait till part 2
ty! it'll be up in the morning hopefully
I dont know what to love more, the tutorial or his accent
I made it through the blockout! let see if I can make it to the Sculpting 🙂
Thank you for this series!
You got this!
Thank you Sir @@BranSculpts

Finally, I was looking for a good tutorial on how to create a 3d model and how to use the tools
Literally such an awesom vid!! this is my first (ish) time using blender (i got halfway through the donut) and bc of this i was able to make an actually pretty good looking model so far! i feel like i've learnt so much about the software! i only have my character's tail to block out but now i feel confident enough to try it myself :3
i cant wait to start sculpting!
u know a tutorial is good when it looks easy and simple to follow... the result looks already much better than anything i could ever achieve haha, i will keep working on it. Thx!
I try to make it as simple as possible because Blender can be overwhelming for people to use.
Amazing tutorial ❤️🔥 I learned so much watching the video! I'll have to use this workflow for future block-outs seeing everything as basic shapes helped me understand the shapes better and how they all connect I look forward to watching your next tutorial
👍👍👍
Omg I've been looking for days for a tutorial like this, this is such a good video, great pace, clear explanations and you cover everything a beginner needs to know, content like this is what makes youtube/blender so amazing, thank you so very much!

Thank you! I'm happy they came in handy for you.
hey, at 3:56 when i uncheck optimal display, nothing changes. the potential vertices aren’t showing up, it just stays as the 8 vertices from before.
i’ve selected the cube, and made 3 levels of subdivision, turned on x-ray and wireframe so im not sure what im doing wrong…
i’m brand new to blender and only started 3 days ago so im not really sure what im doing in general LMAO, but im just gonna restart and redo the tutorial up to this point again to see if it works this time!! but also if anyone knows why it’s not working pls lmk, ty😽!!!!
Hi! On the top of the subdivision modifier, is "on cage" turned on or off? It looks like 🔽.
@@BranSculpts it’s turned off
@@BranSculpts also in preferences, i was told to turn off GPU subdivision because my blender would always freeze and crash if i added a subdivision surface modifier.
ever since i turned it off, my blender stopped crashing. i’m not sure what the GPU subdivision does, but does it have anything to do with this?
@@k1utz Im having the same problem too, When I uncheck the Optimal Display nothing changes (Im in wire frame veiw too) but when I go Object Mode then it looks like what it was supposed too so I think it might be a bug. huge thanks for all your tutorials- again!

Love how you work sir, think you could make a character modeling series for animation. It's just Darin Lyle is the only video out there with a big break down and well its a really old vid and well it'd be nice to finally see a new video for people learning character modeling
I've tried veeeery little animation, and even that was some brute force stuff. I'm planning on taking some courses this summer tho. Maybe by this time next year I might be ok at it XD
thank you so much ive been watching and just slowing down ur previous ones to learn but this is perfect.
Thanks, I'm enjoying this slower-paced type of video. Feels pretty chill
