In this video, I try 2 different methods to create an inlay on a cutting board, in the first half of the video I use Total Boat resin poured to the cnc cavity.
In the second half I do a traditional inlay with a piece of walnut into a piece of countertop that I bought at Home Depot. This a tried and proven technique using Vectric V-Carve software check out this video for more information • The VCarve Inlay Techn...
For me, the learning was about the inlay and not so much about the cutting boards, which is why I went out and bought a few different cutting boards to experiment with.

The author does like to ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.
One of the most capable makers in the game and he buys a cutting board instead of making it himself, I love it. Sparking conversation while focusing on the real point of the video at the same time, those awesome inlays. Thanks for sharing techniques I've never seen nor thought of. You rule Jimmy 🤘🏼
Maybe we've found the one thing Jimmy can't make: cutting boards 😂
If the quality is good and you know you can make it yourself there isn't a lot of reason to make it yourself. You can't compete with those ~20 bucks.
Time savings. Plus there's nothing wrong with modding off-the-shelf items to fit your needs and demonstrating the process.
Probably cheaper to just buy the cutting boards
Always amazed at how much detail you can get from this inlay method, and always super cool to see the final reveal. Thanks for sharing!
It's fun watching the progress on IG then see the whole thing strung together. This was a great project and some interesting problem solving techniques! Nice job, Jimmy!👍👍
I've done a lot of epoxy inlays but was always intimidated by the wood inlays. I never thought of using the Japanese pull saw. 🔥
Thanks for the inspiration Jimmy to try and do an inlay on my CNC! I can’t wait to try this, I’ve been thinking about doing one for a while.
They look good. The drum sander came in handy for sure. Might have to try this on my little CNC.
I learn something everytime I watch your channel.
I'm still a bit afraid of tackling inlays on my cnc, seeing you do it is a great motivation to finally get to it! Thanks for the little kick in the rear! 😁
Forth! And fear no inlays!
Use easel pro from inventables, it has inlays built right into the program. Does the work for you!
I love the way you improvise methods. The glue on painter's tape is a great example. Always the innovator. I love that you gave those boards some soul! :D
Very cool! It is so interesting that the cutting path is different from boot print to boot print, even though they are the same design. CNC “robots” are amazing. Great video as always!
Nice! I've been making resin inlay coasters using a little laser to do the cuts. I rip the boards down quite thin, laser cut one all the way through, then glue them back together and I have a nice clean outline for the resin.
That's awesome Jimmy. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep Making. God bless.
Keep on trucking! Good work once again Jimmy and thank you.
I loved this effect when you made the guiness table, it still looks really nice 👌👌👌👌
Those wooden inlays look really awesome! The technique for doing that looked so difficult to get exactly right though!
You know life is good when you get a Diresta video on your birthday!
Well....Happy Birthday! I hope the day goes and ends as well as it started!
@@jasonkarels6202 thank you kindly!
Great film. Ton of work showing two methods. That desktop Shopbot looks pretty versatile. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Great project - thanks for posting, and thumbs up.
every time starts with a "w t f is he doing???" and every time ends with "w t f he did!!!" Excellent! :D
I enjoy your videos. I like watching your mind work.
Very Cool Jimmy; such a clever Technique on the Large Board.
Amazing, Jimmy! Fantastic work! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I would not have expected any less, great use of materials🤗😎🤗😎
A cutting board with footprints on it, yum. Makers make the darndest things.
I was so hoping for a surprise burrito at the end... 🤣Loved seeing the contrasting styles on the larger piece! All I was thinking was how sore my arms would be after all that planing...
Love it! I used one of those wooden Husky toolbox tops to make my 3 year old his first workbench, they are great.
I was surprised you didn't use the CNC to remove the extra material from the inlay. There's definitely more than one way to do things ;)
I ROFL when Jimmy started 'teabagging' his bandsaw
Great learning experience. I'll take one of the smaller boards 😉
I’ve given this some thought… The only reason Jimmy is cleaning up this walnut inlay, chip by chip, with a tiny handplane, and not just slapping this bad boy in the planer, is well… Because he’s really enjoying it 😊
Brilliant work again Jimmy. Loved the solution with the second board. Looks like it took some work too!!
Nice love the idea of boot prints
Good job Jimmy well done
What a neat idea!
I get some of these from stores and do laser engraving on them. It’s sad when a woodworker can buy completed board cheaper than wood to make one now a days. Love the carolina footprint
Grande Jimmy un abbraccio dall'Italia 🇮🇹♥️🇺🇲
That's some hand plane work Jimmy. 🦾
Carolina has such an awesome logo! Hope you dry fitted that glue up, Jimmy!
The inlay worked crazy good!
I look at cutting boards and think project lumber 😂
I've used those Husky wood toolbox tops for a lot of different things. Except perhaps an actual toolbox top.
Thanks Jimmy 👍 👍👍
WOW! simply WOW!
wow that was great. thanks
Love it!
Love these! If you had to do it again Jimmy, would you use the saw to remove the excess or the plane? Seems that both were a lot of work, just curious which you would prefer.
Ingenious.
Beautiful 👏👏👏
Pretty neat what can be done with a CNC.
Well done bro:-)!
Ok that's badass! 👌
Thank you !
Very interesting!
Yet another awesome video from "the hack". Better make that Johnson's Paste Wax last. Not sure if you are aware but they stopped making it and its like 90 bucks a can on ebay!
LOL intresting image choice for the inlay! Sponsor, I assume. I'd like to get a cnc to try some inlays as well. Well done.
We’ll use the plane and pull saw instead of the carbide cutter because I’m the BOSS!
Topperson!
Totalmente impossível, aqui no Brasil, um trabalhador chegar a ter tantas ferramentas.
Awesome, big foot!!
Great inlays :) Maybe use the CNC next time with a flattening bit to make the flattening a bit faster then with a pullsaw and handplainer
So cool
This is hilarious 😂 Nice work as always Jimmy 🙌
I was waiting to see Jimmy modify the pull saw blade to fit into a sawzall...
Great job I am going to have to put a couple together for my kids, where did you find the giant utility knife blade?
That would have been great to send to Bobby Flay back in the day. When he won the first Iron Chef (against the Japanese chefs) he jumped up on the counter. The Japanese were upset and it was this whole controversy.
“Didn’t even make your own hummus” - Troll voice
Next video - Jimmy will strap the two chopping boards with over size Carolinas to his feet and create some local sasquatch news 😉
Enjoy your meal 😋
really good idea. I don't think the epoxy is food safe. or did you use special epoxy resin?
Exactly my first thought... there should be some info or discussion about food safe resin.
Cool.
so damn cool!!
Muito criativo
Love the project, assuming the products are food safe....
If I saw Jimmy Diresta buying cheap bamboo cutting boards from Walmart, I think I'd have a heart attack.
Not sure if epoxy is a good idea for a cutting board though. Not really safe to eat if it chips.
Also try a heat gun for hard to take off stickers. These didn't look hard because they probably were nice and intended them to come off but other ones are a pain.
do more videos Jimmy ....
Beautiful work! But can these be used to chop a burrito in half?
Anyone know what software he was using?
👍👍👍👍👍
Not the most sanitary association I wanna make, a footprint on my cutting board, but it is original.
The wooden inlays; Ooooohhhh!
🎉
Now that’s something not the norm! Have a like.
Очень оригинально!!!
Just asking for a friend, are total boat epoxy and titebond fast set glue food safe?
Brasil 🇧🇷
Where did you get my boot prints? 🙂
Все отлично, но не пойму одного, зачем строгать в ручную, когда можно отфрезеровать на чпу станке ?
Do you have a rough total build time for the first cutting boards?
Are the screws in the spoil board during cutting just an abundance of caution? Seems like the superglue alone would have held a lot more than what you gave it.
Yep. Didn’t want to lose the cut 😊
Whoa look at those footsteps! Bigfoot!
First variant much more reasonable.
Couldn't you take that down with a thickness planer?
Ahhhhh Jimmy ,cut the burrito
Did you use the tread from your boots for the pattern?
Give ´em the Boots, the Roots, the Radicals!
Honestly, I'm shocked you didn't make the sole insert say "Diresta"!!
im curious why you didnt use the cnc to flatten the second board and choose to use the saw and a plane?
Because I was afraid I was gonna mess the whole thing up I didn’t wanna risk it
Love this technique. Too bad that Walnut was $7,000 for that one board.
There's something about the juxtaposition of footprints on a food prep surface that just ain't right
The irony ….. the tension.
The hypocrisy. The concept 🙌🏼
