Free to play mobile gaming is cancer. It had such potential, but now it’s just a place where the fun act of gaming is distorted solely to turn a profit. There’s minimal love put into the games, so it’s akin to sports games. Most of the games are out to take advantage of their customers.

To be fair pc/console gaming isn't far behind. Online subscriptions, lootboxes, season passes and most things today are either dork souls or a multiplayer shooter with the occasional witcher 3 bootleg that sometimes ruin a previously established series for no other reason than to sell you exp boosters or lootboxes.

I have a theory. One time I saw a spike in youtubers doing a "joke" sponsorship of raid, where they start to say it, then show a pic, then cut to something different, it's edgy.
But I think Raid's publisher actually paid for those little "joke" mentions. there was like 6 of these Raid "joke" sponsorships in a week. they were all blatantly obvious, and the same format.

That's certainly a theory, but it's also possible that the channel you were watching were trying to make an edgy joke but aren't very funny.
Could honestly just be that people are uncreative and all the negative buzz with people STILL discussing the game in high volume does still create plenty of free publicity next to already paid off youtubers and commercials on youtube.

I’ve got to say they hook you when you get a epic or legendary champion within the 1st 30 mins of gameplay. After that you invest time and energy into understanding the game. You spend some time completing tasks and fight in PvE so you can improve you hero. So you can get better at PvP. After awhile of playing and getting decent rare and epic champions always failing to get another legendary. You then realize it’s just gambling but some continue on since they’re already too invested in it already. The others might leave, like myself.
TL;DR the game is addictive and you soon realize on your own that’s its glorified gambling game.

There’s a lot of rules around of the world about payments made by kids, and legal need for the money to be refunded if parents press for it. That’s usually effective for mobile purchases too, like games like this. It’s usually still targeting adults who are easily addicted to gambling and such. Usually if a kid spends money on a game like this, the parents notice quickly and get the money back. But many adults have bankrupt themselves spending money on free games that implicitly demand it.

As someone who played the game for around 7 months and spent around $100 during that time, I would say you're absolutely correct on everything you've brought up. I don't harbor any grudge against the game, but while it is playable with little to no monetary investment, it's very clear that the game is meant to attract and engage gamblers first and foremost. The way the developers resisted adding any kind of stable forms of rewards or progression made this very clear. The people at the top of the corporate ladder can only be described as the scum of the Earth, and a pox on humanity. Thanks for making the video, I always thought that gaming UA-camrs would be interested in the subject.

here's the thing: I'm actually super okay with casino style/gambling games, so long as they are adequately regulated and are required to disclose the nature of their business.
If I want to waste my hard earned money on a shitty game, that's my right as a gamer, but it's also my right as a citizen to know which games are virtual casinos and which aren't.

Yes, but children are not capable of making that decision, which is who these games are aimed at. These games need to be restricted to adults only, regardless of content. If the game has microtransactions, it needs to be regulated, simple as that.
Not being able to cash out is literally saying “we’ll exploit children and take all of their money without them ever getting anything tangible in return.” What they get for their money? A digital item or “reward” that has no value and costs the casino company nothing to give out.

what if you had a casino room in your house, their ads would be on tv or on your phone/tablet/computer. they wouldn't directly try to pull you in. They just exist in your house. Seeing the name "aristocrat" honestly triggers me. I live and work in NV, and for a very short time, I worked for a chain of slot machine casinos (where aristocrat is a major player). Slot machines, by the way, are the number one source of gambling revenue for the state, and it isn't close.
To give credit where it's due, I signed I and my family up for healthcare benefits on day one, so that was nice, and I need to mention it, but *nothing* else about the job was good. I didn't make enough money to pay the bills, it was so, so very bad. And that's not a millennial snowflake way of describing it like "I don't have enough money for avocado toast and $25 acai bowls for breakfast", but an actual "these paychecks are not large enough to pay the bills we have".
I appreciate you telling your story, it really drives the point home.
I do however have one complaint, that being your example about not being paid enough.
Some millennials most certainly do pay $25 for avocado toast but the majority can not afford to do so. America has a serious payment in relation to costs issue. Chances are that most millennials will not be able to retire at a reasonable age, which is kind of a big fucking issue.

I'm so blown away by the richness of the information in this video. I actually didn't know Aristocrat acquired Plarium. No wonder it had one of the most stable and promising growths pre the 2020 crisis. When I first saw its name on ASX, I was asking how come an Aussie casino company gets such a growth in recent years. That combination of mobile gaming and gambling is just utter brilliance. I'm wordless.
It makes me sad as a developer myself: I have lots of cool ideas for genuinely interesting and fun games that use the nature of mobile to become more fun and interesting than if they were on pc/console. But I *know* no matter how good I make such a game, the name has been tainted so heavily it *cannot* do well. I know because Ive found a handful of actually good games on mobile stores (note, like, 0.000001% of games available, but the point is they DO exist) and theyre never talked about, never shared, never played.
It's a damn shame. The market in *theory* could breed all kinds of creative new games, whole new genres. But no, we just get zynga reincarnated over and over and over again. And that's a damn shame.
Just putting this out here, the Witch Spring series is a hidden gem. Granted, they're paid apps, but the price is more than worth it in my opinion. Nothing revolutionary, but it's a good 10-20 hours of good playtime and story for each game as long as you're willing to shell out a few bucks.

Tl'dr: Underrated anime beat em up with surprisingly humongus content. No pay to win.
It's a great beat em up by mihoyo which really improved over the years. Even with a gacha aspect, this game showers you with rewards and crystals for said gacha are farmable. Even without this you can enjoy a pretty neat story with great animated cutscenes sprinkled in between and even bits of other kinds of gameplay like jump n run, top down shooter(depends on Event but exists regardless) and simple open world mechanics.

Years ago I just completely gave up on the market. As you said, the sky was the limit... apps were new, fun, and exciting! But then the store just filled up with so much shit. Clash of Clans? Have you ever played that? Jesus CHRIST it's HORRIBLE! Not even the monetization part... it's just an all around bad game. And the store was just filled with rip offs of the few games that did get popular, which in turn were likely overly monetized shit as well.
So even if a truly great game comes out on mobile... I'm not going to be watching. And even if told this was "for reals, a good game on mobile!" I'd still be highly skeptical. I'm more likely to trust old flash games from newgrounds than anything mobile.
If you've ever played a single of Plarium's other games, it's really easy to discern the game's corrupt nature. Plarium is notorious for the mechanics used in Raid, they were one of the very earliest pioneers in the field of the city-building "Wait or Pay" game style that is now so popular - most notably, Travian. When I say earliest, I'm talking early-mid 2000s, like you could see the crust on the jpg that was your "city" with a web interface overlay for the building buttons.

Yeah, tried Lucid Adventure, grinded hard to become #1 clan, within a week i was lvl 33, others? 44 to 70+, how? Shit ton of items you can only get by buying, also If someone in your clan is higher level than the leader they can steal and get the position themselves, this game lets you lose all the things you worked for, for what? The people who pay to win theyre way yo become the best. At the start it hat 4.6 rating, a month in it had 3.4 on it, i wonder why so many left it?
The only good thing about Raid is the live-action/CGI commercials in the office. I like those commercials. Other than that, I'm not touching them with a ten foot barge pole.

@fenrif almost impossible on mobile. They've made youtube.com so much less usable than their app, disabled the ability for 3rd party (adless) apps to function, and spam ads more than on PC or console versions of youtube.

It still works on websites, but it does not work on stand-alone apps. You're still just basically playing a browser version of the video, not the actual data that allows an app developer to alter how ads work. Is it totally impossible to get around that? Probably not. Is it now extremely difficult and costly to develop an app that can do that, making it functionally impossible?

I don't like how the browser version of mobile videos works, and they used to allow that specific development. You can get adless youtube videos through firefox mobile. Doesn't change that google is deliberately hindering something they used to allow.
If it didn't make any difference, why'd they change the api in 2018 to prevent it?
The bots running ads and recommendations really need some Natural Language Processing, but the extra programming and hardware that would take cost too much.

Something more interesting that I think people need to take into account is the method by which mobile gaming goes about its advertisements is very akin to early advertisement on the Internet circa 2000 to 2008.
For some of the younger zoomer people this was the era of Congratulations, You Won - Back before the Internet got sterilized and cleaned up by corporations, we were always taught to avoid clicking on suspicious links, and advertisers of the day usually went out of their way to be as invasive as possible. They used to take the form of popups that could not be exited without opening task manager. Often, they would incorporate impossible to stop sound, long before "tabs" showed you where the noise was coming from. In addition, this was the era of "Shocksites" - it was not uncommon for people to disguise links to things like 2 Girls 1 Cup or Pain Olympics in e-greeting cards and emails.
For people like me who spent their adolescence pirating music during this time with things like Limewire, I would like to stress that file sharing in this era was like having unprotected sex with a South Bronx hooker - There was a not insignificant chance that your computer could get something extremely deadly to the point of it getting bricked. (Or good god forbid, something illegal like Cheese Pizza) But It's not just the mobile gaming ads of today - the hostility carried over across generations, for Millenial to Z - advertisements in general that are treated with extreme suspicion because the last 20 years before the Internet got cleaned up was very much a wash with cold war style paranoia that any missed click could body your machine. Personal experience; I got an ad once while doing research on my mom's computer for a school project, (No, it honestly WASN'T porn, I had my own computer for that) and, on my way to shut it off, my new kitten walked over my hand, making me click the thing. WHAM. Boot sector virus.
Unless you do extensive jailbreaking on a mobile device you're not going to be able to get the level of ad blocking potential that your desktop or laptop will by merely installing an extension on your browser. This is why the mobile market is so bad, because there is no effective way to stop the flow of advertisement. Yet it goes far deeper than that considering how openly fraudulent the mobile market actually is. Remember when people used to make memes about mafia city? All jokes aside who here knows that they openly and blatantly stole Sam Fisher's model from splinter cell? Why have to this day they not gotten in legal trouble with Ubisoft about it?
In addition to the games just being terrible and the advertisement being fraudulent you must understand that the 3rd issue at play is a 20 year culture of being extremely suspicious about ads and more importantly having to actively fight against them.
We hated ads for how aggressive and destructive they were THEN, and they ask us why TO THIS DAY we don't trust them?

Yea, talk of the early 2000s bring back nostalgia. Limewire, along with eMule and Kazaa were really the wild west of the internet back in the day. You could be downloading anything, and sometimes you found some interesting things, and other times you got an unwelcome gift.. That kind of alertness and skepticism about everything on the internet still largely exists today. Albeit the younger generation is much more susceptible to scams and such because of their lack of experience and largely naive outlook.

Thank you for the enlightening research. I was researching this topic for a while now, but saw things I didn't know at all. I always make it a thing to bring attention to RAID and games like it in the comments of popular youtubers that become sponsored by them. I figured out Polaris out to the point of finding out they were owned by Aristocrat, but and that it would lead to unregulated gambling with no payout to the consumer. If UA-cam didn't keep trying to screw over it's independent creators with its passive-aggressive model of "maybe I like you, maybe I'll destroy you" while trying to cozy up to old entertainment giants, I might agree with you. However, the small, independent content creator on UA-cam has gotta eat. Either they have a main job and do this on the side, or they go UA-cam full-time, and thus have to deal with YT's BS just so they can make a living. Besides, Raid is a meme by this point, so toss a coin to your local UA-camr by simply putting up with their ads.

I think it’s just in general a lot of Israelis are smart. This means their good and their bad are smart. They’ve made some crazy scientific advances. It could just be Judaism. Back during the Black Plague jews were murdered for “witchcraft” because they weren’t also dying in droves. Their beliefs put a lot of emphasis on cleanliness and hundreds of years later we can say the reason they weren’t dying in droves is because they were more sanitary than everyone else. Gambling is even looked down upon in judaism, with compulsive gamblers being accused of harming family and forgetting God.
