Not just the vocalist, guitarist and the drummer have got some great skills. The way they make the mood of these track. if I get to travel back in time, Joy Division show would be something in my bucket list
Something about this kills me. They be rocking out, yet mostly I sense desperation. But for all I know Ian had a rocking good time at the show :) . And god bless the rest of the band, as well.
When I listen to this and other clips, I have a feeling that diamonds are scattered everywhere around me and I don't know I simply don't know which one to pick and look at it closely and admire it
raw and powerful live performance of my favourite Joy Division Track. 35 years on pretty much to the day since Ian's suicide (rip) How the years pass. We all have to answer that question eventually "what you gonna do when the Novelty's over"
I like all of the live show recordings a lot more than the studio ones, you can really feel the energy and emotion the band expounded rather than the "perfect" sound from the albums that doesn't have the same feeling.
@@derin111 You were obviously a "bit of a fan" (lol) Do you catch them on the "white riot tour" (May 77) .The most exciting gig I have ever been to. I can still them remember the sheer visceral attack of "Janie Jones" , and singling along to the chorus of "I'M so bored with the USA". Didn't much care for the second Clash album . But London Calling was a return to form. Where did you see JD ? I saw them in early 1980 at the ULU London. I saw Purssence 12 times, REM 9 times , Wall of Voodoo 8 times. There is still great music around , but for sheer visceral excitement I was glad that I was part of the "Punk New Wave " music explosion (1976/80) . Things started to go downhill after 1980 because of the New Romantics. and Goth. Don't get me wrong I liked bands like Sisters of Mercy , but things were not as good in the early/mid 80's as they had been between 1976/80
@@keithbate9405 Ha! I was still (by about a year) too young to the Clash in 1977. The first times were in 1978 when I was 15. That was in Purley supported by the Slits and then again at the Victoria Park gig. Yes, the first Clash album is still my favourite right from the opening whack of 'Janie Jones'! You won't believe it by I also was at that same JD ULU gig as you! I was still actually only 16 (a month before my 17th) and my school friend and I shouldn't have got in! But, there was so much confusion on the steps outside the Student Union that night that we managed to get in! I think overall that was the single best gig my friend and I went to...and we used to go to loads nearly every weekend. It wasn't until just a few years ago the bonus live CD that you can get with Closer is actually a recording of that gig!
@@derin111 Amazing coincidence ! I presume you did not have a ticket either and got in for free ! I n those days I never bought advance tickets unless it was a super group like Led Zeppelin or the Rolling stones . Other wise I paid on the door. Any way I got there . People were hanging about at the bottom of the steps. . Some sitting on the steps. I just walked up the steps expecting some one at the top to ask for my money or a ticket. No one did so I just walked in to the hall without paying ! assume you did the same . As you say there was total confusion outside. That gig was one of the band's last ever gigs. Later they played near where I live at Bham Uni . I tried to get in to this gig without a ticket but failed . The Slits were part of the White riot tour. JD are in my all time top 10 bands and that gig is in my all time top ten ever. I think Peter Hook wrote Novelty if I remember. It is my fav ever JD track . I have the 12" of Transmission and it is on the B side. It wasn't released on the Two studio albums. Amazing that I see teenagers walking around now with JD T shirts .
The photo with the baby. She didn t knew his father, he died when she has just one litlle year. Poor daughter, poor Ian. Poor man. He stirs our emotions, no doubt, beacuse he didn t lack of tenderness in his madness, a ray of sun. Love Ian
His voice sound completely different than the sudio version in my opinion. It's a higher key. Sound great still, but make me wonder if there was not any sound effect to make his voice lower than his true voice in the studio version.
just brilliant what the fuck happened to music come on hooky we need more of the light your r only hope u fucker stop watching man u and get on tour oh and please come to Hereford haha all gob aside cheers u fucking iconsx
When the people listen to you, don't you know it means a lot? Because you've got to work so hard for everything you've got Can't rest on your laurels now - not when you've got none You'll find yourself in the gutter, right back where you came from Someone told me being in the know is the main thing We all need the security that belonging brings Can't stand on your own in these times against all the odds You all just fall behind like all the other sods You slap our backs and pretend you knew about All the things that we were gonna do What you're gonna do? What you're gonna do when it's over You're all on your own now - don't you think that it's a shame But you're the only one responsible to take the blame So what you're gonna do when the novelty is gone? Yeah, what you're gonna do when the novelty is gone? You slap our backs and pretend you knew about All the things that we were gonna do What you're gonna do? What you're gonna do when it's over?
i was poking fun....who doesnt know who ian is when they listen to a JD song, but ya both versions are great..i like the live better cuz im more into hard punk
"New Wave New wave" when the energy of punk was retained but the music was more sophisticated eg "on the roof" The Adverts "a song from under the floor boards" by Magazine
I envy every single person that was there that night. EVERY SINGLE ONE.
Pure class
Fuckin dead right fella
How right you are. I share your feelings, completely.

Yes to all
they DID MAKE HISTORY
Hilarious. "could"? wtf HAVE! DID!
Absolute best version of Novelty ever performed.
“What you gonna do when it’s over?”
Unbelievable track
Damn, the chaotic intensity of this live version is blowing my mind.
Not just the vocalist, guitarist and the drummer have got some great skills. The way they make the mood of these track. if I get to travel back in time, Joy Division show would be something in my bucket list
Joy Division is probably the most beautifull thing of the universe!
Gospel truth
Some say he is still waiting for them to play No love lost
I know I am!
Vrdd
I love how we can feel the anger in his voice during the chorus
Fuck, this is insanely good! Bernard Sumner is on fire here!
JOY DIVISION IS MY ADDICTION !!!
Something about this kills me. They be rocking out, yet mostly I sense desperation. But for all I know Ian had a rocking good time at the show :) . And god bless the rest of the band, as well.
So much energy!
It just blows me away every time.
I think Bernard has played this with his capo on first fret, so a half-step higher than the original.
My favourite Joy Division song!
i'm pretty sure its only the tape being damaged (or a shitty tape recorder to begin with)
most of Joy Division's lives were recorded a semitone higher
hes questioning the end of punk... pure class... mac and salford x.. true poineersx
NO LOVE LOST! WARSAW! LEADERS OF MEN! LOUIE LOUIEEEEEE!
So there are THREE versions now!? Wow! I love them all!
The intensity of this song is so intense and immense! Love it!❤️
Awesome , those driving drums
Happy Anniversary Ian!
Joy division Forever!
suicide is painless
When I listen to this and other clips, I have a feeling that diamonds are scattered everywhere around me and I don't know I simply don't know which one to pick and look at it closely and admire it
Sounds so ferocious and intense, it's fckin genius!
Don't get anything like this nowadays.

How the years pass.
We all have to answer that question eventually
"what you gonna do when the Novelty's over"
Sit in my yard with a gun and 18 years old baby and have a good time with the universe, you know
It is awesome... and Ian sings the wrong lyrics through the second half of the song!!!!
@@sablebasilisk7998 the lyrics don't really matter except
"what are you gonna do what the novelty is over" ?
Happy birthday Ian . You stay killer punk, man. Joy Division forever. 3
I wish I could have seen Ian live!!!! :(
Wow! What a intensity! Nothing more after this!
Wow this is awesome live!
Simply amazing! So much energy!

Louis Louis!
I always come back to this video just to hear that guy yelling “NO LOVE LOST”
I just broke my chair..... That is a first. I have never broke shit rocking out at a PC before.
Joy division fabuleux les inventeurs de la Cold wave
WOW! So intense! Steven and Ian especially!
What's that second verse? It definitely isn't "someone told me being in the know is the main thing..."
Its amazing
You can by this lovely track off of the Unknown Pleasures Collectors Edition. Thanks for posting this by the way!
Fantastic song.
Maan this Version is so exciting I LOVE IT
What a powerful rendition!!
you can get it off the Heart and Soul disc set (CD4)
thanks for the comment :)
This could be said to be the most "Warsaw" sounding songs by Joy Division.
perfect.
NO LOVE LOST
WARSAW
LEADERS OF MEN
"Stand in the mirror now with everything you see"
The most exciting band I ever saw live!
in my top three with the Clash (May 77 white riot tour), and Wall of Voodoo (1986 International Club Manchester )

Yeah, what you're gonna do when the novelty is gone?
You slap our backs and pretend you knew about
All the things that we were gonna do
What you're gonna do?
What you're gonna do when it's over?
These aren't the lyrics to this performance.

Barney still trying to steal the limelight
I have always wondered: who sings the part at 2:55 on the original record? To me it doesn't sound like Ian... Maybe Bernard? Or Hook?
It's Ian
It’s Ian
It’s Ian
An OMG!!! Moment
I wandered that same thing. Is it Ian the one who introduced the song?
