Goddamn crime considering all the money Factory Records pissed away that a high quality video of Joy Division live never came to be. This is like watching early 60s space footage.
True, although to be fair, Factory only really had money to squander at least 5 to 6 years after Joy Division. At the time that JD were their main band on the label, they didn’t really have much money at all.
JD sounded better like this, in my humble opinion. Raw and real. I personally hate the production on the albums, although I realize it has become the JD sound.
This is it. The greatest thing Joy Division ever did. The peak. Unreal. Pure emotion. When the vocal hits. Nothing else like it before or since. The synth. The guitar. The bass. The drums. The vocal hitting. Nothing else.
i think it's one of the best and most intense JD songs, ever... either you get it, or you don't. they were WAY ahead of their time... wow. gracias por subirlo!
WOOW como me impresiona esta Banda! demasiado adelantados para su epoca!,para mi son uno los padres del rock alternativo, apenas puedo creer que esto haya sido grabado en los 70's! descanse en paz IAN CURTIS
Joy Division are one of the giants of my youth, and they will accompany me for the rest of my life for certain. This live version is so amazing touching onto industrial, it's pure genius. I recommend to play it loud as possible.
like @billiam4 said they were practically just kids. they were'nt music experts by a long shot. gradually they managed to communicate their meaning and understanding through music and this became more dynamic and creative than any of them could have imagined. also if you haven't already i recommend listening to the bournemouth winter gardens live version. real mindblowing.
Bought the Here are the Young Men VHS in 1997…out of all of the songs, this song is far and away the best live on the whole recording for me …superb!! Still have the VHS somewhere, though now don’t have VHS player…
One of the very few times Ian played guitar and is yet another 'What might have been?' if the band had survived, as you could see Barney moving more towards keyboards and Ian to the guitar.
@HazeFerRillz The studio version of this song doesn't take this much time to build up and "begin". If it was another song you're referring to, it's probably Dead Souls.
The day when Buddy Holly and the other three blokes died in a plane crash was the day when Music died and the day when Ian Curtis died was the Day When Honesty In Music Died.
@Billiam4 I don't think my headphones will ever be loud enough lol! It's just amazing how something so powerful was made by a group of lads in their early 20's!? They were kids! It just gives me hope that I can do something like this but take it to the next level.
This tracks great way better than the rather lame album version, I'm sure not many people knew Ian was such a great Guitarist, So that makes Singer, Song writer and lyricist a complete performer.
Well, Ian cashed in his chips just before they were supposed to play Tuts in Chcago, and I used to regret the cancellation, but now that I've seen this video, I REALLY fucking regret it! Beyond this world ...

pyrtwist and just as important

THE REAL DEAL.
Yes, exactly. This is intense as it gets.
One one the darkest performance I have ever seen.
Just try to imagine how Joy Division could change the music if they existed since today...
Joy Division are the MAESTROS of intense, dark, powerful, soul piercing music!!!
Haunting & chilling as HELL!!!
i think it's one of the best and most intense JD songs, ever... either you get it, or you don't. they were WAY ahead of their time... wow.
gracias por subirlo!
Magnificent. If I could travel back in time, would I try to convince Ian Curtis to live on?
WOOW como me impresiona esta Banda! demasiado adelantados para su epoca!,para mi son uno los padres del rock alternativo, apenas puedo creer que esto haya sido grabado en los 70's! descanse en paz IAN CURTIS
This song sure sounds even more depressive and sinister live.

If it wasn't for Martin Hannett's mastery in electronic sound effects Barney wouldn't know what to do at that time with that sound board!

From "Here Are The Young Men" I have this on VHS! Absolutely Incredible stuff!
Me in my own world, and you there beside....
i'm 45 years old so i could never see Joy Division and Warsaw not either because i love this band and so particulary this song :thanx for post
It's more like a Doom Metal concert, not a Post-Punk.
Lucky I love both ;)
I had no idea that Ian played guitar on this song.
69gangstar69 somebody’s gotta play it lol. Bernard was on keyboards. He built his own synthesizer. I think that he is using that one here.
David Dockery yes it’s the Powertran Transcendent 2000.
Excellent version of this epic song.
I am not sure what it is called, but Hooky wrote in his book that this synth in particular was one that was self built by Bernard.
Sean Kent Transcendent 2000.
this song is so powerful and beautiful
it literally gives me chills
this is amazing live footage thanks so much!
the perfect band for rediscovery on youtube
Thankyou Ian! Eternally grateful! Thankyou Alicia Curtis for share! Hug from Portugal.
A M A Z I N G ! How I wish I'd been there...
Such intense music.
I never tire of JD.
Incredible
another stunning joy division video

joy division 4ever!!!
utterly brilliant! wish I had been there!
Ian Curtis is ALIVE!!!!
Pure magic 👻🖤
Raw..
Amazing and to think what other and more music ,and songs this great band could have made and accomplished. Sad.
wow and wow again!! love this video
Mesmerizing!. Thanks, Alicia, just missed the breaking glass.
That synth drone is a monstrosity; puts the studio version to shame. I can't tell what Bernard is using, most likely the Transcendant 2000?
I love how the lighting had to be
My particulars obsessions revisited...
uma lenda ..
minha música favorita do joy division
So good live.
So trippy. Wow. So much better than the record version. Much more powerfull.
The original is on the Unknown Pleasures album.
We almost see the dark souls around the band members...
that song kicks ass.
Great guitar :)

damn spectacular guitar sound
Muy buen video, Gracias por subirlo AliciaCurtis has de ser la esposa del Ian Curtis o su hermana?
So I now have the Here Are The Young Men VHS and can see where most of the rare live clips come from now.
@Billiam4 I don't think my headphones will ever be loud enough lol! It's just amazing how something so powerful was made by a group of lads in their early 20's!? They were kids! It just gives me hope that I can do something like this but take it to the next level.
this is how music has to be.
3:10 man that was a rough start lol

Thanks for digging up a video of this... strange stuff, not any less masterful

JD, I remember nothing = Génesis, Mama = U2, Bullet the blue sky.. 😉
This is probably Eindhoven 1980 or possibly it is Leuven.
@marchel26666 i did'nt mean kids literally. just using it in a general way. like lads or whatever. yeah they were over 20 obviously. im just sayin
