    The Spectral Incursion album is awesome. I love the artwork and love that it the front and back were glued on a 12" sleeve with a label window. It doesn't get any better than that.

      I really like that Spectral Incursion record a lot anyway, it's not the greatest thing ever, but it's solid, and they get bonus points for pure ambition. The primitiveness of it is just gravy! You're totally right about it not getting any better than that, hand-glued covers always scream out to me, "Take out your wallet!!"

    That coffee soda is deadly to me - I remember trying it when I lived in NY... Albert Ayler - I'm still not there yet, but what you were playing was enough bop for me to listen to.

      Perfect on Ayler. So think of that solo on "Bye Bye Blackbird" as "just the tip".

    One of my favorite parts or watching your videos is seeing the depth of your collection. The way you can go from Ayler to Demon shows definite depth. From avant-garde to MWOBHM. Now that is cool.
    Great video Aaron. Well done Spencer~

      Aw, shucks..... funny though, how out of those two, the Demon record is by far the "easier" listen, even though everyone claims to like jazz and only a few of us admit loving metal, haha!

    Right on. Glad to see you showing some 7" singles. I have a bunch of those Maiden re-issues, but really they aren't reissues because they were never pressed in the U.S. before. So they are late pressings but they are the first U.S. pressings. Great batch you pulled. Appreciate seeing them.

    • @MetalTheologian
      @MetalTheologian  8 років тому +1

      Ha! Yeah, I don't think that Purgatory 45 came out anywhere at all, except France... I could be wrong, but it seems like when they do turn up, which is almost never, they're always French pressings. It is pretty cool that they did those, but man.... so many of these other ones deserve reissues too, and not just those Brazilian bootlegs that came out a few years back, and now are just as hard to find as originals (even though they all play at 33 rpm, which is annoying as hell)!

    As the official Irish representative of Idaho, watch your back. I dig the Ayler. You can really hear the pain in it, That Demon cover art is rad. I haven't dared look at 45s because is I start looking at them...I just won't have any time to do anything else like eat or sleep.

    • @MetalTheologian
      @MetalTheologian  8 років тому

      Man, 45s are tough to collect anyway... you think you sift through a lot of shit to find a gem now? With 45s, it's even tougher, and it's harder to browse, too, because the covers are more delicate, and you have to actually read those labels, rather than just scan cover art. Ayler is the greatest, so glad to hear you not only dig it, but "get" it!

      Dude, those things are beautiful, aren't they? And what weird covers too, haha! I doubt you'd have much use for any of those, but they sure are fun to look at any way you slice it!

    Aaron, I am watching this a little late, but thanks for the mention of the Sato & Dauner - Pianology album. I am going to look for it. The Ayler sounded good, too. I don't have anything before 1964.

    • @MetalTheologian
      @MetalTheologian  7 років тому

      Dude, no shame.... I leave the old ones up precisely so that you can go back and peruse them if you want to.... I've done that myself with lots of people. And I might as well admit it's self-interested too: I kinda forgot about Pianology until you left me that comment! I'm not well versed in the pre-Spiritual Unity Ayler myself, but when I heard this one, after I got past the "hard bop" aspect that seems to put off the critics, I absolutely fell in love with it. I'm interested in hearing more, but there's so much!

    akira ishikawa and count buffalo's Uganda is a massive dose of tribal psychdelia..I have a few original pressings of there's..great band..sato or satoh is imo the greatest Japanese keyboard player ever..very consistent too from his early expermental stuff all the way thru his fusion efforts into the early 80's maintain there quality and inventiveness a brilliant and easy to find free trio session with sato is trinity on the German enja label an all time fave..ya bro nobody sounds nor feels like ayler..he sounds like angels and thunder..and his tone is raw and pure and real...my personal favorite is ghosts...peace Chris.

      Dude, great to hear from you! I was just starting to discover your channel when you went on hiatus so it's really good to see you back. I'm still pretty new on Sato/Satoh; I grabbed that reissue of Amalgamation a couple of years ago, but that and this one are pretty much it, although I've certainly been keeping an eye out. Thanks for the tip on the enja one, I always notice that label when I see it around, so if I come across Sato, I'll be sure to not dismiss it on account of the year, haha! Epic description of Ayler, it's totally true! Thanks for stopping by!

    That Albert Ayler sounded REAL good. I enjoyed what you had to say about the style too, some good points. Ricochet definately kicked ass. Now off to check out that Uganda record. Cheers

      I think Albert Ayler is one of the greatest musicians of all time... I think Bells is still my favorite of his albums over all, but this early stuff is really great--and important, if you ask me. If you ask me, that Count Buffalos album blows away a lot of Japanese records that get much more hype... by all means, check out Uganda!

    I did not know that they reissued his debut until now. This is a must order up and pronto. Thanks A~

      It's a public service, man! I think Ayler's "real" records are essential for sure, but this one is really special in its own way--in a way, even more so than the others, given how few things there are that sound anything like this. I literally can't think of anything else to compare this one to other than Cecil Taylor - Jazz Advance. But I gotta admit, Bells is still probably my *very* favorite, haha!

      @MetalTheologian  8 років тому

      Hahaha! No surprise you would appreciate the DIY-ness of that Spectral Incursion record. The early Demon LPs were on Carrere, but yeah, Clay had at least a couple of metal 45s. i feel like I've seen at least one or two others, but I can't think of what, at the moment. I may be remembering shit that never happened.......

    Awesome video! Love seeing whats hiding in your collection. Funny you pulled the Myth single. What's the chances of scoring 2 copies of that bad boy at some little shop while on vacation?!! Haha! Don't see that happening again. Great video guys!

    • @MetalTheologian
      @MetalTheologian  8 років тому

      Yeah man, that Myth 45 is a total winner! Glad you turned that thing up... and yeah, it's pretty funny that that thing would randomly show up in a video like this, haha! Kinda kills my "NWOBHM" title too, but I kept it anyway, cuz I thought it was snappy.

    Aaaron, break it down for me and WTF with the glue next to your turntable? sweet sealed copy of DETONATION. Shit man I remember picking up my copy @ Peaches back in '89 fave tunes Alone in Suicide and Eat the Flesh. killer riffs. Awesome 45s collection. cheers bud JC/Miami

      Haha! Man, I always have a bottle of glue there, so if I get a record in the mail with a jacket that came unglued, I can just fix the damn thing, and not have to hunt around the house for a bottle! Nice to hear another positive opinion on Detonation, now I'm even more stoked to check it out! I really thought the first one was pretty shitty and weak. Fuck, haven't thought about Peaches in a while!

      So glad to hear it, man.. I feel like I've been a bit on-again/off-again of late, so it means a lot to hear my VC friends are here for me! Hey, I'd be curious to know what you think of Food Brain, and for that matter, that Count Buffalos - Uganda record. I think you'd appreciate both even if you decide you hate 'em.... although I doubt you'd hate either. I'm sure that stuff is on UA-cam...........

    AYLER!!!! I've heard Electrum but need to check out that Uganda. Drum heavy = juicy. gorgeous Japanese records dude. Every once in a while you have to have a 45 night. Total commitment. Great Demon cover. Fun video bud. -Stav

    • @MetalTheologian
      @MetalTheologian  8 років тому

      Electrum is a lot more prog rock than Uganda, almost more English sounding, but that pushes the analogy too far, really. 45 nights are awesome! i used to have them a lot more often, but then, I used to buy 45s a lot more actively, too. Man, what I should probably do is bust out a bunch I've gotten over the last few years and not really given their due to.... that might be a good video, haha!

    Aaron, Albert Ayler sounds awesome, need to track down a copy for my collection. Above the Status Quo record on the shelve is your Impulse section? The spines look Impulse records. Killer 45rpm NWOBHM section and the needle drops sound fantastic.

    • @MetalTheologian
      @MetalTheologian  8 років тому

      Man, I'm a *huge* fan of Albert Ayler, I love him almost as much as Coltrane. And speaking of, those are all Impulse records you're seeing on the shelf there, but that's my Coltrane section... I have a few other Impulse ones too, just not so many in one big bloc like those, haha! Regarding the 45s, you probably have those yourself, don't you?

    • @vinilpt
      @vinilpt 8 років тому

      My 45s are more into thrash metal, have just a few about NWOBHM but none of the ones you show. Ok besides Iron Maiden! Ok after your video I went to my favorite record store and check the jazz section looking for Albert Ayler. Aaron so damn expensive, 30 and 40 euros... need to find the reissue ahahaha

    • @MetalTheologian
      @MetalTheologian  8 років тому

      Man, I'm impressed they had any Ayler at all. Here at least, you don't see that stuff around very often, unless it's a reissue. Once in while, though!

  • @5671050
    @5671050 8 років тому

    Myth? A band called Myth played my high school in like 83 hmmm makes you wonder? The other two singles were definitely in my wheelhouse!! The Ayler was also cool not to free for me!! LOL

    • @MetalTheologian
      @MetalTheologian  8 років тому

      Man, if you were in Rochester and these guys were from New Haven, I could totally believe it was the same band. Seems like it might be a bummer to drive all that way to play a high school, but they wouldn't have even had the single out by then, so they probably would have been taking anything they could get. I suppose on the other hand, it's kind of an obvious name..... but still, awesome to think you may have seen them live!

  • @highrantdistrict
    @highrantdistrict 8 років тому

    I was unsure at the beginning if you were gonna reach for the soda or the glue. Given the chaotic jazz that was playing, I was sure it was gonna be the glue. This is why I don't gamble.
    I don't know shit about jazz, and clear you know your stuff. The chaos in that Albert Ayler record drives me batshit. I don't know why; I used to think that it was because it's chaotic, but I enjoy chaos in other styles so that can't be it. No idea. I did recently find a jazz album I liked listening to, by Avishai Cohen. It's a newer ECM record and it's the Avishai Cohen from Israel who plays trumpet, not the Avishai Cohen from Israel who plays jazz bass. Who knew there were so many Avishai Cohens. I dug the drops from your NWOBHM 7" box.
    Still waiting for an episode of the Classical Theologian. That's gotta be coming, right? ;-)
    Cheers! Tom

    • @MetalTheologian
      @MetalTheologian  8 років тому +1

      Never heard of Avishai Cohen, but I'm curious now.... although the ECM business kinda makes me think twice, given my general experience with that label, haha! I haven't eaten any glue since I was in elementary school, by the way...
      Man, the classical shit is tempting, I really probably ought to do that one of these days, since almost all of what I have in my 'classical' section is electronic shit, like compilation albums of student compositions at various universities and shit like that. I pretty into collecting that shit for a while, and came across some interesting pieces. The problem is, I almost never listen to that stuff, so I'd have to have a little bit of a session to introduce the shit properly, unless I just do it as straight-up record porn...... that would probably a good thing for me metaphysically, but I'll have to be in the mood to put my heart into it, and right there is the vicious circle, haha!

    • @highrantdistrict
      @highrantdistrict 8 років тому

      Your ability to wax poetic is second to none. If you don't get paid for writing or talking, you should be.
      All I know of ECM is that some VC folks get excited when they talk about ECM. I didn't grab the album because it was on that label, it was just coincidence. I read an article about Cohen in the local free weekly paper because he was playing a show here. I didn't see the show but the article was comparing him to Miles Davis and explained that the album was sort of a tribute/farewell to his father who recently passed away. My father passed away long ago, but I sampled a clip, thought it was peaceful, and based on the 'message' picked it up. I enjoy it.
      Now the question is: would I have enjoyed the record *without* knowing the story behind it? And I can't answer that. I don't know. But that ties into my thoughts on classic art; to me, pretty shapes and color are just that, but knowing the history behind something - such as it being a break from repressive rules or a shift in history to expressions of joy or the abstract - makes a difference. SHOULD the history behind something make a difference? Probably not. But fact is ... it does.
      Cheers! Tom

    • @MetalTheologian
      @MetalTheologian  8 років тому +1

      Ha, thanks for the kind words! If I could figure out a way to do it, I would.
      Yeah, the vast majority of what I've heard on ECM is mediocre to bad. LIke basically new age shit with more emphasis on production than songwriting, with solos that don't hold your attention any longer than the duration of your elevator ride. But I keep falling for it, cuz there are a few that are really fantastic... all the ones I've found have been from the early days of the label, but you can't even go by the date, cuz a lot of the early ones are shit too. Glad it makes other people happy though, I guess.
      Very interesting thoughts on the story behind the art... I don't really have a pat response, except that you nailed why I tend to ignore lyrics (and frown on reviews by critics where they fixate on the "poetry" rather than the musical content)....... no answer though, all I can say is, I do like good records and good stories!

    "Balls out free shit" that about sums up free jazz. Haha! To hear a fan of that stuff be unpretentious enough to call it what it is is why people watch you man. It's the whole until you can laugh at yourself, you'll whimper like a schoolgirl when everyone else does let alone all the overly sensitive elitist jazz cats. Meh. Lookin' forward to the lowdown on the Bloodoogd, swear I remember that first slam way back when, very cool of Scott and smart as snot to hold back on it until the headspace is right. UK Quo Live on the floor....right on! Looks like Piledriver rooted? Man, that Hallowed Ground OG is sick. The High Roller 2-LP reissue is as close as I've gotten and it smokes. Couldn't have described Stormtrooper any better, sounds killer. I have the Demon PD you're talkin' about, the Clay release is sweet! Haha, that Spectral lp is the definition of old school! Another dive into Theologian's Record Emporium man, loved it! - Lj

    • @MetalTheologian
      @MetalTheologian  8 років тому

      Ha, man, I've been wanting to call the "jazz cats" out for a while on how they've talked about My Name Is Albert Ayler and Jazz Advance, cuz I think both those records are fantastic in a way that's extremely unusual, and those fuckers don't seem to get it at all. Haven't seen much of that in the VC, much to the VC's credit, but then again, I think fusion probably gets more slack in the VC than it deserves. Whatever though, I'll take that over guys geeking out over Blue Train and Kind of Blue, as if no other jazz albums had ever been made, which is what you get from the dickheads at places like Rolling Stone. I haven't really digested that Quo Live yet--haven't been in the right frame of mind--but man, Piledriver planted a seed which was fertilized and watered by Quo, Hello!, and Status Quo (what un-helpful album titles). The real impetus for that particular one, though, was one of the Gallagher brothers from Raven saying that that was his favorite live album. Stormtrooper really is awesome, I kinda didn't talk it up as much as it deserved in this video, haha! And Hollow Ground.... fuck man, that's one of the bands that got me going on collecting this shit! Always great to hear from you!

    Absolutely feckin' hilarious video, I laughted my tits off. Pity that bottle opener yoke does not work, it cost enough, ha ha. Watch your back now, the green brigade are coming LOL. Do you know I have no Ayler, I have never seen anything by him around and have never thought of looking for his stuff when I do buy online. I must recify that, post haste. What bug did you mention? My daugher is obsessed with bugs, so unusual for a girl to be interested in them As wonderful as your soda review are, I have to say that Spencer's critique is also awesome. I have that Dauner/Sato on digital - in fact I think it was you that focused me on it. It would be disasterous if you skulled back the glue instead of the soda, dude don't have them side-by-side, LOL!!!
    Talk soon, mate.
