Saxophone legend Achie Shepp talks about saxophone legend Albert Ayler who was leader of free jazz but is unfortunately unknown to most people nowadays.
Remember ESP Records? I had "Ghosts", "New York Eye And Ear Control" , "Spiritual Unity",all those weird transparent or colored vinyl LPs. I was a real fan of the avant garde.
Archie Shepp seemed like such a fiery, revolutionary guy when he was younger, it almost kind of odd to see him looking and sounding like a corporate CEO. I guess we all mellow out with age. Great video as always.
I studied with Bob Cunningham long ago. He's a genius and a great teacher. If you have heard him do Stella by Starlight, you know what I mean about Bob Cunningham.
Hey Jazz Video Guy -- glad you do these. Amazing to hear Shepp talk about Ayler. I'm a bass player and knew Bob Cunningham a bit (who Shepp refers to.) Great stuff!

Who knows, maybe one day Albert Ayler's music will find a new audience. We can only hope.
Jazz Video Guy you videos can have butterfly effect - thank you for your videos. I learn so much from your videos.
It’s all about what we can learn from Albert. I’m still not sure but it’s always there
Thanks for mentioning my dad!!!
So what do you play lad?
@@lahbl trombone and I have a son who plays trumpet.

He is still a revolutionary but expresses it in different ways.
Wonderful to get this inside story. Wish I had a time machine...
Great concept, the time machine.

I had the honor of working with Bob Cunningham on a show many years ago, Bebop, which opened off-Bway and featured Gary Bartz and Walter Davis, Jr.
This is beautiful, Bret!

@@JazzVideoGuy Nice!
What happened to that excellent documentary on Albert done about 10 years ago that I saw at Monterey? I wanted to buy it on DVD but it disappeared.
It’s on UA-cam right now!
@@desmondteague2441 yes! I watched a few months ago. Thank you
'I Am Albert Ayler', Swedish documentary, I believe? A lot of Swedish dialogue. A bittersweet story.
A rare gem. Who are the guys inset? is that John Tchicai on the right???
Mark Porter John Tchicai passed away a couple years before this. That's Bret Primack, the Jazz Video guy. It's his channel.
Thanks Mr F. I had some communication with John up until he died. A really nice man, RIP to him.
Archie always talks great. Unfortunately both Shepp and Ayler are utter charlatans as musicians
Couldn't disagree more.
@@JazzVideoGuy I agree with you man ...
John Coltrane thought they were both great, but you know much more about it than Coltrane, huh?
@@skiddoo-fr9ex Coltrane loved Shepp, Ayler and Sanders, I love them too
Well we can all see here who knows absolutely nothing
Archie, play your sax and shut up. Good night.
?
⁉️
Archie - please don't play your sax
this is so disrespectful and inspired by racism i can't believe it
@@willyounts3308 I don't hear racism -- just ignorance and disrespect.
