- In a bold move that underscores its commitment to global markets, Chinese automaker BYD unveiled its first pickup truck, the BYD Shark, at an exclusive event in Mexico City. This marks the first time BYD has chosen a location outside China for a global debut, highlighting Mexico's strategic importance to the company's expansion plans amidst the burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) market in North America.
The 2024 BYD Shark is designed to compete directly with established midsize trucks like the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado, Toyota Hilux, and Nissan Navara. Despite BYD's absence in the U.S. market, the Shark is poised to make a significant impact in regions where the pickup segment thrives, such as Latin America and Asia.
Crafted under the direction of BYD’s global design director, Wolfgang Egger, formerly of Alfa Romeo, Audi, and Lamborghini, the Shark boasts a robust and bold design. Its aesthetic borrows elements from the iconic Ford F-150 Lightning, featuring squared headlights, taillights, and a distinctive light bar that stretches across both the front and rear of the vehicle. The BYD name boldly stamped on the tailgate and grille is reminiscent of the Ford F-150 Raptor, cementing its rugged appeal.
The design, inspired by the oceanic predator after which it is named, incorporates a front rocker panel and wide wheel arches, adding a touch of ruggedness to its overall appearance. The 128.3-inch wheelbase is typical of midsize trucks, aiding in off-road capabilities while maintaining good vehicle proportions.
Inside, the Shark offers a modern and stylish cabin with multiple color highlights accentuating key features. Rectangular air vents and center console toggle switches are accented in orange, with contrasting stitching enhancing the visual appeal of the seats, dashboard, and door panels. The interior is anchored by a rotative 12.8-inch screen that functions in both portrait and landscape modes and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additional driver-focused technologies include a 10.25-inch digital cluster and a 12-inch head-up display.
Performance-wise, the Shark is powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors, delivering a combined output of 430 horsepower. It boasts an EV-only range of 62 miles thanks to its 30-kWh blade battery, and can achieve a total range of 528 miles with a full tank and charged battery. The truck also supports fast charging, which can replenish the battery from 20 to 80 percent in about 30 minutes.
Set to be initially manufactured in China, there are plans for a future production facility in Mexico. The BYD Shark will retail starting at $53,440 in Mexico, with two versions available, both equipped with the same robust powertrain. As BYD ventures into the competitive global pickup market, the Shark is definitely a newcomer worth watching.

National Security ( I CAN'T COMPETE WITH THEM)
A response to Biden 100% tariff, to show what American consumer is missing out.
Not missing much. ….they should call it BYD POS. 😂
Ford ranger PHEV
Been missing out on many, doesn't matter if you particularly like them or not, someone might like it and can't get it.
Loser and bitter@@GTKdje3
They’re going to build them in Mexico bypassing the tariff.
BYD is building real vehicles for real needs and purposes,
While Tesla is building weirdness just to be different
100% Tariff ....Ole Joe working hard to get that inflation number up
So conveniently forgotten is T-rumps ill advised inflationary tariffs the far right applauded. Increased tool prices cost me a fortune.
The negativity against Chinese products... a few here and a lot more in other UA-cam videos makes me understand....What the Japanese companies would have faced in America and Europe back in 50s and 60s ! It must have been really bad with no one to support. They rose in the 70s and 80s....And look at how long the Japanese have been dominant.....right from the 80s.
American lawmakers killed or contained japanese automobiles back then even the chip which japan could have been leading. But now times have changed everyone is observing what American government is doing
The American consumer may never get to judge/experience an actual Chinese EV for these will be prohibitively expensive after having been hit with an additional 100% tariff, even if those vehicles were manufactured in a country with whom the U.S. has a "free-trade agreement."
Coz chinese mades everything is based on copying and will not last like japanese and western cars.
cannot wait to get one and drive back to SoCal
I dont think youll be able to register it in the US
You could probably have it registered In mex and drive it for certain time and maybe miles. Quick look up says you came drive it in the states for up to a year
It will slay the competition - hurray!!
love it
It’s a PHEV. Is there another PHEV pickup truck anywhere else?
gwm has PHEV pickup
In Australia we have LDV hybrid pickup
@@fwgug GWM is also a Chinese auto brand, so... 100% tariff ALERT!
@@enshi835 LDV was bought by SAIC in 2011, like MG. So... another Chinese auto product.
@@dierhou Yes, LDV and MG both from Shanghai
National security threat +100000😂😂😂
Ignorance is terrible.
ok biden.
A normal hybrid, not PHEV, would sell really good in Iraq and the rest of the middle east. This size of truck is in demand there...
100% is a phev.
Looks promising! 👍🏽
Pick up is the real battle ground !
It slightly undercuts the Plugin Ranger. I think this is a great Costco run off the mil/ beach day out vehicle. Good stuff BYD
What is the wading depth and will the river crossings affect the battery?
🤣You mean crossing the Rio Grande from Mexico?
cannot wait to come to AU
I wonder how the engine and electric motor work together.
What if one fails less power?
I need atleast a 500-800 Km range Truck . without charging
If it can do this then why not
At speeds below 120km/h, the vehicle is driven by the electric motor, the engine is used as a generator at maximum efficiency to charge the battery。
Above 120km/h, the engine drives the vehicle directly while charging the batteries, and the electric motor drives the vehicle in a supporting role.
Of course, the actual situation is much more complicated than the above two statements, but the general principle is basically the same.
The combined range of 840km refers to the range with a full charge and full gasoline
0:19 BYD Shark has Electronic Lockers, but it’s struggling a little on that break over. Not terrible.
maybe the instructor is showing to the tester how big difference the locker can make...
Are you sure it has lockers ? Haven’t seen any in the spec sheets
its rear wheels are driver on pure EV- no drive shaft to the rear
Yeah notice that too.
Don't be jealous USA !
Ford Ranger from TEMU
Ford is cooked, their response is with the lil baby 45km of electric range Ford Ranger that's not even out yet cus they can't compete on manufacturing. Even Toyota plug in hybrid's have at least 65km of electric range.
The ford can carry 150kg more in the tray and 1000 extra kgs towing so they have different use cases
Is that Ford ranger from Temu?
😂😂😂
Hey, that was funny
I don't care who you are!!😂
Ford 0-100 5.7s? Which model
pick up trucks all look similar one way or the other.
People buy ford on amazon or ebay?
Ranger
Is that a f-150 lightning
Yes but Better and cheaper.
@@lovelight736 if you think byd can make a better truck than ford than idk what to tell you.
@@hehel5163 at least the U.S gov think so🤣
@@hehel5163 China is the manufacturing hub of the world now and BYD is at the top of the auto manufacturing at that. So yes BYD can and do make better vehicles than Ford and its not even close.
@@ensteffo being the top and the best are two totally different things. Next are you going to tell me that they can make a better track car than Ferrari or Porsche. 😂
53k usd for 1.5 liter engine with 2 batteries.... 😂 .If they want good sales this pick up truck should be cheaper than maverick for sure. I like idea of making middle size pick up trucks more fuel efficient with saving some basic off-road capabilities, but hybrid system will fit much better for them. With fully electric and plug in systems you automatically eliminate customers that don't have own houses ( live in apartments and condos). And this big part. Usually someone who can afford own house will not even look in direction of mid size pick up !
When it battles on a show obstacle.....
maybe the instructor is showing to the tester how big difference the locker can make...
Based on the footage and a lot of people inside the truck, and multiple trucks in the circuit, this could be a sort of press release, and there is a huge probability that the drivers are from media, and could not have experience with this type of circuit..
Why do they keep calling this a truck?
It's got a design that already looks like 20 years ago and it's an EV made in China. What's not to love? LOL!
BYD has about 100 design models if you care to check out, some of them would blow your mind. This particular F150ish style is picked to fit your Mexican market, chose by many local dealers. So open your mind and open your eyes before you laugh at anybody (particularly the Chinese) my dear sir
@@sittingduck02 Save your soliloquy for the next time Donnie is in court. Guaranteed to put him (or anyone) to sleep.
@@glennelbey4454 another shocking statement to put yourself in the same league of President Trump…i will rest my case from here my dear sweet sir
IDK, if midsized pickup buyers in Mexico can lay out $53,000. For an electric hybrid I think maybe some of us should be busting thru the Mexican border heading south!
-or- the chicoms are expecting a change in trade soon?
You have a little brain.
Maybe so,
But if you and your large brain disagree your just not very good @ basic math.
Mongoloids also have big brains 🤪. @Play4Vida

looks way too much like a F150 / Lighting. .. . .
Ok now they're trying too hard. It's like they're planning a sneak attack on Tesla.
It is ugly to buy an Asian vehicle. Why don't buy rivian r1t?
It's ugly to see uneducated people using Internet
We will not sell this car in the United States because there are better cars in the United States.
Quality has gone down in the USA significantly.
better cars mean unable to compete !! the same meaning as "national security " 🤣🤣🤣
did you see Huawei phone in us market? But China didn't ban Apple phone there. So the phone companies can compete each other to make a progress.
54 G's FOR MADE IN CHINA TRUCK FOR MEXICO
THAT'S GOING FLOP BIG TIME
Somehow I doubt very much Mexico is the targeted market.
I could see the taliban of south America forking out the cash for a few though.

FUNNY US GOVT ALWAYS LIKE FREE TRADE BUT WHEN THERE IS A BIG COMPETITOR THEY DON'T LIKE FREE TRADE ANYMORE LOL 🤣
Jealous much ?? 😂😂😂😂
Tesla, nissan, chevy, toyota, bmw all of them are made in Mexico 😂
What an ignorant pos 😂😂
People here are already buying them. American trucks, Tacoma around the same price nuts imo the nget this one. Hybrid is the differentiator Gas here is super expansive and horrible quality, and govt controls the pricing which is around 4.50 a gal for regular.

Naive, established brands are also produced in China.
