Worst One Yet: XFX RX 5700 XT THICC II Ultra Review | Do Not Buy

  • The XFX RX 5700 XT THICC's cooling is as much of a meme as its name. We're benchmarking the THICC II Ultra 5700 XT GPU today.
    Sponsor: Buy PowerColor's Red Dragon Radeon™ RX 5700 (geni.us/7WSE5 on Amazon)
    Article: www.gamersnexus.net/hwreviews...
    MAIN CARDS TESTED:
    XFX RX 5700 XT THICC II Ultra (Amazon): geni.us/ySLN
    Sapphire RX 5700 XT Pulse (Amazon): geni.us/8pcskY
    Sapphire RX 5700 XT Nitro+ OC (Amazon): geni.us/1kl9Z
    Gigabyte RX 5700 XT Gaming OC (Amazon): geni.us/AHum3
    MSI RX 5700 XT Evoke (Amazon): geni.us/ZmJEx
    The XFX RX 5700 XT THICC II Ultra has become a bit of a meme -- well, actually, it started that way -- but it's still an expensive, theoretically high-end RX 5700 series video card. Unfortunately, the performance ends up low on our charts, so part of this content will look into why that is. The XFX 5700 XT THICC has fierce competition from cheaper alternatives, like the Gigabyte Gaming OC, Sapphire Pulse, and Sapphire Nitro, and needs to deliver competitive cooling and performance to outmatch the alternatives.

      I bought a Gigabyte and I am thinking about returning it. I don't know how, but both mine and the one tested by Computerbase.de have pretty stupid junction temperatures. In my case that results in the ventilator spinning up for a second or two when junction gets around or over 100C and then ramping down again, only to do the same a few minutes later. The Gigabyte isn't exactly silent either. It is almost there and most people won't hear it over their speakers. I do but it is not bad. However this constant ramping when I play a game for a good amount of time is starting to drive me nuts...

      I did. I read reviews from PCWorld, TechPowerUp and Guru3D.com, they all had good experiences with this card and highly recommended it. I bought it and so far so good. Although loud under load, it's a great performing card and never goes past 70c even when benchmarking, Memory Temps according to GPU-Z hit a max of 74c. I can post screenshots or videos if you guys want and I'd recommend looking at other reviews as well, GN isn't the be-all and end-all, maybe he got a bad card, got a beef with XFX or something. Hell if I know.

      Golden Maximo wait so i didnt fuck up by buying this card? Thats great news

    • @habibsspirit
      @habibsspirit 4 роки тому +17

      @@2BsWraith Here's the deal, I also thought about returning this card after seeing GN's review and teardown, I even sent an email to the retailer about it but then I thought to myself "Wait a second, I have this card for over a week now and I've been loving it so far and there's no way those other reviewers were all paid shills"
      So I benchmarked the card myself in various games and software, the card hit the temps I said in my other comment and I had no problems whatsoever with anything.
      HOWEVER. I had to follow a few steps which I'm sure GN didn't do:
      1. I downloaded the latest OC bios @ XFX's website and flashed it using AMD flashing software.
      2. I downloaded the latest AMD drivers, NOT THE ONE RECOMMENDED BY XFX
      3. I downloaded MSI Afterburner, used the default settings and set my own fan curve, which, like I said before - made the card quite loud but not enough to be noticeable while gaming at low-medium volume (I use m50x's with velour pads for reference). Here's the screenshot of my fan curve:
      prntscr.com/pc0g0i
      And that's it, after that all went well and golden.

      @Mr Singo I had the XFX RX 5700 XT RAW 2 and It was quite Bad. The cooling Design performs the Same Like the Thicc. The Fans are noisy, my card had a noisy coilwhine too and it runs pretty hot (over 95 degree celsius on VRAM in Furmark). Overall the Card feels fragile and is made with a lot cheap thin plastic. I Would Not recommend the Thicc 2 or RAW 2 even If the price is good.

    I bought one of these cards and memory temps were topping 101C with simply gaming on it for a couple of hours. I returned the card the very next day. Now from seeing the teardown, I can clearly see why memory temperatures were so bad. That masterful combination of covering the memory with a cheap bit of metal and attaching that to the heatpipes with a little heat pad. I wonder whether XFX engineers muttered the words, "there I fixed it" when thought of this ingenious design.

    Hey I was thinking you could do a video about air-coolers again but this time show how upgradable they are.
    I mean, we know that AIO's don't always come with the greatest stock fans and noctua demonstrated that you can meet performance with a better fan design by putting a prototype fan on their U14 and it matched a retail D15. So something to explore could be the best bang for your buck, which coolers benefit the most from an improved fan, how do standard radiator fans match up against fans made with CPU coolers in mind. Might be interesting to also try mounting CPU fans to a radiator and seeing how they perform.

    I have the non ultra version of this card, and I can confirm everything said on this review. I only bought it because I got it for about 25% cheaper than normal price here where I live, as it was a returned card. I flashed the BIOS as it had the issue of the fans not spinning until it reached 100 degrees, etc.. That solved it, but the fans just spin too high, very loud, no good temps, specially memory. I ended up taking it apart, put thermal paste and pads between the plate(that one that makes contact with the memory) and the cooler, I also applied thermal pads between, the back plate and the PCB. In the end, I saw indeed some thermal improvements, specially after undervolting. I have it now at 1045mV, core frequency target at 2020mhz and memory at 950mhz, runs at quite good performance and not too loud, fans between 2100 and 2400rpm max.

    • @habibsspirit
      @habibsspirit 4 роки тому +1

      I also have the non ultra version of this card. Here's what I had to do to make it run nice and smooth:
      1. I downloaded the latest OC bios @ XFX's website and flashed it using AMD flashing software.
      2. I downloaded the latest AMD drivers, NOT THE ONE RECOMMENDED BY XFX
      .
      3. I downloaded MSI Afterburner, used the default settings and set my own fan curve, which made the card quite loud but not enough to be noticeable while gaming at low-medium volume (I use m50x's with velour pads for reference). Here's the screenshot of my fan curve:
      prntscr.com/pc0g0i
      And that's it. I might try messing with the voltage, clocks and apply thermal paste eventually but for now I'm pretty satisfied, the card runs everything I want without hiccups, without ever going past 70°C and without being too loud so whatever, not worth the effort right now in my case scenario.

    12:22 Why are all the card's frequencies around 1900MHz?
    AMD lists the 5700 XT's "game frequency" as 1755MHz (which I thought meant the sustained frequency over a long period of stress) and a boost frequency of 1905 MHz. So I don't understand why the cards boost all the time?
