Nanci Songs & Interview from 1987 TV programme "Gettin' Tough New Country" BBC4 w/ A Kershaw presenter. Lone Star State Of Mind From A Distance Ford Econoline
Nanci was an Angel on Earth, as I'm hoping she is now in Heaven. She was as unblemished, untainted as one can be in the world of recording. I'm sure she sacrificed much by not allowing herself to be pigeon-holed into musical categories or 'sexed up' and marketed like other female recording artists. Rest in Peace, Nanci. You are much loved.
I found Nanci after she had passed. I have to say that I love that gal. Lone Star Frame of Mind always picks me up. I think when I moved to BC, Canada from Ontario way back in 1971 I would have traveled to TEXAS to see her. YES, I would have become a "ROADEE". ....B. Simpson, Pender Island, BC, Canada.
This programme was where I discovered Nanci. I agree, lovely performance. I had the vhs tape of it lying around and finally found a friend to digitise it. I hope it doesn’t get deleted. (There is more Nanci stuff on my channel!)
@@peteterry2877 I have the full programme..I put up the Steve Earle and Lyle Lovett clips. I can’t be certain..but I’m sure this was a one off. Following this there was a load of “new Country” tv shows. I did record some but can’t find those tapes. What I have is on my channel if you go through it.
I encountered her with Iris DeMent, John Prine, the Chieftains, Emmylou Harris. Primarily John Prine. The more I poke and prod around folk-country-rock-a-billy the more gems and characters I find. We lost several to life choices, accidents, or age. We've lost more, including Nanci, and John Prine in this damned plague.
Oh My! I've been in radio (and records) for a very very long time and I can't believe I never heard of her . . . especially on KPIG where she would fit perfectly.
Sorry to tell you this but she died about 10 hours before you posted this. I am Pacific Northwest born and bred yet I first heard Nanci on her 1983 album, Once In a Very Blue Moon and haven't stopped loving her since. She had a grace, elegance and humanity that is in short supply these days, especially in the music and entertainment industries. She will be sorely missed.
context aside, this is why I've always said John Denver, Jimmy Buffet and Nanci Griffith can make you feel good (among others a bit but this song fits that odd idea so well)
The heavens dropped Nanci in Austin, cause well Austin needed her. She was kind coy beautiful and cute as a bug. Talent beyond description. She was always humble talking bout Texas,.but gd look at her. Austin misses you Nanci, but we were sooo lucky to have had u. U know that girl.. yup
I love that very few people have discovered this video, frankly. There's something about Nanci this makes me prefer her to be a hidden treasure, untainted, forever.
Yep, I'm one of them, shame on me, discovered her only yesterday. So beautiful and talented, she grabbed my heart. What amazed me is that she's only a little younger than me. Maybe she wasn't played in Australia
@Robert Edwin House she's fabulous, we weren't lucky enough to hear her in Australia, 40 years ago. Not our fault. She obviously wasn't too interested in the Australian market back then. I'm also a big fan of Iris DeMent.
A beautifully talented 'New Country' or 'Americana', writer/performer call it what you will, but as soon as she starts you know it's Nanci Griffith and no one else - Fantastic video - Love her!!
This is some of the best footage I have ever seen of Nanci having fun with her great song "Lone Star State of Mind" (maybe I'm biased, being from Texas, lol). But don't I hear a banjo in this song? Where is he/she?
The band is clearly miming as that's the studio version. The female harmony vocalist (Lucy Kaplansky) isn't there either. (The banjo player is Bela Fleck who's a he.)
First thing I noticed too, studio backing track with live vocal... no mics on the amps or acoustic, ect. Plus when you've heard something so many times you know the difference between it being exactly the same and pretty close.
Someone make sure this treasure Lone Star State of Mind is preserved. The quality here is somewhat degraded from the one I remember several years ago. Thanks - Texas boy.
It’s just a digital copy of a very poor videotape I recorded from my TV. This well before HD etc. I’m hoping the BBC kept an original copy....but I wouldn’t count on it. They deleted a load of good stuff back then. But I agree, it needs preserving. Lone Star State Of Mind is where I started listening to Nanci.
More Lone Star gold from Nanci. Love the look back at the drummer. Interestingly she is trying real hard not to hit those guitar strings on her Guild! Is it because she is doing a live vocal against a backing track and she's trying to keep her vocal track clean?
LOVED the interview!!! “….and have your self a time!” Where was this gem filmed??? This was awesome to see!!! Thank you sooo much for putting it up!! Getting to see her sing out in the open was wonderful! So full of life! THATS the Nanci I remember!!
Hi Cindy. Glad you enjoyed the video. If you mean the location of the performances etc, I’m not sure. It’s a programme I saw when first broadcast on the BBC and fortunately I decided to record it.
Love the video, but y'all realize she is playing to a recording, right?? The amps aren't even on and she is not hitting the strings. There are female background vocals. Any women in sight other than Nanci?? From a distance? Same... Surprised she agreed to this. Hoaky...
I don’t ever remember her being angry. I do know that she survived 2 bouts of cancer and lost her mother to Alzheimer’s. Perhaps that’s what made her seem different to you.

God took a great gift from us.
@@RealMiniatures Perhaps, but He also gave us a great gift in Nanci. So greatful to have lived in her time. Let’s live up to her expectations.

I fell in love with Nancy the first time I heard her voice. ❤️
This was before Texas shared her with the world. She's an Angel with beautiful voice .

She was so gorgeous! Loved her music

God, keep Nanci. A special Angel from heart graces and real folk-abilly!
❤ you Nancy always will
One of the great folk/country poet/songwriters. Incredibly original and completely genuine.
God, she was beautiful.
WOW. 💥✨🗽⚡️🌟
One of her best performances. Used to be on you tube but was removed. Great to see it back. She is so full of energy.

She was everywhere in the 80's and 90's...must have had a narrow musical bandwidth.
10/10... the early days, have never seen this. Crack session musicians as well.
She's at a distance now but close to me. Lived in both Denver and Texas..
I love that so much!
context aside, this is why I've always said John Denver, Jimmy Buffet and Nanci Griffith can make you feel good (among others a bit but this song fits that odd idea so well)
I have always liked the three artists you mention (as well as many others). Missing Nanci though since her
passing several days ago.. RIP sweetheart.
Remember this video when it was first shown on the BBC, loved Nanci and her music ever since, thanks for posting.
Thanks for posting. I remember seeing this way back in 1987 - my first introduction to this great American artist.
Glad you enjoyed. I too discovered Nanci through this programme.
Thanks for sharing this with me, this is precious
We miss you Nanci. You always brightened up my day

Still very hard to watch, it will be a long time before heartbreak gives way to just being glad that we have her music.
She was only 68 when she died. She had so much more to give us.

I had never heard her early stuff--like this. It's so much better than her later stuff, where she sang without expression.
This isn't that early. 1977 was early for her....this is from 5th album.
This is the Lone Star State of mind!
I'm so glad I found this video. It is a treasure. Thank you so much for posting it.

Remember when this programme aired in the uk on bbc. Featured some great music from some new artists. Would love to see the full programme
Thanks so much for this post. Found out a new one tonight, Nanci thought TX was a boring place. She has footage I have never seen.
Texan beauty with talent to boost.
Felicito a John Jobling por subir esta joyita, Nanci y los muchachos son una maravilla!!!!!!!!

She sang “From a Distance “ 10x better than Bet Middler!
I don't really like the song, by anybody. My favourite Julie Gold song (which was beautifully covered by Nanci) is "Southbound Train."
Who is in the band here? they all look so young!
They did some overdubbing .Add background voices and a banjo. The result is exciting.

this was Nanci's peak...for whatever reasons, she became angry/political afterwards and it was total turnoff.

Yes. Very sad news today. 68 is no age. Although I think she had been ill lately.
I appreciate your comment.
