Sadly, the next two movies are so bad they’ll make you question if the first one was good. We all wish they just stopped after the first one and we could imagine the rest being cool. The Animatrix was pretty cool though, it’s a bunch of short animated stories that fills in the back story.

Specifically the shorts The New Renaissance Part 1&2 and Final Flight of the Osiris (A prelude to Reloaded they put in theaters attached to a movie i cant remember)!! A loooota info in those 3 short films will take about 30-45min total... Amazing animation and the background of the overall story is gonna 'Wreck Your Gooch!' 😁🍻

This movie hit harder in 1999 when the world was on the cusp of apocalypse. Everyone was using dial up internet and we were told that every system that maintained society and the economy would collapse. The computers that held everything together would collapse because they couldn’t compute the year 2000 in coding. It sounds ridiculous but everyone thought we were going to die. Y2K

I remember I went to a club (a lot like the one Neo is invited to by the White Rabbit) for the millennium and I honestly was a bit nervous to look outside, I peaked outside half expecting to see the world on fire 😅
I was slightly disappointed that it turned out to just be another day…I think the worst I had was an alarm that needed to be reset but all the other electronics else in my house were totally fine (a watch was a bit confused about the date but nothing major)
A bit crazy when you think about it that so many things the were still in production so close to 2000 but couldn’t count that high, nowadays everything goes up to crazy numbers in advance I still find it amusing we went from one extreme to the other 🤪
But I’ll never forget that feeling of being sucked into the whole millennium bug fear mongering…pretty sure some other dude across the street must have seen my puzzled look checking around for signs of the apocalypse and shouted across “yep, we’re still here” 🤣

Personal I was little worried about 2012 prediction. Not because of any actual doomsday. But if I was a terrorist group this would be great boon to take advantage of gullible people and paranoia. Could easily see a domino effect of one maybe even few attacks that would cause mass panic for those doomsday prepers and other religious nuts to do something stupid.

A fun fact, John Wick is a big giant love letter to The Matrix in a few ways. The director, Chad Stahleski, was Keanu's stunt double for The Matrix. The actor for the continental doctor played a very important character in the second Matrix movie, and of course, Laurence Fishburne being the homie in all 3 movies is a given.
The Matrix is also quite literally the movie that pioneered slow motion in fight scenes. Every 2000s action movie after this was trying to do what they did with bullet time.

I saw this movie way before its world premiere in 1999, as a part of tech demo by DELL, who provided the systems used for Matrix's CGI. It was a wonderful experience back then, and it still aged well because it mixed practical and CGI effects together in a unique innovative blend. For example the 180-degree camera during Trinity's flying kick or Neo's bullet-dodging moment is 100% practical. There were dozens of cameras mounted on a semicircular beam, all synchronized to fire within milliseconds from the previous one; that's how you get the flyaround in slow-mo. A truly limit breaking movie.
Too bad the sequels spoiled what could've been a truly epic story.

39:30 There's actually a pretty solid logic to this. Once you fire a bullet, it's on a defined ballistic trajectory that can be instantly parsed if you can read data straight from the Matrix, and the bullet is just another element of the Matrix itself. It's why Agents can dodge bullets, and why Neo can now control them. But when you fight hand-to-hand, every action is guided by a will and can't be read as just another data point or directly controlled by Neo. It's why the Agents don't go all bullet-time to just dodge punches, etc. like when Morpheus tried to fight them.

This is really one of the most intelligent movies to come out of Hollywood. The Matrix simulation is based on the Cartesian philosophy, specifically the Evil Demon (or Evil Genius) argument that Descartes posed as a challenge to his own Cogito (I think, therefore I am) in which reality is an illusion created by an omnipotent being tricking us into believing what we believe. It also references Descartes' dream argument in that perceived reality is actually a dream. The movie is also VERY heavily influenced by the original animated Ghost in the Shell, which was also very philosophical and explored concepts if identity such as: who are we when our bodies become interchangeable

It is an often missed portion of Morpheus' exposition, they have a rule about not freeing minds past a certain age. This is of course rooted in the understanding that adult minds are more "hard-wired" and would have a tougher time adjusting to the change between real world and the matrix, but also addresses the concerns of having a spouse or children in the simulation. Altogether, the younger you free the mind, the less attachments they will have to the simulation and the easier it will be to disassociate with the lives of those still "plugged in."

It all has a purpose in setting the stage, or in world building, or in driving the story forward. Unfortunately the 2nd and 3rd installments are diminishing returns. The second suffers from overused (and bad) CGI; though it’s a good story still. The 3rd is not a good story at all IMO. However, they’re both worth watching to see how it the trilogy goes.

"Most sources say that the idiom “my way or the highway” has its origins in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s. It is said to have emerged when itinerant individuals, particularly young people from that era, frequently relied on hitchhiking and other means to travel across the United States." It wasn't until today that I caught the reference with Neo and his boss in the beginning of the movie.
"You feel as tho you are special; as if the rules do not apply to you."
This is foreshadowing of Neo being The One where rules of the Matrix do not apply to him.

Great reaction buddy, this is one of those movies everyone needs to see at least once. Especially with how far we've come w/ social media and the internet and AI and VR, etc., the underlying theme and premise is even more relatable now than it was when it came out which is a feat that few movies accomplish.
The technical parts of this are also amazing and there are some cool behind-the-scenes videos on UA-cam that shows how they did those bullet dodge scenes and stuff - they had to invent all new types of cameras and software just for this movie to pull off some of those scenes, so the impact this movie had to the filmmaking industry was almost as big as the cultural impact it had.
The other Matrix movies are pretty good, but this first one is still the best by far (imo), although your mileage may vary.
    Cheers

In regards to your question at 11:03-- "My way or the highway," is another way of saying, "either do it my way or leave." As in, you can't participate in the activity if you don't follow the instructions. Either obey or go away. Said one more way, "Either follow my orders or hit the road."

The Matrix is a TVA from Marvel on a Universal scale, Neo is Loki who keeps the peace between machines and humans, Agent Smith is Kang. So Matrix is an epic film from all points of view (religion, human behavior, artificial intelligence), and in the end without love you could not live a life, a moment, a second in the Universe.

Prolly somethin with a skull mask and glowing eyes. Grim reaper type stuff. If the matrix is basically a video game, imma customize the hell out of my outfit at the very least.

Just as Morpheus asked Neo who wanted to know, Do you want to know the truth of what the Matrix is? Many people say that they do want to know, but once one learns where it leads, that's when people begin to reject and resist it. However, I'm not saying it isn't true to have this desire, I'm only saying this to prepare you to receive the message once it's mentioned.
The red pill is not just "truth", It's a specific kind of truth. It represents the ultimate truth, and the ultimate truth stands to oppose a person's desires, preferences, and beliefs. It is also not just intellectual knowledge, it has to do with the internal condition of a person's heart, because the message must be received in a very specific way.
The reason why is because such a truth is already present with you. It is the splinter in "the back of the mind", and that me would mean that in order to not already have this truth would mean that there is a resistance against it at some level (to fight for the system).
If the heart of the person does not change when learning the message but is still given to his old ways prior to hearing it, he would neither be a red pill, nor a blue pill. He would be a mixture of the two, a purple pill, One who has knowledge, but no awakening. One who has the power of that knowledge, yet no "rebirth"/transformation. The nature of the purple pill is worse than a blue pill, because it actually has knowledge and therefore power in its ability to enforce the lie, because power comes with such a knowledge, hence why it is concealed and hidden, and encrypted.
Thus, Revelation and transformation are at the very core of this film, resulting in a transformed life. If a person doesn't change, or if his life doesn't change, the message is not truly received, It only makes a person more powerful in rejecting the truth and to make the illusion stronger.
The two pills, red and blue, represent the tree of life, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Both have "a wisdom". Both have "a level of consciousness", and both see reality through a lens. One lens is the accurate perception of reality, and the other is a false perception. However, even the false perception can be supported with evidence and logic, hence why it is a wisdom, but it is an "evil wisdom".
This would mean that in order to discover what is accurate and true is not just an intellectual pursuit, it's *a moral* pursuit, and while a person can have *solid* intellectual grounding for his beliefs, the very lens by which he chooses to see things could itself be immoral, and yet one believes he is pursuing "the truth" precisely because he's looking at his intellectual grounding rather than his subconscious which only sees it that way due to a preference that desires to see it that way which is separated from the truth.
This can be seen in Cyphers (relatable) conclusion to reject the red pill, but it was still an immoral decision, even though he had a rationale behind the decision.
This is the purpose of the question the beginning, do you really want to know what these things mean?

The Lobby shootout scene is iconic. The music is "Spybreak!" by Propellerheads. The whole album is amazing and much of it has been commercially successful in soundtracks. On Her Majesty's Secret Service has a baseline that actually beats the one in Spybreak! in my opinion. "History Repeating" and "Bang On!" will be recognizable.

@@Ylyrra I think they made the record with licensing in mind, just a hunch. They were able to get OHMSS but that never got used (but it SLAPS) and apparently couldn't get the rights to the Mission Impossible theme as they guard it carefully and had franchise plans already when DDRR was made. So they made a derivative version that somehow managed to get the spot for the music for that iconic shootout scene.
Like, if they had made the official MI song it wouldn't have been useful for The Matrix.

12:49 notice the reflection in Morpheus' glasses - showing two possible choices at the same time.
I think, to get this effect, they filmed the scene with Neo twice, then 'pasted' the two different shots onto the two separate lenses of the glasses.
