This movie pioneered the special effects that we today take for granted but watching this back in 1999 was literally jaw-dropping

This when Actors worked on Sets together and Acted, instead of relying on Special effects.
Saw a preview of a movie recently where not only was there a scene with a group of actors having a meeting, while none of the Actors were in the room at the same time. But some of them were shooting their Scenes from other Countries.
Some Actors hadn't even been Cast yet and had to shoot their scenes later with body doubles.
So basically even a simple scene of a meeting relied on Body Doubless, Digitally altered Actors, and actors sust phoning in their parts.
Its just so disappointing.
That's not a Movie set.
The Matrix was a Movie set with Actors working together and Special Effects that still hold up today. There's very little you'd change even given today's effect's.
It's still a Classic in my book.
The special effects mostly hold up to today's standards if you ask me.
Hell, the effects on this film sometimes look more natural given less reliance on CGI like we have today, since instead it uses a more a masterful mix of green screen, natural pyrotechnic, ballistic, and wire work than is used today. These organic special effects as well as practical effects, camera tricks and clever editing, makes many scenes look even better than today's movies that use CGI as a crutch.
Its safe to say the special effecs can be compared with terminator 2 back then, jaw dropping aswell
Possibly because of the reliance on CGI now has made them lazy. They don't even try to make awe inspiring shot's, and instead go straight to CGI.
It's like they don't even have to try anymore.
There was a great movie I saw hundreds of times growing up called "Tora! Tora! Tora!".
It was a 1970''s movie based on the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour.
At the time most of these movies were made with little model airplanes & boats shot up close to look real.
But the Directors of Tora! Tora! Tora! used real planes, boats and stunt men to the point where a few stunts went wrong, but were so good they were left in the released film.
Some of the crash scenes were so big they only had one shot at them due to budget constraints. But they pulled them off.
There's two scenes in particular where the Stunts went wrong, but luckily nobody was killed. And the finished shots were amazing because obviously the Stunt men were really running for their life.
So in the same way this 1970 movie upped it's game and broke boundaries for Special Effects, The Matrix & Terminator 2 did the same in the 1990''s and set the pace going foward.
They were just out of their league for that era, and have stood the test of time.
Keanu Reeves has quietly put together a nearly 40 year career. He has a franchise series at this moment "John Wick" films. Critics still do not appreciate his work while fans flock to his movies.👏👏

This movie set a very high bar back in 1999. Those special effects still hold up today. The storyline is just plain EPIC.
What's make The Matrix even more special is this was in a time before there were blogs, social media, the internet was still a work in progress, and cell phones either didn't exist or were not as prevalent in society at the time.
Only shame is they changed the original story from using humans as cloud processing power vs batteries bc most audiences in 99 didn’t understand how computers worked

There were no 3 great movies, only this one.... and far more important from special effects were philosophical and especially political messages : fight the system. Back then young people fought against globalism. Today they embrace it....
No surprise 'sequels' were total bs, deliberately ruined by Hollywood.

When this came out in theaters I went to see it 6 times. I made all my friends go see it. “Have you seen the matrix yet? No? LETS GOOOO!”

Same, saw it 3 times opening weekend. Saw the matinee then went back grabbed EVERYONE who was in the dorm and all sprinted off to wait in line for the 11 o clock showing, then we all(most) went back the next day
This is a masterpiece for the ages. It literally pushed cinema into the next era.
Definitely the 'Star Wars' of it's age.
I defy ANYONE to name two movies that more totally altered how films were made.
... Aside from the first one with sound, and the first one with color, maybe.

@@TheN9nth Those are all great films, but I don't know that they really *changed* the way movies were made. With the possible exception of 'The Wizard of Oz' given that it may have been the first color film.

The only innovation I feel it really brought was the 360 camera setup, but I haven't seen it used much since to be honest.
Aw man everyone edits out the line, 'You think that's air you're breathing?' It's my fav part of the scene!

The fact that this movie was shot in 1999 (23 years ago) and it still kicks ass so firmely.. says a lot. The action, the story, the visuals, the thriller.. everything is top notch.

Too bad the brothers that made this movie script and directed it went into some kind of very weird Military program and came out as really weird things known as "Transexuals" after the experiment..

@@visceraljourney pretty interesting thing to say. The movie was ahead of it's time.. or not.. Simulacra and Simulation ( Simulacres et Simulation in French), published in 1981, is a philosophical treatise by Jean Baudrillard. The Matrix makes many connections to Simulacra and Simulation.
Objectively the best movie ever. The combination between storytelling and pacing makes it the closest thing to the perfect film. In most movies the time taken to build the world makes scenes feel drawn out and are ultimately unnecessary whereas in The Matrix there is no time wasted. It cannot be overstated what a mind blowing bombshell this movie was when it came out.
After a titanic early viral marketing campaign we all finally went in to see a film brilliantly written around profound philosophical quandaries that is at the same time one of the most badass, slick action movies ever. It introduced a wider western audience to Japanese anime and Chinese kung-fu elements, and crested a returning wave of steampunk AND cyber-noir aesthetics. And those amazing special effects had never been seen before.
Often imitated, but never bettered, The Matrix is a masterpiece.

If you are old enough to remember The Matrix when it was first released, then do you remember "Croucher Tiger, Hidden Dragon" too?
It wasn't my type of movie, but the effects were just out of this world. Fair enough. it was a bit later so effects had progressed. But the effects were just out of this world. Like People flying and fighting mid air. It was mind blowing.
As I said, not my first choice of movies as I'm not into the whole Martial Arts thing. Bur Crouching Tiger was crazy.
Also, truely choregraphed fighting scenes weren't a thing in western movies before this one, now it's everywhere. Legend of Hong Kong cinema Yuen Wu Ping did a stellar job for the Matrix, and did bring a surreal aspect to impecably orchestrated fights.
@@pjnolan7989 I love Crouching Tiger because that was my gateway to Kung Fu films. That's how I discovered Stephen Chow and that's why I watched Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer. That's what shaped my taste for fight scenes, I prefer wide shots and actors who can actually fight so you don't have to hide their faces with shaky cams and quick cuts.
The theme at the credits is "Wake up" by Rage against the machine. That being said, the entire Soundtrack is a gem, one of the best OST ever, fully recommend to listen to. The other two secuels also has a terrific OST, glad you enjoy this movie. Cya guys!!!
I went straight from the movie theater after seeing this to Hastings music store and bought the soundtrack. My best friend was with me and he bought it too. This soundtrack is complete fire. I still have it and that RATM track stays in my playlist-especially at the gym. 🔥

This was one of the best soundtrack CDs of any movie. I bumped this soundtrack and end of days in my regular music rotation in high school.
Clubbed to death was my favorite track on here and even learned a bit on piano to play it.
Got some massive attack, some prodigy, some RATM. All winners
Dude rages whole first album was stupid stupid good, and then wake up was like the perfect finale song for the this movie
The Matrix is a 23 year old movie that can still impress and blow the minds of 1st time viewers.
Imagine how we older folks where blown away when we saw it in theaters when it first came out. It was so ahead of its time both technically and as a concept.
Personally it's my all time fav sci-fi flick.
Jurassic Park and The Matrix do not age. So good!

yeah! I was 30 at the time this came out and remember the line wrapping around the movie theater. It's my favorite movie of all time. It's so deep, in western/eastern philosophy and religions. I'm not going to say what the movie is really about, I think that would ruin it. But it is absolutely a masterpiece.
Amber, one of my *favorite* things about this channel is watching your righteous indignation in the face of evil, especial hypocrisy and betrayal! Your disgust toward Cypher is legendary! 👍

At beginning thought about overnighting a vomit bag to Amber. Like the movie "The Matrix" and the reactions!
The good side-bad side separation is what gives me a great idea for a movie they can watch. No movie I can think of can get you rooting for the "bad guys" like Pulp Fiction. And the music is incredible, too!
Joe Pantoliano always plays a great, weasley scumbag when he's on scumbag duty.
The Matrix influenced so many sci fi movies that came after it, but then nobody had ever seen anything like it
I don't quite agree because dark city came before it and is very similar
Fun fact: the directors were very influenced by the animated film "Ghost in the Shell." There are more than a few similarities.
@@gtpro1504 I was going to say the same thing. Dark City came out a few months earlier and explored a lot of the same themes. Dark City is definitely worth a watch, I actually like it better than The Matrix. It's a real mind f***.

@@gtpro1504 C'mon, I remember when this movie came out and people were shocked by the unique use of cameras and special effects, I remember that. Then after, you saw the slo mo everywhere. Not to mention the actors doing the martial art themselves, etc.
Watched this film a million time and Trinity's 'dodge this' scene still gives me chills the camera angles and the slow motion while he's blown off his feet just looks sick 👌

The fight choreographer for this was Yuen Woo-Ping. He did a lot of work in Hong Kong cinema in the '60s, '70s, and '80s. There are several references to Bruce Lee in the fight scenes, like Neo brushing his nose with his thumb, and the "come at me" gesture with the hand. He also threw in a few references to American and Italian westerns, like the shot angle that sets off the subway fight scene, a copy of one of the scenes from Sergio Leone's "Man with no name" trilogy. Lots of easter eggs in this movie.
I had a deaf co-worker who had a crush on Keanu Reeves and she didn't want to wait till the captioned version came out a month later, so we went to see it opening week. I was blown away by the movie -- she had no idea what was going on (she could read lips having not gone deaf till college, but the actors weren't facing the camera all the time) -- but she loved the visuals. P.S. she stayed at the hotel once where Keanu lived full time in CA and he got on the elevator with her and started speaking to her, but she was so excited her lip-reading skills failed her.

Amber's reactions to the first few scenes and the last few made the whole thing worth it.
Hugo Weaving, who played Agent Smith, also played Elrond (Liv Tyler's character's father) in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Very accomplished actor with a career spanning 40 years.
Would LOVE to see them react to him in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Went and saw this movie in the theater when it came out with a bunch of friends knowing nothing about it going in. It blew all of our minds and ended up sitting in a diner talking about it for hours afterwards. Such a great movie. So many themes and philosophies strewn throughout. One of the few great cerebral action flicks out there.
super ahead-of-its-time with its depiction of AI-human conflict and simulation theory. at first i thought it was just a far-fetched, fun sci-fi thing but the more i read about it, the more realistic and plausible it seems. not in the way of humans being grown, but just the idea that games/simulations can get so real that we won't be able to tell the difference between what's real and what's simulated. i mean just look at racing games now. if you took a screenshot of forza 5 you wouldn't be able to tell if it's a photo or not. whereas 20 years ago, ppl were driving pixelated cars. imagine what it would look like in another 50, 100, 500 years.... and the second point, about AI - that's definitely just a matter of time. right now it's still in its infancy, taking many man hours just to program a piece of AI to do something fluidly. but ppl often don't factor in exponential learning, and assume that they will learn linearly like us. i do think at some point, AI will become self-aware in the network and figure out ways to take over or control us at some point.

Yep, the only time I have as strong a memory of when I was exiting the theater as I have of the theater experience itself.
One of the best happy accidents was the way they dropped the ball promoting this flick. So many of us went in to theaters with just a hint of an idea of what we were getting in to. When we exited... we knew... we digirati... what this film was. That lack of promotion just set the tone.
When my wife and I (then fiance) saw this movie in the theatre when it premiered, we were saw awe struck by it that when we left the theatre, we immediately went back on line to by another ticket for the next show and saw it again. That's how amazing this movie was! And remember, all of the special effects were groundbreaking at that time, this was long before the even more amazing stuff they do now, especially in the MCU films.
I remember exiting the theatre in 1999 on opening night in the heart of London (Leicester Square) with a friend and I think we walked straight into a bar and discussed the movie, the nature of reality and perception until it closed. The movie had such a big impact on me, can't wait for my boys to grow up so I can rewatch it with them.
I've wathed it for the first time in theatre with my mom when I was 9. That's so cool I inloved with this movie being so yaung and then I've beeng descovered something new while growing up and rewatching it again and again... :)
I'm having my first child, a son, on the 25th this month. I cannot wait to show him the movies that shaped me.
Me and my boyfriend at the time were Matrix fiends. We dressed in black black and wore sunglasses everywhere especially at night to parties. All of this was combined with the back drop from the 360 roof top shot, randomly dipping back as if we were The Ones. I cracked up when Amber did it. Remembered just how wild we were about Matrix.

I saw this movie in the cinema when I was 18...imagine what that was like. Masterpiece.
Imagine watching this in the cinema over 20 years ago. The effects, the soundtrack, the whole mind-blowing story... there is a reason why this is such a masterpiece. All of our minds were collectively blown.
Yeah, about the story I was so upset that I didn't get it, I was close to get out of the cinema at the time, but I did stay, and then the pieces fits together, I was absolutely mind-blown, and I don't regret to have stayed.

And the great thing was the trailers gave nothing away. Nobody knew what to expect going in and like you said it blew us all away. I think I saw this like 5 times in the theater.
I went and saw this six times, it was so mind-blowing.
There was nothing like these special effects when this movie first came out and it's cool to see that the matrix still blows peoples' minds over 2 decades later.
The CGI is perfectly woven into plot and doesn't detract from the believability. So many boring movies that have come after, existing just to showcase a constant drone of CGI action, put me to sleep.
Love when a movie comes out that requires completely new special effects techniques to be invented. Especially when the story is good enough that the effects are like a nice enhancement even though not necessarily needed.
The special effects that keep blowing your mind each time you come to a particular scene. The "bullet time" fight where Neo leans back to dodge bullets is iconic in cinema history.
Trinity's bullet time was even quoted in "Shrek" when Fiona fights Robin Hood.
This is still my favorite movie ever. And as mind blowing as it is to see it for the first time, everytime you rewatch it, you still find something new, some little bit of foreshadowing that you didn't pick up on in previous viewings. Such a well made masterpiece.

Truly one of the top sci-fi action movies over the last 30 years that was truly groundbreaking in terms of special effects and what's possible on screen
"Sci-fi", I use that term loosely.
I love Amber not being sure she’ll understand The Matrix and then almost immediately understanding every concept introduced. Good stuff. This movie is one of the best movies ever made. It even made wire work stunts popular in the US after years of only being a common practice in Asian martial arts films. And I love that it’s true love’s kiss that brings Neo back, like a fairy tale. Fun fact: Switch (the one in white) was originally written as a man in the real world and a woman in the Matrix.
What I like is that every sequel makes you realize they never made it out of the Matrix. When Neo gets kissed by Trinity and brings him back to life is another layer of the simulation. When Neo starts having power over the machines, another layer of the Matrix. You realize they never leave the Matrix.

I might be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure I've heard that the Wachowski's wanted Sandra Bullock to play Neo in the real world too.
Except she totally missed the mark. She was left thinking that the message was if you put your mind to it you can accomplish these things as if there are powers maybe humans have that we haven’t unlocked. This is TOTALLY not what’s at work here. What’s going on is that INSIDE THE MATRIX since it’s NOT real & only a simulation so long as you KNOW THAT you can then break rules WITHIN the matrix unplugged outside of the matrix like on the ship and in Zion your just another sack of meat who can’t jump across sky scrapers.
A thing that I really loved about this flick is the higher nerd talk that they just assumed everyone would get and understand
Absolutely groundbreaking movie
The time period this came out cannot really be understood without having been there. On the brink of the internet/digital age, yet still with both feet in the analogue world. And this movie comes out… cutting edge. Truly groundbreaking and generational.
I think everybody who watched this shit back in 1999 got out of the theatre having the experience of a lifetime.
The brink of the digital age was early 90s but if you meant the brink of its rise in popularity you would be right

@@Beezer1742 It's pointless to even try to pin point a certain date or even time span which is the "start" / beginning of the digital age. The Internet was born in the 80s, though not that widely spread. Same goes for computers in general. Nowadays we already have a lot crazy advanced tech around, though a lot is not that widely spread again. It's a constant steady improvement. It always takes time for any tech to get fleshed out first, then it's mass produced, then the price will fall and it spreads. That's how it works with almost any technology. Though "digital age" is a very loose term. Where you draw the line is up to you. I started programming in the 90s and I've seen a lot of change since then. Maybe we haven't seen the greatest invention of this age yet, who knows.
@@Beezer1742 Rise in popularity must not be a term you're common with? Else you'd know what I'm talking about. The advancement of digital technology really started to show in the early 90s what with video game consoles going from 8-bit to 16-bit and the internet becoming a place to use ROMs and talk on forums etc. but its debut into popular culture didn't start until the late 90s when computers had started to become more accessible to the general public and DVD and home stereos with disc trays replaced cumbersome walk-mans and cassettes (though those forms of electronic media still had their place for some time afterwards)

J and Amber, you guys are my absolute favorite couple to watch movies with. You are SO invested in these movies and for those of us who have already watched the movie, can feel the excitement you guys have. It's been four months since this viewing, I'm hoping you are going to watch the next 3 movies. The movies have a depth that many people dismiss or don't understand. Please watch the next movies. Thanks for letting us experience it with you.
One of the greatest movies ever made. So hard to believe the studio originally wanted Will Smith to play Neo. I could never imagine anyone other than Keanu playing him.
And Val Kilmer, who I love dearly otherwise, as Morpheus. Same.
I'm so glad that Will Smith chose to do Wild, Wild West instead.
Partly because I am one of the five people on planet earth who actually enjoys that movie, but mostly because we now have The Matrix in the way we have it... An absolute masterpiece. One of the best and most cinematically important films ever made.
After The Matrix turned out to be a huge success, Will Smith later admitted that turning down the role was the biggest mistake of his career.

I saw this film in theaters with my brother and sister and it blew me away! I loved it!
It made it's TV Debut on HBO in 2001, then the Sci-fi Channel in 2007, as well as AMC in 2009, and BBC America in 2011.
My older brother took me to see this in the theater and you’re right, it was mind-blowing. One of the top theater memories.

What is REALLY cool about this is you both probably have seen so many references over the years (both knowingly and unknowingly) and now you will start to see them everywhere! So fun! 😆

- The song that was playing over the last moments into the credits was "Wake Up" by Rage Against The Machine, one of their best.
- The Wachowskis are very philosophical filmmakers. They required Keanu Reeves to read three books: 'Out of Control' by Kevin Kelly, 'Introducing Evolutionary Psychology', and 'Simulacra and Simulation' by Jean Baudrillard (which was the book that Keanu opened with all of the computer disks). The amount of philosophers that the filmmakers drew from in this story is impressive.
- Keanu, Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus), Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity), and Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith) all went through six months of training with Hong Kong martial arts choreographer Yuen-Wo Ping, learning how to do the fights and the wire work to do the more outrageous in-camera stunts. Keanu was recuperating from spinal fusion surgery at the time, which is why he doesn't do many kicks as opposed to the other leads.
- The next two films, 'The Matrix: Reloaded' and 'The Matrix: Revolutions' were filmed together. Basically, some people hate them, some people love them...I love them. They take everything from the first film and turn it upside down and inside out...and then do it again with last year's 'The Matrix: Resurrections'. They are very complex, especially towards the end of the second one.
- At the time of filming The Wachowskis were The Wachowski Brothers...they are both trans, and now are Lana (formerly Larry) and Lilly (formerly Andy). Lana directed 'Resurrections' by herself, with Lilly's blessing...but when they made the first three, they were still male-identified. I state all this about Lana and Lilly because one of you said, "I hate the way he talks" about Agent Smith. Hugo Weaving played his role speaking in the same cadence as Lana and Lilly used to in the 1990s and early 2000s. For proof, there are full-length documentaries about the making of the first three films, and the footage of them speaking is kinda funny...it's like Agent Smith. Stilted, robotic, and measured...not so much anymore.
- For more background on the real world, the Wachowskis created an anthology of anime shorts called 'The Animatrix', several are really informative especially 'The Second Renaissance, Parts 1 & 2' and 'The Final Flight of the Osiris' which takes place just before 'Reloaded'.
This series is just behind 'Star Wars' as my favorite film series of all time. Thanks for doing this one.

Y’all are so much fun to watch movies with! And I love how lately you’re giving the movies you watch time to breathe a little in your UA-cam videos, by keeping them a little longer than average at around 40-55 minutes rather than 20-35 like I usually see. It makes your videos seem a bit more like actually sitting in your living room or in a private theater with you and listening to you talk to each other during the movie. It makes for a different dynamic than the usual. Y’all are absolutely killing it with this channel; RESPECT.

I love that everyone thinks the Oracle told Neo he wasn't The One, but when they think back afterwards they realize HE said, "I'm not The One" with some relief and she shook her head and said, "Sorry, kid."
And he assumed she was agreeing with him, as does the audience.
Sooooo well written!
Technically she said "Sorry kid", "You've got the gift", "You're waiting for something" and "I hate giving good people bad news". She may not have said he wasn't The One in words, but she was expressing he's not fully committed. I always took it as, if she told him he's the one there's a chance he doesn't believe it, that's why Morpheus didn't have him 100% convinced. That's why she gives him a cookie and said "You'll remember you don't believe in this fate crap". She knew he was fighting this incredible responsibility and allowing him the choice to save Morpheus would force him to commit and embrace his power. And that's why Morpheus says, "She told you exactly what you needed to hear. That's all." She can see all the future possibilities and what might motivate Neo to unlock his potential. That's why she's so incredibly wise.
I really liked that actress. I was impressed with her memorable performance.
There's also another fan-theory that Agent Smith is the One. In some ways that theory makes sense too, but regardless which theory one believes, this movie is absolutely genius.

She also said he knew what she was going to say, knowing full well he didn't. She may not have lied technically, but she deliberately misled him.
Also... Everyone always forgets that before that she says, "Being The One is like being in love. No one can tell you you are, you just know it."

When this movie first came out, there were no extensive previews. We all went into the theater not knowing what to expect. Just word of mouth that you HAD to see The Matrix. So it was a joy watching y’all react much the way my friends and I did. And Jay, that track is Wake Up by Rage Against the Machine. If you like heavy riffs, check out more Rage. They are rifftastic.
After seeing a short teaser on TV I decided to attend a sneak preview in my city.
It was the highest admission fee I ever paid for a movie. And I never regretted it.
The first bullet-time scene with Trinity's kick got instant applause from the whole audience.
That camera action had never been seen before, but got copied & spoofed a lot afterwards.
And after half an hour when the first reveal came, I knew I had chosen the right movie.
It's now my all-time favorite together with "Blade Runner" and the original Anime "Ghost In The Shell".
And the majority of the Ads were just:

in the green font from the movie.

Yeah I remember the trailers were super cryptic. But everything you saw in the trailer made you feel "This is the future of sci-fi" it took me a few watched to understand what was going on haha
This movie was ahead of it's time. I remember when Trinity floated mid air doing the crane and everybody in the cinema went 😮. That was the first time I've seen(probably everybody in the cinema) anything like it before. 360 degree view, the first of it's kind at the time. Simply awesome. Then everybody started copying and it wasn't as special anymore. The Matrix will always be remembered as the movie that revolutionized special effects.
That scene got applause from the whole theater in the screening I went to.
There were a few effects before done with still photos morphed together to give a 360° camera illusion, basically the predecessor to the camera rig John Gaeta built for this movie.
The music video "Underwater Love" by Smoke City and the movie remake of "Lost in Space" (1998) each had such a scene in it.
But never did the camera move like in bullet-time before.

This movie is so deep on so many levels almost prophetic in it's storyline
The reason I love this movie is because it doesn't just have a plot, it has a whole theme built around it. After being disappointed by movies like Rise of Skywalker which barely had a plot, it makes thematic movies like the Matrix even more special.
It was originally supposed to be about humans being cloud computing power instead of batteries which makes more sense but audiences wouldn’t have understood

The part when he stops the bullets at the end gives me chills every time I see it. Just like Morpheus says earlier when Neo asks if he can dodge bullets. “No, Neo. I’m trying to tell you that when you’re ready…you won’t have to.”

@@JohnnyZenith dude same, I saw phantom menace the same week being a massive star wars fan and thought it was OK then literally a day later I went cinema again to see the matrix to an empty cinema no one was there. Was not expecting much, came out thinking it was the greatest movie I'd ever seen. I remember my dad saying I bet you didn't enjoy it as much as phantom menace and I remember saying it wasnt even a contest and the matrix was the new stars wars in respects to the film totally changing the game like the original starwars did.
I watched it three times in theaters. Being in tech support and having friends just as nerdy, we saw it as a homage to our culture and in general, a genre we liked - cyberpunk, which this is. We came out of that movie mind-blown.
And it's no irony I think that Keanu Reeves starred in this movie, Johnny Mnenomic and Cyberpunk 2077 (video game). He is made for that genre.
I saw *Star Wars: Phantom Menace* on opening day and sat front-row: center. I was captain of the theater!
Terrible movie, wonderful experience! So many great fans riding behind me! It was like I was piloting every ship they showed!

This movie introduced many Americans to the brilliance that is Hugo Weaving, who played Agent Smith. Another action movie based on a graphic novel, along the lines of 300, is "V for Vendetta" has Hugo Weaving and is such a mindblowing and powerful story!
Was hard watching Lord of the Rings , with him as Elrond .. Each time he spoke.. you had folks in the theater hollering out "Mr Anderson" 🤣
Hell yeah. V for Vendetta is brilliant and Hugo Weaving is one of the most underrated actors.
I was turning 19 the year this came out. I went to watch it at the cinema for a week straight, no joke, every night for an entire week. This was the next pinnacle in filmmaking since Terminator 2.

Fun Fact: they lady they stole (and later had to pay a settlement) from had such a thorough script that studios made both Terminator and Matrix films. This is why concepts are very similar between the two franchises.

I like to think of the Terminator as a prequel to the Matrix. Morpheus said they don't know exactly when the war started but he knows that we celebrated the creation of A.I. and then somebody struck first.
And…..now it’s a reality 😑

The movie is a nonstop goosebumps journey. My hair still rises at the incredible direction and production values. The writing is never predictable and you never know where it's going. That first dojo alone teaches us so much about the Matrix. The iconic lines. The iconic imagery. It never ceases to impress.
The "dodge this" shot is one of my favourites in cinema history

Seeing the range of emotions upon your faces, especially Amber, like from 30:13 to 30:21, with the "light him up, light him up" through gritted teeth just got me chuckling. Why? Laurence Fishburne is such a brilliant actor; one of his best performances is in the 1990 movie "King of New York", with Christopher Walken and Wesley Snipes.
The Oracle is one of my favorite characters of all time. You hear the name 'the Oracle' and think of some kind of soupy mystic but she's actually more like someone's cool grandma who clowns on Neo and pretends she doesn't actually know the plot of the whole movies. You can't just tell someone to 'just believe in urself bro' and the Oracle, knowing this, told him wasn't The One, and sent him off on a little quest so he might learn it for himself the same way she made him knock over the vase. We all need to go on a little adventure to learn to bend our perception of ourselves and the world before we can bend the spoon.
The Oracle never actually told Neo that he wasn't the One. She said, "You know the answer." It was Neo who said that he wasn't. At that time he didn't believe. She knew he had to find the truth himself.

The brilliant thing about it is; if she told him he was The One, would he end up being The One? Probably not. Maybe she told him what he needed to hear as Morpheus alluded to.
Watching your reactions to this just reminds me of how we reacted back in 1999 in the theaters. This broke new ground in special effects. Our jaws dropped to the floor at the first fight and stayed there for the whole movie :D

What I always loved about this movie was that this concept is thousands of years old. Plato’s Allegory of the Cave is the premises where no one can be told what the matrix is, they wouldn’t believe you just as if shadows on a cave wall was there only known reality how could you describe the “real” world. Beautiful.
So few people know of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, relatively speaking, it's pretty cool to run across someone who does in the comments. Ancient wisdom and understanding, yet, we are no wiser than today than the ancients.

"The Matrix" was a groundbreaking moment in cinema and changed how movies were made from then on. It's the perfect movie to lead up to the 21st century. When it came out in the spring of 1999 no one had any idea just how huge "The Matrix" would be and it became one of Keanu Reeve's most memorable roles. Another good 90's action movie I would recommend for your movie channel is "Speed", which also stars Keanu Reeves and made Sandra Bullock a star.
This documentary is a must-see for all 🙌

Omg it's crazy that you've never seen this film. It was groundbreaking and iconic in the sci-fi world nothing had been made like it before it. This movie is what brought Keanu Reeves to the forefront as an actor. I hope you truly enjoy the trilogy altogether it is intense and very intricate with the information so you may have to watch it a few times altogether to get every little dynamic of it but you will not be sorry. Even better was not getting spoilers before the movie. The question "what is the Matrix" was something we went into the theater to get an answer to because there was nowhere else to get it.
It was mind bending man. We walked out in the middle of the night on a week day. No traffic, just a page of news paper shifting in the wind. The world didn't even feel real.
I must have seen this in the theatre 12 times in the first few months. So, so good!

Fun fact.... this movie was filmed in Sydney, Australia where I am from. The bridge he was under when he got in the car and had the bug removed from his belly is outside Central Station and I used to walk past it everyday on my way to work. :)
For me, watching you two react is as close as I can ever get to seeing a film for the first time again. This reaction was everything I could have hoped for! I'm more of an appreciator than a critic when it comes to movies, so I loved, even needed the remaining films in the trilogy. Here's hoping you react to them soon, honeybuns!

The sequels are good but don't hold up as well IMO.
Too much focus on things that didn't really add to the story, but satisfied the Wachowskis.
The Matrix is a trilogy. Just as the first three Star Wars were a trilogy. No matter how many dozens more they might make.
Any new Matrix will be part of a new set.
I loved your reaction! Just to clarify why the Oracle said Neo wasn't the one, at the time of his visit he wasn't the one...he didn't believe. He was still second guessing himself. The oracle said "maybe in another life". Meaning he had to die to become the one.
As I recall, the Oracle never actually said he was not The One. He said he was not The One and she went along with it. BTW, Neo is an anagram for One. See all the cool details that were put into this movie. Fans can debate the implications forever.

Hugo Weaving as the lead agent absolutely KILLED IT my favourite character in the movie. His Niece Samara Weaving has been acting for a few years now (Ready or Not) (The Babysitter) and it must run in the family as she is an incredible actor!
I still rock this soundtrack to this day. Glad to see this movie is still blowing minds like it did in 1999.
