I watched this as a teenager back in 2016 viewing my dad as a ruler and tyrant. I hated my parents so much back then, and thought I knew better and I would ultimately be better than them. This video meant nothing to me back then. Now at 22 years old, I finally understand what they were trying to get at. For those who are still at the early stages of life, you may not understand fully how much your dad cares for you, but know that one day you will.
Not for everyone. I saw my parents as rulers and tyrants as a teenager and I'm 19 now and haven't spoken to either in over two years. Dad SA Mum, who in turn beat me and my sisters. Dad also hit us, though not as often. And they both demanded an unrealistic level of submission from us. I was called a slave as a 9 year old. I was called rebellious as a teenager for simply demanding human rights like literally food and shelter. And that stuck with me for a long time, because everyone believed them even though they could see with their own eyes that I was a massive stickler for the rules and far too terrified of them to engage in normal developmental stages of childhood. So now I'm in my late teens trying to take care of myself and interact with other adults whilst trying to learn the fundamentals that were beaten out of me as a kid. Like, "It's ok to say no" and "You don't have to apologize for having a different opinion" and "You can walk away without getting into trouble." And meanwhile, my sisters are still stuck at home and child protection, whom I've talked to on their behalf, won't do a damn thing. And they don't have anyone else, because they're homeschooled solely to isolate them. I'm working 30 hours a week cleaning, starting my third and final year of uni next year, too poor to afford food half the time, and definitely can't afford the trauma based therapy I desperately need and that my sisters desperately need, and all my spare time I spend trying to raise awareness about the appalling lack of protection of children and accountability for child abusers in my country. I could go on, honestly. This is the tip of the iceberg. I don't doubt that your parents are great and good for you that you have a good relationship with them. But please don't generalize that ALL young people will one day realize their parents just want what's best for them. Because more parents than you think do not and never will. When I was a kid I could never understand how my father was able to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night without turning on the lights. I never knew how on earth he could stomach coffee, beer or the music he listened to. How could he stay up so late? How could he cook more than one thing at once!? Now I stay up late with the lights out, drink coffee, beer and listen to the same music he did. I'm still shit at cooking though.
LOL My father drove my me and my friends to the beach once when I was a teenager...it was my 15th birthday, When we got there, after my guy friends waxed their surfboards, he asked to borrow one before he left. We were like, "wha...?" Then, to my surprise, he paddled out and ended up surfing wave after wave on my friend's longboard. When he got in, my friends were cheering. I told him I never knew he could surf..he just looked at me and said, "there's a lot of things I did that I don't do now," with a laugh. He gave me a kiss and hug. When I got home that night, he and my mom were watching tv. I walked into my room, and saw a stack of something he left on my bed. I walked over to see all his old albums on my bed from The Beatles, The Grateful Dead (there was a pressed pot leaf in the inside cover he forgot about that I left there to this day!), The Doors, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Led Zeppelin I,II, III, & Zoso, etc. The note just said, "Happy Birthday."
AnnaElisavetta Vonnedozza That's one awesome father right there! Something similar happened with my grandfather who died less than a year ago of cancer. While he was getting weaker, we had to spend mostly the entire day with him, and while we talked, we started to find out about things he did before we were born with my siblings. We all knew he worked at a bank and had a high position in it, but we never knew that he played basketball, soccer, raced and was part of the administration of a soccer team. After we found out all of that, we had topic to talk for literally the rest of his life. When I found out about all he did, I feel like I'm wasting my life!
This one made me cry a little bit at the end, as you grow older you realize your parents are the only true thing you have in this chaotic world, appreciate them and let them know you do
But actually , the dad changes a lot too in those 3 first parts. going from a guy in his mid to late 20s to hitting a midlife crisis and all isnt that easy you know
I am currently at the Tyrant stage. And will likely be staying at the Tyrant stage for years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years to come
even if your dad might seem to be cold hearted, you should say that just to get it out of there. Just keep it short and clean, bc he sounds like a business man. Wish you luck!
Yep, except the clown, this is exactly my dad. Mostly hated the dictator phase but as I grew up and started to face my own problems, only then did I realise the importance of things he did for me. He was sick and worked through it, hated his job but still continued to do it and most importantly sacrificed A LOT of things and gave up on his dreams and free time to make life easier for me. Can't imagine one day losing my parents and that makes me really sad! 😔
I’m you a little further down the road…. I do miss my parents and even my in-laws. Enjoy them while you have them and cherish them when they’re gone. We’ve got this, but when your grandkids need diaper changes you can say no 😎
I've never seen my dad anything negative, he's a better man than me and he passed away just a week ago. Do yourself a favor, call your dad right now if you're away from him. And if you're close, just go hug him and thank him for everything.
You guys are lucky, I always wished my parents had been like that. Instead I got people who think vaccines cause autism, psychiatrists are evil, and physical and emotional abuse are the best methods of child-rearing
Oma Rumunna Yeah I know right. When he comes home late at night smelling bad and then you like black out. You wake up the next morning feeling all sore and tired. with your dad next to you. Yeah, real scary that time.
Yeah when he comes home, drunk and starts making fun of you! And then he starts hitting you! And even if you're 14 you start to hit I'm back! Then you have a little fight while your sister and mother are crying until he takes a knife and tries to stab you but you're lucky because of your mom and sis!
When this was on UA-cam I was at the “my dad is a dictator” age, now I’ve been working for a few years and he is counting days before retirement. Last week I went back to my parents’ place and we were talking about a big national-wide protest back in the 80’s. He said he was in it too, he even led the students of his class and designed the slogans and signs. For 26 years he has never spoken about it, I feel like I know so little about him, it is kinda hard for me to connect my a bit stubborn and old-schooled dad to that aggressive and passionate student leader in a protest. I should really start knowing my father. My childhood hero and my best friend.
I remember my farther once told me when I was a teenager.. "Son, everyone in this world wants something from you in return except your parents, they give you everything and ask for nothing, and if they do it will be for your own good". R.I.P dad, I wish that I'm now half the man you were... my hero.
No.. wrong.. Six Ways You'll See Your (Asian) Dad: 1. Son are you a doctor yet? 2. Son are you a doctor yet? 3. Son are you a doctor yet? 4. Son are you a doctor yet? 5. Son are you a doctor yet? 6. Why are you not a doctor yet????!!!
Not always, some people in Asia MOTHERS work the most than the husbands, cos they are too lazy to do shit and show off that they were "that type of person" or "they could've become someone" and talk bullshit. So that's why Asian parents fight all the time cos of this issue cos mother's are right but husbands don't want to lose the fight.
Tbh honest theres is a meme that goes: when you older you understand why your dad was always grumpy and would fall aslept watching tv in the middle of the day
I love my dad. He always does the best he can for my mother and me and he still finds time to talk to me about important things in life even when he's dead tired. To everyone out there: Don't take your father for granted.
I wish I could give your comment two upvotes. My dad was, over my years growing up, all the things in this video and more. It's been six years since he passed away, and I still think of him every day.
I never got to expierience what's like having a real father. To me he is just some guy that doesn't have any interesst in me whatsoever. But sure sounds cool having a dad.
I'm sorry for what you had to go through. People in the world can be so cruel and heartless. It takes a REAL man to have a child with a woman and stick through. 'Men' who get women pregnant and then leave her alone to raise them by herself are no better than dust.
SuperSonic1ify My dad's great, He was only one phase in the video for me (the tyrant a couple years ago), then he became the primary source of wisdom, advice and knowledge.
eh I only seen the first one. He died when I was 7 y/o. I did not get to see the other dads! Thank you my superman. You raised a good boy I promise dad! :)
UGH I get thatd suck but its so god damn annoying go talk to someone about it or just say "I don't have my dad anymore but I love him" or something god damn dude, really a trigger of mine
My dad passed away when I was younger and this really is the kinds of things I notice about my memories of him and this was just awesome to see. Thanks for making this video.
While at Uni, my pop was the body guard. Every time I got into trouble he told me exactly what to do and it worked like every single time. Reminds me of a great quote about dads, “a great dad doesn’t prevent you from falling, but helps up you up when you do fall”
I miss my dad. I miss my dad so so much. I would do anything in the world to get my dad back again. We argued all the time and I never truly realized how great of a man he was until he had passed away. I wish I could have just 60 seconds to see him again, hug him and tell him I love him and I always have.
The ways I saw my dad as a child: The guy who knew how to clean everything Fix everything Perform surgery on electronic devices And we still love him as much as he loves us.
My father is a monster. He took 29 years of my life, years upon years of my labor, and tens of thousands of dollars of my money. It's heartbreaking, yet somehow validating to see what a father should be.
That sounds a very healthy relationship. But most don't socilise with their parents unless for important things or just want to say a few words there and here. "how's school?" "Great" "If you got homework do it" That relationships fine too. :D As long as you are not rude or over step the child to parent line, like slaming doors and shouting.
Genos Demon Cyborg Well first off i just want to say i'm not like a loser with no friends i actual have a lot of friends, my dads just a really funny and cool ass person
Well actually baldness comes from your mother’s side of the family, so if your mother’s father or brothers are bald or someone else then you will most likely also go bald. Although there are always exceptions so........... all I can say is good luck.
I think I almost cried in that last archetype when you pointed out how a dad is really just... another person like you or me. He used to be much like us. Had dreams, struggles, and failures, even times of extreme waiting for that train that never arrived.
In balkans, you're gonna see your dad while: -He's holding a shoe -He's holding a belt -He's holding a telephone cable -He's holding a stick -He's holding nothing
i saw my dad every way, lol now that im older (still in my 20's) i understand he has reason behind his caos, idk it fully yet but ik hes smarter then me
I was 16 when this came out ! and I loved it back then, and wow, it's just crazy to watch it again 10 years later and identify with it as hard as the first time. anyway, thanks for creating this. we're human. we're real.
My dad was and still is all six of these to me at once: A superhero when he tries something daring like eating tinned octopus. A clown when he makes really odd or overly perverted jokes. A tyrant when he threatens to throw water on me if I don't get up "NOW". A (technical) suit when he's running around tired but doing important chores. A bodyguard when he jumps in the middle of fights to save my sister and/or I. Me when we sit down and enjoy the same stuff together and can predict semi-accurately what the other person's thinking, going to say, finds amusing, etc despite the 29-year gap and us being of different genders. He's the parent I'm most compared to and despite his own individual (and understandable) flaws, my dad is awesome.
pretty accurate. except instead of the superhero my dad seemed more like a big hairy giant when I was small. and also the clown seemed to pop out ocassionally during the tyrant phase(don't ask me how) and now too.
I saw this video years ago when it came out and thought it was cool, now i'm grown, and gone through all these stages, and this video just hits so differently. College humor was so great, and this video is really amazing

"Of all the things you considered your dad, a person was never one of them." damn, this is well said.

Lost my dad last year. This reminded me of him.
Miss ya dad
I only now realized that the versions of Dads are actually how differently aged kids see their dad
LOL. Thats why CH used to be brilliant. Miss them.

But actually , the dad changes a lot too in those 3 first parts. going from a guy in his mid to late 20s to hitting a midlife crisis and all isnt that easy you know

I am currently at the Tyrant stage. And will likely be staying at the Tyrant stage for years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years to come
I haven't said 'I love you' to my Dad since I was 4 years old.. Now hes currently on a business trip. When he gets back, i'll be sure to show my love.
Good on you huey
I told my father that I love him more than I can count, now that he's gone I wish that I told him more. go for it bro. and kiss this strong pillar.
I haven't said those words to my parents for...................how long?
MrHungryTrooper won't lose a thing, say it cos you want to hear it one day.
even if your dad might seem to be cold hearted, you should say that just to get it out of there. Just keep it short and clean, bc he sounds like a business man. Wish you luck!
Six Ways I Saw My Dad
1) i didn't
Lo Riddell Hah.
Are you black?
Last First fuckin racist
:(
Yep, except the clown, this is exactly my dad.
I won the lottery for parents. My dad is my mentor and my best friend.
IamCaptainMan Congratulations (can you send some money matey? LOL)
actually tho hmu
IamCaptainMan saaame
You guys are lucky, I always wished my parents had been like that. Instead I got people who think vaccines cause autism, psychiatrists are evil, and physical and emotional abuse are the best methods of child-rearing
this is so true but I also saw my Dad as a monster at one point.
Then you have a little fight while your sister and mother are crying until he takes a knife and tries to stab you but you're lucky because of your mom and sis!
you ok there buddy........
@@TheSaad502 today I'm okay but when I was 14 I wasn't
dude im 21 and my dad still drinks like that. btw I'm still living here. i've dealt with it, I'm fine man
When this was on UA-cam I was at the “my dad is a dictator” age, now I’ve been working for a few years and he is counting days before retirement.
R.I.P dad, I wish that I'm now half the man you were... my hero.
This makes me cry my god

Not always, some people in Asia MOTHERS work the most than the husbands, cos they are too lazy to do shit and show off that they were "that type of person" or "they could've become someone" and talk bullshit. So that's why Asian parents fight all the time cos of this issue cos mother's are right but husbands don't want to lose the fight.
Shed a tear at the end, that was spot on
"He's you."
Ah yes, the anger issues makes sense innit
Tbh honest theres is a meme that goes: when you older you understand why your dad was always grumpy and would fall aslept watching tv in the middle of the day
I love my dad. He always does the best he can for my mother and me and he still finds time to talk to me about important things in life even when he's dead tired. To everyone out there:
Don't take your father for granted.
I wish I could give your comment two upvotes. My dad was, over my years growing up, all the things in this video and more. It's been six years since he passed away, and I still think of him every day.
Good. Never forget him. He'll always be with you. And thanks for the consideration.
Goddamnit I came to laugh not feel
Same here - lost my superhero at 10.
UGH I get thatd suck but its so god damn annoying go talk to someone about it or just say "I don't have my dad anymore but I love him" or something god damn dude, really a trigger of mine
My dad died to but I hated him
Holy s=%t that was beutiful.
I can't watch these parent related videos. Haven't seen my parents for nearly a year. I don't wanna get homesick.
cool story bro...
Oh man, you're so cool.
hunterkiller1440 Fell for you, my parents split up, but are still friends. I am lucky that happened, it would suck if they just fought.
Colby Staples*Feel
Colby Staples Congratulations. Your family life sucks significantly less than mine right now.
I miss my dad. I miss my dad so so much. I would do anything in the world to get my dad back again. We argued all the time and I never truly realized how great of a man he was until he had passed away. I wish I could have just 60 seconds to see him again, hug him and tell him I love him and I always have.
Haha, My dad was none of these. He was the "I am insecure about a lot of things, so I must shout at everyone for no reason"-dad.
You wanna talk?
Mine is the "Everyone is wrong, i am right, not my fault" and he pokes at people past wrong doing
@Coder boi bruh
@tackington saaaaaaame
That's the tyrant.
“He’s you. “ as i get older and understand life the truer that statement becomes.
Ah, I love these old videos.
They were funny, clever, insightful.
The good ole days.
Almost a haiku
Josh Ruben
True, everything was more positive and kinder and reasonable back then.
The ending was so true
The ways I saw my dad as a child:
The guy who knew how to clean everything
Fix everything
Perform surgery on electronic devices
And we still love him as much as he loves us.
My father is a monster. He took 29 years of my life, years upon years of my labor, and tens of thousands of dollars of my money.
It's heartbreaking, yet somehow validating to see what a father should be.
Same
Maybe this is strange but my dad is more like a friend than an actual dad to me
same
That sounds a very healthy relationship. But most don't socilise with their parents unless for important things or just want to say a few words there and here. "how's school?"
"Great"
"If you got homework do it"
That relationships fine too. :D
As long as you are not rude or over step the child to parent line, like slaming doors and shouting.
Genos Demon Cyborg Well first off i just want to say i'm not like a loser with no friends i actual have a lot of friends, my dads just a really funny and cool ass person
What is up my dude that's a good thing
What is up my dude the president actually gets payed a 400,000 salary and gets a 50,000 non taxable expense account
I’d prefer if my father and I weren’t the same, thank you. I love him, but I also love having hair.
then cherish it while it lasts
Well actually baldness comes from your mother’s side of the family, so if your mother’s father or brothers are bald or someone else then you will most likely also go bald. Although there are always exceptions so........... all I can say is good luck.
um...I've got some bad news for you brah
Both side of the family has a full set of hair even that late 80s but somehow my brother is the only one of us who is going bald so loving it
Nunyah Busy ness It actually comes from both sides of the family
I think I almost cried in that last archetype when you pointed out how a dad is really just... another person like you or me. He used to be much like us. Had dreams, struggles, and failures, even times of extreme waiting for that train that never arrived.
Never got to see my dad during the Suit or Body guard phases, but from the time I knew him, he was alright guy.
Miss ya, Dad. Rest in Peace.
Aw, this was so sweet!!!

In balkans, you're gonna see your dad while:
-He's holding a shoe
-He's holding a belt
-He's holding a telephone cable
-He's holding a stick
-He's holding nothing
That is how everyone here was raised. These days its getting phased out and children are becoming bratty.

I first watched this like 6 years ago, it still makes me cry every time
Almost 13 years ago, and still hits me hard.
You know even though how funny this was you have to agree at the end this has touched your heart just a little bit.
i saw my dad every way, lol now that im older (still in my 20's) i understand he has reason behind his caos, idk it fully yet but ik hes smarter then me
After all the terrible things I've done to my poor Dad, I'm now scared to have kids of my own.
On "The Tyrant" he looked like a Goth version of Peeta Mellark from Hunger Games. Strange.
So I'm not the only one who noticed :D
+WolfArtist666 he looks like a member of green day
+WolfArtist666 Only with a personality!
Almost 22 and I still see my dad as The Superhero. Lucky kid I am.
That's so...... touching

Plz help dafuq is my dad
I was 16 when this came out ! and I loved it back then, and wow, it's just crazy to watch it again 10 years later and identify with it as hard as the first time. anyway, thanks for creating this. we're human. we're real.
This was the best The Six video you guys have made. Hits real deep in a good way.
***** Did Luke send you here?
My dad was and still is all six of these to me at once:
A superhero when he tries something daring like eating tinned octopus.
Sure but I haven't seen my Dad since he went out to buy cigarettes.
Really?? That's tough man
We're all with u... Hang in there dude
Ouch....we’re sorry...
my dad hasn't brought my milk yet
Lol
“he’s you” hit me so hard
I also want to say that my dad has been on the superhero stage for 19 years... Honestly my hero and nobody can replace him.
pretty accurate. except instead of the superhero my dad seemed more like a big hairy giant when I was small. and also the clown seemed to pop out ocassionally during the tyrant phase(don't ask me how) and now too.
backspace 0 Same except for the big hairy giant part. When I was a kid I saw him as this badass dude.
