Hello Edd! Thanks for this video. In the past 20 years I've been using Fertan to convert corrosion. After ~ 24 - 48 hours I remove the excess of the converter using water and a sponge. After the parts are dry I apply another layer of Fertan which I let impact for at least another 24 hours. Afterwards I remove the excess of the 2nd layer of the converter with water and a sponge. After drying I treat the spots with isopropyl alcohol to ensure a clean and free from grease surface. Next step primer and paint (+ additional protective coating if necessary e.g. if on underbody). I also use rust converter regarding before mentioned strategy on parts that are not looking corroded, e.g. if I weld in some new piece of metal to chassis or underbody of a car. That's cause I've discovered when grinding down the welds that there's often small rust-particles on the grinding equipment, which are getting rubbed into the surface of the metal by the grinding equipment itself. Therefore I always use a rust-converter even on such spots before painting. Of course coating a weld with tin is cool and oldschool kinda treatment, sadly not always possible. I can only recommend filling the tank with screws or stones at the beginning .. (approx. 1/3 of the volume ..) and then clamping the tank on a concrete mixer for some time. preferably dry so that you can vacuum out afterwards. I did that to my motocycle tank and it worked good. a chemical treatment afterwards would be good as well
I've done that as well. But instead of a mixer I jacked up the driven wheel of a car Strapped the tank to the wheel, and then left the car running for half an hour. Worked a treat.
Omg this takes me back to the first few series of wheeler dealers, when it was quaint, honest and interesting. I remember watching the Austin mini episode in season 1, and then a few years later getting a classic mini as my first car and watching the episode over and again trying to copy bits of Ed’s restoration. That was something like 15 years ago…. So watching this is sort of like a trip down memory lane! Thanks Ed.
Love it Edd. I'm doing a degree in Electronics Engineering and that is the most concise and most helpful explanation of electrical current in DC circuits that I have ever heard. Keep it up Edd, you're show is a highlight of my viewing week!
As much as I love Edd's work overall, this was the best episode by far from the knowledgeable electricity showdown to the satisfying rust removal. Cheers
Screws, nuts and Bolts, than strap it at the front of an concrete mixer. Enough power and endurance , keep ist Spinning for a while ♥️👍 greetings from Germany
I've had this issue my self, and after many hours of using different products I used a 1mm slitting disk to cut the tank in half, got inside with a wire wheel, treated with rust cure and welded back together took around 4 hours to complete and had much better results than relying on the chemical formula to do all the hard work
I love watching each episode bringing the range rover back to life. And also seeing how to bring components back from a disastrous state to workable piece.
Agreed! he did say at the beginning, that a brand new tank costs £140 .. now add up the price of all the materials he used to restore this "turd" , from paint to rust remover to screws, nuts and washers to elbow grease and what not .. I don't believe a single penny has been saved that day. .. but then again, all in the name of science and content creation I guess 😏
@@fizmo100 That's precisely the point. Not every viewer abroad can easily access a new tank. But those who point out no money was saved (taking into account it's not become a new tank) are equally correct.
Nice VID, THX! I once saw a video with a rusty motorcycle tank on UA-cam. The colleague had simply taken small stones from the hardware store, filled the tank with water and these stones. Then the tank was sealed all over and clamped onto the concrete mixer drum. After turning for a while, the inside of the tank was sparkling clean!
great demonstration for amps and volts. I have seen a Fuel Tank attached to a cement mixer and ball bearings placed inside. As the electric Cement Mixer spins, it keeps the fluid moving and the ball bearings impacting the rust. 24 hours spinning and the tank looks like new on the inside. -quite separately- My old step father used a fuel tank primer (internal) with chromium on his 72 VW Camper, which is normally used in the aerospace industry. we pulled it out of the camper and 1 quart was enough to coat the inside once we kept flipping it and spinning it. If the tank is separated from the vehicle and you block all access to the ports, the tank can be shaken in waste deep water to help take the weight of the tank. also Rolling it upside down and on its sides helps make sure the primer, or in this case the rust eater is constantly coating the internals. the Nuts washers and Screws idea are a good idea.
@@Scorchzzz the cost of chemicals plus labour would easily exceed the £140 for a new tank it's a false economy also the state of tank would mean that potentially you'd have fuel pump lines injectors clogging up
Good to see options and enjoyable to watch, but that’s 15 litres of chemical that needs disposing / recycling of ! Best option was to replace and then only a steel tank to recycle 👍
@@michaelcolgan3182 yeah a new tank was £140 I'm sure he spend that in materials not including labour plus with the tank in that bad of a shape you always have the risk of clogging up fuel pump lines injectors just a false economy really

Great video as ever. The amount of rust in that tank was frightening! Had you considered electrolysis rather than chemical removal? I've seen excellent results on motorcycle fuel tanks with worse corrosion than the Range Rover's.
Well Mike eat your heart out, it's not not about how much profit you can make it's about the knowledge and work. Very informative presentation on electricity to enable a layman to understand it.
An easy electricity analogy is to think of current as being like mass and voltage to be like speed. If you get hit by a flea doing 70mph it might sting a little but no harm done. If you get hit by a 46 tonne HGV at 5 mph you will really know about it.
Great vid. I’m getting the rust out of a CX motorcycle tank at the moment,by using white vinegar and gravel. I filled the tank with both, wrapped it in an old quilt, then put in into a cement mixer for half an hour. Came out pretty good once I emptied it and dried it out with a heat gun!👍🏾🛠🏍
I’m a bit late in commenting on your video, but I cleaned my motorcycle tank using very strong vinegar, hanging basket type chain and a cement mixer. Lot less Labour intense and unbelievable results the tank was like new!!
A couple bags of marbles, and a gallon of kerosene. Then shake the hell out of it in every direction and rinse repeat , repeat, repeat, has worked for me.
@Forever Computing US = gallon UK = liter The US is the only country in the world (with the exception of some tiny nations) that uses the Imperial system. Why? Because it's 'Merica, we do everything backwards here just to spite the world. (Meant facetiously)
@@dantheman7370 But in my opinion, spray painting will never have the longevity and durability of a proper 2K system. If the right primer such as 2K anti-corrosion epoxy is not used, the first signs of corrosion may appear very soon. Especially in rainy Britain on an off-road car.
Definetly one of my favorite Episodes. The level of DIY / fiddeling here is great! Great idea to use the cement mixer to clean that fuel tank! #milwaukeechristmas
You are welcome for the comment, Edd. Please continue the great content. I like how you sometimes play around with mixing the sound and doing some neat tricks with it. Good work!
Only way sandblasting would work is if you cut the fuel tank in half to open it up and then weld both half's back together and hope there is no leaks. Fuel tanks are not made to come apart after they are made. Either you do something similar to what Mr. China is doing or get a used fuel tank that is in better condition or buy a new fuel tank.

Great explaination of electricity and its dangers (love the river analogy!). During my training in the RAF we learnt the mantra 'lethal Voltage is defined as 30VDC, 50VAC', always a good one to remember...
Quite a few comments about buying a new tank... my opinion: The cost of the products aren't relevant, that's purely for an investigation into what works best, you wouldn't buy all those products yourself. Also, not everyone can spare the cost of a new tank, and to be fair the value of the vehicle as a whole, for what it's going to be used for, a resto will spiral out of control if you just simply replace everything on it. Plus it's about showing what is possible if you're prepared to put a little work in to save something. We are a throwaway society now, sometimes fixing up stuff is fun eh?
@@col8981 You can do it with water, nuts and bolts, wrapped in a blanket, put in a cement mixer on the lowest setting for a motorcycle tank, or strapped to the front of the mixer for this unit of a tank. Flip it round a few times, does it in a couple of hours easy. Electrolyses is also a good way to go, literally convert the rust and draw it onto a piece of sacrificial steel. You'd need a power source that is reliable though, which can be expensive.

Thanks Ed.
Edds patience is legendary. The Rover is 100% rust with some paint on top.
Love it Edd. I'm doing a degree in Electronics Engineering and that is the most concise and most helpful explanation of electrical current in DC circuits that I have ever heard. Keep it up Edd, you're show is a highlight of my viewing week!
Parabéns Eddy estávamos com saudades , moro no Brasil e sempre o acompanhei um abraço Deus te abençoe
Eu tbm, adorava o Joias Sobre Rodas.
"It's the volts that jolts, but the mills that kills" as we were taught in the TV repair trade.
" current that kills" but horses for courses :)
As much as I love Edd's work overall, this was the best episode by far from the knowledgeable electricity showdown to the satisfying rust removal. Cheers
That's the best explanation of electricity I've ever heard. You made something that can sound very complicated very easy to understand 👍
I've never seen anybody explaining the Ohm's law in a such brilliant way
Screws, nuts and Bolts, than strap it at the front of an concrete mixer. Enough power and endurance , keep ist Spinning for a while ♥️👍 greetings from Germany
Concrete mixer is the way most people would use to clean the inside of a petrol tank indeed!
I've had this issue my self, and after many hours of using different products I used a 1mm slitting disk to cut the tank in half, got inside with a wire wheel, treated with rust cure and welded back together took around 4 hours to complete and had much better results than relying on the chemical formula to do all the hard work
“Grr, I’m gonna need a longer hose!”
Story of my life Edd 😂
Edd could teach Shop, Science, and Health class all at the same time, and every student would be enthralled.
I love watching each episode bringing the range rover back to life. And also seeing how to bring components back from a disastrous state to workable piece.
That pile of rust from the vacuum would nag and worry me that so much metal is now gone from the tank. Would keep me awake at night. LOL
luckily, the amount of metal lost is 10% of that volume, so not quite so bad
What you've done there Ed is polish a turd, a lot of effort and it's still a turd albeit a bit shinier. I admire your stamina though 😉😂 👍
Agreed! he did say at the beginning, that a brand new tank costs £140 .. now add up the price of all the materials he used to restore this "turd" , from paint to rust remover to screws, nuts and washers to elbow grease and what not .. I don't believe a single penny has been saved that day.
.. but then again, all in the name of science and content creation I guess 😏
Yeah, new tank time.
Yeah, but he helped his viewership. He created, that's what a good tuber will do.
They were my thoughts too. But then, it isn't always possible to find a replacement part, so this is all helpful info (and fun viewing of course).
@@fizmo100 That's precisely the point. Not every viewer abroad can easily access a new tank. But those who point out no money was saved (taking into account it's not become a new tank) are equally correct.
Use broken glass from the windscreen, strap it to the inside of a cemet mixer and leave it for a few hours to do its work
Nice VID, THX!
-quite separately-
My old step father used a fuel tank primer (internal) with chromium on his 72 VW Camper, which is normally used in the aerospace industry. we pulled it out of the camper and 1 quart was enough to coat the inside once we kept flipping it and spinning it.
For the effort it has taken Ed, I would have just bought a new tank! Then u know there is years of life in the new tank! 👍🔧
Yeah but it makes much better viewing watching him repair things instead of just bolting on new bits
@@Scorchzzz the cost of chemicals plus labour would easily exceed the £140 for a new tank it's a false economy also the state of tank would mean that potentially you'd have fuel pump lines injectors clogging up
But then we wouldn't get the content!
Good to see options and enjoyable to watch, but that’s 15 litres of chemical that needs disposing / recycling of !
Best option was to replace and then only a steel tank to recycle 👍
@@Scorchzzz ah, OK.
I thought Ed said that the first 5 litres had in essence fizzled out hence the additional 10 litres due to the size of the task.
👍
what are your labour rates? i can't imagine that buying a new tank wouldn't be cheaper
My thoughts exactly what a waste of time and money and that tank will never be fully sorted
I think he was doing it for a friend or the channel but I'm Sure the new tank was like $200 bucks
@@michaelcolgan3182 yeah a new tank was £140 I'm sure he spend that in materials not including labour plus with the tank in that bad of a shape you always have the risk of clogging up fuel pump lines injectors just a false economy really
Think he just does it for content, nobody in their right mind would do this 😂
Yeah, got to be for content, 5ltrs of that rust remover is about £30 and he used 15ltrs of that alone lol.
Agradeço ao Edd por disponibilizar legenda em português 🇧🇷. Já ganhou meu Big Like.
Com toda certeza!!!
Respeitamos muito o trabalho dele!
Thanks Edd .... You have proven to me just how easy it will be, to order me a new tank. Well done...
Ed. You’re an amazing mechanic. I’ve learned a ton of great tips and tricks from watching you. I think the best was how to weld a finder and pull out the dents. I’m a welder myself and never thought of your idea of starting outside to the middle. Thank you
After watching Edd shake that tank, I believe he can fix anything.
I'm pretty confident that John is not the only Range Rover owner to have a stash of vintage filth somewhere... ;-)
😄😄😄😄😄
Great video as ever. The amount of rust in that tank was frightening! Had you considered electrolysis rather than chemical removal? I've seen excellent results on motorcycle fuel tanks with worse corrosion than the Range Rover's.
the way he presents the show is next level, so good
Well Mike eat your heart out, it's not not about how much profit you can make it's about the knowledge and work. Very informative presentation on electricity to enable a layman to understand it.
Where were your safety glasses, you naughty boy!
Thought the same myself when it smashed the glass! 😳
Electrolysis is the way to go on a tank this rusty.
Who would have thought cement mixers were so useful!
A couple bags of marbles, and a gallon of kerosene. Then shake the hell out of it in every direction and rinse repeat , repeat, repeat, has worked for me.
Yep, although I would use nuts & bolts instead.....
American gallon or UK gallon?
I did this with my old bmw but we couldn’t get all the nuts out but it did help move a lot of it
@Forever Computing
US = gallon
UK = liter
The US is the only country in the world (with the exception of some tiny nations) that uses the Imperial system.
Why?
Because it's 'Merica, we do everything backwards here just to spite the world. (Meant facetiously)
I've used nuts, bolts, only after removing all sending unit etc.
Just a quick question. Why are using aerosol spray paint, when you have a brand new compressed air system?
Because its a pain in the tits gun cleaning etc
@@dantheman7370 But in my opinion, spray painting will never have the longevity and durability of a proper 2K system. If the right primer such as 2K anti-corrosion epoxy is not used, the first signs of corrosion may appear very soon. Especially in rainy Britain on an off-road car.
Definetly one of my favorite Episodes. The level of DIY / fiddeling here is great! Great idea to use the cement mixer to clean that fuel tank!
#milwaukeechristmas
Ed please make longer episodes. Really enjoy watching you at work great tips and advice that half an hour just isn't cutting it lol please
You are welcome for the comment, Edd. Please continue the great content. I like how you sometimes play around with mixing the sound and doing some neat tricks with it. Good work!
Looks like he picked Evaporust and Hammerite to do the job.
It may be a silly question, Edd, but here goes: would an option of sandblasting the inside of the tank not be more effective?
Only way sandblasting would work is if you cut the fuel tank in half to open it up and then weld both half's back together and hope there is no leaks. Fuel tanks are not made to come apart after they are made. Either you do something similar to what Mr. China is doing or get a used fuel tank that is in better condition or buy a new fuel tank.
Ruslan Kurbanov лучше гаек м-6,штук 100-200 /из китайского набора/...
Eddie, love the channel. All the very best of the TV stuff without the annoying other TV interludes. 👍👍👍🇬🇧🏴
It's such a pleasure to see you back on "TV" 😍 And THANK GOD with the same, relaxing and always interesting, atmosphere as in old days with this .. other guy .. I am sooo happy, for real 🙏🏼🙏🏼
"Aha - I seem to have found John's stash of vintage filth" - excellent!
He found the less interesting stash.
@@JazzFunkNobby1964 Ha ha!
When John is finished with his stash of vintage filth, can I borrow it please.
Какой же кайф. Спасибо за русские субтитры
Точно! вообще офигел! даже каналы миллионики такого не делаю, подход мать его!

Как будто окунулся в старые добрые махинаторы
Great explaination of electricity and its dangers (love the river analogy!). During my training in the RAF we learnt the mantra 'lethal Voltage is defined as 30VDC, 50VAC', always a good one to remember...
Well done camera operators for getting such great shots from inside the fuel tank. That was excellent!
I think you could learn a lesson from Mustie1 on how to deal with rusty fuel tanks.
Quite a few comments about buying a new tank... my opinion:
The cost of the products aren't relevant, that's purely for an investigation into what works best, you wouldn't buy all those products yourself.
15L of Evapo-Rust would have cost you £100!
Que bueno volver a verte después de joyas sobre ruedas hoy encontré tu canal estaría bueno que fuera traducido en castellano los subtítulos son muy rápidos para leer 👍
pienso lo mismo
Thanks for comparisons there! What I did for "automation" was strap in back of truck and go for desert cruise with 15' chain
This came at exactly the right time for me Ed ! Really Really helpful ! Thanks a mill - gives me the confidence to tackle it myself !
Just throw in a new tank. A bit like trying to 'rejuvenate' a battery. Recycle/replace. Cheaper and quicker in the end especially if the tank pinholes in a couple of years.
Exactly my thoughts.
I know he did it to let us know our options, but I like you agree. PUT IN A NEW FUEL TANK!!!!! If a job is worth doing do it right & do it right the first time!!!!
Why throw away something that is good and usable? Makes no sense.
Because I don’t want to drive a vehicle that might catch fire & burn to the ground & potentially burn my family, my friends or myself to DEATH!!!!!!!!
I love how every British person just has those GU dessert pots knocking about.
Think the glass must cost more than the contents lol, GU deserts are nice though, hence why Edd could have ask me for 7 pots, and another 7 just in case lol
Lol, rubbish metal in that fuel tank, just replace it Edd!
Ed. Your programmes are worth so much more than hoovering the rust from a tank!!! Watched you strip down and set the preload torque on an atlas axle pinion bearing using basic trigonometry and weights. We need more than this Range rover rust bucket?
Dear Edd, a truly excellent description and explanation of vehicle electricity.
