Thanks a ton for your video. I actually bought a spare tank for my vintage cushman because the previous sealer in my original tank was cracked and failing. It was the white stuff. I started with the degreaser on that one and it didnt touch the old sealer so i put a gallon of acetone in it overnight. That disolved it. Then i went to the degreaser. For the spare tank, it was dirty inside. I started with white vinegar and some nuts for aggregate and shook it all about. Then i moved onto the degreaser. Poured the metal prep from one tank to the other after soaking all sides and then drained it back into the og bottle when both tanks were done. Both are now rinsed and bone dry ready to do the paint step in the morning. Im really glad i had a heat gun, as the shape of my tank leaves some liquid in there. Anyway, thanks for the step by step. Both these tanks needed it. Surprisingly, the less rusty one is more solid than the other one that had a pinhole. I kept losing any gas i put in overnight.
Tip for anyone else watching, my tank has a port on the bottom with threads on the outside that the tillotson fuel filter screws onto. I drilled a hole into a wine cork and threaded it on to plug that hole. It worked great. My gas caps were vented so i ductaped the hole. A big plug would be ideal but my paint is going to be redone anyway, i wasnt too concerned about damaging the current paint
I've gone through this process several times recently and it's quite tedious. It takes time and care. I'm sure that neighbors are wondering why I've been holding and spinning fuel tanks for hours on end while walking around the yard
I'm having the same thoughts about my neighbors! LOL. Yes, it is tedious when done right, and doing it right can't be rushed. Those who rush it and do if poorly pay the price. I guess that goes for all things automotive. I used copious amounts of muriatic acid, twirling and turning, rinsing and repeating. The POR15 tank sealer should do fine as long as I don't rush the 96 hour curing period.
Thanks that was great video, it helps me on my older cars that fuel tanks are hard to find in good shape if needed. At least this process do the trick on pin holes if any and stop any from accruing.
I am compelled to wonder, is there any value in masking off the gas cap to prevent the product from interfering with the dynamics of a ventilated/breathing gas cap? Maybe use a sacrificial gas cap for the application process? Anyway, this was a well done and useful tutorial and the gratitude is flowing! Thank You, Brother!
I have no rust or any leaks i discovered the factory sealer had peeled of ,, i have cleaned to tank and looks clean my question is the prep necessary like the decreaser , ive done the water rinse and dried for two days now just waithing for my por-15 to arrive from amazon on top of my tank i might have some of the old coating that has not peeled and pretty solid would it be alright to over coat
I've done 2 ZZR1100 tanks, which are famous for rotting. Worked perfect. In fact, I might use 1 for my ashes, it lasts that well. Follow the instructions or you will be crying.
I welded & POR coated my tank about 3 years ago bc of a tiny leak and haven't re attached it to the bike yet. Im thinking of giving it a 2nd coat now before I put it back together. Yea or nay?
I'm wanting to use it on a 1957 moped. I'm fearful that the material will reduce the inner diameter of my petcock so that I want be able to get the petcock and it's stems back in the tank. The untreated inner diameter is probably about 1/2". What are your thoughts?
if the fuel tank takes a hard hit, it can damage the insulating layer(sealer layer), which can lead to other damage to the carburetor? Is that correct or not?
Did your kit come with the repair cloth for larger holes? I definitely dont need that, I wonder if buying the degreaser, rust stopper, and sealer seperate is cheaper.
@@FlippinCustomizedthanks man! I see on por15's site they sell everything separate. Perfect, I actually have 2 tanks to do so I'll get the required sizes.
Another question. I used a different sealer in a tank once, it flaked up after 10 years. How can I get it out?????? There is rust under that white sealer.
belated reply, just FYI-- I used a pressure washer wand on my soda blaster and got the tank's inside really clean. Took a couple of days and 40 pounds of soda, and a narrow goose neck LED desk lamp to see inside.
@FlippinCustomized yeah it's advertised like that. But what I mean is like the process of removing rust/cleaning the inside of the tank. If I were to put a cleaner or something inside it would just come out
Not sure putting it out in the sun is the best way to go. I'd just leave it in the garage and wait the 4 days. Beware, when you think you've drained it all, there's still more to get out. If you think you're done and leave it sitting at a slight angle, you'll come back to find some POR pooled up in the tank, which isn't good. Set it in a position where the excess will spread out and not pool in a crevice.
OK here's my next question. if I can't get the thing dry and every time I go to pick it up the check it's dry more water comes out of it and I can shake it and still hear some water sloshing around. Do I have a bad tank?? Because my arms are tired as hell and I've only finished step one. Still drying it air compressor yada yada yada. I really wish I could show you a picture. Or to FaceTime 💜💜💜. I have done a lot of painting in my time, but this is the first time I've ever done the inside of a tank!! And that's why I went looking for research you don't know how many other videos I watched before I fell in love with you ... and subscribed 💜💜
And it's a 3.1 for a Harley sportster 883. Hopefully you know exactly what style of tank I'm talking about. And I do appreciate you educating me so much.
I have used this product many times, and i can say it is a top product. i did one tank 10 years ago and it is still perfect.
That’s great to know

But it works well done properly
it worked on my kawasaki..

Exactly 😂😂
5 minutes??? Try 20
Very good video. Love the sight glass mod as well.
Thanks for sharing.

Exactly watching this vid for a pin hole leak that just started on my intruder lol thanks for the info
It will work or should

Your welcome it has worked for us on several projects
Never tryed this brand but Red kote works great for me
Might try it next
Have had good luck with por

Use aluminum duct tape
The product I have used for 30 years is 3M EC-776. expensive and aircraft safe.
Nice I will check it out thanks

Agree
I just noticed POR is a 10 min drive from me. They seem to have a customer store on site. I'm off in the morning to ask for their advice.
They make great products for sure
Can you use muriatic acid and rubbing alcohol to prep the tank?
I guess you could but that flash rust soo fast
I welded & POR coated my tank about 3 years ago bc of a tiny leak and haven't re attached it to the bike yet. Im thinking of giving it a 2nd coat now before I put it back together. Yea or nay?
Honestly I would direct that one at por directly as I’m not sure especially since it’s been 3 years
How did you make out?
Great video!!
One question..... Does it smell alot? or can I do this in my basement shop??
Thank you, it was summer so had doors open but did not seem to smell to bad
Thanks for sharing. Do you think this seals small leaks?
Yes
I'm wanting to use it on a 1957 moped. I'm fearful that the material will reduce the inner diameter of my petcock so that I want be able to get the petcock and it's stems back in the tank. The untreated inner diameter is probably about 1/2". What are your thoughts?
Can you access it to wipe that portion before it cures?
I needed this video! 🙏
Excellent glad it helped, perfect for the ATV steel tanks
Thankyou. I'm told that red coat stuff is horrendous. This product coupled with your abilities & performance looks great. Clean efficient result
Thank you for the kind words, we have had great luck with the POR products
if the fuel tank takes a hard hit, it can damage the insulating layer(sealer layer), which can lead to other damage to the carburetor?
Is that correct or not?
Never experienced that
Not sure but seems flexible
Did your kit come with the repair cloth for larger holes? I definitely dont need that, I wonder if buying the degreaser, rust stopper, and sealer seperate is cheaper.
It did not, it may be a few dollars cheaper yes
@@FlippinCustomizedthanks man! I see on por15's site they sell everything separate. Perfect, I actually have 2 tanks to do so I'll get the required sizes.
The black rust paint is a disaster in a can. The tank liner works great, prep is key.
Prep is key
I have used por15 rust paint on projects many years ago. Absolutely no issues in over 10 years. I use it on the frames typically
How much time did you spend on the final step before letting it sit to drain out? The kit's instructions did not say
I rotated for a hood five minutes to ensure all surfaces were covered then drained
My motorcycle tank is driving me insane. I have tried everything and it still leaks. So im doing this next.
Make sure you strip other coatings off first
How is it holding up after a year? Got a tank that I need to coat and looking for a long lasting product.
Good I also have one that’s 2 years old
Would u recommend coating a brand new ebay gas tank has never had any fuel or anything in it
Honestly wouldn’t hurt they are very thin and rust out
Another question. I used a different sealer in a tank once, it flaked up after 10 years. How can I get it out?????? There is rust under that white sealer.
10 years that’s good, try the old rocks in gas tank and shake to break it up
belated reply, just FYI-- I used a pressure washer wand on my soda blaster and got the tank's inside really clean. Took a couple of days and 40 pounds of soda, and a narrow goose neck LED desk lamp to see inside.
what if there is bits of loose rust in the tank, how do you get that out before putting the degrease in
Ensure its completely dry after washing out and I use compressed air and a shop vacuum
I use a garden hose. Rinse it out… then let it dry.
The key is ''PATIENCE''!!
what do i do if my tank has pin holes in it so anything that i put into it comes out?
I believe this will seal pin holes as well
@FlippinCustomized yeah it's advertised like that. But what I mean is like the process of removing rust/cleaning the inside of the tank. If I were to put a cleaner or something inside it would just come out
Some yes

Correct, was put in sun after it had solidified
So how did it hold up a year later?
Still working great no issues
Should I rinse out with water and degreaser a virgin tank?
I would yes
OK here's my next question. if I can't get the thing dry and every time I go to pick it up the check it's dry more water comes out of it and I can shake it and still hear some water sloshing around.
