Paul's scene on the porch with Maya, where they both expound on their love of wine - one of the best scenes ever. That one scene made pinot sales explode for years! I ran the Sideways Wine Club from 2005 - 2010, and still carry Santa Barbara Pinots I discovered back then. They are world-class!
One of my favorite movies. Paul’s face after he says “ interesting perspective” about fictional novels is one of the funniest parts. Everyone was excellent
One of the greatest endings in a movie of all time. It's a 'literary' ending - a 'literature' ending maybe; something you would find in a literary novel. It's also a complex but very satisfying ending... for adults! 'Complex' adults! Love Giamatti in it. The whole cast tell the story of the characters perfectly. Big time stuff.
That's exactly it. Very flawed, yet relatable people, adulting their hearts out. They're exactly like me, if I knew anything about wine, had written The Great American Novel, and was as beautiful as Virginia Madsen. And you just know that Miles is going to write a highly acclaimed and successful second novel. You hope, anyway. He has it in him.
I taught "A Separate Peace", the novel from which the student is reading at the end. Oh my God-- that passage made me cry every time. I love t the movie is literary to its core.
I absolutely love this film. It works on a number of levels: there is pathos, humour, insightfulness and great acting. Oh, the soundtrack throughout is a gem. Five stars.
One of my all-time favorite movies. I've watched it so many times (last night) that I know the lines by heart. All for actors made the movie work. I was blessed to have lived in Solvang for 10 years and watching the movie makes me homesick. It is the one place I wish I could return as a resident, if I hit the Lotto.
@@richfictionfighter Sure .....it covers a Lot of bases, doesn't it. ? It is ancient and Modern at the same time..... .. even Aristotle would have liked it.
Mr. Giamatti, what a fucking amazing actor. I always return to watch this movie, not really sure what attracts me to it, but a great movie, nonetheless. Could not had worked without Giamatti and Haden Church.
There's so much about it that can be applied to our own lives. Its about making it through the detours of life, adapting our goals, overcoming our problems, and still having fun and hope.
My favorite movie of all time-I have watched this movie (no exaggeration)daily for three months straight and in total maybe 600 times.I have stayed at all of the motels and eaten at all of those restaurants in Buellton and Solvang. They are tranquil and relaxing.
+79steelymatt That was something me and my dad have wanted to do for a long time. Its nice to see there is someone who's an ever bigger fan of the movie than myself.
I actually met Alexander Payne, author of Sideway in Santa Monica at the Ruskin Theater in 2012. It's was the premier of the play based on the movie. He talked extensively about his years in Santa Barbara before writing his book and the aftermath of its success. Much of his real life is in the book more than you'd think!
Awesome. I take that trip twice a year so my wife can visit her Dad. It's always so nice to get out of L.A. and drive through glorious mountains and vineyards.
Giamatti's best work i.m.o. Such a great actor. They could have not cast a better actor for this character. He, and Haden were so believable as best friends. One of my top ten favorite movies of all time.
Being the lead in Sideways would have been any actor's best work ever unless you've always been the lead in the Godfather or Citizen Kane. I totally understand that this movie is in your top ten of all time, it's a true masterpiece and I don't know anyone who can disagree with that, that's pretty rare.
Definitely, " Sideways 2 "should be done for sure.!! So many unanswered questions about Miles novel, his overnight girlfriend could have been, his friends shaky marriage.. and another trip across Napa valley.. Just wow..
I think this is the story of two true friends, different and opposite that complement each other, I believe that friendship is something very important ... sharing something between people gives a different sweet flavor to our lives.I love this movie!
This movie was like no other I have ever seen. The first time I saw it I was bored and confused. It stayed in my mind and created this itch that only this movie can scratch. Now 20 times later watching the movie it is my favorite movie ever. People think I'm crazy for saying this, but the more you watch it the more you see how golden every line and every scene is. My opinion. I'm just glad to read some of these comments from people that feel kind of the same.
And then there became Billions....Hoping to buy lunch for Paul one day soon. This guy is still human and how he he got both of these gigs is why I want a good fun lunch one day. A memorable legend.
When he talks about the characters relationship in the movie it had me cracking up. Because it made me think about all the great dialogue btw Giamatti and Church's character along with the whole brilliant subtext of the love/hate and how those two characters pulled it off. If, anyone, reads this and has not seen the movie then rent it immediately.
Hah ha. To add to one of the replies in this column every time I watch this film nonstop for a few days in a roll. It's straight up real life experiences and the doggone it LoL frustrations are right on the spot true. fantastic
Sideways is my 3rd favorite film of all time behind No Country for old Men and Forrest Gump. This movie just has everything. The chemistry between Paul and Thomas are awesome. I always wanted to see them meet up again and see what happens.
Hard to believe it myself but Sideways is my number 1 favorite movie of all time. Bold statement but when I look at another top five to compare it, Sideways wins.
I had seen John Adams before Sideways. It was such a cool way to see his career take iff. Then The Illusionist, then Turbo. And well Billions. No spoilers! My favourite line is in Ides of March. You will know it when you hear it.
I so agree Karen! Temperamental, thin skinned, can only grow in certain climates. Both Miles and Maya's deep discussion on that porch, while on the surface was about wine🍷, metaphorically is was about human beings and life! Virginia Madson's response had such depth of feeling! It made me tear up immediately! One of my favorite scenes ever on film!🎥 Just love it! 💕
I'm a somm, and Sideways is often on in the background, like a favorite song. But Paul's best performance is John Adams, particularly the opening episode where he interviews a black man as white men drool on his neck, holding thick work ropes.
Vertical wasn’t nearly as good. It’s too self-referential and its comic scenes are either too weak or so extreme as to be horrific. It also has a surprisingly dark ending. They’d have to make some significant changes in the adaptation for it to approach the greatness of the first one.
@@lisvender I don't know, I'm about 90% through Vertical and am loving it. And I've heard of the dark ending, but it makes sense. I think it could work as a movie, and Nebraska kind of is similar to it.
Interesting point about there being a lot of lying in the film, but it's totally true. Both characters are always covering up for their shortcomings or their misdeeds.
Has anyone seen the kids movie where Giamatti stole some kid's story or idea or something. It has Steve Erkel in it as well. Hard to believe thats the same guy in Sideways.
Love Sideways. Giamatti as Miles...Great. One criticism...Sandra Oh & THC learned to ride a motorcycle together. Giamatti couldn't figure out how to hit a golf ball? Kinda blows the whole "...we're gonna play some golf..." at breakfast comment outta the water. A half-dozen hours over a few days at the range is all it takes to learn to hit a ball.
Shared this with my niece and soon-to-be nephew. And I forgot about the full nude scene and the sex scene. And I think I somewhat corrupted my 27 year old niece who had never been subjected to any type of vulgarity as such. oh well.
Paul, Sideways is the best movie ever. I hate you in the billions role. I stopped watching when you dress up in bondage stuff. Sideways, you were the most human character ever!!
mike enyart - I disagree on both counts. Definitely not bad, I love the movie. I don't think in the end it is sad either. Miles finally gives himself a chance to start over. Maya opened the door for him with her phone message to allow him to begin again to pursue happiness. But I suppose it is a bit open to interpretation. A wonderful movie.
Sideways is one of those movies you can watch again and again and still enjoy it.
I wish Hollywood would make movies with Paul Giamatti as the lead. Hidden gem throughout the 00s.
