With that culture he is qualified to be king of Gondor
Awesome comment!! 👌👌👌
Ya ..not a stupid intendant..
❤❤❤💯💯
Qualified for Texas Chainsaw Massacre looool
Gondor has no king.Gondor needs no king.
He actually speaks 10 languages. You forgot the elven one
😅
and westron.
was thinking the same thing
12 - russian languaga
That's the one I was thinking about
His swedish is a bit hesitant but it's perfectly understandable and absolutely correct grammatically. I can't judge his quality in the seven other languages that he apparantely speaks besides english, but I can definitely tell that he's an impressive man.
His Italian was great.
His Spanish (Argentinian accent) to be specific was what impressed me. His Catalan is also very good.
Learning Catalan as a foreigner is a little "extra" to be sure given that speaking Spanish there is perfectly acceptable!
His Italian was almost perfect.
Viggo's way of speaking any language is hesitant.
True story. When Viggo Mortensen was filming for the movie "Captain Fantastic" in Washington state, he had to speak a couple of lines of Chinese. The people making the movie contacted my Chinese teacher (who is not into movies at all) through the language school she was teaching at then. They picked her up in Seattle and drove her to the set in a limo, and she spent a few hours there teaching Viggo the correct pronunciation of the Chinese lines he had to speak, then they drove her back. She got something like $200 for the time she spent teaching him. She had no idea who he was. Later that week, when we met for our Chinese lesson, she told me that she had taught "some Danish actor, his name was like 'Vig' or something" how to say his lines. I was like, "Vig? Do you mean Viggo?!" She said, "Oh yeah, that was it." My eyes about popped out of my head. I asked her, "Do you know how famous he is?!?" She really didn't know. She'd never watched any of the Lord of the Rings movies and had no idea who he was, but she said he was a really nice guy.
How famous is he? I have never seen him in any movie. But him speaking different languages was all right. I also speak many but with horrible accent. I was impressed by his neutral accent in all languages
@@bambinaforever1402 History of Violence, The Road are a couple movies he's been in, also a small role in Lord of the Rings
@@Benni-rp9or I also might suggest to add Alatriste, great movie.
«Tell the lord duke of Enghien that we appreciate his words, but this is Spanish tercio»
@@bambinaforever1402 is this real life? He's fucking Aragorn!
Sometimes the most honest opinions and painting of someone else's character comes from a place of blissful bias and unknowing. I love this was all summed up by her saying he was a really nice guy 😁
French is excellent, Spanish perfect, Italian and Catalan on point. And he seems to speak other languages at a high level. This man is so gifted, he is a chameleon. Actor, painter, poet, musician, photographer, scriptwriter, director, producer, poliglot, Viggo Mortensen lives 9 lifes in one. Awesome !
Very awesome!
He did butcher that Arabic but to be fair he was going for a Moroccan dialect which is hard even for other native Arabic speakers.
He made albums with Buckethead lmao
@@zzzzzz69 thanks for sharing
His french is ok not excelent, the man is amazing there is no need to exagerate
His Spanish is literally flawless. Sounds 100% native. Obviously, his English as well.
He's just absolutely adorable when he speaks Swedish! He said he had a wooden horse like that as a child, but unfortunately their dog ate it's legs.
Ah, thank you for the translation! Tak! ( Did I say that right?) 😊
Hey!!! I'm a subscriber
@@MontagZosoIt would be "Tak" in his native Danish. "Tack" in Swedish. (And "Takk" in Norwegian).
Speaking of, the last segment where he supposedly spoke Norwegian was really just Danish. Same words either way, but by pronunciation, definitely Danish.
@@hlorii6598also "Takk" in Icelandic (or “kærar þakkir” but that’s pretty formal)
Damn, thats so cute
Viggo Mortensen is truly a polyglot! An American actor who was raised a few years in Denmark and then a couple of years in Argentina! His Danish father and mother must have traveled a lot! This is why he is fluent in so many languages! A smart actor!
Viggo lived in Argentina from age two to age 11. That is more than a couple of years. He lived there for nine years, and very formative years for language. Basically, from preschool up through fifth grade and maybe into sixth grade. His mother is American, and his father is Danish, so yeah, he had exposure to three languages from age two onward. He also writes poetry in Spanish. He said he dreams in Spanish often. If you can write good poetry in a language, you have a better grasp of it than the vast majority of its speakers. Poetry requires a vast vocabulary and sense of rhyming and off-rhymes in that language, which is difficult. I took poetry to improve my prose writing, and it is difficult, and it is my native language. He is a very intelligent man.
@@SusanaMontero-h5z His Spanish has taken on more Catalan because of his time in Spain. He starred in a historical movie in Spain, all in Spanish, so his accent has probably changed a bit from when he was younger. When he lived in Argentina, it was in Buenos Aires, and then Chaco.
I daresay hyper polyglot at this point. 10 including elvish isn’t it? I think that qualifies
He actually speaks them publicly which requires a good level of certainty that what he'll say will make sense...Wonderful to see someone connecting with people in their language
His Spanish is absolutely perfect! He has an argetinian accent....
creció hasta los 10 años en Argentina. El español argentino es su lengua materna
is because he is argentinian
@@jsullivan2112 If you're born in Argentina you're also American :)

Viggo Mortensen is one of my very favorite actors. He's so good. I had no idea he could speak many languages fluently. Seriously an impressive guy
I agree.this actor is underrated.imho.he's awesome.💖👏👍😎
Most danes speak multiple languages, I myself speak danish, german, english, some portugeese, greenlandic, some slavic words. And then I can speak with my nordic family ( norway and sweden). Not hard, just needs work.
PS . Got some arabic also, all about trying to fit in and rrspect for other cultures and countries you have lived in.
The Norwegian was Danish, but still all those languages were impressive.
I came here to say this
No wonder it sounded so weird 😂
Ja det var jo rein dansk 😊
Still 9 if you count his Sindarin :)
Norsk bogmål er den korrekte og eneste rigtige måde at tale dansk.
Vi har tabt evnen til at tale vores eget sprog.
Aragorn is about 110 years old, he have done a lot of things and learned a lot of languages. He was taught by Elves.
Yeah I don't know who this Viggo Mortensen person is, this is clearly the King of Gondor XD
Elvis taught him some stuff too.
@@michaelharrington75 like what?
@@Roman_Bazhenov How to be "the King".
At the time of the War of the Ring, Aragorn was approximately 88. Lived to 210 so that's something.
He definitely had a good time with Christopher Lee.
This man is much more than a great actor.
He's also a writer, producer, director, musician, photographer, painter and poet
The face of the lady behind him when he’s speaking Catalan. Priceless 😱😂
What I find impressive is not that he speaks each of these languages but that he can do so conversationally, in a fairly fluid way, with what is, to my ear, an appropriate accent and cadence for each.
His Swedish was really not very good but he still makes himself understood.
I speak swedish french and understand norvegian. All of these languages he dont speak good
Italian he just READ from some sheets of paper
He speaks Arabic as if he is Moroccan bravo viggo I have seen him in a movie speak Arabic but I did not think that he do it out of the movies great actor
yea I'm from sa and didn't understand his Arabic till i realized its Moroccan
I didn’t understand a word he said in Arabic, except maybe السلام عليكم! Come on now.
My impression is that he does not speak Arabic fluently or well. When speaking Arabic, he sounds like a drunk Italian.
It would be interesting to get feedback from more Arabic speakers.
He butchered it.. but to be fair even native Arabic speakers struggle with the Moroccan dialect. Still it’s appreciated by the crowd cause the effort itself and pronouncing 3-4 words correctly as a European is impressive enough.
@@davidemmet7343 He butchered it.. but to be fair even native Arabic speakers struggle with the Moroccan dialect. Still it’s appreciated by the crowd cause the effort itself and pronouncing 3-4 words correctly as a European is impressive enough.
There's more too, not only does he speak all these languages, he's an accomplished jazz musician, I think he even has an album (can't remember what instrument he plays though) I think he paints too.
He truly is a renaissance man
And he’s published books of poetry and photography!
100% Correct. Viggo is also a scriptwriter, a director, a poet and a photographer. One of the most talented people on the planet.
His English, Spanish, Italian, French and Catalan are excellent!
And danish 😊
Catalan more or less, but anyway he is able to speak it.
I only know english and swedish out of these. His Swedish was a bit forced but ok still. Would need a month of 100% commitment and he´d be fluent in that too.
Yeah, let’s say that he can recite short speeches in many languages. He is an actor after all.
@@quaestiox Do you not realize how painfully obvious it is when someone acts mad about other peoples' talents? We all know you are a loser who is just frustrated in your own lack of ability.
His Arabic is broken, but at least he dared to try. Impressive.
Yeah, I whole hardheartedly agree with you. Way too many (especially) English speakers don't even try. One has to accept that when we learn a new language, we're suddenly illiterate for a moment and that's fine because it's in the spirit of learning.
There less avtors who can succeed and try speak good arabic. My fam speaks maori and arabic
His Arabic is way better than mine and I am Arabic. I was born and raised in America and both of my parents worked so I never spoke Arabic growing up. I only know a tiny bit. When I try to speak Arabic I can never get through a sentence without using English words.
What you need is someone to chat with in Arabic, I can be that person, it is called language exchange and I do it all the time@@NC1195_
I keep finding more and more reasons to fall in love with him
With a sweet adorable accent from North Europe ☺️
Well i can speak English and Australian !!! 🤪
I can kinda speak english
Don't tell his wife!!!
I can confirm, his English is good 👏🏻
😂
I spent 3 years trying to learn just one other language other than English and wasn’t even slightly proficient. People like Viggo blow my mind. The same goes for people with natural proficiency with music too. I’ve tried learning no less than 5 different instruments, one for as long as 4 years, and I could never understand how to read sheet music or play even slightly well.
You have to practice a little more, It's all about PRACTICE.
Maybe it's a prejudice but native English speakers are not exposed to other languages as much as native Spanish speakers for example. We see many movies in English and hear a lot of songs which makes English a very familiar language for us, also Spanish and Italian languages are very similar so it's even easier for us.
@ Oh I totally agree. Especially in the United States most kids are barely taught anything in the way of a second language until nearly high school. Most other countries, even Canada with French, are exposed to other languages much earlier on. It’s a whole lot harder to fluently learn other languages and for them to be natural at an older age. I wish that could change in the U.S. It’s a little arrogant to just assume everyone else should just learn your own language, and then you don’t learn theirs. I’ve always been pretty naturally inept with a few things like languages, math, and reading music. But I think had I started with a 2nd or 3rd language at a very young age, I could have learned them pretty well. But today? Phew, I think it may be a little late. The best I can do are a few short phrases or niceties. But I do make it a point to learn those when I visit another country, out of respect. Things like please, thank you, excuse me, congratulations, those kinds of things.
The only way you really learn a language fast is by using it in real life. Be it because you live somewhere the language is spoken, or because you use it for work or some other reason. If you went to another country and had to use it every day you would learn it in a matter of months. At least to a degree that lets you do your job. And that's without cheating, if you just hang out with english speakers or avoid local people you will not learn anything. And you will learn how people really speak, which is usually not the way instructors do.
If you’re not proficient after 3 years you’re simply using the wrong method. Use comprehensible input, not textbooks and memorisation
he is not only handsome but also intelligent and a great poliglot, I have always loved this man❤️❤️
Polyglot, but yes!
He is not speaking Norwegian in the last clip. He is speaking Danish. But he might be talking to Norwegians, they would understand what he was saying :)

Surprised this didn't include his Russian. He speaks pretty good Russian which he learned to a reasonable level of proficiency (or improved, at least, I forget how much he spoke beforehand) for the movie Eastern Promises.
What a great movie that was. I loved Eastern Promises. The scene in the steam bath was amazing.

Meh, the Nordic languages are on a spectrum, know one and you know them all.
@@abrahamedelstein4806 I beg to differ, you may understand the languages (Norwegian and Swedish in this case), but writing and speaking is a completely different aspect of knowing languages.
@@abrahamedelstein4806 Not true at all, I'm speaking as a Dane.
@@ad_astraperaspera I don't think they should be counted as separate languages, just like Australian and American English are still considered English even though their mutual intelligibility and spelling differ. The Nordic language is artificially divided by politics.
@@abrahamedelstein4806 With all due respect, I think you mix your terms. Nordic is used to describe the countries and territories of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. These places have very different languages. Finnish is even in a different language family. The other languages were one language with different dialects long ago. Now, however, they are so different that they are considered distinct languages.

I myself speak German (mother language) French, Englisch and Polish, can read and understand Italian well if slowly spoken and also read Spanish texts with a comprehension of about 60 to 65%. Actually i am learning Spanish and Serbo Croatian. My English is fluid but not grammatically perfect. My French and Polish are good. All foreign languages have in common that i write it far superior than i speak. And that´s the point. Being fluid needs daily practice. I am sure when Viggo will speak French for some weeks in a row you will see it will be much more fluid than in this example.

Talented man, just wonderfully talented and yet - still humble
I would like to know more about his technique in how to learn so many languages. English and Argentinian Spanish are his native tongues and obviously Danish too. But the others, how did he do it, and at that high level?
Italian, Catalan, and to a lesser extent French, are very easy once you know Spanish, since they are all Romance languages. The Argentine accent also has a very strong Italian cadence, due to the influence of Italian immigrants. If you heard him in Green Book speak some Sicilian Italian, he does a great job. Then Swedish and Norwegian are also very closely related to Danish, as they are all Scandinavian languages. Arabic would definitely be the hardest and most impressive if he learned it fluently.
