Then and Now: Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey (1967)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 кві 2016
- Aged just 17 and 15 respectively, Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey had just filmed Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet (1968). The pair relate their experiences (one story concerns their co-star Bruce Robinson, future director of Withnail & I) and when asked about the perils of early stardom, Whiting concludes, "It's very hard to know what to do afterwards."

I've only just saw this interview today. I first saw this movie in high school, I think it was my sophomore year nearly 30 years ago, as we were reading Romeo and Juliet in class. I will never forget how it impacted me, I just remembered sobbing during certain scenes. The acting was spectacular. These two ARE Romeo and Juliet to me and always will be. Such a great film. For such a young guy, Leonard Whiting seems so mature and handled this interview so well. I was about 8 years old when this aired and glad to be able to watch it now.
This is so odd because it almost looks as if modern actors got put in old fashioned clothes 😂

Goldn Haze because [young] people today often imagine that people from 50+ years ago were always more classy and serious, more conservative, celebrities didn’t laugh and joke around much. Which was sort of true, if you’re thinking of folks like Katherine Hepburn and such.

Haha…the world would have been SO happy if they had ended up with each other in real life. They were just so perfect and believable together. When they appear together, Leonard is very protective of her, and still looks at her like he loves her. But Olivia said in her book that, although she loved Leonard, and still does, they were always meant to be just great friends.
you are right, the world would have loved it if they wound up together. but their careers as actors would have to be sacrificed for that fate to come to pass, and no no young person in that industry could trade love for a career at that age
These are two of the most attractive people I've ever seen in my life.
I had watched Romeo and Juliet when I was in 9th grade for english class. Leonard and Olivia had such great chemistry in the film. I can't see anyone one else playing Romeo and Juliet. Olivia is such a beautiful actress. And Leonard is a really handsome man. I agree Zack Efron looks like him a lot. I wonder if they could be related (even distantly). I had recently (a few days ago) bought the movie off google play and showed it to my kids (12 &15). And surprisingly they had liked it. I asked my eldest if their english teacher had shown them the movie. And she said no. Which was weird. Because I've seen it when I was in 8th/9th grade. Maybe she'll see it in high school.

Mic Jack immigration from 3rd world countries changes USA’s culture? What are you talking about 😂 do you even know how USA became to be what it is today? 😂
Mic Jack Bobby Brady Ah I see. So both of you are are racist. If you want to talk about logic and history, then Whites simply don’t belong in the USA because it’s not their land. It’s the Native Americans’. Of course, you probably don’t care about all the bloodshed that your people caused because in the end you won, right?
I don’t even know where you got that info that 90% of Americans are native Americans because if you had a pair of functioning eyes, you’d see how wrong you are.
USA is not a white country (and it never was). I think that’s made perfectly clear when your country has the most diverse population in the world, aside from Singapore. The only difference is that there are racists like you who believe in white supremacy. USA’s economy squarely relies on the influx of those so-called ‘3rd world’ people which you so negatively mention and without them, your economy would actually be even worse than it is.
The illegal immigration is wrong and should be corrected. I’m not going to argue with you about that. However, the way that Trump has been going out in deporting illegal immigrants is wrong, inhumane and just as illegal. Although the funny thing about you mentioning illegal immigration is that you’re not worried about USA’s socioeconomics worsening even more because there’s bound to be overpopulation soon and limited housing. No. You’re worried about ‘incompatible cultures’ negatively influencing your ‘unity and security’ when it actually doesn’t.
It seems that you don’t know this due to your racism, but majority of the illegal immigrants from 3rd world countries are actually educated and skilled workers. Racism just still exists in USA (which you are so finely proving) so you think that they’re basically uncivilized people. Funny thing too because it’s not Americans who are adapting to the immigrants, but actually the immigrants themselves. They’re the ones who have to adapt to the culture change and assimilate themselves into your country, and yet you’re acting as if the mere sight of them disgusts you.
Let me just give you a simple answer of how illogical and stupid your claims are that Islam culture is incompatible with the rest. Ever heard of Singapore?
It’s one of the richest countries in the world and boasts a low crime rate, unlike USA. And guess what? Islam is one of the majority religions there, and so is Catholicism. The so-called ‘incompatible cultures’ are able to adapt to each other and stay united despite their differences, because they respect one another and don’t think that 1 race or color is superior to the rest. Something that most Whites are actually struggling with in the US. Cultures do not threaten a country’s unity or security. It’s if there’s no respect towards the other cultures.
And be careful, because you two sound awfully like Hitler did and we know what happened.
Do you feel dumb now because your racist ass is being called out? USA is filled with many problems, but your white ass insecurity isn’t one of them. Your country has a diverse population. Live with it and just learn to embrace that fact instead of whining that you won’t be able to enjoy your white privileges anymore.
Bobby Brady omg you’re actually hilarious. I really didn’t know that white supremacists like you still exist. You’re the type who would justify white colonizations in Asia, wouldn’t you? Because you believe that ‘whites’ are the superior race and that you deserve everything. How close minded can you get?
You’re the reason why USA is a laughing stock. Instead of having pride in your diversity, you’re choosing to oppress POC instead. Clearly you don’t even know your own country’s history because you choose to be blind to facts.
You don’t even know Nazism started. Just remember where racism stems from, because it definitely wasn’t POCs that started it.

@Bobby Brady GenX certainly didn't carry themselves like that... Remember that GenX brought us Legally Blonde
@Bobby Brady Your generalizations are based on what happening on the movie screen, on television, and your limited human observations pre-Internet. The majority of GenXers were not in the public eye at all unless they were celebrities. Normal folk did not have social media, but even without that evidence, no one can say that most young people in GenX carried themselves with grace. Drew Barrymore on Letterman in '95, Tonya Harding out for some blood, Kiss (the band), Cameron Diaz with her "unique" hairstyle in a certain movie- I could go on.
Would you say someone like Keira Knightley (a millennial) does not carry herself with grace? How about Emily Blunt (also a millennial)? Saying your generalizations remain valid is just you doubling down on an incorrect and arrogant assumption that all previous generations were blessed with grace, for... what purpose? To make yourself feel better? Millennials/Gen Z are in the comment section in such rapt admiration of these two actors, or cracking jokes (one of the two). All positive vibes, except for the usual Boomer/GenX mutterings of negativity and gatekeeping, for no reason at all. A real shame.

MerriLoughlin also back then, people werent aware of the effects of smoking, so there wasnt a lot of hate for it
yeah, he keeping looking modestly down as he talks vs appearing arrogant.
She is just drinking water
@@saintboot8410 I thought it was orange juice. Why do you think it's booze? She seems too young and gentle to be drinking alcohol; is there a reason to think it is? (I only watched the first 5 minutes, though.)
The camera quality doesn’t look that old
It was shot on film. Film kept in good condition and a great digital transfer will look fantastic.
It’s been restored and improved
You must be confused with someone's personal vhs footage of an old 60s show.
Nice pfp!
the 60's film wasn't that bad or grainy... you're thinking 40's lol
They were both absolutely amazing in Romero and Julliet.
I'll never forget it. Beautiful film. Zeffirelli made another of my favourites, "Brother Sun Sister Moon". Genius, beautiful productions and acting.
I can't stop staring at Olivia Hussey's face. So mesmerizing.
Yes, she’s so beautiful. Like an angel.
She's a child...you weirdos
@@sratus what... there just appreciating her beauty
@@sratus So are cherubim, doesn't make them not angels does it?
She looks Italian
For being only 17, Whiting is very articulate and poised.

Zeffirelli's next project after Romeo and Juliet should have been to do another Shakespeare dramatisation into film (casting Olivia and Leonard again into leading roles) for example either "As you like it", "Midsummer Nights Dream" or "Much Ado about Nothing" could have been used for this. Not all actors are able to do Shakespeare, but Olivia and Leonard do it so brilliantly and naturally its such a shame Zeffirelli did not do another Shakespeare with the magical Olivia/Leonard formula.
The greatest Romeo and Juliet adaptation to date! Whiting and Hussey were just perfection!
he looks like a more attractive zac effron
Yeah more of a model face
That accent makes it more attractive
Zac efforn is so atratctiv becouse he islittel agly
yes 😂
Yes! I was about to write about him which look like Zac Efron.👍😍
Her eyes just sparkle gorgeously through out the whole interview
She is just devastatingly Beautiful
right😭😭
She still looks exactly the same today. She is so lovely 🥰
Just because champagne
But He was drop dead gorgeous
She is.
Amazing how composed they are at such a young age. The chemistry is between them is dancing with joy, so at ease. Great interview.
3:16 she says "sometimes, depends" on whether they have to do a lot of takes. Her actual first scene shot was when Juliet runs into Paris in the crypt. She did laps around the set to get all agitated, told the director to trust her and nailed the scene on the first take.
These two actors have good chemistry and no matter how many times they put out a new movie with different actors, Olivia and Leonard will always be the best leads in the Romeo & Juliet movie.
Totally agree!!
and dont forget genious work of Dzeffirelli (sorry if i put it down wrong)
Leonardo docaprio
No comparison. Perfect.
@@adolflenin4973 * First
The resemblance is UNCANNY Zac Efron could totally play this guy in a biopic if he wanted to
He also looks an awful lot the young man who was in that movie Trans America, with Felicity Huffman. He played Felicity's son.
Crazy Gemini Kevin Zegers
Yeah young Zac Efron could play him in a movie but not current Zac Efron
And yet somehow he played Matthew Perry instead. Then freaking Ted Bundy who doesn't even deserve to be remembered.

Yay! I'm so glad I found this full interview! I could only ever find part of it
I was born the year 1968 when this movie was made and when I was a young adult got to see it on TV. I love their demeanor, so calm, and mature. Too bad it didn’t work out for them to marry in real life. Their chemistry was phenomenal. 💖💖💖💖I loved the movie, the passion and the musical score too.
honestly they look so modern, this could easily be a 2019 interview
...except that they're articulate and polite, no one curses and she's not dressed like a stripper in search of a pole. And these are two TEENAGERS.
Contrast that with the vacuous exchanges that pass for dialogue on pretty much any media outlet other than PBS, and you can tell this from another generation.
yes but today it would be more like Kanye West and Miley Cirus . I can't picture them allowing the other to finish a sentence.
Well i suppose the term of an interview back then was the same as it is now..
@Jason Strom uh relax
@@texasred2702 uh no bc we don't sexualize ourselves
From imdb facts - Olivia Hussey later said that the studio told her she would have to appear very much like Juliet in all press interviews too. *She rebelled in one famous interview, where she tied her hair back, lit a cigarette and sipped a glass of mimosa for the whole fifteen minutes.*
which probably explains that sneaky smile at 5:33. she made it a point to show she was not stuck in that character to prevent her career from ending right then and there
But guys! She was only 15 or 16!!! How could this happen on the television? It’s direct propaganda of smoking among teenagers 😤🤬
@@UEkaterina you’re joking right? it was 1968
@@fighterflight no I’m not. I wasn’t born yet then and I’m aware that smoking was ridiculously popular. But! In this case she was 15!! She hasn’t reached majority age yet and I don’t think that in 1968 laws were so different (wiki even says majority age was 21 in England and then it was reduced to 18 in 1969). Anyways it looks disgusting to me no matter what year it is.
@@UEkaterina Bruh in the 50s the cigs were adv like good for health even lol So ye no one really cared that much about it in those days

I like how at 9:50 Olivia was being ask when did she start smoking and Leonard just grabs her drink ,Takes a sip and then gives it back like if nothing happen 😭

They seem to share an intimacy between them. I am not insinuating they were lovers in real life but it certainly feels that way to me.

this interviews are like a medical appointment with the doctor
lol yeah I see that
The journalism is professional and interview is informative and formal. Interesting interviewer. It's brilliant.
The era where "movie star" and "actor" are completely two different things.
I still can't see the difference
His answer was at 7:13
_"Movie stars _*_are_*_ actors, but in jobs I think there's a great difference."_
There's not a difference in skill, there is a difference in employment. He might have suggested there are more opportunities of being an actor than of being cast in a film. It probably has an economic meaning.
@@GloriamMonarchia thanks!
@@erikeriks you're ever so welcome.
@@GloriamMonarchia I noticed you like violin music. You enjoy classical music, I suggest only violin music but I might be wrong. You like Vsauce, Andre Rieu, but you'd also have some Alvaro Soler at any given time. There's a possibility you have some connection with Japan, you speak the language or live there or something? And you really like educational channels. Oh yeah and you also might have the same connection with Germany, you speak German or something. You enjoy Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey, but then again you really like classical music. Am I correct, or not?
A pretty honest interview. She looked at him constantly, so they formed some sort of attachment, which happens with performers all the time. They are both amazingly photogenic. I saw the movie when it was released and they were terrific.
I loved them both when I went to see the movie also when it was released.
