"I'm not your little boy anymore, Dad. I've grown up, I've got my own life now!" "I know that! I just wanted to be part of it." Just this 2 lines are why Goofy Movie understand parents-children relationship better than any other movies
What I love about this movie is that Roxanne actually fell for Max when she heard him laugh. She wasn't attracted to his stunts even though she was impressed by them, she thought his laugh, the same laugh he always hated because he connotated it to his father, was cute.
The epilogue where Max confesses to Roxanne that he lied to her is also super good. He confesses he lied because he wanted her to like him, she tells him she already did from the first time she heard him laugh, imitating his Father’s laugh that max let out earlier in the film. Max was afraid of becoming his father especially getting his laugh. Not knowing that Roxanne found it to be his most charming quality. A sense of Irony but also telling a moral lesson of don’t be afraid of who you are.
It's also a good lesson about accepting that how we view ourselves does not equal how others view us. No one can hate you more than you hate yourself typically.
I like how "A movie where the villain is a family member, and the story resolves the struggle by having the family members work out their issues together" has seen a sudden resurgence in the last couple years.
Like hearing Woody is the villain or Daniel Larusso from The Karate Kid is actually the bad guy. They really don't make movies like they used to cause those are some mind fucks.
Naw.G the true mind fuck is watching this as a kid, seeing yourself as Max, then watching this later on, with your own kid, and seeing yourself as Goofy. 😳

It is funny. I came here cause I just watched the Atlanta mockumentary episode 'The Goof That Sat By The Door', and one of the characters says a line that alludes to a parent having to accept that their child will never be as loved in the outside world as they are by them. I loved this movie as a kid in the 90's and I always sympathised with Max. Now as a dad; I totally felt that in my soul and can totally sympathise with Goofy.
The talk with pete and goofy on their different single father parenting styles. goofy saying "my son loves me" and Pete saying "well my son respects me." Chills everytime
The thing is, I agree with both and understand both. However, that love and respect needs to be a two-way street, which, like this glorious UA-camr explained, was demonstrated well in the compromise song.
Pete isn't a single father. Peg just isn't in the movie. From a Disney wiki... "Despite being prominent characters in Goof Troop, neither Peg nor Pistol appear in either A Goofy Movie or An Extremely Goofy Movie. In 2020, A Goofy Movie director Kevin Lima revealed on Twitter that Peg and Pistol may indeed have originally been included in an early draft of the film, but were cut as the story began to focus more on how well Goofy and Max contrasted with Pete and P.J., to the point that everyone else (including Peg and Pistol) became a distraction from the dynamic of the two father-son pairs. Lima further explained that "AGM is a father son story. Pete and PJ’s father/son trip (having to always one up Goofy) is a nightmare mirror of Goofy and Max’s emotional journey. Peg and Pistol muddied that intention." This decision to focus on Max and Goofy (as well as Peg and Pistol's absence from A Goofy Movie in the first place) is most likely why the two were also not in An Extremely Goofy Movie."

@vctjkhme On the flip side, I think the greater emotional hurdle that a single parent/father-son relationship presents gives a stronger moral pay off. That even in the midst of statistically challenging odds, a father and son can still come together and live a good life.
If anything, this movie was the PEAK of Goofy's character. He's happy go lucky, he's upbeat, but they treat him seriously as a character, like a believable person. He's generally got a chipper attitude, but when he thinks Max could wind up in the electric chair, he's horrified. When he finds out Max may have lied, he's sad- almost depressed, and when max chooses california and confirms his suspicions... he's mad. Not even old fashioned 'Goofy yelling at people in traffic' mad. Genuinely, believably, furious with his son. Goofy has NEVER again really been given that range of emotions and it's a shame. It's one of the reasons I still like the movie so much.
Rewatching it as an adult, watching Goofy getting disheartened is heartbreaking. Likewise, the part where he's visibly pissed off, betrayed, and disappointed all at once is anxiety-inducing--literally the exact range of emotions you never want to see from a parent! Those aren't funny scenes as you'd expect from Goofy's historical rep. Those are real, gutwrenching moments that make Goofy human, despite being a weirdly sentient anthropomorphic cartoon dog guy.
The inclusion of real-life songs in movies has long been criticized as a marketing move done either because the peole making the movie don't have enough creativity to come up with their own musical numbers, or they want to reach out to a specific audience that's from the generation when those songs were popular, immediately dating the movie. However, the inclusion of the classic Bee Gees song "Stayin' Alive" that plays on the cassette player that Bigfoot dances to adds so much more to the nuance of the film. First of all, because the song comes from a generation that isn't the 90s, it doesn't restrict the movie to that time period. Second of all, because it comes from an era that doesn't belong to the protagonist, it highlights the disconnect between Max and his father and heightens the tension between their generational disconnect as they're trapped in the car and don't use that opportunity to come to terms with each other. Third of all, the title of the song is a perfect representation of the situation Max and Goofy are stuck in. Not only are they trying to stay alive during an attack by Bigfoot, but as their road trip gets more and more tense, they struggle to stay alive as the movie puts them in more and more dangerous situations trying to test their immortality. By the time the silence of this period of the movie, Max and Goofy's struggling relationship, and the increasingly more tense atmosphere culminate in the car falling into the river, Max and Goofy have proven that they can stay alive, which perfectly segues into the return to the musical format, as their confidence has been increased and they feel they can talk things out.
This movie is the first time I saw a single parent raising a child on Disney movies. It is very special to me because it reminds me how my mom (a single mom with a huge heart) and I, used to travel around, listen music together in the car and learning to listen to each others, Goofy always reminds me of her. I LOVE THIS MOVIE
It is a sweet sentiment I mean to in no way take away from it, since A Goofy Movie is quite centred on the relationship between the parent and the child, but there are many other single parents in Disney movies and you have probably seen them even if it was later than this one. Cinderella has one step-mom, Belle has her father, Jasmine has her father, the Sultan, Rapunzel was raised by her fake mother and Ariel has her father, King Triton. There are more examples and some main characters lack parents altogether (Tarzan and Mowgli) or get parents in a later instalment (Aladin). The relationship between parent and child is also often explored in these properties but what sets A Goofy Movie apart is just how heartfelt it is by making us see the perspective of both sides, you know so we can see eye-to-eye ey?
It also contains one of the best, most powerful lines of dialogue ever in a Disney movie: Max: I'm NOT your little boy anymore, Dad! I'm grown up! I have my own life now! Goofy: *I know that! I just wanted to be PART of it.* That line melts me.
15:14 What I love about “a girl worth fighting for” is that while the soldiers are singing the girl in question is a romantic interest but, once they find the doll the “girl worth fighting for” is the child who had the doll and the horrible loss of life she represents.
That is both sweet yet tragic at the same time because one could imply that yes while it is a love song at first glance but when you see the destruction and the horror and the doll then it becomes a subtle revenge song and it motivates one further to avenge the loss of life
There's also a more subtle aspect of the compromise and communication aspect of the film during the montage. Like with Goofy only showing stuff he liked making Max not enjoy the trip, Max doing stuff only he liked involves Goofy not having fun himself. After Max realizes this, and brings Goofy to that Yarn House, they both start doing a mix of stuff they both like, which makes them both enjoy their vacation after that.
Another thing i consider noteworthy is that the sequel is one of few disney sequels that remembers the lessons learned When goofy is messing up his college experience, Max doesn't just complain, he brings it to his attention, and afterwards Goofy lets Max handle his own college experience, as Goofy handles his

Fun fact: Powerline’s songs are actually performed by a Tevin Campbell; who was a hit singer as a child and appeared in an early episode of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air where he sung Ashley Banks (played by Tatyana Ali) a song for her birthday. His debut single was a song called “Round and Round” for Princes 3rd movie, “Under the Graffiti Bridge” which contained numerous members of his new musical ensemble “New Power Generation” or NPG. NPG had a member called Rosie Gaines who can be heard on Princes “Diamond and Pearls” and alsoooo, on background vocals of “I2I”. But he did end up with Roxanne. She admitted she had already liked him, he kissed her, she agreed to wait until the next day to go on a date, and then Max introduced her to his dad without a shred of embarrassment. It was a sweet resolution showing how mature Max had grown.
Goofy: “He loves me” Pete: “Hey, my son respects me” That whole motel scene is great; it’s such a serious and tense scene, even from Disney standards. Sure, Disney made some really serious scenes in movies, but not as realistic as this. Just seeing Goofy and Pete having this tense adult conversation about parenting is so crazy, but yet it’s brilliant because we’ve been used to seeing them in wacky situations and adventures. Even the scene where Goofy enters his car to see if his son really changed the map, but tries to fight it out because he still gains his trust on Max; but then, the glove compartment suddenly opens which reveals the map that’s inside it. Goofy returns to his motel room with a distraught look on his face because he now finally knows the truth that all this time, he had been lied to. Like I said, such a great and emotionally tense scene.
Though Pete was right you can still the disconnect between him and his son ...because yes your son respects you but does he love you like Goofysaid max did

Max wanting to stand out is actually a major part of who he is. Even in the other Goofy movies, he always wants to do something to stand apart from the crowd. In An Extremely Goofy Movie, it's wanting to win the X-games and possibly become a pro athlete. And it's even better because he isn't doing it to impress a girl or anything, cuz he's doesn't get a love interest in that movie. It's soley JUST because he wants to make a living doing what he loves.
This movie is perfect because when you're young, you are totally on Max's side. When you grow old, you begin to see the things like Goofy and thus the circle is complete and you become a better parent.
I always got both sides of it, even as a kid; Goofy clearly loves Max, and I'm pretty sure Max never even doubted that for a second. (P.J.'s opinion of Pete, however...) But in his well-meaning, he was getting in the way of Max growing up instead of helping it along, while Max reacted by basically trying to shut Goofy out, both with disastrous consequences. It was always knee-jerk reaction vs. knee-jerk reaction, Goofy trying to keep Max safe vs. Max trying to win at life, and both of them drawing conclusions and making decisions before the other could even speak, and it always ended up making things worse. Then they started talking, and things got better. (And I deleted what came after in this paragraph because I realized I was just recapping the movie for a bunch of people that have already seen it even more than I have.) The big lesson of the movie: communication is not just important, it's vital. Don't just talk about "what," talk about "why." On all sides of a relationship. And lying isn't communicating.
Honestly, that makes me wanna see a slice of life anime about a Howard Ashman-esque music teacher. Something like Sound Euphonium in a way except with more on singing/musicals.
I was a kid when I watched it last, and I enjoyed it enough to watch a second time so it must’ve been really good, considering it’s target audience was children and as a child I enjoyed it. Also what a random movie to talk about

Rewatching this movie as an adult and realizing that at its heart, it's a movie about the father-son dynamic, the son fighting for agency and the father not quite knowing how to let go. Brought me to tears.
Most of us saw these movies as kids and didn’t totally get the struggle of the parent figures, but now we’re growing and most of us are coming back as parents and showing it to their kids, and it hits us like a ton of bricks.
I’m not crying, you’re crying!! Lmao But yeah, it’s a timeless movie with a message that will NEVER leave humanity, period. I think that’s why it sticks with our generation the most and hopefully generations after. Meaningful story.
One of my favorite little touches in musical numbers is when multiple characters have solos in the same verse of a song, it's just super cool to see characters respond to each other within the song and express their (sometimes conflicting) ideologies and goals. And one of my all time favorite instances of this is in After Today when Max sings, "I've got less than an hour, and when this is ended, I'll either be famous," only for the principal to finish the verse with "Or you'll be suspended." It's just such a great, efficient way to introduce us to both the principal and his conflict with Max while seamlessly keeping up the energy of the song. Anyway great analysis as always!

And yeah I 100% agree, I feel like not enough musicals do that even though it’s such a effective way of differentiating the characters from eachother and actually could be more effective in showing what a character wants than a I want song, because in comparing their desires with another character their “want” sticks out, even more so if the other character wants something completely different
My favorite thing about this movie is actually that Roxanne clearly does like Max. She expresses interest genuinely in who he is, and his mission to impress her comes from his own insecurities. "Doesn't even end up with" isn't accurate: Max recognizes that he needs to do some personal growth, and Roxanne lets him know she's still open to a relationship whenever he's ready.
I could be mistaken, but I assumed he was referring to the fact that in "Mickey's Twice Upon A Christmas," Max is older and comes home for the holidays with a different woman as his significant other.

In Ducktales season 3 in the episode "Quack Pack" Goofy makes a surprise appearance and shows the pictures in his wallet of Max and their vacations, and one of the photos just happens to include Max and Roxanne going to prom together. Its not a big detail to go off of, but I'd like to think they had more than just what happened in the movie
They did split up when they went to college, but according to an episode of House of Mouse featuring the couple, they got back together. Which is nice :)

This movie is NOT better than I remember, because I still remember it as one of the best children's focused movies I have ever seen. I was obsessed with this movie. I haven't seen the movie in so about 20 years, I was still singing along and remember all of the lyrics. All you did was explain why I enjoyed the movie so much.
I really think this movie is one of the most self-aware about its own era. It is so extremely categorically stereotypical of its own cultural moment, even in its own Disney optimism, it almost breaks the 4th wall in being a portrait of its time. This movie could not be made, or set in, a different cultural moment, and there's something magical in that.
Fun Fact Disney originally wanted this film to be a little darker to the point of changing Goofy voice, ether by making Bill Farmer sound more normal or replacing him Steve Martin. Thankfully that didn't happen, but woo that was a close one.
Ya, it’s the same thing with Coco (Sideways already did the video). But the fact that a movie made how many years ago did this so perfectly without even trying is just the best flex of any movie.
hmmm maybe the artists way of getting back at the big mouse?? Maybe this is a staple tease they use for their films; how animation is the heart of Disney Magic and it can be fogged up by its corporate giant identity. It's still a positive note, to say the least; reinforcing the beauty of Disney Magic.
To be fair, Ashman fucking nailed it with "Belle" as _Beauty and the Beast's_ opening song. It has literally everything you need to move into the story and is just straight-up wonderful to listen to, with the liveliness of the town in the background, Belle's endless enthusiasm and charisma, and even Gaston's pompous asshole-itude. It's also _veeeeery easily_ my favorite song in the movie =D .
You can watch this as a kid and relate to Max. Then you can re-watch it 20 - 30 years later and relate to Goofy. This is basically 2 movies in one depending on how you watch it.
Surprised you didn't mention this with the whole "nostalgia time-bomb" bit, but I wouldn't be shocked if a lot of recent love for this movie comes from seeing its messages in a new light now that we're older. Like there are plenty of kids who watched this growing up who are now parents themselves, or who now just appreciate and understand their parents more than they did when they were young. I know this is pretty common when it comes to re-watching any almost any movie with strong parent-child themes now that you're older, but it really hits hard with this one
Goofy is the misguided antagonist, than an actual villain. Goofy tried what he thought would bring him and his son closer, but it only lead to further divide before they both came to the realization that they needed to do what the last two songs explain. Goofy thought he was being a father(the hero). Which makes him a good antihero antagonist, and a good example of a caring parent. Edit: As his first song shows he was worried about where his son was heading in life.
Not to mention the whole roadmap is a representation of stable life. All the Goofy family has done it so it must be right, But Max changing it to fit his life, and Goofy having to learn to accept it. Still being the car, yet Max is the one navigating from now on.
Goofy is an antagonist, but not out of his own volition. It's a mix of Max *seeing* him that way, and him being manipulated by first the Principal, then Pete. It's a really nuanced way of doing an antagonist, and hence, the really nuanced way that the conflict is resolved. Goofy's not even entirely in the wrong, either, which is usually the case with incredibly low-stakes family conflicts like a vacation. He's just...Goofy, and whatever minor conflict he has in life, you know it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better. It's kind of his whole thing.
@@nerdorama009 Goofy definitely contributes to his own part of the antagonism by not listening to Max and forcing his won worldview onto him. I adore this movie and its message but I'm not onboard for people completely absolving Goofy of his own fuck ups.
@@justsomenuts Completely agree, a simple discussion with Max about what had happened at school would have prevented the entirety of the movie (hence why it didn't happen) but it is what was necessary. As a parent you should always get your child's side of things whenever something happens BEFORE you make any drastic decisions.

I LOVE the music in Tarzan AND the fact that the characters don't sing most of the songs. It's similar to the music in Bolt, which has one of my favorite musical sequences with Barking at the Moon. It feels less dramatic and more real to me just the way that playing music feels in real life. If I burst into an I want song, people are going to think I'm insane, but I can play Strangers Like Me and feel the meaning the same way I feel it watching Tarzan or Treasure Planet or Lilo and Stitch. Maybe it's just the way movies were when I was growing up, but Tarzan and Brother Bear are two of my all time favorite movies/soundtracks to this day

I can't really argue with it, either. Having just rewatched this the other day after, shit, twenty years, it's not only just as good as I remembered it but even better; I loved it. This video just reinforced a lot of what makes it so good. I do have to say that a couple movies give it a run for its money, though. The Brave Little Toaster, Homeward Bound:The Incredible Journey, and the first Toy Story are all absolute bangers.
Never disagreed with either. This is something I want for people to know more (maybe I'll make a video, eh) but this movie has much more effective understanding of cartoon storytelling than Lion King or Pocahontas does. The animation handles some beautiful natural characterizations on alive mannerisms fused to how cartoons work. How for some reason Disney needs to waste millions making this horrible real life movie CGI shows, for people to appreciate more the original films (which is, sad) The animation language is THERE- no "I want to be X because he did this and X" but "HEY. I like Goofy. How do Goofy physics function in a cartoon?" I could make a whole video, but to me, unlike all other Ren movies- this is an original idea. To me, the way Disney functions- that is a full acomplishment. Fun Fact: I had the comic adaptation of this movie. The moment when Goofy discovers Max's plot, the panel contains a "Noooooooo!" bubble. Imagine if that was included, the impact on Goofy's sad (just, plain, bold sadness) moment would've dissapeared.
I've barely even started the vid but I clicked as soon as I saw someone paying this movie the respect it deserves. All I'll say is, as someone who currently works in Hollywood, I CONSTANTLY refer to this movie when meeting with writers
The cut off in "a girl worth fighting for" is pivotal! PIVOTAL! In the "wow factor" presentation for the young mind watching Mulan, experiencing the effects of War for the first time. The fact that their cheery happy song is CUT OFF by death and destruction is what sells the sense of foreboding curiosity for the young mind who is seeing this for the first time. Even as an adult, the emotional and audio weight that is lifted, to reveal the oblivion of greed and lust for power in the hearts of humans, is still bone chilling to this day tbh.
Yeah his take on that wasn’t hot lol. I think the sudden cut was unexpected and demonstrated that the shock of experiencing actual war given that the group hadn’t actually fought yet. The seriousness of what it happening around them sets in as it does for the audience. It’s sombering and was structured in a way even a kid could resonate with. The whiplash of it made you pay attention and made it even more heartbreaking.
Maybe I misunderstood but I think the part of Mulan that he disagrees with isn't the dramatic cutoff of 'a girl worth fighting for' to show the devastation but instead the choice to not include any new musical numbers after it. He says "I get why they cut all the music, for dramatic effect and to add some seriousness to the show" I agree that it kind of feels like the movie went dark with the tone and dropped the musical numbers to match but it not like after 'a girl worth fighting for' it turns into saving private ryan, hell the side characters are dressed in drag during the climactic battle. They even skipped a closing number that could have kept a sober tone for a movie that is still about war but also provided some relief and closure to the end of the story. Just my two cents lol

Notice how when max is always in trouble or in crisis(needing to get to school on time, or needs to improvise the dance number) things always play out so he comes out on top. Despite both situations beginning to progress to be even more insane as the scenes continue.(he does a Ferris Buller through the neighborhood to get to school and his friends tie him to a pulley system that wraps around the gym.) Some would simply say he is a 90s protagonist and it’s animated kids cartoon but watch it again. This is all thanks to his DAD!!! Look at classic goofy cartoons and watch how in each moment the episodes get more outlandish putting goofy into crazier feats of surviving danger. Max is just sticking the landing smoothly unlike his dad showing how he is different from his father. But the skills to actually survive those improvised stunts comes from having one of animations most amazing stuntmen as his father. Whether the stunts are all just a cartoon or you accept a in universe world doesn’t matter.
That comment made me think of "who framed roger rabbit" and Roger's adoration of goofy as the greatest stunt toon who ever lived and the implications of that tie-in on max's life are pretty amazing! He's the son of one of the most famous toons in history.
It's in my top films of all time and I'm a film nerd. There was so much love put into this project and you can feel it. It made me as a kid and still makes me feel such strong, powerful emotions. This would DESTROY as a Broadway musical.

I think another big part of the nostalgia is that when we were younger we saw the movie much more from Maxes point of view. Now that we’re older we tend to see things from the adult characters points of view; thinking about Ariel I can’t help myself, “oh no, you need to stay at home. What are you, 16?! Listen to your father”. Seeing this movie as an adult and seeing Goofys viewpoint of looking out for his child (add in to that, a lot of us have lost family members since childhood) and we can empathize with the “antagonist” and still feel good about ourselves because of the compromise/resolution at the end. I lost my mom in 2020, and when I was younger I was embarrassed by her a lot, she was Goofy to me; rewatching this after she was gone I sobbed so hard because as an adult I found ways to have a relationship with my mom that didn’t leave me feeling embarrassed and I know now more than ever how important family is and I wish life was like this movie we’re one song in childhood could have cleared so much stuff up much earlier on. Sorry I’m rambling, this video somehow really touched me in the feels.
I just realized something. Normally, I hate musicals. Not the film itself, but normally I dislike that every 12 seconds we need to hear this guy gush about how awful his job is or about the girl he likes. But I loved the goofy movie. Honestly, I never actually noticed that it was a musical. Goofy movie is probably THE best Disney mascot-based film. I like or am ambivalent toward musicals and I forgot this was a musical. I think it's just a testament to how integrated and plot-relevant the songs are. In other musicals, the guy sings a "this girl hot" song because that's just what's expected. It doesn't have any impact on the story or teach us anything interesting about the characters.
I like musicals as long as there's plenty of normal dialogue. I really don't like musical like Hamilton or Les Mis. Technically the movie Cats as well, but I don't think even a regular script could save that glorious dumpster fire (though one of the most enjoyable "omfg what were they thinking" movies).

Another thing of what makes this movie so great is why we all love Home Alone 1&2 so much. It paints a world so vividly from the point of view of a kid. With everyone singing about how everything is going to be better and theyll be free soon as summer break hits, the pure dread in the office, and being helpless strung along by the whims of your parents, even though you want no part of it so youre stuck grumbling "this is stupid" until you get back home and tell them you never want to see them again. It makes you feel like you're a kid again at Max's age.
I'm a professional singer who married a pianist. My mom is completely unversed in music. She knows nothing about the structures, rhythms, etc. She loves listening to her favorite bands but has no deeper appreciation for WHY those songs move her. Conclusions about Katzenburg: He came to Disney without any clue how animation was supposed to work, learned from his failures (and others' successes), and remained a petty businessman who learned the value of good advice.
I guess he's a jerk, but not arrogant about it. He'll accept he was wrong and back someone who has shown they know what they're doing, but he has to be convinced. If he's not convinced he'll remain petty about it.
I've only really heard the bad things, like treasure planet (breadsword), or Aladin (lindsay ellis). it's rare to hear that he actually did something nice for someone.
Honestly, I think the only reason he was nice to Ashman was because K knew about all the money he could get out of Ashman’s talent. And weren’t Treasure Planet, Megamind, and Shrek all expected to be D-list flicks and just ignored by the higher ups, including K, at the time? He wasn’t letting them blossom, he was ignoring them. Heck, Shrek was being made in the basement under the production for The Prince of Egypt, which was expected to be the real money maker. And Treasure Planet was deliberately planned and set up to fail by the execs.
In Portugal they fully translated this movie, songs inclueded and did a pretty really job. They even understood the importance of Max trying to distance himself from his fathers image, by making sure they used "Pateta" (Goofy's portuguese name and a possible translation of the word goofy) in the 2 times Max uses goof in "After Today". I loved this movie as a kid, and was pleasantly surprised that this movie is getting attention all these years later. Edit: My bad, they didnt translate any of the PowerLine songs

I feel like the real “Time Bomb" of this film is that we all grew up viewing this film as Max. Now we see it through the lens of Goofy and it's a completely different film.
I dunno. As a kid I 100% sided with Goofy and thought Max was being an asshole. Then as a teenager, I thought, yeah, I can kinda see where Max is coming from. And now as an adult, I can appreciate Max's desire for independence, but definitely still side with Goofy and admire him even more for what he has done for his son. It's awesome how this movie changes as a person ages.
On your last point - what's really significant of the nostalgic power here is that this was the ONLY 90s in-theatres Disney animated film to be set in the present day, 1995. And although it's not technically part of the Renaissance as it wasn't made by the flagship Disney animation studio, at the time it was only one of two animated Disney films to do that EVER going all the way back to Snow White. The other one was Oliver and Company, which was kind of the last straw of the pre-Ren dark age of Disney animation, and still an adaptation of a classic well-known work. So Goofy Movie was the only original story set in the present day they'd ever made, and I don't think that would happen again till like...maybe Wreck it Ralph? It was also set in its country of origin, the USA. So with every other Renaissance movie surrounding it essentially a period piece set in a far off land like Ancient Greece or African Savannahs, this was incredibly unique, even for viewers who had watched plentiful amounts of Disney's animated catalog. And with that familiar setting it became 100x more relatable to audiences, bolstering it's nostalgia factor, which would only grow at an especially high rate over the next 15 years or so since nothing else Disney animation put out even tried to go down that path again. And that's what really made A Goofy Movie.....stand out.
"Lilo and Stitch," "Bolt," and parts of "Meet the Robinsons" were set in the modern day, and "Chicken Little" arguably was as well. All of those came out between "A Goofy Movie" and "Wreck-It Ralph." It is still fairly rare.
This movie, like "Treasure Planet", was totally ignored because the focus was on male bonding. In both situations, more specifically, we have a young man learning from a father or father figure. Both were masterpieces.

@Why Me Extremely Goofy Movie, Max and his friends graduate, go to college, but Roxanne's not there with them. Considering the DuckTales series is a reboot, not a sequel, that may or may not be part of the new canon. Either way, Max becomes an extreme sports star while Goofy and PJ get the girls instead.

I'm 17 and used to watch this on VHS in my grandma's basement as a kid. While I didn't grow up with a lot of the nostalgic things featured in the film it still makes me feel that way. This was more from around the time my uncles were in high school. Nevertheless, it gives me warm feelings and memories of being a kid. I absolutely can relate to the film and appreciate it more now that I'm not of dino nuggie age. I know you probably won't see this comment because this is a year-old video but I can't thank you enough for making this. I'm definitely gonna see if my grandma has this and get it and the VHS player from her if she does. Thanks for making my day.
I also liked that at the end of the movie we get a demonstration of Max and Goofy's new understanding of compromise. Goofy lets his son be more independent, and Max introduces Roxanne to Goofy, letting his father be directly involved in his life. Ending the movie on that scene is another stroke of brilliance, because it ties a neat little bow on the entire premise of the movie and shows just how far the two have come. Also, Max and Roxanne are adorable and it sucks they left her out of the sequel.
The second movie hurts. I like the aspect of Goofy going back to school to make a better life for himself now that Max is in college and likely moving out after he graduates. But they completely destroyed the character development Max has in the first movie by going back and being a complete ass to Goofy again. When Max says "Leave me alone and get your own life" to Goofy it throws out the entirety of Nobody Else But You and turns it into Nothing Else Matters. Am Extremely Goody movie has 2 villian. Bradley obviously and Max Goof and I hate that Disney did Max and Goofy dirty like that. I showed my gf those movies when we first got together because she showed me her favorite Disney films and I hadn't seen them in years. I remember why I loved the first one and the new perspective I have watching it as an adult. And although I loved the second as a kid my gf and I talked about it after I said, "That was not good. This aged terribly." And a lot of it had to do with watching it as an adult with a new perspective.
I saw this as a senior in high school with my then best friend. We loved the Goof Troop TV show so we went to this as 2 seventeen year olds in a theater full of 6 year olds and their uninterested parents. And the two of us were laughing out loud and having the best time of anybody in the theater. We loved this movie, and Adam and I going to see this is one of those memories that I'll carry with me till my dying day.
Another factor: Remember how you said that "Depending on how you look at it, Goofy is the villain"? What makes "On the Open Road" even better is as you get older, you can easily look at it in the other direction, with MAX equally being the villain for impeding Goofy's attempts to bond with his son. It's not just a villain song for Goofy, it's also a villain song for Max too. It can easily go either way and that just makes it even better than before. It could be Max's attempts to get to impress Roxanne or maybe Goofy is the protagonist and the film is about Goofy coming to terms with Max growing up and wanting to remain a part of his son's life.
Nice. This movie does well with getting you to empathize with both the protagonist - Max and Antagonist - Goofy. Your conception of the On The Open Road song is accurate because this movie is an honest look at struggling parent-child relationships, albeit through a fun and whimsical lens. Both sides hold equal measure as protagonist and main character of their own story arcs within a single movie.
It's the parent's responsibility to set the rules in a relationship. Max is not "Equally" a villain in this, he's rebelling against imposition and up to this point is acting reasonable in such circumstances with his father.
I saw this movie in the theater with my dad twice when I was about 7 years old. Needless to say, it was the perfect father-son film, and it became my favorite Disney movie of all time. So that's one thing you and I are in agreement on entirely. But there's one thing you mentioned about how Goofy is the antagonist of the movie, which I think can be expanded upon a little more. What I love about A Goofy Movie is that, depending on your age, the "villain" kind of changes. As a kid, I absolutely identified with Max. I wanted to be popular at school. I wanted to end up with the cute, shy girl. But most importantly, I *didn't* want to see him have to miss out on all of that to go on a vacation with Goofy. The world of high school kids having fun at a party during summer vacation was just too enticing, and I vividly remember the feeling of frustration I felt as a kid when the trip was proposed. As much as I loved Goofy, he absolutely felt like the antagonist. Cut to a few months ago, when my girlfriend and I watched it again in a marathon of watching and ranking our favorite animated Disney films. Even though we don't have kids ourselves... I found myself more on Goofy's side than Max. I've seen the hardships of being an adult firsthand. Of single parents trying to be there for their kids and be a part of their lives. Watching A Goofy Movie as an adult made me appreciate how hard Goofy tried for his son, and how unappreciative (for lack of a better term) Max is until they're compromise at the end. Max was the villain now, not only making it more difficult for his father to communicate with him, but fighting him every step of the way for his own selfish reasons. In the end, it's clear neither of them are the bad guy. They're just a father and son that have trouble understanding one another until they're able to speak openly and honestly from the heart. But I think it's why it's such a smart and powerful film in ways it doesn't get enough credit for. It speaks to you on different levels depending on where you are in life. It's why I'll always be thankful to my dad for the time we got to spend watching this together in that theater. I think I owe it to him to sit down and watch it together again someday.
Year late Im on Max side though he shouldnt be held with the same accountability he is still a kid and besides its not his job to communicate, its Goofy's hes the adult in fact he is the one who made everyyhing difficult. Doesnt help he still treats Max like hes 5 years old. He was the one acting on his own selfish reasons, not listening to his son when he tries to explain things, forcing to go on a vacation whether he wanted or not and not even getting to know Max own interests but instead pushing into stuff he dislikes to the point of humiliating him which Goofy was also oblivious to notice. Thats the big issue with how naive and immature he really is. Cant fault Max for not opening up anymore and its down to Goofy communicating until the end.

What I love about this movie is that Roxanne actually fell for Max when she heard him laugh. She wasn't attracted to his stunts even though she was impressed by them, she thought his laugh, the same laugh he always hated because he connotated it to his father, was cute.

The epilogue where Max confesses to Roxanne that he lied to her is also super good. He confesses he lied because he wanted her to like him, she tells him she already did from the first time she heard him laugh, imitating his Father’s laugh that max let out earlier in the film.
Max was afraid of becoming his father especially getting his laugh. Not knowing that Roxanne found it to be his most charming quality. A sense of Irony but also telling a moral lesson of don’t be afraid of who you are.

I never expected to see that kind of lesson. There is no fear to reveal yourself.
It's also a good lesson about accepting that how we view ourselves does not equal how others view us. No one can hate you more than you hate yourself typically.

It is funny. I came here cause I just watched the Atlanta mockumentary episode 'The Goof That Sat By The Door', and one of the characters says a line that alludes to a parent having to accept that their child will never be as loved in the outside world as they are by them.
I loved this movie as a kid in the 90's and I always sympathised with Max. Now as a dad; I totally felt that in my soul and can totally sympathise with Goofy.

@vctjkhme On the flip side, I think the greater emotional hurdle that a single parent/father-son relationship presents gives a stronger moral pay off.
That even in the midst of statistically challenging odds, a father and son can still come together and live a good life.
If anything, this movie was the PEAK of Goofy's character. He's happy go lucky, he's upbeat, but they treat him seriously as a character, like a believable person. He's generally got a chipper attitude, but when he thinks Max could wind up in the electric chair, he's horrified. When he finds out Max may have lied, he's sad- almost depressed, and when max chooses california and confirms his suspicions... he's mad. Not even old fashioned 'Goofy yelling at people in traffic' mad. Genuinely, believably, furious with his son. Goofy has NEVER again really been given that range of emotions and it's a shame. It's one of the reasons I still like the movie so much.
Rewatching it as an adult, watching Goofy getting disheartened is heartbreaking. Likewise, the part where he's visibly pissed off, betrayed, and disappointed all at once is anxiety-inducing--literally the exact range of emotions you never want to see from a parent! Those aren't funny scenes as you'd expect from Goofy's historical rep. Those are real, gutwrenching moments that make Goofy human, despite being a weirdly sentient anthropomorphic cartoon dog guy.

The inclusion of real-life songs in movies has long been criticized as a marketing move done either because the peole making the movie don't have enough creativity to come up with their own musical numbers, or they want to reach out to a specific audience that's from the generation when those songs were popular, immediately dating the movie. However, the inclusion of the classic Bee Gees song "Stayin' Alive" that plays on the cassette player that Bigfoot dances to adds so much more to the nuance of the film. First of all, because the song comes from a generation that isn't the 90s, it doesn't restrict the movie to that time period. Second of all, because it comes from an era that doesn't belong to the protagonist, it highlights the disconnect between Max and his father and heightens the tension between their generational disconnect as they're trapped in the car and don't use that opportunity to come to terms with each other. Third of all, the title of the song is a perfect representation of the situation Max and Goofy are stuck in. Not only are they trying to stay alive during an attack by Bigfoot, but as their road trip gets more and more tense, they struggle to stay alive as the movie puts them in more and more dangerous situations trying to test their immortality. By the time the silence of this period of the movie, Max and Goofy's struggling relationship, and the increasingly more tense atmosphere culminate in the car falling into the river, Max and Goofy have proven that they can stay alive, which perfectly segues into the return to the musical format, as their confidence has been increased and they feel they can talk things out.
I still reference that scene with my brother sometimes.

This movie is the first time I saw a single parent raising a child on Disney movies. It is very special to me because it reminds me how my mom (a single mom with a huge heart) and I, used to travel around, listen music together in the car and learning to listen to each others, Goofy always reminds me of her. I LOVE THIS MOVIE
It is a sweet sentiment I mean to in no way take away from it, since A Goofy Movie is quite centred on the relationship between the parent and the child, but there are many other single parents in Disney movies and you have probably seen them even if it was later than this one. Cinderella has one step-mom, Belle has her father, Jasmine has her father, the Sultan, Rapunzel was raised by her fake mother and Ariel has her father, King Triton. There are more examples and some main characters lack parents altogether (Tarzan and Mowgli) or get parents in a later instalment (Aladin). The relationship between parent and child is also often explored in these properties but what sets A Goofy Movie apart is just how heartfelt it is by making us see the perspective of both sides, you know so we can see eye-to-eye ey?
It also contains one of the best, most powerful lines of dialogue ever in a Disney movie:
Max: I'm NOT your little boy anymore, Dad! I'm grown up! I have my own life now!
Goofy: *I know that! I just wanted to be PART of it.*
That line melts me.

That is both sweet yet tragic at the same time because one could imply that yes while it is a love song at first glance but when you see the destruction and the horror and the doll then it becomes a subtle revenge song and it motivates one further to avenge the loss of life
There's also a more subtle aspect of the compromise and communication aspect of the film during the montage. Like with Goofy only showing stuff he liked making Max not enjoy the trip, Max doing stuff only he liked involves Goofy not having fun himself. After Max realizes this, and brings Goofy to that Yarn House, they both start doing a mix of stuff they both like, which makes them both enjoy their vacation after that.
It was just a movie of love. ❤
Another thing i consider noteworthy is that the sequel is one of few disney sequels that remembers the lessons learned

Illumination is rather hit and miss and I actually like most of the Despicable Me movies. They're also not so horrible as adult and teen cartoon stans made them out to be. The ridiculous internet detractors that I've seen are arguably much worse than the actual studio (and almost reminded me of the Star Wars fandom .__.).
Meanwhile you don't think how Disney decided to axe Blue Sky Studios (and Nimona in mid-production) and still wanted to make more Ice Age spinoffs isn't an example of shitting on the animation media?

Fun fact: Powerline’s songs are actually performed by a Tevin Campbell; who was a hit singer as a child and appeared in an early episode of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air where he sung Ashley Banks (played by Tatyana Ali) a song for her birthday.

That whole motel scene is great; it’s such a serious and tense scene, even from Disney standards. Sure, Disney made some really serious scenes in movies, but not as realistic as this. Just seeing Goofy and Pete having this tense adult conversation about parenting is so crazy, but yet it’s brilliant because we’ve been used to seeing them in wacky situations and adventures. Even the scene where Goofy enters his car to see if his son really changed the map, but tries to fight it out because he still gains his trust on Max; but then, the glove compartment suddenly opens which reveals the map that’s inside it. Goofy returns to his motel room with a distraught look on his face because he now finally knows the truth that all this time, he had been lied to. Like I said, such a great and emotionally tense scene.

Max wanting to stand out is actually a major part of who he is. Even in the other Goofy movies, he always wants to do something to stand apart from the crowd. In An Extremely Goofy Movie, it's wanting to win the X-games and possibly become a pro athlete. And it's even better because he isn't doing it to impress a girl or anything, cuz he's doesn't get a love interest in that movie. It's soley JUST because he wants to make a living doing what he loves.
This movie is perfect because when you're young, you are totally on Max's side. When you grow old, you begin to see the things like Goofy and thus the circle is complete and you become a better parent.

This related me, when I was a child - I used to be Max's side but when I grew older, I can understand Goofy as well.
I always got both sides of it, even as a kid; Goofy clearly loves Max, and I'm pretty sure Max never even doubted that for a second. (P.J.'s opinion of Pete, however...) But in his well-meaning, he was getting in the way of Max growing up instead of helping it along, while Max reacted by basically trying to shut Goofy out, both with disastrous consequences.
It was always knee-jerk reaction vs. knee-jerk reaction, Goofy trying to keep Max safe vs. Max trying to win at life, and both of them drawing conclusions and making decisions before the other could even speak, and it always ended up making things worse. Then they started talking, and things got better. (And I deleted what came after in this paragraph because I realized I was just recapping the movie for a bunch of people that have already seen it even more than I have.)
The big lesson of the movie: communication is not just important, it's vital. Don't just talk about "what," talk about "why." On all sides of a relationship. And lying isn't communicating.

I was a kid when I watched it last, and I enjoyed it enough to watch a second time so it must’ve been really good, considering it’s target audience was children and as a child I enjoyed it. Also what a random movie to talk about

Most of us saw these movies as kids and didn’t totally get the struggle of the parent figures, but now we’re growing and most of us are coming back as parents and showing it to their kids, and it hits us like a ton of bricks.

One of my favorite little touches in musical numbers is when multiple characters have solos in the same verse of a song, it's just super cool to see characters respond to each other within the song and express their (sometimes conflicting) ideologies and goals. And one of my all time favorite instances of this is in After Today when Max sings, "I've got less than an hour, and when this is ended, I'll either be famous," only for the principal to finish the verse with "Or you'll be suspended." It's just such a great, efficient way to introduce us to both the principal and his conflict with Max while seamlessly keeping up the energy of the song. Anyway great analysis as always!

And yeah I 100% agree, I feel like not enough musicals do that even though it’s such a effective way of differentiating the characters from eachother and actually could be more effective in showing what a character wants than a I want song, because in comparing their desires with another character their “want” sticks out, even more so if the other character wants something completely different
My favorite thing about this movie is actually that Roxanne clearly does like Max. She expresses interest genuinely in who he is, and his mission to impress her comes from his own insecurities. "Doesn't even end up with" isn't accurate: Max recognizes that he needs to do some personal growth, and Roxanne lets him know she's still open to a relationship whenever he's ready.
I could be mistaken, but I assumed he was referring to the fact that in "Mickey's Twice Upon A Christmas," Max is older and comes home for the holidays with a different woman as his significant other.

In Ducktales season 3 in the episode "Quack Pack" Goofy makes a surprise appearance and shows the pictures in his wallet of Max and their vacations, and one of the photos just happens to include Max and Roxanne going to prom together. Its not a big detail to go off of, but I'd like to think they had more than just what happened in the movie

This movie is NOT better than I remember, because I still remember it as one of the best children's focused movies I have ever seen. I was obsessed with this movie. I haven't seen the movie in so about 20 years, I was still singing along and remember all of the lyrics. All you did was explain why I enjoyed the movie so much.
Also remember at the end, Goofy sneaks into the concert with Max. He’s willing to do something rebellious to make his son happy.
I really think this movie is one of the most self-aware about its own era. It is so extremely categorically stereotypical of its own cultural moment, even in its own Disney optimism, it almost breaks the 4th wall in being a portrait of its time. This movie could not be made, or set in, a different cultural moment, and there's something magical in that.
It is so confidently self-aware that nobody cares. It's perfect.

Fun Fact Disney originally wanted this film to be a little darker to the point of changing Goofy voice, ether by making Bill Farmer sound more normal or replacing him Steve Martin. Thankfully that didn't happen, but woo that was a close one.

To be fair, Ashman fucking nailed it with "Belle" as _Beauty and the Beast's_ opening song. It has literally everything you need to move into the story and is just straight-up wonderful to listen to, with the liveliness of the town in the background, Belle's endless enthusiasm and charisma, and even Gaston's pompous asshole-itude.
It's also _veeeeery easily_ my favorite song in the movie =D .

Surprised you didn't mention this with the whole "nostalgia time-bomb" bit, but I wouldn't be shocked if a lot of recent love for this movie comes from seeing its messages in a new light now that we're older. Like there are plenty of kids who watched this growing up who are now parents themselves, or who now just appreciate and understand their parents more than they did when they were young. I know this is pretty common when it comes to re-watching any almost any movie with strong parent-child themes now that you're older, but it really hits hard with this one

Goofy is the misguided antagonist, than an actual villain. Goofy tried what he thought would bring him and his son closer, but it only lead to further divide before they both came to the realization that they needed to do what the last two songs explain. Goofy thought he was being a father(the hero). Which makes him a good antihero antagonist, and a good example of a caring parent.
Edit: As his first song shows he was worried about where his son was heading in life.
Not to mention the whole roadmap is a representation of stable life. All the Goofy family has done it so it must be right, But Max changing it to fit his life, and Goofy having to learn to accept it. Still being the car, yet Max is the one navigating from now on.

Goofy is an antagonist, but not out of his own volition. It's a mix of Max *seeing* him that way, and him being manipulated by first the Principal, then Pete. It's a really nuanced way of doing an antagonist, and hence, the really nuanced way that the conflict is resolved. Goofy's not even entirely in the wrong, either, which is usually the case with incredibly low-stakes family conflicts like a vacation. He's just...Goofy, and whatever minor conflict he has in life, you know it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better. It's kind of his whole thing.
@@nerdorama009 Goofy definitely contributes to his own part of the antagonism by not listening to Max and forcing his won worldview onto him. I adore this movie and its message but I'm not onboard for people completely absolving Goofy of his own fuck ups.
@@justsomenuts Completely agree, a simple discussion with Max about what had happened at school would have prevented the entirety of the movie (hence why it didn't happen) but it is what was necessary. As a parent you should always get your child's side of things whenever something happens BEFORE you make any drastic decisions.

I LOVE the music in Tarzan AND the fact that the characters don't sing most of the songs. It's similar to the music in Bolt, which has one of my favorite musical sequences with Barking at the Moon. It feels less dramatic and more real to me just the way that playing music feels in real life. If I burst into an I want song, people are going to think I'm insane, but I can play Strangers Like Me and feel the meaning the same way I feel it watching Tarzan or Treasure Planet or Lilo and Stitch. Maybe it's just the way movies were when I was growing up, but Tarzan and Brother Bear are two of my all time favorite movies/soundtracks to this day

I can't really argue with it, either. Having just rewatched this the other day after, shit, twenty years, it's not only just as good as I remembered it but even better; I loved it. This video just reinforced a lot of what makes it so good.
I do have to say that a couple movies give it a run for its money, though. The Brave Little Toaster, Homeward Bound:The Incredible Journey, and the first Toy Story are all absolute bangers.

Never disagreed with either. This is something I want for people to know more (maybe I'll make a video, eh) but this movie has much more effective understanding of cartoon storytelling than Lion King or Pocahontas does. The animation handles some beautiful natural characterizations on alive mannerisms fused to how cartoons work. How for some reason Disney needs to waste millions making this horrible real life movie CGI shows, for people to appreciate more the original films (which is, sad) The animation language is THERE- no "I want to be X because he did this and X" but "HEY. I like Goofy. How do Goofy physics function in a cartoon?" I could make a whole video, but to me, unlike all other Ren movies- this is an original idea. To me, the way Disney functions- that is a full acomplishment.
Fun Fact: I had the comic adaptation of this movie. The moment when Goofy discovers Max's plot, the panel contains a "Noooooooo!" bubble. Imagine if that was included, the impact on Goofy's sad (just, plain, bold sadness) moment would've dissapeared.

The cut off in "a girl worth fighting for" is pivotal! PIVOTAL! In the "wow factor" presentation for the young mind watching Mulan, experiencing the effects of War for the first time.
The fact that their cheery happy song is CUT OFF by death and destruction is what sells the sense of foreboding curiosity for the young mind who is seeing this for the first time.
Even as an adult, the emotional and audio weight that is lifted, to reveal the oblivion of greed and lust for power in the hearts of humans, is still bone chilling to this day tbh.
Yeah his take on that wasn’t hot lol. I think the sudden cut was unexpected and demonstrated that the shock of experiencing actual war given that the group hadn’t actually fought yet. The seriousness of what it happening around them sets in as it does for the audience. It’s sombering and was structured in a way even a kid could resonate with. The whiplash of it made you pay attention and made it even more heartbreaking.

Maybe I misunderstood but I think the part of Mulan that he disagrees with isn't the dramatic cutoff of 'a girl worth fighting for' to show the devastation but instead the choice to not include any new musical numbers after it. He says "I get why they cut all the music, for dramatic effect and to add some seriousness to the show"
I agree that it kind of feels like the movie went dark with the tone and dropped the musical numbers to match but it not like after 'a girl worth fighting for' it turns into saving private ryan, hell the side characters are dressed in drag during the climactic battle.
They even skipped a closing number that could have kept a sober tone for a movie that is still about war but also provided some relief and closure to the end of the story. Just my two cents lol

Notice how when max is always in trouble or in crisis(needing to get to school on time, or needs to improvise the dance number) things always play out so he comes out on top. Despite both situations beginning to progress to be even more insane as the scenes continue.(he does a Ferris Buller through the neighborhood to get to school and his friends tie him to a pulley system that wraps around the gym.)
Some would simply say he is a 90s protagonist and it’s animated kids cartoon but watch it again. This is all thanks to his DAD!!! Look at classic goofy cartoons and watch how in each moment the episodes get more outlandish putting goofy into crazier feats of surviving danger. Max is just sticking the landing smoothly unlike his dad showing how he is different from his father. But the skills to actually survive those improvised stunts comes from having one of animations most amazing stuntmen as his father. Whether the stunts are all just a cartoon or you accept a in universe world doesn’t matter.
That comment made me think of "who framed roger rabbit" and Roger's adoration of goofy as the greatest stunt toon who ever lived and the implications of that tie-in on max's life are pretty amazing! He's the son of one of the most famous toons in history.

It's in my top films of all time and I'm a film nerd. There was so much love put into this project and you can feel it. It made me as a kid and still makes me feel such strong, powerful emotions.

I think another big part of the nostalgia is that when we were younger we saw the movie much more from Maxes point of view. Now that we’re older we tend to see things from the adult characters points of view; thinking about Ariel I can’t help myself, “oh no, you need to stay at home. What are you, 16?! Listen to your father”. Seeing this movie as an adult and seeing Goofys viewpoint of looking out for his child (add in to that, a lot of us have lost family members since childhood) and we can empathize with the “antagonist” and still feel good about ourselves because of the compromise/resolution at the end. I lost my mom in 2020, and when I was younger I was embarrassed by her a lot, she was Goofy to me; rewatching this after she was gone I sobbed so hard because as an adult I found ways to have a relationship with my mom that didn’t leave me feeling embarrassed and I know now more than ever how important family is and I wish life was like this movie we’re one song in childhood could have cleared so much stuff up much earlier on. Sorry I’m rambling, this video somehow really touched me in the feels.

I just realized something.
Normally, I hate musicals. Not the film itself, but normally I dislike that every 12 seconds we need to hear this guy gush about how awful his job is or about the girl he likes. But I loved the goofy movie. Honestly, I never actually noticed that it was a musical. Goofy movie is probably THE best Disney mascot-based film.

I like or am ambivalent toward musicals and I forgot this was a musical. I think it's just a testament to how integrated and plot-relevant the songs are. In other musicals, the guy sings a "this girl hot" song because that's just what's expected. It doesn't have any impact on the story or teach us anything interesting about the characters.
I similarly hate musicals but Goofy Movie, Mulan, and Chicago are ones I can watch without issue.
I like musicals as long as there's plenty of normal dialogue.
I really don't like musical like Hamilton or Les Mis. Technically the movie Cats as well, but I don't think even a regular script could save that glorious dumpster fire (though one of the most enjoyable

I always thought this movie was underrated. It shows a surprising amount of polish and creative care for not being a flagship movie of the studio.
Another thing of what makes this movie so great is why we all love Home Alone 1&2 so much. It paints a world so vividly from the point of view of a kid. With everyone singing about how everything is going to be better and theyll be free soon as summer break hits, the pure dread in the office, and being helpless strung along by the whims of your parents, even though you want no part of it so youre stuck grumbling "this is stupid" until you get back home and tell them you never want to see them again. It makes you feel like you're a kid again at Max's age.
I'm a professional singer who married a pianist. My mom is completely unversed in music. She knows nothing about the structures, rhythms, etc. She loves listening to her favorite bands but has no deeper appreciation for WHY those songs move her. Your channel has been more helpful for me than anything else I've come across to educate her and explain to her the concepts of what makes music so moving and important. Thank you for that. Every time i hear about katzenburg he is simultaneously the worst and the best thing to happen to western animation and i don't know how to feel about that.
Conclusions about Katzenburg: He came to Disney without any clue how animation was supposed to work, learned from his failures (and others' successes), and remained a petty businessman who learned the value of good advice.
I guess he's a jerk, but not arrogant about it. He'll accept he was wrong and back someone who has shown they know what they're doing, but he has to be convinced. If he's not convinced he'll remain petty about it.
I've only really heard the bad things, like treasure planet (breadsword), or Aladin (lindsay ellis). it's rare to hear that he actually did something nice for someone.
Honestly, I think the only reason he was nice to Ashman was because K knew about all the money he could get out of Ashman’s talent. And weren’t Treasure Planet, Megamind, and Shrek all expected to be D-list flicks and just ignored by the higher ups, including K, at the time? He wasn’t letting them blossom, he was ignoring them.
Heck, Shrek was being made in the basement under the production for The Prince of Egypt, which was expected to be the real money maker. And Treasure Planet was deliberately planned and set up to fail by the execs.
That hes a human like all of us.

In Portugal they fully translated this movie, songs inclueded and did a pretty really job. They even understood the importance of Max trying to distance himself from his fathers image, by making sure they used "Pateta" (Goofy's portuguese name and a possible translation of the word goofy) in the 2 times Max uses goof in "After Today". I loved this movie as a kid, and was pleasantly surprised that this movie is getting attention all these years later.

I feel like the real “Time Bomb" of this film is that we all grew up viewing this film as Max. Now we see it through the lens of Goofy and it's a completely different film.
I dunno. As a kid I 100% sided with Goofy and thought Max was being an asshole. Then as a teenager, I thought, yeah, I can kinda see where Max is coming from. And now as an adult, I can appreciate Max's desire for independence, but definitely still side with Goofy and admire him even more for what he has done for his son. It's awesome how this movie changes as a person ages.

On your last point - what's really significant of the nostalgic power here is that this was the ONLY 90s in-theatres Disney animated film to be set in the present day, 1995. And although it's not technically part of the Renaissance as it wasn't made by the flagship Disney animation studio, at the time it was only one of two animated Disney films to do that EVER going all the way back to Snow White. The other one was Oliver and Company, which was kind of the last straw of the pre-Ren dark age of Disney animation, and still an adaptation of a classic well-known work.
So Goofy Movie was the only original story set in the present day they'd ever made, and I don't think that would happen again till like...maybe Wreck it Ralph? It was also set in its country of origin, the USA. So with every other Renaissance movie surrounding it essentially a period piece set in a far off land like Ancient Greece or African Savannahs, this was incredibly unique, even for viewers who had watched plentiful amounts of Disney's animated catalog. And with that familiar setting it became 100x more relatable to audiences, bolstering it's nostalgia factor, which would only grow at an especially high rate over the next 15 years or so since nothing else Disney animation put out even tried to go down that path again.
And that's what really made A Goofy Movie.....stand out.

"Lilo and Stitch," "Bolt," and parts of "Meet the Robinsons" were set in the modern day, and "Chicken Little" arguably was as well. All of those came out between "A Goofy Movie" and "Wreck-It Ralph." It is still fairly rare.

There is a little goof. They change on Max's night stand is the wrong color and size to be American currency. I think it matches French currency.

This movie, like "Treasure Planet", was totally ignored because the focus was on male bonding. In both situations, more specifically, we have a young man learning from a father or father figure. Both were masterpieces.
Agreed, both movies are extremely underrated compared to other movies more popular, not that the popular disney movies are bad, but I'd really have liked these two movies in particular to have the success they deserved
If you look up the movie on youtube, I remember a video explaining how the heada of Disney were trying to make thst movie fail. And it still did rather well.

i swear, i hear nothing but good things about this movie, and people always say how underappreciated it is. and i totally agree. and this was a great review. more people REALLY need to see it. and in spite of all that, when i think of 'favorite disney movies', i always freakin forget about this one. they just handled it so freakin well, it's baffling to imagine how it came to exist. i'm scared this movie will fade into obscurity, along with the brave little toaster. they are so much more important and yet somehow so damn easy to forget....
They actually end up together we'll not in the movie. In the DuckTales series goofys long ass wallet had a picture of max and the girl together. It's really wholesome.

@Why Me Extremely Goofy Movie, Max and his friends graduate, go to college, but Roxanne's not there with them. Considering the DuckTales series is a reboot, not a sequel, that may or may not be part of the new canon. Either way, Max becomes an extreme sports star while Goofy and PJ get the girls instead.
The sequel is just as cannon as DVD Disney sequels, with a different team making it. So I don't count it.

I'm 17 and used to watch this on VHS in my grandma's basement as a kid. While I didn't grow up with a lot of the nostalgic things featured in the film it still makes me feel that way. This was more from around the time my uncles were in high school. Nevertheless, it gives me warm feelings and memories of being a kid. I absolutely can relate to the film and appreciate it more now that I'm not of dino nuggie age. I know you probably won't see this comment because this is a year-old video but I can't thank you enough for making this. I'm definitely gonna see if my grandma has this and get it and the VHS player from her if she does. Thanks for making my day.
I also liked that at the end of the movie we get a demonstration of Max and Goofy's new understanding of compromise. Goofy lets his son be more independent, and Max introduces Roxanne to Goofy, letting his father be directly involved in his life. Ending the movie on that scene is another stroke of brilliance, because it ties a neat little bow on the entire premise of the movie and shows just how far the two have come. Also, Max and Roxanne are adorable and it sucks they left her out of the sequel.
The second movie hurts. I like the aspect of Goofy going back to school to make a better life for himself now that Max is in college and likely moving out after he graduates. But they completely destroyed the character development Max has in the first movie by going back and being a complete ass to Goofy again. When Max says "Leave me alone and get your own life" to Goofy it throws out the entirety of Nobody Else But You and turns it into Nothing Else Matters. Am Extremely Goody movie has 2 villian. Bradley obviously and Max Goof and I hate that Disney did Max and Goofy dirty like that. I showed my gf those movies when we first got together because she showed me her favorite Disney films and I hadn't seen them in years. I remember why I loved the first one and the new perspective I have watching it as an adult. And although I loved the second as a kid my gf and I talked about it after I said, "That was not good. This aged terribly." And a lot of it had to do with watching it as an adult with a new perspective.
I saw this as a senior in high school with my then best friend. We loved the Goof Troop TV show so we went to this as 2 seventeen year olds in a theater full of 6 year olds and their uninterested parents. And the two of us were laughing out loud and having the best time of anybody in the theater. We loved this movie, and Adam and I going to see this is one of those memories that I'll carry with me till my dying day.

Another factor: Remember how you said that "Depending on how you look at it, Goofy is the villain"? What makes "On the Open Road" even better is as you get older, you can easily look at it in the other direction, with MAX equally being the villain for impeding Goofy's attempts to bond with his son. It's not just a villain song for Goofy, it's also a villain song for Max too. It can easily go either way and that just makes it even better than before. It could be Max's attempts to get to impress Roxanne or maybe Goofy is the protagonist and the film is about Goofy coming to terms with Max growing up and wanting to remain a part of his son's life.
Nice. This movie does well with getting you to empathize with both the protagonist - Max and Antagonist - Goofy. Your conception of the On The Open Road song is accurate because this movie is an honest look at struggling parent-child relationships, albeit through a fun and whimsical lens. Both sides hold equal measure as protagonist and main character of their own story arcs within a single movie.
This has been my fav movie since it came out on vhs. Now that Have a 15 and 18 year old, I can completely see where you are coming from.
It's the parent's responsibility to set the rules in a relationship. Max is not "Equally" a villain in this, he's rebelling against imposition and up to this point is acting reasonable in such circumstances with his father.
I saw this movie in the theater with my dad twice when I was about 7 years old. Needless to say, it was the perfect father-son film, and it became my favorite Disney movie of all time. So that's one thing you and I are in agreement on entirely. But there's one thing you mentioned about how Goofy is the antagonist of the movie, which I think can be expanded upon a little more.
What I love about A Goofy Movie is that, depending on your age, the "villain" kind of changes. As a kid, I absolutely identified with Max. I wanted to be popular at school. I wanted to end up with the cute, shy girl. But most importantly, I *didn't* want to see him have to miss out on all of that to go on a vacation with Goofy. The world of high school kids having fun at a party during summer vacation was just too enticing, and I vividly remember the feeling of frustration I felt as a kid when the trip was proposed. As much as I loved Goofy, he absolutely felt like the antagonist.
Cut to a few months ago, when my girlfriend and I watched it again in a marathon of watching and ranking our favorite animated Disney films. Even though we don't have kids ourselves... I found myself more on Goofy's side than Max. I've seen the hardships of being an adult firsthand. Of single parents trying to be there for their kids and be a part of their lives. Watching A Goofy Movie as an adult made me appreciate how hard Goofy tried for his son, and how unappreciative (for lack of a better term) Max is until they're compromise at the end. Max was the villain now, not only making it more difficult for his father to communicate with him, but fighting him every step of the way for his own selfish reasons.
In the end, it's clear neither of them are the bad guy. They're just a father and son that have trouble understanding one another until they're able to speak openly and honestly from the heart. But I think it's why it's such a smart and powerful film in ways it doesn't get enough credit for. It speaks to you on different levels depending on where you are in life. It's why I'll always be thankful to my dad for the time we got to spend watching this together in that theater. I think I owe it to him to sit down and watch it together again someday.

Im on Max side though he shouldnt be held with the same accountability he is still a kid and besides its not his job to communicate, its Goofy's hes the adult in fact he is the one who made everyyhing difficult. Doesnt help he still treats Max like hes 5 years old. He was the one acting on his own selfish reasons, not listening to his son when he tries to explain things, forcing to go on a vacation whether he wanted or not and not even getting to know Max own interests but instead pushing into stuff he dislikes to the point of humiliating him which Goofy was also oblivious to notice. Thats the big issue with how naive and immature he really is. Cant fault Max for not opening up anymore and its down to Goofy communicating until the end.
