The GX can easily drive past 500k miles with proper basic maintenance. It never looks aged. Besides good looking, luxury and durability, the GX is a real SUV that leave others stranded when the roads become off road.
As someone who puts a canoe on top of my suv, the barn style tailgate is actually better than the typical lift gate. With a boat on top you can still access gear in the rear of the vehicle. Not for everyone but it does have its place!
But be sure to save a few bucks to replace the timing belt that is likely needed by now. Most of the ones I researched had well over 100k miles. We went with a 16' GX460 with 30k miles. I trust timing chains more than belts as long as the chain guides and tensioners aren't made of chinessium like my triton 5.4.
wait this is a 2020 model? Nice walk through, but aside from the "please notice me" front grill, this looks at least 10 years old. Buy an older one and save a bunch money. At least the 2005 graphics would feel more reasonable in that.
I love the grill. I would love them to add a proper off-road package with better tires, trims, more ground clearance, more approach/departure angles (stylish metal bympers), skid plates, etc.
Car reviewers need to give a definition of what Off road means in relation to the SUV/ truck being reviewed. Watching this I really feel like crying. This is literally my dream car!😍😍😍 Those red seats are killing me, I want this bad! It would be 🔥🔥🔥🔥 if it was black with red interior! I'm in the market for a used GX460 which is how I came across this video. I'm excited to finally buy my dream car but this 2020 is beyond a dream! Maybe one day!❤
Scratch the third-row seat, add the hatch of the 4runner and taillights and update the infotainment with Apple car play and Android and I am in. Love the grill, love the V8 4.6 engine. I agree this is a dream vehicle and wait a few years and it becomes affordable.
That gate sucks real world. When in a busy grocery store parking lot(where this vehicle will spend most of its time) and the car behind you is 10" from your bumper you cant load your golden grahams, sunny D, ketchup and pepper.
You don't park next to the riff raff when you own one of these. Walking a few more steps to and from are worth it plus it helps to stay in shape. I enjoy the gate because it gets nearly entirely out of the way when loading, plus the door can still stay open, even when the strut goes out. Can't say that about vertical swing up rear hatches.
The amazing off-road tech on a vehicle that otherwise isn't designed to go far off-road is mind blowing. At least put 4 wheel air suspension and an option for real off-road tires would be a great start. Thanks for the great video.
We saw the 2020 Gx offroad I was quite impressed, the guy that was driving told me he owns a land cruiser prado and this is the American version of it.
I love my RX because the back hatch opens automatically with the fob- this pull-out function is antiquated, and takes up tons of room. The front infotainment system/screen is grossly outdated and should have been replaced with the update. This is still one of the best cars on the road- the V-8 is maintenance free, and owners can easily get 300k out of it if maintained properly. Nice job on the video.
That gate should go up because it interferes with any tow hitch, towing device, bike racks trailers etc..you attach..it definitely should lift upward..also, the tailgate upwards serves as a small roof if it starts raining while your on the road or camping etc.. 👍👍
I owned one of these for about a year. That rear swing out door became such a pain in the ass I got rid of it. Seriously. Loading and unloading at the curb of an airport just sucks. You can’t use it in a normal garage, or even a large garage, it takes up so much space. But that engine. Man, that engine. And the vehicle is the perfect size. If it had a two piece rear with tailgate I’d still have that rig.
The best lift gate door I’ve seen is on the Dodge Magnum because it hinges high and inward towards the front of the vehicle so the door doesn’t require much space swinging outward when going up. Think of how a sedan’s trunk opens. Not sure why more haven’t copied this design.
@@dlessard2369 not sure about where you live, but on the west coast there really isnt anything that tall in a parking lot. Most curbs and stops are 6-7" so most likely fine.
@@ALMX5DP I've seen the lower stops that you have they won't work in snow country because plows can't see these as well. Even at 6" high is close for that bumper to rub or hit. I'am just saying that it will cost major $'s in repairs because it is so big of a front bumper. Ins co cost will be high to insure. But who cares when spending 98k on this SUV.
The only advantage I can possibly see for swing out gate is opening it just a crack to get access if you park in a garage with the door shut. Generally manufacturers use this door for for doors that hold a spare tire, but this doesn’t have one on the door. The 4Runner uses a regular lift up door, but this used a swing out door. I’m still not even sure what are the advantages or why somebody would want this.
I like how looks the seats, the reliability and longevity of the Lexus, but lack a lot of technology for that level of price, probably most of the Lexus are made for a market that doesn't require a lot of tech like other brands with similar prices
The rear gate is a love or hate left over from the prado, but surprisingly there’s 2 different prado models one that’s like the gx and another one that has the spare on the back like a Jeep, it makes it look like a 2nd gen RAV4 in my opinion. is all because when the prado was released all models had it. The prado was based mostly for the JDM market so all jdm suvs have the spare on the back even the Hilux surf had it aka 4runner, so there for all prado models have always had the swing out gate, it was something that got carried over from the original model, the GX is a true jdm suv that has no businesses being in America what so ever that’s why Toyota made the 4runner for, but yet again Toyota just grabbed it and slapped a Lexus badge on it when the car was design for a completely different market.
It's surprising that Toyota did not spend the money to provide a left-hinged rear door model for the LHD market. Obviously they do have RHD and LHD models as far as the driver controls, seating position, and instrument panel since I assume they sell this vehicle at home (Japan-RHD) and in various markets around the world.
Don't really care about the grille. This thing isn't meant to tackle rock crawling trails. Also, as a tall dude, I much prefer side swing tailgates as I don't hit my head on them like I do on top-swinging hatch doors.
The headlights are nice, but the grille actually ruins the approach angle and front ground clearance. The rear bumper and side sills are also too low. Here in Europe and the rest of the world there is this car’s mechanical brother, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. Which has a smaller engine, less power, and FAR more approach and departure angles, as well as better side clearance. You win some and you lose some.
They really need to update that interior. Also there’s no reason that engine shouldn’t get 18 to 20 mpg. My full size crew cab truck gets better mileage.
The Japanese should fire their designers, that grill is so UGLY and is way to big for the size of this vehicle! The back door opens the wrong way (we drive on the right side of the road in North America). I bet that their sales will plummet this year. I certainly would not buy this vehicle (reliable or not)! That is one man’s opinion. Good video on an ugly vehicle!
After all these years, Lexus IS still putting out the GX with those dumb side opening doors. Do they know something the consumers don’t about what configuration is most user friendly?
Was never a fan of the grill design from day 1, and still not. The 3rd row is noisy and small! For the money, your buying lots of low end plastic. AND GOOD LUCK AFFORDING FIXES AFTER THE WARRANTY RUNS OUT! NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL!

Toyota does not suffer from trying to keep up. They understand when and for how long to leave well enough alone. The GX line is not broken, hense no need to fix it. The general public is mostly obsessed with (new) when they should be thinking of tried and true.
Never in the history of modern cars has such a popular series been so long without a REAL update. The 4runner and gx should be dominating the suv market if not for Toyota's laziness.
