Is The Batman Better Than The Dark Knight?

- Let’s travel back to 2008 when the summer hit its fever pitch of the long-awaited Christopher Nolan superhero epic, The Dark Knight. I could remember it like it was yesterday, when I was a sophomore in college reading up on all the production coverage I could find (here’s looking at you JoBlo). Rewatching those amazing trailers, following that online campaign and viral marketing which was way ahead of its time. My presale tickets were bought; I was amped beyond words for what I was about to witness. I think it was the longest wait on a theater line as well, clocking in three hours prior to seating on opening night at my local IMAX. Because at that time, seats weren’t reserved, and it was a battle royale trying to get that coveted middle row seat. Picture “Running of the Bulls” in Spain, but with people trying to get that damn middle row. Boy, how far we’ve come with the movie theater experience. When the dust settled, The Dark Knight transcended the superhero genre and was talked about for months on end due to its story, its scope, its direction, its spectacle, and its acting. However, the biggest takeaway was the late Heath Ledger’s interpretation of the Joker, which is still one of the best live-action movie villain performances of all-time. It’s the main reason why the Oscars went from 5 Best Picture candidates to 10. It’s also the reason why many actors try to emulate and top Heath’s performance for that coveted gold Oscar; and why many have failed to achieve it. And like all good things, they must come to an end, only to wait years upon years for next great Batman tale to unfold on the big screen.
I have to say, after watching Matt Reeve’s The Batman in 2022, after a handful of delays, no thanks to COVID, and hearing the production hell it endured; I prided myself in knowing that the Batman deserved to stand alongside the all-time greatest superhero film put onto celluloid since 2008. But why has some of the feedback since its release from many people around the globe garner Matt Reeve’s The Batman not as worthy? I’m here to prove why it’s just as strong as TDK, and why they go hand in hand. Ah yes, you may think my words and opinions are delusional, but they’re simply subjective and filled with passion of my favorite superhero. I have a feeling were on the precipice of another legendary Batman trilogy that down the line may just overshadow Nolan’s. Matt Reeves’ The Batman is the flipside to Nolan’s The Dark Knight’s coin, no pun intended. While one is smaller and intimate in scope as a detective thriller, the other is much more bombastic and versatile reveling in its blockbuster spectacle. But in honesty, they’re merely equals, and share everything great on what a Batman film should be, harkening back to all the best source material of The Dark Knight mythos. So, let’s dive in.

When I was a kid, I used to dream we would get comic book movies like this. Now we have them, and all people do is make snide remarks about how much they dislike them. I realize now we never deserved them to start with.
Props to this guy for showing adoration for both versions, regardless of which you like better.
Shut up
We don't deserve them?
Put it this way: I’ve seen The Batman only twice (in theaters, IMAX) and once at home, while The Dark Knight has endless rewatchability. Nothing will ever top that experience of seeing it in IMAX on opening night with my friends back in 2008. I think I saw it 6 times that summer, lol.
The only reason you seen The Batman only twice is the length i bet
@@Vanessinha91Pucca I had no problem with the length of The Batman. TDK was about 2hrs 45 minutes, almost 3 hours. I think the pacing is better with TDK. With that second watch for The Batman you feel every minute, and that’s not always necessarily a good thing
@@VandalSauvage I had problem with the length, that's what keep me not seeing The Batman as much
@@Vanessinha91Pucca Fr. I mean the story was really good, it kept me engaged. But I really hated the ending of The Batman with the flooding… Just seemed tacked on and over the top

The Batman is good but The Dark Knight is a MASTERPIECE.
The Dark Knight = Legendary
The Batman =Outstanding

@@jasonaugustine3370 CORRECT!!!
I agree.
Sorry but the batman is not outstanding at all.. Imdb has it right a 7,9 not more.
Why so serious?
Um...you know the scene where he flies down and slams violently into the ground, gets up and walks it off? Pretty invincible too, it seems.
He also relied much too much on Lucius in the dark Knight trilogy
He is smarter than Lucius
All Lucius is supposed to do is run the company
No.
Batman 1989 is my favorite Batman movie. Jack Nicholson was so great as the Joker and he is my favorite one (Heath and Mark are better in their own ways), Michael Keaton was just great as Batman, I like the 1930’s noir style to it, Gotham looks so real and grotesque, the batmobile and the batwing look very cool, and Danny Elfman’s score is untouchable along with Prince’s album. I do think Batman Returns, The Dark Knight trilogy, and The Batman are better made movies, but I am more comfortable to rewatch Batman 1989 over any other Batman movie (not including animation).
Most awesome scene (for me) is seeing the Dark Knight batmobile facing the garbage truck head on , hitting it full speed and shoving it backward without even a lurch. But one thing great about the Batman is it finally made the Riddler freakin SCARY.
The riddler looks like a basement nerd tbh and I usually like Paul Dano but this wasn't it
@@HILAL19564 shut up crackhead
I feel they are two totally separate renditions of the Batman character. The Batman felt to me like a live action version of the Arkham Knight computer game series, but with a terrible Bruce Wayne. This version of Wayne was like a moody emo kid. Dark Knight however was the best cinematic version of Batman we have had which balanced perfectly the Joker and the Batman.
As I said, both movies have their pluses, but whereas I personally found nothing in Dark Knight to dislike, the crap Bruce Wayne from The Batman soured that movie for me.
Batman is emo in the comics aswell lol this aint for u den💀👊
I feel like The Batman did a great job at showing Bruce Wayne as the mask and Batman as who he really is. I think if this version of Bruce Wayne stays the same and doesn't learn how to use his "mask" well to avoid suspicion, you could make the case this is a terrible Bruce Wayne. However, keep in mind, this is early Batman; his second year. I don't think it would make sense for him to be masking so well as Bruce. I mean look at Tim Burton's Bruce Wayne: very secluded to the point no one even seems to know what he looks like. However, I will say, Nolan's Bruce is better.
Also, nothing: really? Not even Christian Bales terrible "scary" Batman voice? Like, come on, The Dark Night is great, but to say there's nothing to dislike is a little cope
ARE YOU SERIOUS?
I think we've found our new Joker in this video.
I forgot I watched The Batman, says alot
To quote dr. Evil.... "How about... No.."! 😂
"Try the Hot Pockets, they're breathtaking." LOL Austin Powers rules and so do you.
Mark and Heathl, perfect. Pattinson sold me, and the same goes for Ben. I just wish DC could get their collective sh*t together.
The Dark Knight was an experience in the summer of 2008. People who weren't even comic fans were talking about it. This was before the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I was in theater with people who had watched it multiple times that day. The Batman came and went with little fanfare or cultural impact.
Ledger's death added a lot to that hype and the Batman came out during the middle of COVID and was of the first bigger movies to do theatres at the time. This most definitely affected things. Considering the pandemic and it coming to streaming the same month of its theatrical release the 700 million dollar box office is pretty good.

There are so many comic book movies that are yet to be done, yet JoBlo insist in making videos on the same movies over and over again.
I think it is a problem with many channels in social media. There are only same films to talk about.
The Dark Knight is the only movie I had ever been at that got a standing ovation when it ended.
For me It's The Batman 👍👊👊
I prefer Batman Begins to The Dark Knight - and I will die on that hill.

I like the Batman movie but I enjoy the Nolan films more.
I love both movies. The only thing i don't really care for in The Batman was the Riddler. Didn't like the choice of covering his face or the glasses. I understand covering his face because Batman needed to figure out who he was. For me it made it difficult to connect because I couldn't see his face. I loved Penguin. I felt he was better. That's my take. I've watched both numerous times because I love the direction and cinematography. Acting as well
I hear ya, I think if i remember I read that they wanted the Riddler to have the Zodiac killer look
I will never understand the bullet fragments and fingerprint thing. Wtf was that about? Makes zero sense to check those specific variables looking for that specific result. Whomever wrote that scene was lacking knowledge of forensics in any manner.
He pieced together the fragments to make out a finger print..

No. It does have better fight scenes and a comparable chase, but overall it isn't as good. I love them both and I do think The Batman captures the vibe better than The Dark Knight, but you just can't beat Nolan when it comes to Batman.
Not to me. And that's putting aside the fact that TDK is my favorite movie. "The Batman" is in my top 3 Batman films though, behind "Batman Begins", and you guessed it. It grows on me more and more.
I think I'd prefer 2022s The Batmans atmosphere feel when it comes to Gotham but for me 2008s The Dark Knight to me is the better movie , with The Batman as a close 2nd
The Dark Knight is still the best Batman movie but The Batman is a close second! 🥈
Hot take: Batman V Superman clears both of them particularly the extended cut
I have my opinion but honestly these are 2 totally different movies. Different aesthetics, style, attitude and changes to storytelling. They didn't want to showcase the same things, didn't want to invoke the same emotion etc.
The mere fact that it took 4 tries to stream this without getting bored and didn't remember it afterwards tells me it's not gonna work on me. I respect your passion though
Absolutely not lol you can’t even see what’s going on in the Batman half the time. The dark knight is a masterpiece in comparison

That is the most stupidest question ever asked!!!! The dark knight is a million times better
I remember had good memory watching the dark knight in the movie theaters. I watched Batman Matt reeves in 4K Dolby in AMC good movie experience.
Clickbait video.
The Batman is great. I personally felt its very much a middle ground or amalgamation of Burton and Nolan films. Burton's dark and gothic visual style. Nolan's gritty realism in execution of story, production and dramaticism.
I certainly see a lot of potential in Matt Reeves' Batman series and I think it will ultimately be judged by how good the next Batman film will be. Whether it overtakes The Dark Knight, thats hard to tell now until it happens. But something tells me I don't think so.
The Dark Knight set the bar so high. It is considered by many as a cinematic film rather than just a great superhero comicbook movie and that is an important distinction. It is Number 3 in the top 10 Movies of All Time in IMDB and TDK often tops the list in many comic book movie Rankings.
Even the Broccoli's looked at Batman Begins and TDK and adapted that gritty approach to their James Bond reboot with Daniel Craig. Its very apparent in SkyFall.
Like the Joker said to Batman during the interrogation scene "You've changed things...... Forever". Thats certainly what TDK did.
When I sat to watch this in the theaters I had just broken up with a girl..I was in the dumps..then Travis Pastrana sat next to me. Dude was wild and I got to bs around with him for a few hours and totally got over the breakup.
Hell no man. The Nolan movies are pure cinema. The latest surely isn't the greatest.
They're different enough in my eyes, they're not really comparable, I love both of em. My only real beef with The Batman was the invincible bulletproof and wing suit scenes, and the Joker at the end. I'm REALLY hoping Reeves doesn't do the Joker in his films... No one will ever hold a candle to Ledger's portrayal, imo
please editor, don't use that AI filter in the narration, it makes it sound so bad and nasal!
Is that AI speaking? I thought it was just someone that needed to blow their nose.
@@edbelben6273 I'm pretty sure an iA filter from Premiere pro was used
I agree that both these films are masterpieces of cinema. I won't bother waste time about one being better than the other, because like the narrator, Batman is my favorite superhero, and to be honest I'm all for more movies featuring the World's Greatest Detective
No, emphatically no.. however the Christopher Nolan trilogy did set a bar... Even for himself. Please don't put give that movie a false sense of hope. It's NOT better.
TDKR is ass.
I dont really have a stance here but I just want to say RIP Kevin Conroy

For me, comparing The Dark Knight and The Batman to determine which is the better movie is akin to comparing Zelda games to determine which is the best. Depending on the time of day, day of the week, which way the wind is blowing etc, either if these masterpieces can come out on top, just like any Zelda game can be the greatest depending on how I feel on any given day. I love that The Dark Knight could equally work as a brilliant crime-action movie if you swapped out every Batman/DC related, and I love that The Batman is, for me, more a Batman graphic novel come to life. The long and short, I absolutely love both these Batman movies.
DK ends up its own ass. TB keeps it grounded.
Personally, I like "The Batman" even better than the Dark Knight. And it is exactly because it is a 3-hour noir detective story. As far as I'm concerned, this is the best interpretation of Batman. Second comes Tim Burton's and only on third place Nolan's. That beeing said, I love all three interpretations for different reasons and consider the two Burton movies, both dark knight movies (not the first one though) and "The Batman" to be cinematic masterpieces. With both "The Batman" and "The Dark Knight" making it onto my list of the best movies of all time.
The dark knight is as close to perfection as a film can be.
The Batman was filmed so dark, I mean lighting, not mood. It’s hard to actually see the film.
The dark knight has too many day time scenes it'd boring as hell The Batman is better
For people who say the Batman drags, a bit fair. But I saw it twice in theaters, multiple times at home, and it never felt like a three hour movie to me. Its that engaging. Plus, the batman gets bonus points because of the multiple motorcycles in the film...but that's just me.
I can't pick honestly. But the batman has the best bat mobile
No, there about on par.
Dark knight had a good story and narrative thread throughout, and is better paced. However, Gotham didn't feel like Gotham, and Batman did not quite feel like batman from the comics, they tried to do some detective things but it was a bit crap on that front. I mean he used a computer to magic up a finger print from an exploded bullet🤨.
The Batman, the plot starts off great but the third act does not quite feel like it fits. The pacing is also bad, with real slow points. However, Gotham looks amazing and feels like an entity like it's meant to. Also it was great to see the detective elements properly explored. With you know actual investigation.
If you were to combine the two films, it may have been the best movie ever. But we're not quite there yet.
Maybe in the sequel.
No BatMan Movie Will Ever Be Better Than The Dark Knight For One Simple Reason... It's Posthumously Preserved As The Number One BatMan Movie, Because Of Heath's Passing. & Yes The Dark Knight Is Perfect, But In My Opinion The BatMan Is Also Awesome, & I Can't Wait For PatBat Part 2.
It’s definitely the closest Batman movie to the source material. I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this movie.
No it isnt.. dumb ass casuals
Lol. Just for starters, what, exactly, was "closer" about Bruce Wayne's portrayal and more accurate? What was accurate about the Riddler?
@@f1jones544 Ikr.. pretty sure comic accurate Batman knows what a damn carpet removing tool is 😅
This Batman is still learning. By the third movie he'll be the World's Greatest Detective and will nail the flight suit landing like a boss. This will be the first time we get an arc for Batman.
@@howkel Dude stop that dumbass excuse, its overused and doesnt work.
This Batman is TWO WHOLE YEARS into being Batman and the dumb mf didnt even know what a carpeting tool was and was scared to glide 50ft off the ground, not to mention Alfred and Penguin solved the damn riddles for BATMAN 🤣
Sit down and find a better excuse for this trash
Also, Nolan literally did a 3 picture arc with Batman.. now you have to lie to put this on a pedestal.
This is why The Batman will never be looked as highly as TDK, we didnt have to lie about that trilogy as you all have to about this one.
Fell asleep during The Batman, so no.

The Dark Knight is my favorite Batman movie of all time. The Batman is the best Batman movie closest to the comics.
I mean, they're both great films. Both completely different in tone, setting, and the the story they're trying to tell. I personally like The Dark Knight better because I feel it is more consistent with it's ability to push thr film forward in an enjoyable way. I am not an "action, smash and grab" guy by any means, but The Batman felt slow, too moody, and it personally didn't stick the landing for me in the third act. I have my problems with the way Batman is portrayed in Nolan's trilogy, but I'll take his version over the sad, broody, emo Batman we got in The Batman. And, I personally think Robert Pattinson is a good actor.
Like I stated before, both are extremely different films in tone and atmosphere. But, I would choose The Dark Knight any day, if only to see Heath Ledger's amazing performer as The Clown Prince of Crime.
Awesome
Hell No. The Dark Knight is Optimum Batman Movie. But... Michael Keaton is the ultimate Batman
Nope.
The real comparison would be comparing The Batman II to The Dark Knight. Batman Begins should be the comparable to The Batman and I prefer The Batman ALOT more than that.

The Batman is better. I love the DK but it has not aged well. The Batman felt more like Batman. Having seen them both in theatre when they came out The Batman left me shook. Much more than DK. Ledger was the main talking point around the DK and his death added a lot of pop culture hype to it. The DK is a great movie but as far as Batman cred goes The Batman has it beat. I liked Pattison's portrayal better too. The Bale voice is more comical at this point than anything else.

The Batman could have been in the argument but for whatever reason they only used the Riddler for minutes. He was AMAZING. But to lil screen time to be considered even an equal to the Dark Knight.
JUST MY OPINION!!
What's interesting is that they are both recreating the look and tone of other movies and their directors work (Mann/Heat and Fincher/Seven). It wasn't much of a slavish recreation in the case of Dark Knight. To me, Matt Reeves has no sense of authorship. He was just doing Fincher cosplay.
