Yeah because Alakazam isn't busted enough already in gen 1 pika cup, with Persian, Snorlax and Tauros banned, the few things that actually gave Alakazam pause, on top of psychic reducing special (both special attack and special defense) 30% of the time rather then 10% on special defense it does now. Did I also mention that it has no weaknesses because Ghost is bugged to be immune and only has lick and its only user is poison type anyway and no one learns a bug move until after level 20, and Beedrill aside from being awful is also poison typed and Jolteon doesn't learn pin missile until after level 20 and has a horrid attack stat to use it with in any case. No wonder I had so few problems beating Pika cup with Starmie and Alakazam back in the day. Would never use either of those busted things now.

6:11 Actually, yes it was a programming issue! Because of the formula used to calculate Experience Points, Pokémon in the Medium Slow experience group (that is, the majority of Pokémon) would be said to have -54 experience points at Level 1, not 0. The game treated this as over 16 million Experience Points as the experience value was unsigned, so this could be used to jump to level 100. This is also why Gen 2 Eggs are Level 5. The problem was fixed in Gen 3, which used a lookup table that simply set the base Experience Points at Level 1 to 0 rather than -54 like the formula would say.
@@shardtheduraludon yes, but while eggs still hatched at Lv5 in Gen 3, the glitch was fixed nonetheless, so while Lv1 Pokémon are unobtainable (to my knowledge) they worked perfectly fine
About the cross-gen trading dragonair thing... You can actually fish up lvl 10 Dragonair with a super rod on that tiny lake on route 45-46. I used to do this for kicks. That means you can have both Dragonair and Dodrio at level 10.
Well this is something I wasn’t expecting, but it sounds pretty interesting. Kinda weird how the Pika Cup never had an equivalent in later Pokémon games. Two notes: I really like how you found ways to chain trades to obtain certain Pokémon, and a team entirely comprised of Level 16 Pokémon would be perfectly fine for the Pika Cup.
Even though Tradeback moves are highlighted purple in Pokemon Stadium (which means the game thinks they are illegal), I believe that, for the Pika Cup, allowing all 149 Pokemon was intentional. This game was being made alongside Gen 2 (this is why the Gym Leader Castle gift Pokemon have their catch rates modified so they come with a Normal Box or Gorgeous Box in Gen 2), which introduced a lot of low level mid or high evolution Pokemon (Arbok, Fearow, Gloom, etc.). This is why they decided to just use the "No Mew allowed" rule, since they had no clue what the limit would be with tradebacks.
I got interested in this stuff years ago, too! The official Pokémon Stadium guide from back in the day had all the info from this video except for the stuff with Japanese Blue, of course. I already did all the research about what you can get from Gen 2, and it's a LOT. Most of the ineligible evolved forms can be found from levels 15-20 at least somewhere in the Gen 2 games. And some years back I did all the research and added all the info to Bulbapedia's Pika Cup page, which remains there to this day.
13:50 - In G1 and G2, Japanese games trying to trade with international games would result in save corruption. G3 can do it safely, but good luck finding people without GTS!
@@NeoGraena Nope, gen 3 can do it too, there are some oddities with displaying non-Japanese names in the Japanese versions (it will only display the first 5 letters and they will be in all-caps fullwidth) but it does work assuming you can get the different language carts together.
Git voiceover :D Also, wow, Japanese Blue actually considered how some people wouldn't be able to acquire Pokemon like Golem or Gengar and put ways to obtain them in the game. Meanwhile, in English Red/Blue, we get a trade that's... a Male Nidoran for a Female Nidoran.
Japanese Blue was a special edition after all, so it makes sense to have higher benefits. Sad we only got the graphical upgrade for that game and everything else is picked from japanese Red and Green.
Oh crap! He that is definitely the case. there's a few bugs that let you get level 1 pokemon in gen 1, and if they gain less exp than they would need to level up they will instantly shoot up to level 100
@@OhCrapI_He If I'm not mistaken, the reason they go to level 100 is that if you don't get enough experience to get to level two, the pokemon has negative experience points and the game has to use a really high value instead.
@@Silver_Sonic_23 Or even the level 100 Mew Glitch, luckily it can learn any and every TM in the game and Nidoking has a good variety of TM moves it can learn
I'd love to see a follow up for the Gen 2 tradebacks. Definitely don't bother with glitches, since the Mew glitch can be used to get any Pokemon as low as Lv 1.
As cool as that would be, Pokemon Stadium 2 doesn't have the possibilty for anomalous Pokemon since the Petit and Pika Cups are replaced with the Challenge and Little Cups. Little Cup is basically Petit Cup, except every Pokemon is Level 5, which is what Pokemon Eggs hatch in Gens 2 & 3 (the fan-made competitive scene Smogon would adapt this as one of their metagames later), while Challenge Cup gives you a completely random set of Pokemon (minus Legendaries) and it's up to you to make the most use of whatever bizzare set you end up with. So yeah, no format with Level 18 Dragonites in Stadium 2 unfortunately.
Anything that can be caught via Max Raids can be Level 20, so long as one Switch has all the badges while the other has no badges. The Switch with no badges catches the Dynamax Pokemon and it downgrades to Level 20 because they have no badges.
It's so different hearing your voice after tuning in to your Strongest Characters and other series from years ago where you never talked. Great video though! Just wanna clarify that Lv.2 was the low bar for Pokémon because until Gen III, Lv.1 to Lv.2 was bugged for some Pokémon's experience curves, and gaining a low number of EXP would jump it straight to 100. Despite that they fixed it they just kept the tradition of Wild Pokémon never being below 2 except in very rare circumstances, and they did take an extra generation to change the level of newly hatched Egg Pokémon.
I never knew about getting Parasect into the Pika Cup. That’s cool. I myself plowed through Pika Cup both round 1 and 2 with a level 20 Alakazam back in the day. A level 15 Dragonair handled what it couldn’t.
This was really well done. It was entertaining as an idea as well as interest and you didn't miss out on pointing out which of the pokemon are competitively viablein Red Blue and Yellow. I don't cover gen1 as much as gen2 in videos but I gotta say, nice one champ.
It would be really awesome to have a modern version of Stadium to do all these special themed cups with all generation pokemon. Especially with those cool arenas and the announcer spicing things up! The last one we got was Battle Revolution and only went up to gen 4. We've doubled that now!
Same can be done with a Dragonair from Yellow. That's why Dragon Rage and Sonicboom are banned from the Little Cup, in Stadium 2, and the Sunny Park Colosseum (I think that's what it's called) the second time around, in Battle Revolution.
Yes. Level 1 was a programming issue in gen 1 and 2. Under flow glitch could cause them to immediately become level 100. Gen 3 fixed the issue but they kept with level 5 eggs for whatever reason.
Excellent video; however, you did a mistake: Eevee is given away at level 25 in the Gym Leader Castle, not at level 20 like many players assume, so it and its Eevelutions are not available in the Pika Cup. At the end, there are 109 eligible pokémon plus 3 that are only available as Rentals (Koffing, Ponyta and Seel) plus 3 that are exclusive of Japan (Golem, Kangaskhan and Muk).
Then, if you keep Gen 2 in mind (they didn't make a list for which Pokemon are allowed, so technically 149 Pokemon can be used), the number of Pokemon that are available for legit use goes to 137. 138 for the Japanese Golem.
Even without it you can get by pretty easily with Alakazam (or even kadabra) and Starmie. Gyarados is a decent option too with Dragon Rage always doing 40 damage.
Really nice subject and video, which made learn something new today: About a year ago, I used to curse against a particular trainer in Stadium's Pika Cup, because said trainer loved to use a Lvl 20 Tentacruel and to my knowledge at that point there were no Tentacruels at that level in RBY, so I used to call that trainer as a cheater and this video proved me wrong. Also it brought me back so many memories of trying to beat Pika Cup with as many Pokemon as possible for the Hall of Fame and the fabled Psyduck with Amnesia reward.
I remember this was the only cup my sister could not win. She always told me it was the most difficult one... I don't remember much about the actual difficulty tho.
It's not that hard with your own pokemon. Dragon Rage is busted ridiculous doing guaranteed 40 damage to anything and it was a TM back in gen 1 meaning quite a few things learned it. Failing that Starmie and Alakazam (or even Kadabra) are stupid strong in gen 1 as is, let alone a format that blocks some of their soft counters in Tauros and Snorlax and Psychic's 30% chance (in gen 1) to drop special which included special attack and defense in one. Yeah psychic was fair and balanced back then. I 'could' try with rentals now and see how it goes.
@@Peachrocks5 My sister's problem was that she did not think to raise pokés specifically for this cup, like you said. She either used rentals or the level 20s~15s she had on her file from finishing the dex. But if she cared enough and had the patience to go out of her way to build a strong level 20 Alakazam (which was very difficult because we had no link cable), I'm sure she could have done it. Maybe one day in the future we could try to attempt it again 🤔
Lovely video. I was inspired to finally assemble my pikacup round 2 team after fishibg up a level 15 Dragonair in yellow initially just to give it a slot in the victory palace with a proper name. Truly a case of "I came looking for copper and I found gold." Unfortunately, Lance the Dragonair just sat and watched as Sirius the Starmie and Teller the Alakazam cleaned up the field
the pokemon company: we don't condone the use of cheating, illegal movesets, illegal levels, etc. also the pokemon company: oh it's fine if the AI does it. seriously while i love stadiums music and atmosphere, it only highlights the worst aspects of g1 by introducing blatantly cheating ai. seriously. we got illegal movesets, illegal levels, even illegal NICKNAMES. this game aged like milk from a difficulty standpoint.
I have this weird pipe dream of setting up local Pokemon Stadium tournaments with all the weird rules and formats like Pika cup and the such. But with old school teambuilding would take a nightmarish amount of time. Even with cheats it would be tedious. ...Uh, anyway, cool video! I love topics like this.
So I guess a powerful Pika Cup team would be: LV 15 Dragonair (with Dragon Rage, it's super broken in this cup) LV20 Alakazam LV20 Starmie LV15 Rhydon (Rhydon, despite other gens, is a physical powerhouse in Gen 1, only surpassed by Tauros) LV15 Chansey (Yes, it's a pain to get, but it's too versitile to not to) The last Pokemon is pretty much filler. You can choose any you want.
You can also get a lv 15 Psyduck with Amnesia (a move it normally can’t have) as a reward for filling out the Hall of Fame dex in Stadiums gym challenge. Even though you cannot evolve it for the Pika Cup. Having Golduck with Amnesia is a pretty good option in higher cups!
9:45 If I remember correctly, the formula for a Pokemon's max HP is (2*Base HP*Level)/100+10+Level, before IVs and EVs are taken into account Since Diglett's base HP is 10, a Level 1 Diglett with no IVs or EVs in HP would have (2*10*1)/100+10+1 20/100+10+1 11.2 I believe this rounds down to 11 HP. 19:31 - I like Lickylicky, too, but for a different reason. When I was much younger (say, 10 years old), I saw a Gen 4 Pokemon movie or an episode of the Pokemon Anime or something where there was a very ham-fisted prince with an equally hammy Lickylicky, and I just loved them. I don't remember anything else about this Gen 4 Pokemon Movie/Anime episode, apart from another trainer with a Gallade who assists the main characters.

Yeah thinking back using Alakazam, it makes me feel dirty because that thing was so busted. It was anyway, but at least Tauros, Snorlax and Persian could do solid damage to it. Too bad all of those were effectively banned. Oh, I also used Gyarados with Dragon Rage for guaranteed 40 damage against things level 15-20. Extra balanced!
Back then I just bread and hatched one egg from Gold Silver and Crystal from gen 2 and traded them to Yellow from gen 1 also taking 1 each from Blue and Red then transfered them all onto the n64 to get a perfect team with good moves to beat this cup. I was lucky enough to have four transfer paks all Pokemon GB Games and both Stadium 1 and 2.

@@EvolutionArchive23 And also said Pokemon Stadium was how they could get Pikachu learn Surf (without glitches of course), and since outside Japan the real 1st Pokemon Stadium was never released, the Surf Pikachu bonus was coded in the international releases of the real Pkmn Stadium 2 in place of two Stadium Tournaments.
For clarity, the Pokémon Stadium we got overseas is essentially Japan's Pokémon Stadium 2. The original Stadium only had 42 out of the 151 Pokémon available for use. IIRC the rest of them were supposed to be added in a 64DD expansion but that obviously never happened.
My usual team consists of Lapras, Dragonair, and Gyarados. They're bulky for the tier, can dish out massive damage, and they all can learn Dragon Rage, which destroys most of the cup.
For any Safari Zone Pokémon that can be found at the right levels in Red/Blue, you can use the Seafoam Islands Coast Glitch to catch them without having to resort to the Safari Zone mechanics. This should not count as a rule violation because the Pokémon CAN technically be caught without the glitch, the glitch just makes it easier to do. Sadly, I don't think that's an option in Yellow, so Chansey and Scyther aren't so lucky.
Yeah, if you want to use glitches like that, all 149 Pokemon would be eligible since they can be obtained through the extended Mew Glitch (using a wild Ditto).
@@Mrperson0 like they said the glitch just make them more easy to catch in the same location, is not like they are making pokemon impossible to catch to catch.
A level 1 Diglett has 11 HP, the lowest possible amount barring Shedinja. It may reach 12 HP with high enough IVs and EVs. This also made me look up the highest possible HP value at level 1. A hypothetical level 1 Blissey would have 16 HP, 17 if it has very high HP IVs and EVs. Chansey's stuck at 16. Speaking of humble beginnings...
Probably something like: Alakazam lvl 20, Gyarados lvl 20, Starmie lvl 15, Dragonair lvl 15, Raichu lvl 15, Lapras lvl 15. Dragon rage and psychic abuse for days. Raichu, in case someone else has Starmie/Lapras and don't forget it learns surf. You could even make a case for using Kababra AND Alakazam because of how busted Alakazam is but that would mean using a level 19/16/16 set up instead of 20/15/15 which means no Gyarados. You could probably substitute Dugtrio in there over one the level 15's, maybe Lapras if you want electric coverage and less electric weakness, but really dragon rage and psychic abuse is all this format is.
I was wrong about Eevee from the Gym Leader Castle, they are also at level 25, so it and its evolutions are ineligible.

Trading Alakazam to Gen 2 and teaching it the three elemental punches from the Goldenrod Pokemart makes it even better
I literally did that years ago when I fully beated Pokemon Stadium for the 2nd time, that Alakazam was busted.

You can also use 16/16/18 and 16/17/17. 😎
This is why they decided to just use the "No Mew allowed" rule, since they had no clue what the limit would be with tradebacks.
kinda interesting topic, never stopped to think so much in the levels you find these pokemon. great video o/
Err I thought the international trading issue was only solved in Gen 4 (besides Korea)
@@NeoGraena Nope, gen 3 can do it too, there are some oddities with displaying non-Japanese names in the Japanese versions (it will only display the first 5 letters and they will be in all-caps fullwidth) but it does work assuming you can get the different language carts together.
@@AztecCroc what happens with japanese named Pokémon?
Git voiceover :D
Also, wow, Japanese Blue actually considered how some people wouldn't be able to acquire Pokemon like Golem or Gengar and put ways to obtain them in the game.
And Raichu BREAK(that's my headcanon of the English DORIS trade)
Yeah, level 1 Pokémon was a programming issue. They can overflow and crash the games.
Not crash the games, but rather some Level 1 Pokemon level up immediately to Level 100.
Or so I hear.
Every single time I play generation one I do the level 100 Nidoking Glitch.
@@Silver_Sonic_23 Or even the level 100 Mew Glitch, luckily it can learn any and every TM in the game and Nidoking has a good variety of TM moves it can learn
I liked the "Pokédex Roll" before talking about each evo line. It's a cool way of doing things
I'd love to see a follow up for the Gen 2 tradebacks. Definitely don't bother with glitches, since the Mew glitch can be used to get any Pokemon as low as Lv 1.
I love finding out about new things nobody cares about so I can start caring about them
Quite a specific topic and long video thanks to the 150 Pokémon. Yet it turned out great and high quality. You deserve some praise
Always love to see more Pokémon content. Hopefully we'll get to see you cover Stadium 2 as well.
Merry Christmas JoDo.
Imagine if there was an equivalent for modern games: Level 5 Landorus from B2W2, Level 9 Salamence from SM, ALL Pokémon from Let's Go at level 3.
Anything that can be caught via Max Raids can be Level 20, so long as one Switch has all the badges while the other has no badges. The Switch with no badges catches the Dynamax Pokemon and it downgrades to Level 20 because they have no badges.
Game logic
3:04 Early artwork issues, don't mind that, you'll get better in Yellow! 😅
(5:22) i never imagine an sentimenal arbok. Its cute tho

Also, PBR was only battles, none of the other minigame stuff that people sometimes enjoyed too.
This is definitely something that really helped me for Pokemon Stadium. Thank you so much for this info.
Gyarados & Arcanine with Dragon Rage, just a Bloodbath for Pika Cup :p
Same can be done with a Dragonair from Yellow. That's why Dragon Rage and Sonicboom are banned from the Little Cup, in Stadium 2, and the Sunny Park Colosseum (I think that's what it's called) the second time around, in Battle Revolution.
I always thought that Pika Cup was the hardest and most unfair cup of all in the game.
You definitely weren't the only person. I was in the process of making a version of every Pokemon legal in the Pika Cup across my Gen 1 games.
Hey this was super interesting, thanks for making it!
Yes. Level 1 was a programming issue in gen 1 and 2. Under flow glitch could cause them to immediately become level 100. Gen 3 fixed the issue but they kept with level 5 eggs for whatever reason.
Solid video, it's my first time seeing your channel and I can't wait to see more
Hey, this isn't the WhoIsThisGit I've gotten used to! Where's the text talk?
(clarification: this is a joke)
I'm not sure but i also think this is the only voice video without subtitles in the video, although it is compensated with UA-cam (manual) subtitles.
i like this git.
His voice is nice.
Looks built around buying the yellow version.
Even without it you can get by pretty easily with Alakazam (or even kadabra) and Starmie. Gyarados is a decent option too with Dragon Rage always doing 40 damage.
I literally subbed 5 minutes ago. Nice!
25:58 weird scientist walking sideways facing you
Really nice subject and video, which made learn something new today: About a year ago, I used to curse against a particular trainer in Stadium's Pika Cup, because said trainer loved to use a Lvl 20 Tentacruel and to my knowledge at that point there were no Tentacruels at that level in RBY, so I used to call that trainer as a cheater and this video proved me wrong.
Also it brought me back so many memories of trying to beat Pika Cup with as many Pokemon as possible for the Hall of Fame and the fabled Psyduck with Amnesia reward.
Never thought I’d see the day where I actually run into somebody who also likes Lickilicky
Interesting topic, love learning more about a game that I loved and played endlessly as a child. Thanks for the video(:
Neat video! Thanks for uploading! & Happy New Year!
I remember this was the only cup my sister could not win. She always told me it was the most difficult one... I don't remember much about the actual difficulty tho.
Well why don't you try yourself
Truly a case of "I came looking for copper and I found gold."
Unfortunately, Lance the Dragonair just sat and watched as Sirius the Starmie and Teller the Alakazam cleaned up the field
the pokemon company: we don't condone the use of cheating, illegal movesets, illegal levels, etc.
also the pokemon company: oh it's fine if the AI does it.
seriously while i love stadiums music and atmosphere, it only highlights the worst aspects of g1 by introducing blatantly cheating ai. seriously. we got illegal movesets, illegal levels, even illegal NICKNAMES.
this game aged like milk from a difficulty standpoint.
So I guess a powerful Pika Cup team would be:
LV 15 Dragonair (with Dragon Rage, it's super broken in this cup)
LV20 Alakazam
LV20 Starmie
LV15 Rhydon (Rhydon, despite other gens, is a physical powerhouse in Gen 1, only surpassed by Tauros)
LV15 Chansey (Yes, it's a pain to get, but it's too versitile to not to)
The last Pokemon is pretty much filler. You can choose any you want.
I was wondering why you didn’t mention the game corner as well
This was needed. Also hello three years later
I'd love a video about who's eligible including Gen 2. Eevee, Tauros, Lapras, and electabuzz come to mind
You can also get a lv 15 Psyduck with Amnesia (a move it normally can’t have) as a reward for filling out the Hall of Fame dex in Stadiums gym challenge. Even though you cannot evolve it for the Pika Cup. Having Golduck with Amnesia is a pretty good option in higher cups!
wonder if you would add the japanese versions of red and green n blue to the equasion
edit: he did add blue idk about red and green.
A level 20 Starmie in the Pika Cup is so OP, that you just build the rest of your team with any random rentals and let Starmie do all the work.
You also have the option with vulpix in yellow at the game corner. I think you get it at 10 or 15 for cheap amount of coins.

If I remember correctly, the formula for a Pokemon's max HP is (2*Base HP*Level)/100+10+Level, before IVs and EVs are taken into account
Since Diglett's base HP is 10, a Level 1 Diglett with no IVs or EVs in HP would have
(2*10*1)/100+10+1
20/100+10+1
11.2
I believe this rounds down to 11 HP.
11hp? how much defence and special defence does it have? I want to know if it's literally impossible to not kill it

Rom and emulators?
@@ghoul1shgobl1n49 It's not the same. Plus emulation just looks plain awful because literally nobody is working on it. The ones that let you use the transfer paks have graphical glitches and can't even play the gameboy tower. I know emulators have speed up but it's not the same to me.
I actually ordered a copy of Pokemon Yellow
@@mrsuperheatran2794 there is actually a lot of gameboy advance emulators that are still being worked on today and can play gameboy games too some of them can even do cable link connection via internet if you try hard.

This is honestly such a fucking cool video. Very interesting. Good work.
Man pika cup in later gens would be so interesting
I was expecting at least one obscure event pokemon on the list xD
should also mention that rental gyarados has hydro pump, when it cannot learn it without using the mew glitch.
Start of video: who is this git?
End of video: I like this git. 🥳
What would this list look like w/ the help of 2nd Gen?
Fisher in the round 2 version of Pika Cup uses all the tricks in the book to get fully evolved Pokemon like it's no problem. I still think he's a no good cheater.
just learned today that you can catch a level 15 slowbro on route 12 from this video :O then again i havent played the game in years
So wait. If this the second game in Japan, then what was the first in Japan?
And what we got as "Stadium 2" was named "Stadium Gold and Silver" in japan

It's disturbing how I know most of this just by having played the literal shit out of Gen 1.
Can't say the same Gen 3 and afterwards.
I just caught that level 7 Chansey.
Even if you could get the low level Pokemon from Gen 2, they probably wouldn't be allowed in
My usual team consists of Lapras, Dragonair, and Gyarados. They're bulky for the tier, can dish out massive damage, and they all can learn Dragon Rage, which destroys most of the cup.
Did You Test Green?
green have same trades as japan red

19:31 FINALLY SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS
Great vid
And dratini crushes everything with dragon rage x.x
So whats the optimal party setup for the Pika Cup? Found the video very interesting, keep at it.
