How Many Pokémon Are Eligible For Pokémon Crystal's Level 10 Battle Tower?

  • Previously, I made a video based on Pokemon Stadium's Pika Cup and how many Pokemon were eligible for it, and now, a semi-sequel of sorts has arrived for generation 2.
    Pokemon Crystal introduced the now infamous Battle Tower to the series, however this original incarnation was different from what we've come to know and, er...
    This one allows you to use any of the (then) 251 Pokemon, including Mewtwo, Mew, Ho-oh, Lugia and Celebi.
    But because this was back before they apparently had the ability to temporarily lower your Pokemon's levels to 50 for the battles, this battle tower only allows you to enter teams with levels in increments of ten: 100, 90, 80 and so on, all the way down to 10.
    This is even lower than the level 15 to 20 requirement for the Pika Cup, and as such, you'll probably automatically write off even more Pokemon from having any chance of entering.
    Well, that's where this video comes in. I'm curious to find out the exact number and use (almost) all means necessary to do so.
    But before we get started, I'd like to set a few rules and guidelines.
    - Firstly, and most obviously, no alterations through the use of cheat devices will count. I don't think I need to explain why.
    - Any Pokemon that can be obtained at least level 10 will be considered eligible, but I'll try to find them all at the lowest levels possible.
    - This time, any game from generation 1 and 2 is allowed to be considered in order to fulfill my goal. This is because generation 2 was clearly designed with generation 1 connectivity in mind, since some Pokemon cannot be obtained in gen 2 at all otherwise.
    - Pokemon that can only be obtained at level 10 through the use of glitches will not count. I'd rather not count anything that wasn't meant to be in the game to begin with.
    And one final note before we begin. With the addition of breeding in generation 2, it's now easy-peasy to obtain any first stage Pokemon from a line that can breed.
    Just stick them in the center with Ditto, then hatch the egg to get said Pokemon's first form at... level 5? It's just been born, yet it's a higher level than some Pokemon you find in the wild? Try not to think about it too much.
    Anyway, for any Pokemon that can be obtained this way, I'll just pass over them quickly with "Breed it" before moving onto the next form/Pokemon. Got it? Alright then, let's go!
    Some of the footage recorded by RichardDS90. If you're used to my standard form of videos and require subtitles, turn on the closed captions function.

    Ironically I remember losing a battle to unown in the battle tower. I had a scizor that had it's accuracy cut a few times by the pokemon prior. My Slash missed, unown used what must have been a fire type Hidden Power because it absolutely destroyed scizor, and I lost the fight.
    It was... humiliating, yea.

      If the ai sends in an unknown when they have more pokemon left, and your pokemon has a 4x weakness. Best believe that hidden power types coming out 😂

    Scizor actually has an amazing movepool for the battletower in crystal, as a support pokemon. It can learn agility double team swords dance all by level up, and can learn baton pass through breeding with ledian. So it can have access to any of its moveset by level 10 through breeding, and it makes an awesome support/setup for your sweeper.

    I personally think that a follow-up video discussing the best possible moveset(s) of the eligible pokemon would be a fun video idea, though obviously most of them would suck horribly.

    mabey a theory for all the low levelled fearows, raticate etc is the team rocket radio frequency somehow getting to them forcing the wild pokémon to evolve.

    I didn’t even know the Battle Tower was in Gen 2, let alone it’s odd Leveling system.
    Well, I liked the Pika Cup video, so I’m cool with this.

    For evolved low-levelled wild Pokémon, I think it’s possible that how we evolve Pokémon is basically expediting a slower process, since it’s implied some Pokémon will evolve in the wild under other conditions. For example, it states that when it reaches 100 years old, Onix becomes crystallized (turning it into the infamous Crystal Onix) before gaining the metal coat and evolving into Steelix, and these same crystals are seen when it Mega Evolves, somehow protruding from beneath the metal.

    On the machoke you're missing one important thing. Just don't let it evolve.
    Edit: so it turns out you can't cancel trade evolutions in gens 1 and 2

      There is a way to not evolve trade evolutions. It requires Pokemon Stadium, though, with 2 transfer packs. You can move pokemon around like you would in a PC in Stadiums 1 and 2 and can even be done between the stadium game and the GB games. So you move the machoke you caught in gen 2 into a box in Stadium 2 while not having any gen 2 moves, then move it into a gen 1 game and bam! Viable machoke for the pika cup.

    • @rolandorga9212
      @rolandorga9212 Рік тому

      No. You see, once you get the Machoke it will start evolving, so you cannot get it deposited into your pc to use that stadium trade.

      Aerodactyl is way faster and learns Dragon Rage as a TM in Generation 1

    • @paulnewton2284
      @paulnewton2284 2 роки тому +9

      To get a Level 10 Aerodactyl in Gen 2 with Dragon Rage, you need to do transfer shenanigans. First of all the only Aerodactyl you can get in GSC is from an in-game trade for a Chansey, which can only be found in the wild at level 25-28, and when you revive Aerodactyl in RBY, it's level 30.
      This means you either need to transfer an RBY Aerodactyl to GSC so you can breed a level 5 Aerodactyl, breed the traded Aerodactyl, or breed a level 5 Chansey to trade for a level 5 Aerodactyl.
      Then, you need to transfer your low level Aerodactyl to RBY, teach it Dragon Rage via TM, then transfer it back to GSC. Dragon Rage is not listed as an Egg Move for Aerodactyl in GSC, so I don't think you could hatch an Aerodactyl that knows Dragon Rage, even if both of its parents are Aerodactyl who know Dragon Rage.
      However, all that work nets you the fastest legal Dragon Rage in the game, coming off of Aerodactyl's base 130 speed.
      Smeargle is the third fastest option with 75 base speed, eclipsed by Mew's base 100 (but good luck getting a legal Mew), and beating out Charmander's 65, Growlithe, Lapras, and Horsea's 60, and Dratini's 50.

    the one thing i always found unfortunate is how gen 2 is the series first battle tower but its obscure since you'd have to explore olivine
    i recall finding the battle tower in crystal when i was around 6-10 years old(i'm 25 currently) but promptly forgot about it all these years afterwards.. man time flies

    Mew was given away at level 5 in official events and Celebi was given away at levels 2 or 5; however, they're banned from the levels 10-60 of the Battle Tower. In the case of Lugia, Ho-Oh and Mewtwo, they're also banned in the levels 10-60.

    Level 10 Battle Tower is hilarious with Dragon Rage existing. Smeargle is your sleep lead and basically always kills something slower than it even if it's a 2HKO. Aerodactyl (Arcanine for hipster points) is the cleaner, and Blissey is the pivot.

    And the best part? You're the only one with these restrictions. The AI has no such limitations on any of these Pokemon. You can battle any of the 251 Pokemon in the level 10 branch. So if you plan on winning, go all out with the best possible picks you can get. And be prepared for Mewtwo and Celebi.

    18:02 Could you elaborate on that part? Or even make a video about it? I can't imagine what it was like without Ditto for the entire year that it took FireRed and LeafGreen to come out.
    Off the top of my head: your starter would HAVE to be female to get more, which is hard because the 7:1 ratio and Metagross, one the best Pokémon of the entire game was post-game only that was incredibly easy to mess up (i.e. evolve before it gets Meteor Mash on level 50 as Metang), and you had no second chances because of no Ditto, which would have meant to beat the game again.

    • @whoisthisgit
      @whoisthisgit  2 роки тому +13

      Here's the story behind it: When I got Pokemon Ruby, my brother got the Sapphire version as well. I chose Torchic (Who just happened to be a female without trying, I have a bizarre luck when it comes to that) but I asked that he chose Treecko (Male) first, send it to my game, then start the game again and he selects Mudkip (Male) so we'll have all of them.
      I didn't think for one moment that Ditto wouldn't be in the game, so Treecko and Mudkip were evolved before I could get Mudkip and Marshtomp's entries and he could get Treecko and Grovyle's. Eventually, I got to a point when Mudkip and Marshtomp were the only Pokemon I didn't have, which by this point, my brother was bored with the game and let me restart his game to get it.
      He probably would have sold the game later on anyway and I highly doubt he cares about this at all anymore, but I still feel guilty about it to this day and sometimes wish I just waited until Fire Red/Leaf Green to finish it off.

    • @Igorcastrochucre
      @Igorcastrochucre 2 роки тому +2

      Yeah, since I wasn't there when Gen 3 cut off from Gen 2, I can only imagine how hard it was to start from scratch with all the stuff they added. And the Ditto absence is an incredible oversight, interesting for the competitive that was limited to those 200, but hell if you wanted to do stuff like Chain or TM breeding, or just not wanting to catch a female Pokémon every time.

      It also made it impossible to get Eevee until FRLG since the starter Espeon and Umbreon in Colosseum are always male.

    • @Goji505
      @Goji505 8 місяців тому

      @@IgorcastrochucreDitto being absent was fully intended so that you couldn't obtain Pokémon like the Kanto Eeveelutions by breeding the Espeon or Umbreon (which were both locked to male for the same reason) from Colosseum before the release of FireRed and LeafGreen.
