So much to this game that makes it the goat. Not to mention that you could run your Yellow version at 3x speed when playing it thru the port and unlock a surfing Pikachu/Raichu 👀
Pokemon Stadium was my first game which came with the N64 and I truly love that game to this day, the Pokemon games of modern times, especially when you are by yourself are not really fun to play with due to Covid and other circumstances and that why games like Pokemon stadium really allowed you to feel like you were in the game, and thats why I love it to this day.

I always talk to friends that the most magic moment in games history to me is when industry went from 2D based do 3D based games in 5th generation. Just like you said, growing up with 8-bit Pokémon, 16-bit Mario, etc and then suddenly everything is 3D, alive, explorable, in front of your eyes? That was a delicious punch into the brain!
It's actually quite amazing how Pokemon Stadium 2 is technically better, yet the simplicity of the first just makes it the more memorable game. I've own both since release and still do, but my go to is the original. Love both though

Thank you for sharing, I grew up playing Pokémon stadium as a kid and always enjoyed it along with other games as well. As an adult now I am making it one of my goals to collect all the games and shows that I had as a kid including Pokémon stadium. Anyways I just love the game and I never had a chance to play Pokémon stadium 2 as a kid so recently I bought it to try it out and come to find it basically a continuation of 1 which is nice
I remember I had Pokémon Stadium 1 & 2 (among other things) as hand-me-downs from my uncle. I remember I got really into Pokémon Stadium for a stretch. I specifically remember a few times playing them in my room early in the morning with the tv at a low volume as to not wake anyone else up. Fond memories to be sure. Luckily I still have both cartridges considering how ridiculous some of the retro prices can be these days.
I wanted the n64 just because of this game. I sold everything (the whole stadium package) in college and obviously regret it now but it's unbelieveable how they made this such an enjoyable game. I forgot about those minigames, the commentator and the menus. I played Battle Revolution on the Wii years later and it didn't come anywhere near this but didn't really know why. Seeing it summed up in your video I remember how I felt playing and how they went out of their way to make it a great and complete experience. Thanks dude!
I was born in 1996 and this was my first Pokemon game and I love it so much. I would pay 100 $ for a very good remastered version for the switch immediately.
Remember the minigames from pokemon stadium 2. The game where you played as metapod, where you had to harden in order to avoid being crushed by rocks was gold.
I was a big Gen 1&2 fan growing up and have played through most of the mainline games, along with some of the spinoffs. I never played Stadium 1&2 until the past year when a friend showed it to me. They're both great games, and I think you'll find that Stadium 2 is fun to play as well! I personally like the Gen 2 minigames more. This game made me bring out my old N64, buy Stadium 1&2 for myself. I also recently purchased Colosseum and Battle Revolution, although I'm not expecting either to be as good as its predecessors!
Pokemon Stadium is still fantastic! I'm playing through it again on my channel. I was one of the few pointing out how much better the animations were than nowadays too lol Great video btw, & you should've touched upon the lab where you can store, manage, & even receive Gift Pokemon from beating the Elite 4! The Pokemon games nowadays are a bit of a let down, but I do hope we get a new Stadium or successor to it in the future.
@@burnout713 Nah, the Gamecube games are easily the peak of that subgenre by default for having an actual single player campaign, rather than just battle battle battle until you win.
@@V-Jes Well yes, I don't even count those since they have actual campaigns. Although I might still argue Battle Revolution over XD. Really wasn't a fan of that campaign.
Because PBR failed. And it's easy to see why PBR failed: It was straight up a Battle Frontier and if you didn't have a copy of a DS game (It worked with Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver) there were very little Pokémon to work with - the choice between the mid-stage Kanto starters and a few select mid-stage Pokémon to round out the team, or mid-stage Sinnoh starters with other mid-stage Pokémon to round out the team. No Mini-games to break the tension, Storage was a different application (My Pokemon Ranch, which had its own issues), and no single player adventure experience to make up for the loss of either. The only saving grace PBR had over the main games at the time was the ability to battle online against random opponents, a feature that was added to the main series with Gen 5, and once Gen 6 and onwards utilized models over sprites, the need for a 3D Battle Sim ended.
I own the Eon64 it’s dope for ppl who don’t want to mod their console. The first time i played Pokémon Stadium was when i worked at blockbuster video when i was 12. Great video as always
The transfer pack really created longevity for the game. You have your Pokémon journey, bring Pokémon you you collected into the game was just absolutely amazing. I see tastes of Stadium in Sword in Shield. It's very similar in tone that there is a competitive tournament going on within the world. I wish though the games would just simply capture this feel more. Create an open world like Archeus that just came out with this stadium vibe and that's the dream game.
You forgot to mention you could store Pokémon and items in Prof. Oak’s lab. I loved the fact I could keep my old Pokémon if I wanted to start a new game.
I have never heard anyone give such a glowing review of Pokemon Stadium, I love seeing it. This was my favorite N64 game too. You gotta try Stadium 2. I don't have as much nostalgia for it, but if you judge it on its own merits then you'll find what's actually the objectively better game. I don't prefer it because I'm a very nostalgia and sentimental based person, but truth is it's an incredible game. Review it, please! And yes, "New Pokemon Stadium" would be INCREDIBLE. Bring back the same announcer lol
I think a new Pokémon Stadium for the Switch should be a digital only game, & Nintendo should allow the game to be 100GB+. That should be enough for high quality models & animation.
Fun fact the announcer in stadium and stadium 2 was the original voice of James in the Anime he only did it from episode two to episode 12 or 13 before getting recasted he then went on to do Bakura in Yu-Gi-Oh and many other anime
The first 2 generations will NEVER be recaptured PERIOD! we seriously need another pokemon stadium game, dunno how they would do the transfer pak for the switch but it must be done.
I want a New Stadium that's not just a console exclusive. I want it as an app that piggy-backs on Pokemon Home, under the assumption that we can battle with ALL the Pokemon available to us in our Home.
I am enjoying this on the switch. I played it once at a mates house years ago and didn’t know there was so much to it back then. I can’t even remember the commentator.
One of the developers at game freak said in an interview that to make a new Pokémon Stadium the Stadium series would “have to innovate”. Basically it’s probably not going to happen because 3D battles (the draw of Stadium at its time of release) isn’t a draw today because of the games now exclusively being in 3D.
Insane thought: what if idle animations were different for each Nature? What differences would a Timid or Calm Pokémon have verses a Bold or Adamant Pokémon?
You'll be surprised how much lines the commentator has. I recently beaten the game on my N64 and the announcer has just so much lines I never heard with growing up with the game as a child with only rentals. The game also looks really good for it's time. Also just a sidenote: Pokemon was just at it's peek popularity then. It's only now just hitting this peek popularity once again since the release of Pokemon Go.
I’m 17 and I remember back wen I was 5 years old that time I was searching threw my brothers wardrobes and found the N64 games and picked up Pokémon Stadium 2 I still remember that dam Image of Ho-Ho on the game and intro that cry has stuck with me as well as the image of hoho spreading its wings And I never got to have him as a Pokémon to play Stadium on but I still remember it till this day as well as Scizer and the sound of its Pincers and charizard in general with charmander and charmeleon I love these games and I would love to have a stadium 3 even if it looks like that it would be Amezing and bring me back to those times were I would play smash bros with my bother and ask myself how does he keep one shotting me with the Black baseball bat- Good times
For anyone wondering how detailed the announcer was, there were even voicelines created for level disadvantages, and attacks that are not very effective dealing tons of damage
pokemon stadium was great, i wish they made another entry in that series for today. another thing Matty didn't mention was if you beat one of the cups, you actually won a special pokemon that could be transferred to your other games, i got a special psyduck, can't rememebr if it was always it, but i thought that was really cool, plus your pokemon you transferred kept their levels, whereas the borrowed ones were always level 50, imagine a stadium game made today that worked with the modern games...
I still have both Pokemon Stadium 1 (and 2) for Nintendo 64 and play them on a weekly basis! Even after all these years and as an adult, I will say this game is extremely difficult to complete if you are relying heavily on the rented Pokemon only - especially Round 2! I have no idea how I was able to get so far as a child! LOL This is Gen 1 we are talking about where there were no Items, Abilities, Dark/Steel/Fairy types and only limited to 151 Pokemon. I would love to see a remake of this game with all the features we see in Pokemon today.

Matty I love Defining Duke but I had no idea you did a retro games channel. This is awesome! Consider me subscribed.
The realistic cries and commentator got me hooked
Matty! I totally didn’t know you had another channel, good to see ya! 😅
That’s crazy I bought my Pokémon stadium for $30 online
I don't know where he found those prices I looked on ebay they are not selling over the hundreds currently
I never had a gameboy, the transfer pack was my first experience of those games. Pokemon yellow 💛
Pokémon stadium 1 and 2 was ahead of its time I still play it to this day
THE MINI GAMES ! 11/10! - And as a Kid i could connect my Gameboy Pokemon red to a N64 Game looked like alientech. :D Loved it.
Pokemon Stadium is still fantastic! I'm playing through it again on my channel. I was one of the few pointing out how much better the animations were than nowadays too lol
Great video btw, & you should've touched upon the lab where you can store, manage, & even receive Gift Pokemon from beating the Elite 4! The Pokemon games nowadays are a bit of a let down, but I do hope we get a new Stadium or successor to it in the future.
You definitely need to go through Gen 2, best Pokemon ever was & will be imo.
I started in Gen 1, but Gen 2 was all of it & more!
I remember playing this at 6 or 7 years old thinking "this is what pokemon games are going to be like now?!" Completely amazed.
What a game, the nostalgia is real this was my childhood
100%. I can't believe I don't think about Stadium more often. It really was ahead of its time.
This game was and is one of the most formative influences in my life. I would not be who I am without it.
i love your videos and content bro!
God bless my parents for getting me pokemon stadium and N64. So many precious memories 🥹❤️
Man, I was playing this when I was 4. I'm 23 now....thanks for that crisis, matty.
Battle Revolution is an incredible experience for the Wii, it's a shame that they stopped this style
Easily the peak of that subgenre.
After Stad2 they didn't keep the custom cries which I loved very much and still refer to most of the time when I see any pokemon in any game
Literally one of my favorite games I miss this so much
I own the Eon64 it’s dope for ppl who don’t want to mod their console. The first time i played Pokémon Stadium was when i worked at blockbuster video when i was 12. Great video as always
The memories!!
I loved Pokémon Stadium, but Pokémon Stadium 2 was even better. I lived on that game :D.
Love your shirt, also this game slaps
U gotta play the second one! That's my favorite personally, mini games are great!
Pokemon Stadium came out on March 6, 2000 in North America, so NOW it's 24 years old.
Pokemon Stadium deserved a reboot way more than Snap. And while I love both games, Pokemon Stadium 2 cant be topped. Its definitely worth your time.
stadium 1 minigames are legit, but stadium 2 minigames go hard asf. definitely give it a try sometime.
You forgot to mention you could store Pokémon and items in Prof. Oak’s lab. I loved the fact I could keep my old Pokémon if I wanted to start a new game.
Love that backdrop.
NINTENDO!! GIVE US POKEMON STADIUM ON THE NINTENDO SWITCH WITH THE ENTIRE 1000+ POKEMON ROSTER!! PLEASE & THANK YOU!!🔥
I have never heard anyone give such a glowing review of Pokemon Stadium, I love seeing it.
This is the best Pokemon game ever and I have a feeling it always will be
Thank you for this video. You did well. Most of what you said was very true. We share a similar childhood. 😅😅
1 and 2 will be my favorite retro games😂
I like how when Legends Arceus came out he said “That’s crazy...) * plays Stadium*
Pokemon in 3rd grade was so huge they confiscated our cards if they saw them at school. Wild times. Pokemon was on fire back in the day.
I never owned the game but my best mate had both. And yes, as a kid I was blown away by the commentary too 😅
For anyone wondering how detailed the announcer was, there were even voicelines created for level disadvantages, and attacks that are not very effective dealing tons of damage
pokemon stadium was great, i wish they made another entry in that series for today. another thing Matty didn't mention was if you beat one of the cups, you actually won a special pokemon that could be transferred to your other games, i got a special psyduck, can't rememebr if it was always it, but i thought that was really cool, plus your pokemon you transferred kept their levels, whereas the borrowed ones were always level 50, imagine a stadium game made today that worked with the modern games...
LOL
This is Gen 1 we are talking about where there were no Items, Abilities, Dark/Steel/Fairy types and only limited to 151 Pokemon. I would love to see a remake of this game with all the features we see in Pokemon today.
Hell yeah will love a stadium 3 been waiting 20 plus years they were so fun as a kid than you can connect your blue red or yellow team
RIP to all those corrupted save files when playing with a Red/Blue cart in the Transfer Pak.
I’m not even a big Pokémon fan at all but I do love stadium and snap on N64. Very well done games.
Technically a beast, We still play tournaments in my channel btw! Great video!
