  • Storm Babet battered the East Coast of Scotland and North East England and everyone had to batten down the hatches to weather the storm. Barry had to work hard to protect the Lynsey B from the worse effects of the weather, with all the fishermen helping each other out for several days.
Unfortunately there was some significant damage to the harbour and to some of the boats. Barry spoke to Rowan Davies, the Skipper of the Spitfire, about what happened to his boat during the storm and he also spoke to Dunbar's Harbour Master Fiona Kibby about what was going to be done to repair the damage.

What we all fail to take into account is the age of some harbour constructions , there is nothing more damaging than the constant pounding of the sea , when angry , i agree that this winter may be very destructive . Pull the boat and stay safe .

What a great video Barry / Jeff. Well done on walking around the harbour and helping other fishermen Barry. So sad to see that fishing boat sink, hope every one is safe. Great interviews as well Barry I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. Glad you are taking the Lynsey B out of the water I would be very sad if anything happened to her. It was forecast a 5.1 metre tide . I understand it was a 7.1 metre tide at the harbour mouth and a 10 metre tide out at the May Island. This did so much damage around the town plus all the damage at sea with the gear out on the water. I have total respect for all those fishermen at Dunbar who earn their living on these seas.

      Hi John
Thank you so much for your kind comment.
      You're absolutely correct, sir.
We were getting hit 7.1 m swells, and the May island I heard 10.4m which is a HUGE ground swell.
I'm not surprised on the Damage that was done not just to the fishing gear, but the harbours up and down the coast, but what gets me, is "STILL" No help from our fantastic government 😡.
Anyway, I'll not dwell on past tidings.

The water was 2,2 meters over normal in our harbour (Assens, Denmark), we adjusted our lines the day before the storm, and again when the water level fell. Under the highest water level the police stopped people going to the harbour for safety reasons. Nothing happened to any of the boats, a sail became loose on one of them, but a diver went out to it and tied it down.

Thankfully you have survived the storm Barry, but my heart goes out to those who didn't fair so well, particularly to those who lost everything 🥲
Your right, it was hard to watch, very hard, but thanks to you many now know just how devastating it was, until now all we have really seen is what the news services
chose to show us (nothing). You have done your whole community proud with this latest vlog, thank you. ❤
On a lighter note, anyone who watched saving lives at sea last week, will have seen the Lyndsey B moored in the harbour when the Dunbar D class was launched on a rescue mission. Now I don't know if you are aware of the UA-cam channel about the circumnavigation of the UK in a small 1970's Avon Rib, but his last vlog covered Cap Wrath to Thurso, I suspect his next episode will see him in your neck of the woods so keep your eyes peeled 👍

Nice to see the impact that breakwater has on the harbour when it is damaged. What hope does dunbar have without a permanent wall there after this, its caused havoc with all your boats and my poor blue boat aswell unfortunately.
Probably a wise choice to pull Lindsey B out for the winter and prepare for next year, save the fuel cost aswell. Look after the boat that has not only a job to do, but also to get you home safe, everytime you go to sea. Know the limits and never push them
Keep the spirits high and all will work out in the end

      Hi Calum
Well said, bud. You're absolutely correct. That broadhaven wall should be a permanent one, not one that gets washed away every bigger storm.

Yea that all pretty much bites hard. Way too many hulls in too small a harbor. That breakwater needs a few 20-ton anchors (blocks). Those half-ton stones got tossed like sand on the beach. I hate seeing any vessel go down due to weather. But at least all hands were on the beach. Pulling your boat for the winter is most likely the best idea you've had this season. No income. But no loss either. I wish you luck Bud. I truly do. Thanx for posting.

Thanks Barry for this vlog. It shows how these storms can affect the lives of our hard working fishermen. There is no glamour in fishing, it's just damn hard work, often for very little returns. The Government should be ashamed that they give no help to you brave souls. Yet they waste money to many undeserving areas such as foreign aid to countries like India who spend all of it on THEIR SPACE PROGRAMME. To Brazil who are oil rich but have corrupt government. We even give aid to CHINA who have the biggest trading area in the world. It's about time they helped our own industries like fishing.
OK Buddy my rant over, I feel for your fellow skippers who have lost everything in these devastating storms we are having. I am glad you're taking the Lynsey B out of the water for the winter, a very brave but correct decision. I hope your vlogs are still going to be done, perhaps showing the off boat items like creel making and other associated things to do with your gorgeous boat. Stay safe, we care !!

Fishermen by the nature of them want to be independent of government or anyone else, and like being a free spirit. If they accept government cash, you have government restrictions that goes with that money. Those harbours along the Forth are old and falling apart and no matter what money is spent on them it will never be adequate. It is fix one end and the other end is broken. For the wall to fall away as it did, just says it all with Thousands of pounds of boat hanging on to them in bad weather. Better to become fair weather fishermen as you are doing by lifting the boat out the water and knowing it is safe. And the heaver boats go to a better harbour for the winter.

Oh, it was heartbreaking seeing wee John's boat go over like that😢😢😔 poor soul indeed.
Yup, definitely the right foot forward this winter, I think.😁👌

    Thats scary stuff Baz .
Quick question. I live up the coast from you and as your having the harbour wall repaired could the harbour master not ask the council if they could utilise the old concrete blocks that are at Longniddry coastline. They were put in place to stop tanks incase of landings. They are huge concrete squares and would be perfect to put at the damaged part of the old harbour defence.
Just a thought. Hopefully the sunken boat is salvageable and gets repaired . Stay safe Baz and keep up the great work you and jeff do ❤

      Hi Graham.
As always, thank you for your kind comment and support, bud.😍😁👌
That is a good question, but I think the historical society would have something to say about that.🙈😂😂😂😂
Years ago, the councils were given the opportunity to get "free" concert anchor blocks put in. However, the council felt like it wouldn't tie in with the surrounding area😳🙄
I always wonder if that decision would be the same today?🤔🤷‍♂️😂😂😂
      All the best bud.😊

We live on a narrowboat and we've often thought about what it would be like to live in a coastal marina, your marina/harbour has been removed from the list 😂😂😂😂

Gday mate thats a serious storm i have watched your vlogs about doing the boat watch but to smash that sea wall wow that is some power , its good you included some interveiws with the young fella and also the harbour master puts more of bigger picture into the video and of course thanks to geoff carter im sure he would have preffered to be tuccked up in bed than down at the piers at some ungodly hour of the night mucking about with many men and there boats take care

      Hi Crisp buddy.
As always, thank you for your kind comment and support, brother.
Jeff, done really well at documenting what the boys have to do when these storms come about. And they seem to be happening more frequently 😬🙈. I, for one, really appreciated him being there to show the world, the other side of fishing and boat ownership.
I would love to think that this will help decide the best future in protecting our 400 year old harbour walls from this onslaught from the North Sea, but I'll not hold my breath as you know how the powers a be work.
Instead of dealing with a problem before it gets worse, they just wait to deal with the problem after the event, and then they can't afford to fix it🙄🙈
      Mental🙄🙄🙄😂😂😂😂
As always a ll the best buddy 😁👌

      Hi John.
She is indeed a displacement hull.
One of the best!💪😍😁👌 but I'm biased 🤣🤣🤣
She is a Cygnus GM ( Gary Mitchell) 21.
This type of hull has been the workforce of inshore fishing fleets throughout our country. Not many harbours don't have a GM21 in them.😁👌

      Hi 👋
      Yes, you are quite correct.
The branders are the big wooden blocks with D section rubber on them that you see at the start of the clip, where the spitfire is leaning on the Branders😁👌
