What a great way to start 2024 Barry! "Skippers and their boats" loved this blog and brought back many happy memories when I spent time in 1978 on a trawler "Glorious Dawn" that fished out of Portavogie, here in Northern Ireland. Tailing prawns, sorting fish all done on the open deck. Loved it. Don't think the MCA would've tho lol. These pen pushers need learn how real life works, too wake up and smell the coffee! Total Respect for the small inshore fishermen. Looking forward to what's coming in 2024 on OMAHB Take Care Skipper 👍 Pete
Hi Peter As always, thank you so much for your wonderful comment and for sharing your memories with us. We really appreciate your support. We look forward to bringing you what we can throughout 2024😁👌 Have a great weekend. All the best
Hi Pete. Thank you for your wonderful comment. You're absolutely bang on, very long hrs for this type of fishery. Let's hope this channel can enlighten folks who don't know.😁👌 Enjoy the rest of your weekend. All the best.😁👌
Hi guy's. We hope you're well and had a lovely festive period ❤️😍😁👌 We are so glad you enjoyed our vlog, and wee look forward to bring you more like this throughout 2024 and beyond 😁👌 Hope you both have a wonderful day. All the very best.😁

What an excellent and interesting video Barry. I really enjoyed this one, to get an insight into a fisherman's day / week is really good . Looking forward to the next " Skippers and their boats " Well done.
Hi Bill. As always, thank you so much for your wonderful comment and your support. It means the world to us. We look forward to bringing you more throughout 2024 and beyond 😍😁👌 Enjoy the rest of your weekend champ. All the very best.😁👌
Happy New Year Peter. We hope you and your family had a wonderful festive period. 😁👌 Thank you so much for your kind comment and support. We are so glad you enjoyed the 1st of vlogs in this series. All the best.😁
The MCA suspected a fishing boat owner wasn't paying proper wages to his deckhand and sent an auditor to investigate him. MCA: "I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them." Boat Owner: "Well, there's Clarence, my deckhand, he's been with me for 3 years. I pay him $1,000 a week plus free room and board. Then there's the mentally challenged guy. He works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of Bundaberg rum and a dozen Crown Lagers every Saturday night so he can cope with life. He also gets to sleep with my wife occasionally." MCA: "That's the guy I want to talk to - the mentally challenged one." Boat Owner: "That'll be me. What'd you want to know
😂😂😂 That's a cracker, Dave. But it is also probably true knowing these government types. 🙄 They ain't got a clue, and would 💩 themselves if they had a day at sea never mind a working week 😂😂😂😁👌 Thank you so much for sharing bud, gave me a right giggle.😂😂😂😁👌 All the best.😁
Hi Jackie. As always, thank you for your wonderful comment. I really think that this is the best thing about our channel is educating those who don't know. I just wish those in power that make these suffocating rules and regulations actually pay attention 🤷♂️🙈 We can all live in hope.😂😂😂😁👌 All the very best. Xxx
This was such a great interview I've passed by Spitfire so many times and it was great to hear all about her and see her working. It's so sad to hear that youngsters are being denied the opportunity to learn the trade from experienced fishermen I'm always wondering why so much is exported to Spain and France is it just they pay a higher price. Come on folks buy more seafood and support our hard, working fishermen they're amazing
Hi Anne. As always, thank you so much for your kind comment and support. We love it.😍😁👌 Yeah, the industry is getting crippled by these officials and office workers, is a damn disgrace what they have done to our industry in the last 30 years.😔 The boats are tied to the buyers and under a type of contract via our licence to only sell to the buyer, and buyer only🙄 more red tape🙈 We have to jump through hoops if we wish to set up direct from the boat, which would be lovely, but financially, for the fishermen, it's a big undertaking.🤷♂️🙈 All the very best Anne.😍😁👌
Another good one Barry, it gives an insight to the daily life of a prawn boat fisherman to those of us not fishing. It's good to see a 50 yr old boat still fishing, I guess it's not easy keeping on top of maintenance. Best of luck and safe fishing for 2024 to Rowan and Crew. You mentioned that The Spitfire was one of the last boats built at Dunbar, would it be possible to do a wee video on the history of Dunbar boatyard?
Hi buddy. As always, thank you so much for your kind comment. We are so glad you enjoyed our 1st vlog on this subject. We look forward to bringing you more.😁👌 Oh, that is something that we could think about, I'll need to get history society to help on this one🙈😂😂😂 I'm not that good with history, dates etc get passed me😂😂😂 Enjoy the rest of your weekend. All the very best.😁
Happy New Year Barry and Jeff Hopefully your year is full of lobsters and Government legislation free. Great video again and great insight into other hard working fishermen and boats. Brilliant 👏
Happy New Year, Graham. We hope you had a lovely festive period. 😁👌 We are so glad you enjoyed the vlog. We look forward to bringing you more like this throughout 2024 and beyond 😁😎 Enjoy the rest of your weekend. All the very best.😃

Hi Neil. Happy New Year! And we hope you're keeping well. Thank you so much, as always, for your kind comment and your support. Glad you enjoyed the vlog. All the very best, sir.
Was in the harbour yesterda and spotted Spitfire. Looks as tough as old boots, and watching another return to harbour in thar water, she would have to be. Also met some nice RNLI ladies who gave me a book on Dunbar's 200th lifeboat anniversary.....and I'm guessing Robert George Brunton is one of yours...
Hi Andrew Thank you for your comment. We really appreciate it. Yes, the Spitfire is old, but she's tough💪 she's been through a lot throughout her fishing career, and for an old lady, she's still going strong. Yes, Robert George was my grandfather, coxswain of the lifeboat for a long time😁👌 Enjoy the rest of your weekend. All the best.😁
Happy new year to you Barry, Its worth mentioning the MMO in this too with what seems to be more and more desk drivers pushing rules and regulation onto the industry, when they don't know much about, I couldn't get a job regulating the pharmacy industry.
Hey buddy. Happy New Year! I hope you and the boat are well. Yeah, most government groups are a hut of 💩 Can't stand any of them. How DARE they tell us how to do our jobs, jobs that we've been doing since childhood. I've probably forgotten more than they baskets know! But that is the world we live in these days....fishing days seem certainly numbered with these fools at the helm.😔 All the best and safe fishing for 2024😉👍
Great start to the new year Barry! Well spoken lad who definitely respects his family of fishermen. Maybe you can have a day catching prawns with him. I think it would make an interesting video Baz! All the best for a very successful 2024. Be safe!
Hi Terry. Thank you so much for your kind comment and suggestion. TBH, I'm not sure if I'll have time for that, but maybe later down the line, you never know😁👌😎 Enjoy your weekend. All the best. 😁👍
of coarse this is their end game to stop knowlege being passed down generations they allready stoped grandfather rights that put a stop to most ridfish fishermen fishing for s.a.l.m.o.n. in rivers its disgusting stoping the children helping at the peir and its because the government want everybody out the game dont let them keep making those vlogs barry your knowledge is pure gold to next generations wanting to fish
Hi Robin Thank you for your comment and input. This is exactly why I've made this channel, not only to show " EVERYONE " what fishermen have to do to earn a little crust, but to teach those willing to learn and hopefully get a career at sea🤞🙏 God knows the industry needs it.😎 Enjoy the rest of your weekend All the best😁👍
Hello William. Thank you for your kind and constructive comment.😁👌 We really appreciate your support. It means the world to us. ❤️ No wheelhouse for the Lynsey B, I'm afraid, it takes up too much room for a small vessel, it also acts like a sail in bad weather, and it would certainly upset those MCA reprobates for her stability. 🙄🙈😂😂😂😂 I actually love the way she's built. It works really well when hauling gear and all-around vision, which is very important when we are at sea.😁👌 We hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend. All the very best, sir.😉👍
What a stalwart of the industry , one question is there any log of running time in her time she must of clocked a few hrs up , I remember her at the scallops
Hi Carl. Thank you so much for your comment, we really appreciate your support. Oh their will be logs somewhere, you'll probably need half a lifetime to calculate those hrs up, especially in her younger days.😂😂😂😁👌 All the best.😁
Enjoyed this Barry well done..as for the gov looking after the industry they have just killed mine by taking pollock of the quota, they certainly weren’t taking the inshore fleet who fish hook and line into consideration, they could have reduced the quota right down but we could still fish but by putting them as by-catch only I can’t even fish for them
Hi Kevin. We are so glad you enjoyed this vlog. We look forward to bringing you more throughout the year. I'm so sorry about what the government has done to your fishery. It's unbelievable to me that their is accountability to their actions, and that's not just fishing, the country from top to bottom. Too many self-serving doosh bags making decisions on something they know nothing about, I mean, you wouldn't ask an electrician to bake a cake...it's just all madness. Guy fawkes had the right idea! All the best, bud. May thing hopefully get better for you all.🙏
@@onemanandhisboat I was speaking to the skipper and he had a "one of those fancy fangled new auto pilots" for the late 70s early 80s that was new and fancny fangled he hit the on off switch and it didnt respond sailed in bye the break waters and ended up high and dry, a totally genuine accident no doubt the mca would have had a field day with it to keep themselves in a job
Gday mate this is going to be a good series as i said before in a comment i follow a couple of young lads in tasmania and i was telling them about all the rules a regulations and how some have just packed it in as it is out of control with them the price might be 85.00 a kilo of that the they will get 50 it has just started a new season in november and the catch looked good on there last vlog but what people dont understand is they dont set the price for all the hours and working sometimes very dangerous conditions to get the general public there crays /lobsters and when they see it in the mongers shop at 115 .00 kg they blame the fisherman and this is how ignorant some of the public are ,they see the nice houses and cars but they dont see the terrible conditions these men have to work in all they see is the final price yes they do make some good money but sometimes they barley break even people should watch these videos and they might just change there minds (now you got me going ) anyway take care till the next vlog .
Wow! Absolutely well said, buddy. I think I need a sit down after that one, I could feel your rage as I was reading😂😂😂 You're absolutely right! You'll never see a fisherman with a big fancy house and car. That's all for the middle men. Most fishermen struggle to pay their house running costs, never mind extras. If only the public knew, let's hope we can change that 😁👌 Hope you had a fantastic festive period, bud. All the best.😉👍
Hi Barry. The Spitfire looks very dumpy in shape. Is there a reason for that. And is trawling a good thing or bad thing. There must be a lot of waste with the wrong catch in the nets
Hi Garry. As always, thank you for your comment. The spitfire was a shape of her time when 1st built. Their were half a dozen boats built this shape round our coast, all great boats because they had that wide beam and a deep draft that will always make a good tow boat. Trawling, it all depends on your perspective. Inshore isn't as damaging as the papers and greenpeace have you belive, remember these guys have an agenda, and the end of fishing is it.😔 The waste is only waste because them in offices ( that know better than us🙄) won't let us land it. Too many folks with a say and no idea run the management of this type of fishery, and if they let the boats land the edible fish their wouldn't be a problem, especially if quota was dished out fairly 😁👌 It's really a big can of worms, bud. 😂😂😂 All the best.
it wasnt a ford it was a 4 cylinder cat fuzz told me he put the 6 cylinder cat in so he would tow the gear remembering saying he built the spitfire for the creels probably why he only had the 4 cylinder fitted to her to start with think it is a 3306 cat remember fuzz also saying he got cat to come and boost it up to 300hp there isnt many boats in the scottish fleet with that sort of power for the size and age of the boat great fun towing over the top of hard ground with the hoppers on
Well, I know this Robin. That was before my time, I was only 1 when she was launched 🙈😂😂😂😂 All I know is that she's had a great career with a great skipper at the helm that's passed down a wealth of knowledge to the young, the way it should be.😍😁👍 All the best bud.😉👍
After watching ure video, on spitfire,if this doesn't happen already ,wouldn't it be beneficial, to lobster fishermen like ure self if any bye catch, from small trawles, rather being thrown back dead be kept for you to used by you in your pots, and you not having to go out and fish for bait to us
Hi Barry. Thank you so much for your comment. And you're correct. We do get "bait" from the trawlers, but it's an illegal practice by those people in offices that tell us how to do our job.. if any trawler is caught landing the bait ( basically undersized fish) on the pier, they can get very heavy fines from the fisheries departments. It's all really a non realistic show, from people who have no understanding of the job and zero conservation and sustainability in their mind. To them, it works great on paper, but practically, it's a disaster, just the CFP ( common fishery policy) Yes, our seas have to be managed, but jeezo, it doesn't take a genius to work it out to fish our seas better and more sustainably 🙈🙄😁👌 God Barry, you nearly started a Barry rant there!🙈😂😂😂😂 Thank you so much for your support. Have a great week, bud. All the very best.😁
I thought that BREXIT, was about getting shut of pointless bureaucracy and protecting our fishing industry. Seems nothing has changed. Do EU fishermen have the same restraints?
Hi Brian. Oh no, EU fishermen are having a grand old time. They can fish our waters unchecked, they can land in our country and not only be unchecked but untaxed as well....it's all slowly tighting the grip on killing our industry and giving to theirs 😞😡 Look at the poor Irish at the moment they are going through what we went through in the 90's, make it impossible for the boats to earn, then offer them decommissioning, then take their licenses and most importantly quota and sell it to the highest bidder, and since the EU boats have all the quota, they have plenty money, and it never goes back to the Irish boats...like you said Bureaucracy at it's finest 😞😡😡😡😡
Well done Barry for giving us an insight into being a fisherman 👍
Keep up the good work you two.
Hi Richard
Thank you so much for your very kind comment.

@jimmymcjimmy9160 😂😂😂 don't get me started on they shower of 💩's 🙈😂😂😂 you know it's my trigger word.😂😂😂😁👌😎

I think I need a sit down after that one, I could feel your rage as I was reading😂😂😂
You're absolutely right! You'll never see a fisherman with a big fancy house and car. That's all for the middle men.
Most fishermen struggle to pay their house running costs, never mind extras.
If only the public knew, let's hope we can change that 😁👌
Hope you had a fantastic festive period, bud.
Inshore isn't as damaging as the papers and greenpeace have you belive, remember these guys have an agenda, and the end of fishing is it.😔
The waste is only waste because them in offices ( that know better than us🙄) won't let us land it.
Too many folks with a say and no idea run the management of this type of fishery, and if they let the boats land the edible fish their wouldn't be a problem, especially if quota was dished out fairly 😁👌
It's really a big can of worms, bud.
😂😂😂
All the best.
@@onemanandhisboat bureaucracy sucks Barry
@garry9999 oh it does that!😔
it wasnt a ford it was a 4 cylinder cat fuzz told me he put the 6 cylinder cat in so he would tow the gear remembering saying he built the spitfire for the creels probably why he only had the 4 cylinder fitted to her to start with think it is a 3306 cat remember fuzz also saying he got cat to come and boost it up to 300hp there isnt many boats in the scottish fleet with that sort of power for the size and age of the boat great fun towing over the top of hard ground with the hoppers on
Well, I know this Robin.
That was before my time, I was only 1 when she was launched 🙈😂😂😂😂
All I know is that she's had a great career with a great skipper at the helm that's passed down a wealth of knowledge to the young, the way it should be.😍😁👍
All the best bud.😉👍
To them, it works great on paper, but practically, it's a disaster, just the CFP ( common fishery policy)
Yes, our seas have to be managed, but jeezo, it doesn't take a genius to work it out to fish our seas better and more sustainably 🙈🙄😁👌
God Barry, you nearly started a Barry rant there!🙈😂😂😂😂
Thank you so much for your support.
They can fish our waters unchecked, they can land in our country and not only be unchecked but untaxed as well....it's all slowly tighting the grip on killing our industry and giving to theirs 😞😡
Look at the poor Irish at the moment they are going through what we went through in the 90's, make it impossible for the boats to earn, then offer them decommissioning, then take their licenses and most importantly quota and sell it to the highest bidder, and since the EU boats have all the quota, they have plenty money, and it never goes back to the Irish boats...like you said Bureaucracy at it's finest 😞😡😡😡😡
