born in Margate in 1990 , left as a teenager to join the royal marines . my motivation for completing training was the fear of returning back to margate if i had failed . margate was dangerous at night , falling apart , and most high street shops closed down . nothing to do as kid apart from avoiding gangs . also a lot of poverty ... 14 years later im leaving the marines next month , and will be moving abroad to start a new life

The demize of the Medway towns began with the influx of foreign landlords and shop keepers , a large percentage of property in Chatham & Gillingham are late 1800 terraced houses that have been converted into bedsits and small flats owned and run by foreign landlords who along with the tenants don't give a toss what the place looks like just as long as the rent keeps coming in .

Lived in Rochester for 15 years down the road from Chatham. People who travel on buses usually don't have much money to spend otherwise they would be at Bluewater or other nearby retail parks. Council wasted money on bus station when clearing it and putting in free parking would have brought people in.

People never appear to be kind or polite anymore they are happy to see you struggle on crutches..Only people that are actually willing to offer to help are the elderly ,other disabled people and Students on day trips (People are shocked if you say “Please or thankyou and even more shocked if your kid gets up and gives a bus seat to someone “

Having once lived in Gillingham, I used to call the Medway towns the compost heap of the Garden of England, alas the Garden is no longer rosy. There isn't enough employment in the area, money is no longer invested in the town and too many people shop on line, Amazon has a lot to answer for, or maybe business rates, rentals of shops are to high. High streets are nearly all the same nowadays, whether your in the North or South, sad but true.

Canterbury is an exception to this rule. Moved here to get out of s**t hole Maidstone nearly a year ago. Town centre is still thriving.
You can tell a lot about the local economy and general shopping habits of a town by the businesses that are boarded up.
In Maidstone, M&S and most of the nicer stores on the high street are boarded up. Pubs closed down or converted to housing everywhere. High street consists mostly of betting shops, pound shops, mobile repair shops, convenience stores & barbers. Most of which are probably laundering fronts.
In Canterbury (aside from the old listed dept store, Nasons) it’s largely pound shops and the like that are closed down.
I think the constant influx of students to 4 or 5 universities is what’s keeping it nice & businesses open.

Interesting and depressing video. I was born in Chatham in 1973 and grew up in Gillingham. I left in 1988 to move to Derbyshire and still have fond memories of Medway from the 1970s to 1980s. I've been back a few times since, last of which was in 2014, and felt that I'd gone back to a place that was unknown to me. Very different from what I remember, which includes watching the original Star Wars in the cinema at the bottom of Chatham Hill, along with ET a few years later. I'm not tempted to go back anytime soon.

Raised in Margate from the age of 8. As a kid, it was a good place to grow up. Permanently tanned from the heatwave of 76 (60 now) .. all day on the beach with my brother and friends. We could swim like fishes and regularly raided the lobster pots by swimming quarter mile out and 15 ft down for our supper.
The day trippers from London in the summer. The mods, the rockers, the skinheads. Always entertaining to watch the chaos as a kid. Hundreds of people fighting along the seafront running back and forth, police everywhere and us kids sitting on the side eating fish and chips with a wooden fork watching the live entertainment. We used to swim regularly in the Lido. A sea water filled pool before it was filled in. Was sad seeing that. I remember the big oil barrel with a ladder attached to it and the ancient wooden slides. If you didn't throw a bucket of water down first, you were coming out the other end with some nasty splinters in places you really don't to want have splinters.
As an adult, there is nothing to offer workwise once Pfizer closed. Margate, Thanet, Herne bay and even Whitstable are just too far away to commute for decent wages (was a 2hr each way train ride to London. Including the walk to and from the stations, it was basically a whole day a week out of your life just commuting. There just aren't substantial employment offerings locally now.
Met a Broadstairs girl and we've now been together 30 years. Once we started having our own kids, we saw what was going on in the area and moved us out up to Maidstone. County town with links everywhere. (Big drama as she has a big family but I was proven right in the long run.) My reasoning was that there was no work in Margate for my kids to grow up into no matter how hard they studied. In Maidstone, all three of them were working and bringing in their own money before they even left school. All three of them have more money than we do now and two of them have first class degrees. They are not that tanned nor are they great swimmers.
Seaside towns are summer based. In the summer they look like a great place. In the winter they are bleak, cold and miserable. Same as any seaside town around the world.
Maybe now holidays to Greece and Spain are getting more expensive, people may start coming back to holiday in places like this but unfortunately, all the bed and breakfast hotels are now full of migrants.

I grew up in north London in the 70s and 80s and a lot of the areas were really dirty and run down but from the 90s onwards they have been completely transformed as the poor moved out and the wealthy moved in. Those suburbs are very attractive areas to live now. I always wondered were all the low income people went and I guess it was to these hideous satellite towns dotted around outside of London. Out of sight, out of mind.

Agreed, It makes me laugh when people say London is bad now. It's far better now than the dump it was in the 70's & 80's. As you pointed out most of the residents moved out to the suburbs which have equally turned on their heads and have almost become the inner London of the 70"s & ,80"s

    • @jaijai5250
      @jaijai5250 4 місяці тому +1

You’re correct. Most of London has been “socially cleansed”. I don’t use that word lightly, as it’s a deliberate, strategic act on behalf of the authorities.
The only place still affordable in south London is Croydon, and a three bedroom house starts around £550,000 (if you’re lucky). A lot of the other boroughs moved their social housing residents to Croydon, as there’s a lot of private rentals and HMO’s.
I suspect they’ll eventually “cleanse” Croydon at some stage. In some ways it’s a good idea, as I don’t want to see houses that aren’t maintained, weeds and overgrown hedges and refuse that isn’t sorted into bins correctly etc. These are the things that make residential areas look shabby and dirty.
The legislative changes to private renting could make it less lucrative for private landlords. Hopefully they’ll sell the houses they hoard, prices will drop, and normal working people may be able to afford their own home. I say this as an owner occupier whose house will fall in price if this happens, but housing is a basic human need.

The funny thing about Gravesend is that it is often very busy. There are lots of festivals, parades, and art exhibitions. There are also many escape rooms and other game shops. The market has been completely revamped and is an amazing night spot. It's maybe not the best tourist town though. You have to know what you are looking for.

Just a few things about my hometown, Gravesend. Those are flats being built opposite the statue of the Queen. Every time they start building again, the company goes bust! The building in GTA 5 might get built before these flats do. The ferry is now no longer running, as thurrock and gravesham council did not want to continue to contribute to its service. Hi Matt! We haven't visited any of these towns - now we know why! It was sad to see that parts of Margate were very neglected and run down. I imagine it was quite posh, way back in the day. Eww, the seaweed stench must be very offputting. Gravesend looked like it was living up to its name. The graffiti in the Heritage Centre was cool. I didn't know that Pocahontas ended up at Gravesend. The Sikh temple was impressive. I was surprised that Dover looked so shabby in places. It looked better in summer. Oh dear, the town of Chatham looked rather depressing. Everything was kicking off with all the speeding police cars. Poor old Gillingham didn't have much to recommend it. One thing that all these places had in common was that there was litter everywhere. Such a shame. It was great that you also highlighted some good things about each place, although you struggled with Gillingham. Interesting vlog 👍😊

Maidstone didn't quite get killed off by Bluewater at the turn of the century the way all the Medway towns did but it has been dying a very slow death ever since. The Medway towns were nothing special before, but since the rise of online shopping, the high street (pretty much anywhere in the U.K.) is basically a relic of a time gone by for any town that has no other reason for people to be there like natural beauty of historical interest. Anywhere touristy like Canterbury and Broadstairs will be fine, but even they have their share of crappy phone accessory shops and Poundland-esque type stores.

In Gillingham, in 1980s, it was the fact houses were cheap and London only 50 minutes by train. So for a young person getting London wages but able to easily get a mortgage for first home.It was a place of hope then. Im sad to see it now. The buildings along the way to the Dockyard, boarded up, were Army Garrison buildings. Beautiful inside. Awful that they are left boarded up and their architecture hidden. I suspect that the Government, Army, Admiralty etc own all those buildings and others beyond that you didn’t show. They won’t sell them on and when dont need, they just board up. Its very sad to see the heritage dismissed in such a way.

I hope Medway gets sorted soon because there is tons of potential, the infrastructure is already there, Rochester is lovely and there's tons of nice nature all around. I didn't know that about the buildings being owned by government/military etc what a waste!

I've lived in Gravesend for more than 40 years on and off. It used to be a rough diamond with great pubs and salt of the earth people. Really funny people. Over the last 10 years it's gone completely to shit. For the last 50 years Gravesend has lived in TOTAL harmony with the Sikh population which has steadily grown. I have several, life long, Sikh friends. I now feel like a foreigner in my home town.

I lived in Chatham for nearly 30 years and as bad as it was, Gillingham always felt worse. A few years back I had to use the train to visit my Father in hospital, on leaving the newly refurbished station I was greeted by the sight of a burberry-clad junkie shooting up - he promptly left his syringe behind. People didn't even bat an eyelid, that tells you all you need to know about Gillingham. At least Chatham has Billy The Quid lmao.

I grew up in south east London but have now lived in 2 of these towns 😂 I lived in Gravesend and currently live in Gillingham BUT I’ve got a really nice flat by the stadium in a converted bakery, brand new inside, massive windows, double height ceilings and I rarely go to the high st. Before I moved here I thought Chatham was horrible but Chatham has got some nice parts, pier 5, st Mary’s island, copper rivet, Brompton is ok army town and couple nice pubs. Gravesend has so much potential, there’s really nice old buildings that could look good, river Thames location (3 daws is nice in summer) food market etc some nice houses too, I used to get the ferry to tilbury as I was working on steel works at the docks. Also remember when I lived in London growing up getting the train ticket from Bromley south to Margate which included entry to Benbon brothers /dreamland 😊 and to be fair they have good events there in summer now, chase and status, shy fx, Pete tong, etc

I like the comment spoken @ 15:36 ... I was 8 years old when I lived in Margate back in 1956 as my father couldn't find a decent job there, we moved to Chatham in 1960, probably a bad move but at least there was plenty of work there, and as a kid didn't know any better, we eventually moved to Gillingham in 1962 started work at 15 as a Shipwright apprentice at the Chatham Dockyard, bought my first house in Nile Rd Gillingham in 1973 after a complete renovation moved to Gravesend Rd in Strood,
But as this guy said looking back it's so depressing on how Medway especially Chatham and Gillingham has declined over the years, but I have to say it's good to see that Rochester is gradually being revitalised especially with the newly built train station and the new apartment blocks close by, then we have the Castle and Cathedral which draws in visitors from everywhere.

Yeah Margate has a good amount of decent street art. Seaweed stinks everywhere, unpleasant stuff! You are definitely catching it at the right time of day to make it look deserted! 👍 Soviet Council Building in Gravesend! Again really decent street artists down there. They love there multi storey car parks down there don’t they? Is there much call for them? I wouldn’t have thought so. At least the kids know how to have fun! Lovely looking temple and clock tower. After seeing Dover you would just head home, what a shocking intro to the UK. Dovers town centre is really depressing. Crazy how long shops have stood empty in Chatham. Love how the bushes are decorated with empty cans, is that art nouveau? Great police footage! Ah poor Gillingham, did you know going in the order or did you decide after visiting them all? You’ve convinced me, it’s more grim down South! A cracking instalment. 👍

As a general rule, anything along the north and east coasts of Kent from the Thames around to Folkestone is not great or awful, and anything further inland really is the nice posh 'Garden of England'.
If it seems a bit like parts of the North suffering from post-industrial decline... that's because it is. Kent's coastal towns, especially along the north Kent coast, were very industrial; lots of heavy industry like steelworks and brickworks, shipbuilding, coal mining, paper making and so on. Most of that is gone, other than the DS Smith paper mill at Kemsley.
