Terrific Professor Tim! I learned so much from your videos. You bring it back to life. Thanks again for your hard work. Will be waiting for your next one.
Hey Tim, I'm a Southern California born and raised 65 year old guy who just loves the 60's 70's and some 80"s rock music. I really appreciate the work you produce. Just want to say thank you and God bless.❤
Thank you Tim, your content is so awesome. I learn about so many of my favorite musicians and celebs lives by watching your channel. Always makes my day when I get your notifications.
Very informative as always love your videos. So weird driving in The Santa Cruz mountains with the top down and talking with my wife about my wana be rock star days in LA. I mentioned to her it has been a while since you posted a new video. When we got home there it was a notification from your channel. Nice! Keep up the great work!!! 🎸😎
Thanks, I love it! Been taking a little time off to take care of some of my "senior" aches and pains so its been a few weeks but I'm back at it. Love your area, I'm a Banana Slug at heart!
Another informative and entertaining report, Tim although of course, the subject is grim. Sad to think of how many living legends we'll likely lose over the next few years with so many approaching or surpassing the eighty year mark. At least they survived rock and roll to reach such a milestone.
Very interesting Tim. This was definitely different than your usual videos of rock star docs. But quite interesting. I wasn't aware that Gram Parsons died from heroin. It's sad that so many of the great rock stars tried the mess and got hooked and lost their lives to the stuff, or another complication from it. Anyway my friend I am always glad to see a video from Rock Essentials With Tim pop up on my notifications. Rock on bro.
I didn’t know about Bobby Fuller! Another interesting, informative & engagingly presented video Tim. Always made up when I get a notification you’ve posted. 😊
Thanks, Adrian. "I Fought the Law" is one of those songs that has been covered effectively 3 times that I can think of. Bobby Fuller's version, Tom Petty's version and then my favorite, The Clash's version. Cheers!
Loved the video as always. But as you well know, you only scratched the surface of music’s most tragic & mysterious deaths. Especially in L.A.& Hollywood.
Another fascinating video, Tim. Great work. If I may add one little note on James Dean's story, the driver of that Ford woody wagon (parked behind the Porsche at the gas station) was driven by Bill Hickman, a friend of Dean's, AND the stunt driver of the '68 Charger in Bullitt !
I had heard that but wasn't sure if it was true, so thanks. BTW: I heard that gas station was on Ventura and Beverly Glen just up the street and I think it might still be there. I should check that out.
@@RockessentialTim Cool! Keep us posted.... That segment with Joshua Tree reminded me of the Eagles being out there, stoned on Peyote, and that's where they came up with the band name. Love yor channel!
Another GREAT backstory, Tim. Well done. All tragic, to be sure, but personally, I find Marvin Gaye's life and death moreso. I beleieve he was a genius....at least musically. BTW, what is that open theme music? Very cool.
I'm originally from Detroit and I'm a HUGE Marvin fan. I even visited his old digs there on Outer Dr a couple years ago. They were all greats at Motown but no one else had his great vocal timing in my opinion. I write and produce all the music for the vids and that tune actually came from a Jim Morrison vid I did a couple years back. Glad you liked it!
Great work again Tim, more addresses to drive-by on my next visit, going back to the U.K. in a few days, i did a tour thanks to you, I got invited into the Lido, told to go away at Mama Cass old house(7708), I saw the Desperado/Cole crest house has been flipped (shame), the gates of Glenn Campbell estate, Joni’s place (8217), an early Zappa house (8404) - but couldn’t find any clues of his grave at the cemetery, and many more, thank you, your a very good man, I had a ball, Ken.
That is so cool! I think one of my fave places in the entire city is right there off of Cole Crest on Magnolia where Chris Hillman used to live. I could just sit there looking out for hours. Glad you had a good time. Cheers!
Hey Tim! 69 yr old Idaho resident here. As I DO NOT want notifications 'ON', when I luck out and get one I really appreciate it and am compelked to say 'Thanks'!
Hi Tim … Troy from Australia here again . 😊 I know I keep saying it but I’m really loving your vids . This one is also great . Can’t wait for more . As an anxiety sufferer I have to say that watching your excellent music history/classic rock vids really really help me out when I really need it ! Thank you so much . Plz keep them coming 🙌🏻🙌🏻 . I’d love to see more in Tom petty , Fleetwood Mac , and would love to see some Aerosmith and Joe Walsh !! Thanks again . 👍🏻
Thanks, that is so great to hear! I have a couple things in the works as we speak and I'll be finishing them in the next couple of months so stay tuned.
Thanks for the video. I think that the death of Mal Evans was the most horrific. Nowadays we call it suicide by cop. Effectively it was murder by cop. That three cops couldn’t tell he had an air rifle is unbelievable.
Great job as always. As the Who sang..."Long Live Rock, be it dead or alive." I always thought of that line as the musicians as much as the music. My immediate thoughts... The Germs singer lived in a well to do neighborhood. To a working class boy like me, its always surprising how somebody with a chance in life would throw it away; my mind understands, my soul and body do not. Folks, keep on going. Pretty soon the dice will fall in your favor. Parsons...I have stayed in those types of Southwestern motels plenty in my life. I could almost smell the varnish on the wood and feel the heat in the air as it cools in the evening. Crazy how visceral some experiences can be. I felt the same thing in the final scenes of "Brokeback Mountain" (the trailer house where the last living main character ended up). A lifetime ago. Fuller....sounds an awful lot like he pissed off a jealous boyfriend. Dean...interesting to see the actual spot and how he still resonates with people enough they make the trek out there. Before it was a black and white photo of a wreck. Now it is alive in color, a place I've actually passed by a time or two, I'm sure.
Nice one, Tim. I think Mal Evans should've been considered the "fifth Beatle", as he was there for their entire career, driving the van to gigs, setting up their gear, protecting them, even fetching tea (and probably other assorted goodies LOL). A sad end to his life, and I'm sure he had a million stories to tell about his days with the Beatles. Also, I think Gram Parsons could have been a HUGE star if he had not left us so early....
I thoroughly enjoy your videos, Tim. They are the perfect length, provide a wealth of interesting facts and trivia, and the way you tell the stories is very entertaining! I have a video suggestion--> a tour of the major and key recording studios highlighting four or five critical albums recorded at each one in and around LA. What do you think?
Thanks much and its a good idea. I would have to pick and choose though because about 50 percent of the studios are gone and about 50 percent of the ones that are still here won't let me anywhere near them. I think its so weird that they wouldn't want to celebrate their history but thats just me sayin.
Thanks much. I always thought Wichita was kind of a rockin' place though. I think a lot of bands played there cuz it was halfway to where they were going.
It still feels like such a crime, along with a tragic loss, that SO much talent dies early. It has always seemed so pointless. I guess I will never understand nor accept the big picture and its message, if there ever was one or will be. And that's my reaction to your video, Tim. Thanks for sharing the facts.
Thanks and you bring up an interesting point: What is the message? I think the message is Rock & Roll is a mean, hard game and if you're gonna play it you better have your shit together.... or sumpin like that!
I live in Yucca Valley and have been to the restaurant/bar where Gram Parsons spent his last night drinking, along with the Joshua Tree Inn and the place where he was partially cremated. It's a story that I have long been fascinated with. Phil went above and beyond to prove himself a loyal friend.

I got to hang out with him for a couple hours in the late 70's, driving him around LA. I wish I could remember more about it but I can say that about pretty much everything from back then. Thanks for the cool comment!!
According to stuntman/actor Bill Hickman, James Dean didn't die instantly, but actually lived for about 5 minutes after the crash. Hickman was following Dean in a stationwagon towing the racecar trailer, just a couple of minutes behind. He approached the crash site, pulled Dean out of the wreck, and then Dean died in Hickman's arms. Hickman was deeply affected by this for the remainder of his life. Hickman was the the actor/stuntdriver in the famous Mustang vs. Charger chase scene through San Francisco in the Steve McQueen film 'Bullitt' (1968).
Thanks for another great one, Tim. In a future episode, please let us know how to pronounce your last name. As usual, your video sent me down an internet rabbit hole. You talk about Darby Crash --> I watch a few Germs videos --> I wonder about Pat Smear's ethnicity --> Wikipedia --> Pat Smear interviews --> he talks about being a fan of the Siouxsie and the Banshees guitarist --> WHY AM I LOOKING AT THE WIKIPEDIA PAGE OF JOHN MCKAY AT 2:00 A.M.??!!
It wouldn't be the true UA-cam experience without a couple Rabbit holes, right? I got to see the Germs several times and they were even in today's realm, outrageous. Hi Tim. The Marvin Gaye episode of Midnight Special just dropped today! It features a concert from Atlanta Stadium, Sep. ‘74 and interviews with him and his parents! I thought of you and this video that I watched - with the Marvin clip. Wanted to let u know brother! Stay well my friend.
Thank you Tim. I also watched your Detroit tour with your buddy there. What a crying shame on those dilapidated theaters! Imagine the magical music memories from days past that went on in those places?? God what shame that benefactor figure couldn’t/wouldn’t do something to restore those venues.
@@luvbasses5487 My hometown. Unfortunately that's what happens to a theater when no one wants to go there any more. I was actually back there filming something for an upcoming video just a couple weeks ago. I will say that the downtown area has made a pretty remarkable resurgence.
Hey Tim Jonathan from Santa Cruz, always 13:33 enjoying your videos. Pass by that James Dean intersection a bunch of times on my way from the Central Coast to So Cal. Always wanted to stop and pay my respects, but a tad too dangerous of an area to exit my car.
I stopped there kind of on a lark a couple years ago on my way to hike Pinnacles and it was like 27 degrees out! Someone in the comments here told me that the exact place is right under where the James Dean Memorial Interchange sign is.
I have never heard of some of these people/bands. That's what made this video interesting. It wasn't just a rehash of already known deaths. And, it looks like James Dean's accident was avoidable on that flat, straight sparse traffic road....and that there's still a roadside memorial. For 70 years??!! That can't be!!
There's a cafe not far from there and they told me that on the anniversary, September 30th, it used to be crowded with visitors but over the past 20 years its dwindled down to almost nothing.
@@RockessentialTim I'm not surprised the crowd has dwindled. Thanks for answering. It's not bad for an anniversary memorial so many years after the accident.
I want Roy Buchanan back. We need him. And the most inexplicable seem to be the guitarists. Duane. Gary Moore. SFV. Beck. Jimi. Kath. Unless you count drummers, who spontaneously whatever. Ask Spinal Tap.
@@RockessentialTim If you surf the platform there are MANY Roy treasures, some obscure. Not just rock docs and tear-evoking playing, but if you can find this one, extended footage of him being handed and breaking in a new guitar - trust me on that one. Or if you need to cry, check out his Misty!
I pass that James Dean memorial every time I drive to LA from where I live near Monterey, it’s a sort of mile marker, a benchmark of how long into the drive we are…
It is certainly in the middle of nowhere as it were. I actually stopped and filmed it that day on a lark, was on my way to hike at Pinnacles which was beyond amazing!
Seriously! Tim I mean seriously how the heck are you even still alive ? To get to the death site where James Dean died, you have to cross the world's most dangerous junction. This place is so remote I wondered where all these speedracer rejects are coming from! And you did your story there with a smile..lol. Keep it going brother Tim...forget me
You forgot Spinal Tap's drummer who mysteriously choked on someone else's vomit... lest we forget 😕
OMG why didn't I think of that!!! RIP Mick Shrimpton.

If you are a drummer, Spinal Tap is not a safe band to join.🧐

@@luvbasses5487 My hometown. Unfortunately that's what happens to a theater when no one wants to go there any more. I was actually back there filming something for an upcoming video just a couple weeks ago. I will say that the downtown area has made a pretty remarkable resurgence.
Thanks Tim. I subscribed months ago and very much enjoy your content. Keep it coming brother and stay well my friend.
@@luvbasses5487 Thanks, you too!
John Belushi - Blues Brothers - Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles in March 1982
Legendary
My first concert ever was Roy Buchanan opening for the MC5. How's that for an odd bill?
@@RockessentialTim If you surf the platform there are MANY Roy treasures, some obscure. Not just rock docs and tear-evoking playing, but if you can find this one, extended footage of him being handed and breaking in a new guitar - trust me on that one. Or if you need to cry, check out his Misty!
YOU'RE A COOL GUY TIM...........................
Would you mind telling that to my kids?
I'm not the only soul's accused of hit & run. Tire tracks all across your back, I can see you've had your fun. 😎
Hi Tim. Yes, Jimi's B-day!
RIght on!!
Poor Mal, and all the others mentioned here 🙁
I pass that James Dean memorial every time I drive to LA from where I live near Monterey, it’s a sort of mile marker, a benchmark of how long into the drive we are…
It is certainly in the middle of nowhere as it were. I actually stopped and filmed it that day on a lark, was on my way to hike at Pinnacles which was beyond amazing!
@ nice! I love Pinnacles NP. I teach geology classes at SJSU and take my students there on field trips. So much cool stuff in California!
What's the tune at 5:55
All the music is written and produced in my studio for the vids so it doesn't really have a name.
Seriously! Tim I mean seriously how the heck are you even still alive ? To get to the death site where James Dean died, you have to cross the world's most dangerous junction. This place is so remote I wondered where all these speedracer rejects are coming from! And you did your story there with a smile..lol. Keep it going brother Tim...forget me
Its a dirty job but someone's gotta do it!
I always thought Joplin royally f if you no what I mean of course I was 9 yrs old then
