Before Gram Parsons’ death, he attended of another friend with his road manager, Phil Kaufman. There was no music, it was somber, and Parsons hated it. So Parsons and Kaufman made a pact, if anything happened to him, Kaufman was to take his body to Joshua Tree, “have a few beers and send me (Parsons) into the atmosphere.” So Phil Kaufman took matters into his own hands and the coffin was stolen from Los Angeles International Airport and he burned it in Joshua Tree just like Parsons had requested. There was only one problem, Parsons’ family had planned a New Orleans burial even though Parsons never lived in Louisiana, in order to try and get their hands on a major inheritance. To the young people reading this, there is nothing glamorous about substance abuse. The tragic ending of Gram's life proves this.

There are people who are partially responsible for what happened to Gram, especially Keith Richards, Kaufman.
You has no evidence to back that claim. He was drugged out when he was with the birds. Keith and Gram didn't hook up till the later.
Gram was actually pretty focused and sober when he was with the Byrds, which is when he met Keith Richards, and still quite focused for the first while with the FBB. He fell into increasing drug use, some of it with Keith, after that. I'm pretty sure he suffered from mood swings and depression caused by the loss of both his parents, which IMO was really the cause of his early death. I was at first angry with Kaufman, but with more reading I think he loved Gram and tried hard to keep him alive. Emmylou Harris hired Phil as her road manager, and she loved Gram. @@thomasmcdaniel765

There was nothing cool or heroic or brave or respectful about what that drunken idiot road manager did with the body. It was a repulsive, sickening act by someone who should’ve been demonized not immortalized.
It was what Gram had asked him to do.

If Emmylou Harris believes Phil, so do I. According to Phil's girlfriend he was very upset at Gram's death and forced himself to do what Gram had told him he wanted. No need to be rude in discussions. @@SusanMarks-mm3mr

Mystery? Maybe if you're younger than when music was actually created, written and played by actual human beings with creativity and talent, without the assistance from computer generated bullshit. The rest of us heard about this awesome act of friendship and dedication to a best friend's last wishes years ago. It doesn't get any cooler than this for sure! 👍✊👏👏👏
Admittedly, I'm 54 now. But I hadn't heard of Gram until December 2023. It was Emmylou who brought him to my attention. But she's been really hurt by previous relationships. I think so much of the internet is built on the chicanery of fraudulent transactions. If I had the money I would go down to the southern United States to meet her. She has the natural beauty of an exceptionally kind woman.
You do know young people still play in bands too right? Just say you're too old to figure out your electronics to find new music. King Gizzard and the Lizard wizard, Screaming Females, itchy kitty, prism bitch, PUP, Joose, and Turnstile. All great rock bands that have come out over the last 20 years. Where were you? Listening to the same 20 dog shit boomer bands?

Gram was an outlaw who had already lost many of the people he loved. He set off fireworks in a Holiday Inn parking lot while on tour, so I think it's quite possible he would have done the deed for Phil.
@@margaretross9150 I'm not sure about that Margaret, it's a big jump from letting off fireworks (which is tame compared to what he actually fid) to grabbing and getting rid of a body. I know the grievous angel was always gonna his own thing..but I think enough people around him would've stopped him...but then again it's all speculation...we just don't know. I've said lots of silky things to my friends while high but never went through with them (we all did) is it weird I respect Phil for keeping his part of the pact though? Imo that's a friend. Like Johnny Depp did with the good doctor Hunter S Thompsom...the story in itself is crazy. To go against the family? Great Job Phil.
@@brazenlilhussy5975 Hi. I should have been clearer. Phil was once asked whether Gram would have actually done it for him. He said he wouldn't have done it himself but would have made sure it was done. Kind of typical of a wealthy boy who was used to having servants. Phil always did his best for Gram.
