I also really enjoyed your analysis here - I've never actually thought about how Luffy's sandals and straw hat contrast him to the formality of the marines, or how his sleeves enhance the way his stretching looks.
I’ve never noticed just how much of genius piece of design work Luffy’s hat is. It visually signifies him (It is his trademark and his epithet) but it also give him the illusion of simian ears when displayed in profile, completing the ‘monkey’ look. However, the most genius trick it pulls is in how the red band and the top of the hat itself mimics a sun rising over a horizon line. Absolutely brilliant stuff.

Personally, I think my gavourote part of luffy's design is his big round smile. It's very round and friendly, but also, suitably unhinged in how big it is. Kinds communicates is whole personality and directs the whole feel of the story when luffy is present based on if the smile is there.

For me Nightmare Luffy was sort of a gear 4 beta. Especially his size, hair, eye design and emphasis on power got reused a lot on the gear 4 design. Kinda bummed that he didnt get his little highlight in your otherwise very well made video :/

I don’t know if it’s the white color scheme, the divine aspect of the clouds around his shoulders or the silhouet against the moon, but whatever it is it’s my favourite Luffy design and I can’t wait to get to that part of the story.

about haki visuals making things homogenous: the anime does add a different color tint to people's haki, if you pay attention to it almost everytime we see new characters using haki or two different characters using it at the same time, its almost never the exact same shade. its like each armament coating is unique to the user
I heard somewhere that south american pirates wore strawhats. But I would say that luffy's design represents his journey to become a true pirate. His initial design makes him look like a farmer - the furthest thing from a pirate, but gradually becomes more piratey

Gear 5 fixed One Piece for me, while luffy turning into a more serious character due to him facing the strongest people in the world makes sense I missed so much seeing him just goof around in fights, truly the warrior that makes people laugh

By showing how much happiness freedom gives, by making the most carefree unfavorable happy person as the protagonist, against nothing but rules and regulations. Regulations. An underrated piece of design its the scar As someone that started with the manga, that first scene of him stabbing his face tells a lot about the character Whenever he says hes gonna do something crazy i see that scar and reminded of that first scene Hes doesn't think or care if he gets hurt and that mark is a sign of that The anime really ruined that aspect by cutting that scene
Gear 4’s definetly my favourite form, especially because you can see where Luffy took inspiration for those forms. *Bounceman: Definetly took inspiration from Enel when he went all Sumo Lightning Mode.* *Snakeman: Took inspiration from his battle with the Boa Sisters Marigold and Sandersonia. All the Snake themed attacks, the fact it’s based around countering observation Haki, etc.* As for Tank Man, I feel like many others he made the form up on the spot.
While super sayian is definitely more iconic overall (and obviously more powerful), Luffy's gears are way more interesting, because they are meaningfully different. Each gear looks unique, and serves a specific purpose, whereas the different levels of super sayian are just like the one that preceded it, except stronger and with bigger hair.

It's the perfect clash between the overly detailed characters and backgrounds of Onigashima and Egghead
It also perfectly mirrors what Gear 5 is physically being based on old cartoons and rubber-hose animation
I've been saying that nobody else in the series but nika's silhouette have ever had that feature, there's always at least a bit of sharpness there
Reminds of my initial theory of Luffy becoming a literal rubber hose style cartoon character for his ultimate form.
