We used to leave our Ford Mondeo for 2 weeks when we went on our holidays and asked the guy who looked after the cars to disconnect and reconnect the batteries when we was away. It worked
Love the silver hat. Abandoned for two weeks. Better chance of starting than DNR503K, now about12 years sitting in the garage. Just as an aside I saw an ad for a certain rust preventive treatment. For the last month the algorithm has bombarded me with ads for that product such that, now WOULD NOT BUY it if it was the last product on earth. Me, bolshy sod or what?
My Dad had an N reg yellow Viva. He drove it home from the pub one night, and in the morning it was a white Viva. He just drove it back to the pub and parked it up next to his and drove to work in the morning. Sodium street lights+ Guinness= wrong car.
Brings back memories of my first car. A 1978 Viva HC. The fact that you have a whine on the clutch and that squeal when you engage it sounds a lot like a failing thrust bearing which is the cuff on the input shaft that presses against the pressure plate and depresses the splines releasing pressure on the friction plate. The whine and that squeal is the noise of the rollers in the bearing race that comes into contact with the splines on the pressure plate as they shift in their cage. The good news is that it's dead easy to swap out. Put the car in the air, undo the gearstick inside the car. Take out the driveshaft. Put a jack under the gearbox on the cross-brace. Undo the bolts that attach the gearbox to the block and then the four bolts that fix the cross brace to the chassis then slide back and lower the gearbox. Unhook the fork arm that your clutch cable is attached to and slide it inwards to disengage it's lugs from the bearing's collar and the thrust bearing slides off the input shaft into your hand. If I remember correctly it shouldn't take more than an hour to do with worst bit being getting to the bolts at the top of the bell housing up against the bulkhead so it might be worth undoing those two from above while the car is still on the ground. It takes a bit of wiggling to get the gearbox free because it is sat on location pins but you don't need to realign the clutch when putting it back together if you don't disturb the clutch plate and pressure plate when it is disassembled. Reassembly is therefore pretty much the reverse of removal.
I’d happily use that Viva as a daily driver. You’d keep it running with fifty or sixty quids worth of tools from Lidl. (If they did imperial) And setting a fifteen thou points gap and 25 plug gap by eye. Sheer bliss!
Your Elephantitus is the Thrust race/clutch release bearing Stevie, just got back from BMC day at Gaydon with the SD1. Hope you feel better soon son TC.
Been tinkering over the garage and then rain stopped play so came in for a sarnie and a cuppa and got a notification there was a new video. Best lunch break ever lol
Bloody good to see you again Steve mate. Please don't ever concern yourself about missing a video or two - remember i said to you before that you don't owe anyone OR the internet anything at all and your first responsibility is yourself and your family. People will always support you with your projectand your channel because you're a humble and down-to-earth bloke, and they will do it willingly and freely, not expecting anything in return. The others can f*ck off! 😂 Glad to see the Viva is still firing up nicely - the sound of that engine is akin to clockwork... beautiful sounding for a car that's almost as old as i am! Keep up the great work and fantastic videos...all of which are a treat when they pop up in my notifications...and i look forward to seeing the next video, WHENEVER that will be. Look after yourself mate 👍
Great to see you getting out and about in the Viva even if its just round the block 😎 feel your pain with the snacks..... chocolate digestives or any biscuits are my failings..... ok if you have 2 or 3.... not 10+ with a cuppa 😂
Your doing well mate making videos and keeping working hard for the family. Don't worry if you miss a week or two WE will all be here waiting for you and your update, well done mate.
Sean harding Must be said, the styling of a HC has aged well. The slimline tail lights and bumper look cool now, no longer just a "Dad" car. Those engines can be surprisingly lively when set up right. We'd probably prefer you back on the bars, it would make us feel a bit better about chewing our own. 😊
Cheers for the upload as always Steve, hope your doing ok away from here mate. You've got a lot of mates on here now who understand it's hard to work a proper job and fit in the UA-cam stuff for nowt but giggles. Everything crossed for you that the channel blows up. (I said that to Derek back when he had 12k subs and look at him now)
Ah thank you mate, appreciate it, that would be amazing, I've got plans for investing more time and vehicles into the channel once I get moved to a new house 👍
Effing banana???😊Good to see ya back Steveo Hope whatever your thing is you fix it👍 The Viva is behaving anyway Your Viva is gonna be like Triggers broom
Resist the call of the chocolate, I’m trying to do the same as an addict of choc digestives - it’s hard. Anyway that carb seems to have made a real difference, I’m sure you’ll sort the clutch, be well remember the car and YT vids are supposed to be enjoyable not making you more stressed.
Steve, I think base plate has gone on your dizzy the way the points keep closing, you could try a self tapper and washer or use one of other dizzy. I don't think they are much to buy new. If your oil pump dizzy is central pick up and not the early off set type. You could put a Bosch dizzy on, which is on later chevette and are better. But you dizzy pick up has to be central. Hope this makes sense. Cheers mate.
😂 richer than BG I feel a plandemic 👍 the Truth my friend! Keep it up, you’re doing well! I’m in the middle of rebuilding Mikuni 40 PHH dual Carburetors and have no idea what I’m doing BUT I’m labeling everything!! The got the Mikuni manual so hopefully later I’ll remember how it goes back together. Maybe I should make a vid of it 🤔
Getting better in small steps every time. BTW my fuel filter is vertical on my car (1969 Rover V8) and it works just fine. It doesn’t fill right up. I put in electric fuel pump and electric ignition and it made a big difference. Electric ignition is just a swap over module for the points. Also installed inertia cut off switch for the electric fuel pump - easy job. Gunson colourtune is a great device for checking mixture.
Thanks mate, I've got an electronic ignition kit, that I may give a go again once she's on the road, couldn't seem to get the viva to run right last time i tried it, I'll probably be checking fuel mixture in next vid 👍
No need to be embarrassed Steve and your amongst friends here , nothing shameful in wanting to lose a few pounds to fit into your “ Mankini” this summer 😉. Is always good just for the car to start let alone drive and run 👍🏻 and yes saying “ Rougher than a kipper “ says it all😁.
That car should run like new, maybe better after a long run, the only way of getting more power is a Kent high lift camshaft and maybe get the crank balanced. Great video missed last week one, take care mate, keep on moving and a grooving
Great to see you back Steve, that’s my Sunday complete ready for my night shift later. I think we’re all a bit fuscular if I’m honest ..think I’m gonna start using that word a lot more😂 Great vid as always mate , looking forward to the next as always❤👍🏻…love the tin hat btw 😃
Steve, great to see you back again. The circuit you do to test the Viva is becoming familiar. I'm not allowed to drive at the moment for health reasons. Your trips are so enjoyable. Roll on November, can't wait to drive again. The Viva sounded really great, so smooth.
Glad to see you back, hope all is well. The banana worries me, but maybe I am reading too much into it. Do whatever you need to if its health related, your kids need ya! Us too, but they come first, eh? 😂
nothing to do with the cable, also Steve, to add, back in the good old days I had viva, magnum and chevettes and they have been known for release bearing to chew through pressure plate splines, I had one do that that was ceased. So I'd advise to get yourself psyched up for a new clutch and bearing then you'll solve that noise.
I noticed that the hose from the combined oil filler / crankcase filter doesn't seem to be connected to anything? This ,combined with the fact that no airbox is fitted can mess up the idle mixture ( depending on the breather setup on that particular vehicle).
You got to go flea market. Get you some feeler gauges. 50 pence. 😂😂😂😂. A pound on a bad day. Put another filter in after pump. Don't matter what way the filters laying. It feeds from the middle. My glass filter on my old Mercedes stands up rite. Lot of sugar in bananas. You can read about it. The clutch. I think I would bite the bullet and pull the trans and put a new clutch package. Then the jobs done. Could be release bearing not returning. Rust on shaft..but check the pin holding the pedal it not worn out and working correctly. Good time to do in the summer. It's a moving part that wears on cars. Easy to change. Get car blocked up high all around. And stay safe. Then you can check underneath and underseal bad spots if needed. Good luck.
"richer than Bill Gates after a pandemic" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 alright mate! Where they new points? New ones would bed in to the distributor lobes after a while and close the gap, could of been that 🤔 keep yourself right mate, youtube takes over, it's hard to do everything with a full time job and a family 👍
We used to leave our Ford Mondeo for 2 weeks when we went on our holidays and asked the guy who looked after the cars to disconnect and reconnect the batteries when we was away. It worked
😃👍
Theres no mstaking the noise of that engine.Takes me back to when my dad had Vivas.x
😃👍
“Rougher than a badger’s ar*e” is what you’re looking for.
She’s coming on well. I just noticed how fresh the upholstery looked.
😆, yeah the interior is in great nick for the age 👍

😆I've seen that stiff mate, was thinking about giving it a try 😄
Yeah online buying involves delivery costs, not unusual for companies to sell direct nowadays cheaper though rather than through eBay or Amazon
Nice one! Doin better than I could!. 🙂 Good to see you back!. Cheers Maddog Melbourne Aus!.
Thank you mate, appreciate it 👍
Love the video, a little bit of weight loss will probably help your back as you get older, I learnt the hard way.
Thank you mate, that's what I'm starting to think about, longevity!👍
D'you know, if you blindfolded me I'd know that was a Viva you were driving - such a distinctive-sounding engine. Well done, Sir!
😃 thank you mate 👍

I've had the gearbox off before mate, it's a new clutch kit in the viva 👍
‘Where the bloody hell ‘av yoo been? What time d’ya call this?!! ‘ 🤣
😆👍
Hi Steve I thought maybe you weren't very well again Sunday's aren't the same without your videos I hope you are feeling better soon cheers dave

Nice to see it driving mate👍
Thank you mate 👍
Hello,it's alive!!!,nice to see the Viva running again, steady progress will get it sorted.
Hello mate! Thanks 👍
The viva is coming on great, hope your doing well, best wishes from the BGT, Sector 5, Bucuresti.
Thank you mate, appreciate it 👍
Your Elephantitus is the Thrust race/clutch release bearing Stevie, just got back from BMC day at Gaydon with the SD1. Hope you feel better soon son TC.
Ah well looks like I'll be changing that in a future vid then😄ah class hope you had good time there mate, thank you 👍
Been tinkering over the garage and then rain stopped play so came in for a sarnie and a cuppa and got a notification there was a new video. Best lunch break ever lol
Thank you mate, appreciate it 👍
From down south it’s rough as a bears arse👍🏻😆😆😆, started ok in end .. top work👍🏻
Don't think I've heard that one before, I'm going to use it now tho😆 thanks mate 👍

😆 thank you mate, appreciate it 👍
your clutch release bearing is the noise you can hear
That is probably the sweetest sounding four cylinder Vauxhall engine I have ever heard..
Thank you mate, yeah she's sounding like a little animal 😄👍
That sounds pretty much fixed. Just your clutch to sort out and that will be that. Don't touch anything after that! 😂
😆 she's getting there mate, running like a beast now 👍
Great to see you getting out and about in the Viva even if its just round the block 😎 feel your pain with the snacks..... chocolate digestives or any biscuits are my failings..... ok if you have 2 or 3.... not 10+ with a cuppa 😂
😆Thank you mate, night shifts and lots of sugary snacks, not good for the health, I need to learn moderation 😆👍
In Mansfield we say as rough as a badgers arse 😂
There ya go, maybe I just made up the rough as a kipper then 😆
Your doing well mate making videos and keeping working hard for the family. Don't worry if you miss a week or two WE will all be here waiting for you and your update, well done mate.
Thank you mate 👍
More Viva capers!
👍
Welcome back sir. Grand as ever. Watched from a beach in Portugal in the sun under the parasol! 🏖️🤟
Thank you mate, nice! 👍
Nice pick up there in the little test drive. It's becoming a proper car. Looks the business too even with a bit of rust.
Thank you mate, she's getting there👍
Going like the clappers 🤗
Yeah mate! 👍
Running well, slowly but surely you're getting there
Thank you mate 👍

Yeah great styling hc's, I'm just cutting down mate, I'm not going them up 😄👍
I will do points gap then timing as it effects running. Points gap, timing them mixture
Steve, check you've got a spring washer/locking washer under the points screw they often fall off and the points slip .
I will do mate, thanks👍
Bananas and tea??? Great video Steve missed you last week mate
Yeah doesn't go together 😆thank you mate, appreciate it👍
Good to see you back buddy x
Thank you mate 👍
I know this sounds silly but I would put the fuel filter after the pump not before the pump. That's why it isn't filling up.
It's running great now mate this is an older video, she's been starting 1st time everytime, well maybe 3rd time when it's cold 😆👍
i used to have one myself, an estate, was a great car
Nice one Steve , always makes me laugh your antics , the noise from your clutch sounds like a dry ‘ spigot bearing. Gearbox out job 😢.
Thank you mate, appreciate it, if I have to change it, it will get done 👍
Great to see you back mate. Hope all is well. Quality content as always
Thank you mate 👍
A good video mate
Thank you mate 👍

Do you know anyone with an exhaust gas analyser so you can set the mixture up?
I'm probably doing the mixture in the next vid mate 👍
Doesn't look as tho you've got your gearbox mounting fastened mate, that won't be helping.
No I've not put the bolt back on yet mate, I should have realy, the amount of times I've been under there 😆
