I’m far from a watch snob. But I was wearing my submariner last week at a get together, and this guy saw it and said “man I can’t stand Rolex”. So I asked what he was wearing, and of course he’s rocking a “diamond” encrusted 50mm invicta. I had to put him in his place. I don’t care what ppl wear, but don’t rip on watches with horological significance when you’re wearing an amazon special

Just ordered two cheap quartz watches at 75 euros each.
I also own some high end and mid tier pieces (4k-12k). Quite a few entry level pieces too (sub 3k).
I just love watches. I enjoy wearing them all, in a different way but all satisfying nonetheless.

@@eklavyaverma I think Oison is suggesting that a snob = a connoisseur, someone who appreciates and understands good wine, good watches, art etc. A pretentious person doesn't appreciate those things just wants them to stoke their ego and make them look important. Pretentious = ostentatious.

I purchased my first Rolex on impulse. I walked into a AD at the Roosevelt Field Mall (New York) two weeks before this Christmas and casually mentioned what I was looking for. I was planning on buying a Deep Sea, but not just yet. The lady walked away and to my surprise, a minute later came back with a black face DS 126660. Needless to say, I purchased it and here I am 6 months later and could not be more happy. You hit on the head Oisin. A watch, never mind a 14 K watch, has no practical purpose. Clocks are everywhere. Cheap watches are even more common. But I purchased mine because I love the engineering and craftsmanship, and yeah - a bit of exclusivity. Am I a snob? You bet. Love the channel. Keep up the good work.

Is Rolex really exclusive anymore? So many people want one and so many people have them...all economic stratifications. So many out there that Rolex really isn't that special anymore.

I remember a few years back watching a food network "star" on one of their programs mentioning how he was looking at a person's watch and how he made fun of it to another snob that the watch wasn't an "automatic" or a "mechanical" but a "quartz" movement watch. I lost respect for that person. He acted like he was so much "above" that person. Really disgusting.

    • @peterhendrickson1571
      @peterhendrickson1571 3 роки тому

I think I know exactly what scene/person you are talking about. I think he said something about looking at someones watch to see if the second sweep was "smooth" or if it ticked. I often do the same thing. If someone has an automatic watch I might start a conversation because we are both probably interested in watches, but if its not, then I don't and I assume they don't know any better or they just don't care about watches (ex. Bill Gates wears a sub $100 Casio diver). I know there are amazing quartz watches out there (some Grand Seikos for example) but if someone really likes watches and knows what they are talking about then they will most likely wear an automatic, regardless of the price point. The 'star' wouldn't say something condescending to the person, he is just using the observation to silently inform himself that the other person isn't 'in the know' when it comes to watches. Also, if you watch his program, you will see that he is an anti-snob when it comes to his profession. He eschews trendy, expensive tools over on-hand devices. He is very practical and knows seeks to share his knowledge. I don't particularly like the 'star' you are referring to or his show(s) but I do respect him because he is very knowledgeable about food and his (original) show is science based and devoid of the usual tropes. I could be totally wrong and he could be a huge jerk, but I don't think so.

When you buy expensive watches your buying the whole experience champagne etc. I'm lucky enough to have a Rolexs and tudors and I always get dressed up as it makes the experience better. I also own swatch watches and can walk in with shorts and t shirt on and no one in the store cares. It's all about knowing what your buying and enjoying the experience. It's not snobbery it's just manners.

As one who grew up in poverty and has worked himself into the upper middle class I appreciate the classes. It keeps me motivated to achieve more. Though I’m more of Omega/Rolex budget, own both, I’ve walked into dealers to try on Patek and Richard Mille and do not feel uncomfortable one bit. It’s just more inspiration. I will own a Patek one day. I also ride a a Harley and love Lynard Skynard. 😂 Very good content. Watched your last two videos and you’re two for two. Subscribed.

I appreciate your honesty ! As long as you don't treat other people badly there is nothing to be ashamed of, if you are rich and wealthy ! It is the personality and your character that makes you Human Being, not your money ! But, on the other side, there is jealousy ! If you show your good taste, your appreciation of fine things, your passion for art and craft by having a luxury watch, a nice pen, a suit... then people start thinking of you as of a snob, without knowing how hard you work and what else you gave up to pursue your passion. Passion is the strongest driving force to fulfill your dreams. Without passion I would consider myself a failure !

It's weird because I am the unwashed masses dude and I walked into a Patek AD and they treated me just like the rich Chinese guy in there who was buying 2 watches. Another Very Intelligent Post. Like me, You have an Intrinsic Understanding of Snobbery because you're A Celt!
I think it's important, however to appreciate the Nuances of Categories. There IS A Difference between Discernment, Exclusivity & Snobbery. Someone who can differentiate between Châteux Cardboard & Château Neuf Du Pâpe or an Omega 321 & 861 handwound mechanical chronograph movement has Discernment. Exclusivity whether of Viticultur or Horology is usually determined by money. If You're not holding The Necessary Spondulicks to purchase that Rolex GMT Ceramic Pepsi BLRO, You're Excluded from ownership. If You ARE holding The Necessary Folding but the Rolex Boutique won't sell You one - THAT'S Snobbery. I say, Patronize A Good 2nd-Hand Dealer & pay Ca$h.

Everything you said is true about watch snobbery. Great insight. Owning and wearing a Rolex or Patek Philippe or a few other brands is a status symbol. Like driving a Porsche, Audi, Rolls Royce or Bentley. And snobbery continues into other forms like Real Estate, travel and clothes. And like men, women enjoy their designer hand bags like men enjoy watches. Take for example, the Hermes Birkin bag. Like the Daytona of watches, these bags can cost at least $10,000 or more and are very hard to get. Louis Vitton is up there as well as Gucci.

Great video. I’m not the least bit rich but I’ve always loved watches and have a modest collection for the exact reasons you explained. Most people assume I’m part of that “1st class”. People make assumptions about me that aren’t actually correct. I think they assume I’m a snob or wealthy. I guess that’s what happens when you wear a nice watch or drink a nice wine or drive a nice car even if that’s the only thing in your life that you decide to spend your money on.

Really great post. This concept extends to lots of things. Interesting that you brought up Apple Watch. I have the same snobbery with regard to that because I enjoy and know luxury time pieces. I don't want a timepiece that everyone else has. But, interestingly, when it comes to the iPhone, AirPods, iPad, or laptop, I'm an Apple snob because the whole Apple un-boxing experience is superior to anything else. And the products live up to the un-boxing experience. I suspect that anyone that hasn't yet experienced that would call me a snob until they experience it for the first time. It's something to aspire to.

Great video and very very true. I’ll admit I’m a watch snob. We’re all snobby to some degree. However, there are levels to this snobbery game, and it’s important to stay in your lane. I wear a Rolex as it’s better than a Seiko, I drive a BMW as it’s better than a Toyota, and I wear Hugo Boss as it’s better than Zara. Yet there’s people out there who wear Patek because it’s better than Rolex, Drive a Ferrari because it’s better than a BMW and wear Louis Vuitton because it’s better than Hugo Boss. They’re absolutely right, and that sit’s fine with me.

Great thought provoking content. Rolex jealously guards it’s luxury status and rightly so. I bought a Datejust recently and the Sales woman was telling me in the AD that they no longer offer any zero percent interest deals or discounts. So Rolex want you to be the person that can drop 100% of the watch’s full retail price in one go right there and then. They don’t want just anybody with a credit card to swing by and leave with their product on their wrist. Make of this what you will - it could be seen as snobbery or just brand protection. They are gunning for the Patek market after all and if you buy a Rolex you’d like the assurance of that kind of aspiration protecting your investment. Also, Paul Thorpe an ex Dealer and watch expert was sitting with another seasoned dealer doing a live Q&A and they mentioned how the ultra ultra rich guy would just walk in through the door wearing just jeans and a leather jacket then drop eye watering amounts on the highest end pieces without a second thought. So the crazy luxury watch world we find ourselves in is a very broad church indeed.

There is a difference between snob and enthusiast. Snobbery is always a sign of insecurity, especially for those who don't have anything as a person but material things around them.
I don't buy brands not because it's unaffordable but simply because I don't pay for someone's tag to brand myself. Especially when some ugly things are sold based on fake scarcity.

It's only ridiculous to spend a lot of money on a watch if you cannot afford it. If you can afford the timepiece that you desire and appreciate, more power to you! There's a reason that these exquisite pieces cost so much, they are precise and beautiful! People love peeping through a keyhole watching others buying expensive watches and getting great satisfaction just by watching. Those calling the few who can afford things like Rolexes snobs are probably jealous. I love to watch...

@Angelo Soulas Ha! I actually have a 1989 Vostok Mini Komanderskie naval watch with a gorgeous teal-blue sunray dial that my husband gave me. He bought it himself from an American military officer who was in Berlin when the Wall came down, crossed over into East Germany to buy a few souvenirs, and decided later to sell some of them. It’s probably not valuable, and the bezel is not even uni-directional, so I definitely wouldn’t trust it for actual diving, but it’s beautiful in my eyes, has sentimental value since it was a gift from my husband, and has a good story behind it. So far, no one has recognized it when I’ve worn it out and about - at least, no one who has commented on it to me. I hope it doesn’t “scare” anyone who does recognize it!

Very fresh perspective. Snobbery is a relative thing depending who we are engaging with. Sometime even sharing of your passionate topic without putting anything/anyone down can be seen as snobbery because others see your knowledge as too intimidating. I ever have someone ask me to help him buy a $20/$30 Rolex replica. I said I don't do that and I became a snob. When I start to explain with a bit more I can recommend seiko/timex but I soon realised I'm just talking to a wall.

It's not snobbery to appreciate and pay for craftsmanship, quality, or luxury. That's just being an aficionado and something anyone can become if they have the passion. It becomes snobbery when you judge others based on what they can appreciate or afford. That doesn't belong in the watch world...or anywhere.

Totally disagree with you. Being discerning or having an appreciation for fine things is not snobbery. Snobbery is an attitude (most of the time condescending and pretentious). I have no time for snobs.

I agree. I love the mechanical movement..... Nothing wrong with a quartz, but to me quartz is a shortcut. To make gears, file down a case and parts you can barely see with the naked eye is art.

I absolutely agree with you. And as long as nobody "punches down" on anyone, then being a snob is ok. It's when the watch snob punches down on someone for having a brand of watch not to his liking that the snobbery is now bad. And this also goes both ways (reverse watch snob). As long as you respect each other's watch choice then all is ok.

I think I saw you making a video under Galileo's Tower in Padova. I was passing by with a loud vintage BMW motorcycle ahaha.. hope it didn't ruin the video ;) really great work!

Ahah. Yes but don’t worry. Lots of people & cars passing that day. No way to avoid it. Thanks for watching! Padova episode coming soon!

Could you do a channel or series of video's about getting started in wine? What to look for? What things are good to try on the cheap until you figure out what you like and then maybe move up the tiers?

This video is so spot on, local AD's where I am are not upscale enough, they generally don't even have a place to sit (you are just standing at the counter). Big turn off. If I am going to spend, 5/15/30k on a watch, I want a relaxed, smooth, comfortable experience. Otherwise I would just buy online or rock a G-Shock.

I don't think "snob" is exclusively a punch upward. I have seen an AP owner calls a Rolex owner a watch snob before because a Rolex owner talk shit about someone else's cheaper watch.

Lots of good comments. To me, there is nothing wrong with being a bit discriminating about the purchases you make, and the style with which you try to live, but “snobbery” is more about how you treat others.....especially those who may not be as fortunate. I worked hard to be in a position where I can now afford some of the better things.

Great post that I enjoyed very much, but I think the definition of a snob is someone who looks down on a person they regard as being of a lower social standing. I don't think you do this at all. You don't look down on someone who buys cheap watch - you enjoy fine watches for what they are which is an entirely different thing. And you appreciate how fortunate you are. Nothing in this great video says you are a snob! I'm certain there are watch snobs out there, but I wouldn't watch this superb channel if I thought you were one of them! Super video. I would have loved to have seen you in conversation with the late great David Niven.

I agree that understanding and keeping high standards is appropriate in many fields, like watches. I think the snobbery comes in when you treat people with distain because they don't share your particular passions, or have less knowledge and investment in something. I don't look down on people because they know less about watches them I do. There are many people who know more than me.

It's a thing, it exists. The same with cars and motorbikes. I'm speaking from a British perspective.
It was quite stark when I moved to France. I bought a Honda Shadow, a 125cc because I don't have a full bike licence and can't be arsed spending the time and money to get one and the narrow country lanes suit it...but what I discovered is there's no snobbery amongst the bikers over there. They are happy with a new Triumph but will happily ride a Solex. Gatherings have all sorts there. New, old, immaculate, ratty. One more reason to love France

This is so right . Didn’t think I was a watch snob until someone like Oisin can put it in to words and analogies. It’s a great feeling to be treat like a king , even if it’s for a couple of hours while spending your hard earned . My wife’s not a watch snob either but she does like to drive her 50k car to work and back twice a week 😉

Went to an IWC AD at the South Coast Plaza in Orange County, CA, I was wearing my shorts, t-shirt, and flip flops wearing my apple watch. They paid no attention to me. So I left and drove home in Porsche Panamera 4 turbo. Good luck IWC.

@ Sure do. Great episode, for the most part your video is spot on. I have a friend who owns a Lambo dealarship in Orange County, CA. He always tells me that the person coming in the flip flops and t-shirts buy the $500k car vs. the 3 piece suit guy.

Most people will be happy to take your money, but there might be a few situations where that is not be the case. This conversation reminds me of Beverly Hillbillies. The show was all about a down-to-earth bunch of hillbillies that became filthy rich on oil and moved to Beverly Hills. It was a great and funny lesson in what really matters.

I own a number of Rolex watches and am quite an enthusiast. On occasions a conversation on Rolex arises and I go nuts with excitement and start talking about my collection. I’m expecting the same excitement from the person I’m speaking with but sadly on many occasion I notice their looking at me like I’m a world class ass hole snob. That’s where I usually check myself and say never mind and walk away feeling like a world class asshole snob. Oh , to be so misunderstood.

Snobbery and discriminating taste are not the same thing. Snobbery is when you are a guest at someone's home and you refuse to drink the sub-par wine they offer you, if not secretly. Discriminating tastes would be to enjoy the sub-par wine as not to offend your host.
