This was the song nobody wanted to record. It was written with Simple Minds in mind, but they turned it down because they didn't want to record something they didn't write. Then Bryan Ferry turned it down, then Billy Idol turned it down (can you just imagine him singing this?), and on and on. Finally, Simple Minds relented and knocked out a quick recording, which of course became their biggest hit and arguably one of the most popular songs to come out of the 80s. From the soundtrack of (not arguably) the best movie to come out of the 80s.
This was both the intro and outro song for the '80s movie The Breakfast Club. It was the quintessential teen movie of the era. As counselors, I think you both would like the movie. As the movie opens, this song plays as we see a quote from David Bowie. "And these children that you spit upon as they try to change their world are immune to your consultations. They're quite aware of what they're going through." Great song coupled with a great movie. Thank you for reacting to this one.
Or more of an indictment of the public's music taste: The Smiths very rarely charted in the top 10 in the 1980s, and it wasn't because greater music was beating them out.
@@ChristopherStendeck What is funny about this song is that the lead singer didn't want to do this song since they didn't write it ! It was his wife Chrissie Hyndes of the Pretenders that talked him into doing it ! Billy Idol was supposed to be the singer on this but he didn't like it !
This song was made for the movie The Breakfast Club where teenagers from different social circles get stuck in saturday detention. They become friends, but will they greet each other on monday or will they ignore each other and stick with their other friends?
March 24, 1984; the day that 5 completely different teenagers learned about social differences and became friends! The Breakfast Club is a must-watch movie!
Simple Minds had lots of hits (Alive And Kicking, Belfast Child, New Gold Dream, Waterfront, Promised You A Miracle, Sanctify Yourself, She's A River,...), but IMO their best stuff is on the Live In The City Of Lights album. The live versions of Oh Jungleland, Once Upon A Time, Ghostdancing and Book Of Brilliant Things are fantastic.
Great reaction. I am very familiar with this song since childhood. It’s very strange that while watching your reaction I thought to myself ‘this song could be covered in a variety of styles and still sound good. Acoustic, country, reggae, hard rock, etc. anything’. And then she says almost the same thing afterwards during the comments. Wow. It is a very clever and catchy song. I also noticed how strangely it is arranged for a western pop song. It starts off with an intro, then only 1 verse and 1 chorus. Then it goes straight into an extended bridge before repeating the INTRO then going into the 2nd verse/chorus. VERY clever and it reminds me of stuff The Beatles did with their songs.
If you were alive in the 80’s then you have heard this song. Or if you’ve ever watched The Breakfast Club which is one of the greatest 80’s movies there is.
Thank you for doing this song...i love this band...love you guys reactions....thank you for doing my pick.. it is a great feel good song and that keyboard riff is to die for...if you liked this then try the song alive and kicking by this same band
As many have said a great song from a great movie " The Breakfast Club"! John Hughes wrote and/or directed many great movies in the 80's that were packed with great music! I recommend you watch his movies! Great stuff!

Heavy metal.
Dear Mr. Vernon, we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. But we think you're crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us - in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain... Andrew Clark : ...and an athlete... Allison Reynolds : ...and a basket case... Claire Standish : ...a princess... John Bender : ...and a criminal. Brian Johnson : Does that answer your question? Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Club.
Hmmm... fun to do reactions to covers that you like better than the originals! Blinded by the light, Mannfred Mann’s Earthband’s, cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Blinded by the Light....? Anyone? How about Yes’ cover of Paul Simon’s America?
I know your doubts BUT there is a great great cover from dont you. Original is great. And life of agony did a cover which i think is perfect. (Bit more rock)

Billy idol actually recorded a version of this song
@@dioneberts1715 yup. It's on his greatest hits album.
Apparently Billy Idol just "didn't get it" and thought the song and the movie wouldn't be a success. Oops!
Nice reaction from you both great song great band from Scotland

John Hughes .made so many awesome movies I love 'Uncle Buck'
Lead singer Jim Kerr was married to The Pretenders lead singer Chrissie Hynde from 1984 to 1990.
Simple minds alive and kicking
It says a lot about the abundance of great music in the 80s that this song peaked at number 7 in the UK.
@Celtic Revival / Adfywiad Celtaidd Glad to see someone appreciate it! ...and nice to see someone beating the drum for our ancient culture.
Or more of an indictment of the public's music taste: The Smiths very rarely charted in the top 10 in the 1980s, and it wasn't because greater music was beating them out.
This was #1 in the US for 3 weeks which was Simple Minds only #1.

It's the bands energy, their Aura & their emotional passion/deliverance that Captures me with this song.

Whether you like to admit it or not. This song defined the 1980s. This song can’t be covered...I totally agree.

No other song takes me back to that time more than this one.
