In the 70's, some good music was still coming from here in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The sound at the beginning of the song is a wind chime; in the U.S., they're usually found hanging from the ceiling of a house's porch, especially in rural areas. From the sound of that one, it's probably some sort of glass or crystal. There are wind chimes made from other materials, but I think the glass/crystal ones make the nicest sounds.

What's cool about the Doobie Brothers they are like 2 totally different bands like when the original lead singer Tom Johnston was there they were like a southern rock style band then when he left Michael McDonald came it and change them with more of an R&B/soul light rock sound so you kind of get a variety when you listen to the Doobie hits collection. I dig both styles they both were successful.

As a quick reference, you might consider the Mississippi River in the same way as The Ganges but perhaps without the same overt religious meaning. It bisects the continental United States starting at the headwaters in the State of Minnesota flowing down to New Orleans in the state of Louisiana. It had served as almost a “super highway” for merchants in an earlier time. It has nearly a spiritual aspect to it for those who live on/near it and those Americans tend to be sentimental about it. I would (gently) point out to my American companions here that the river has a significant impact on even midwesterners and I would be hard-pressed to concede the Mississippi River is just a “southern thang.” It’s a big river, friends. Fished and rafted on it as a kid myself, I did. Lots of history and mystery on that river. Saluting you.

Mississippi starts way up in the Great Lakes, so used to be the first big boundary between the Eastern part of the country and the new western territory, was major way to move everything from upper mid west down to the Gulf of Mexico before the railroads were built to connect to the two coasts. And I remember the first time I saw the Mississippi in person, it is visually stunning, but it was also the emotional resonance that it held to my midwestern parents.

Also, the Mississippi is also known as Mighty Muddy Mississippi. The blackness is mostly from the rich, deep earth that flows into the river from the fertile farmlands surrounding.
So well done, you two... I enjoy watching your reactions so much!

Like someone else said, he is singing about the Mississippi River at nighttime and the water looks black in the dark ... and he's floating on a raft that he built ... and the Mississippi moon is shining its light on him ... and the catfish are jumping ... and he sees a large paddlewheel boat pass by on the river, too. Awesome song and vocals and musicianship. It was a big No. 1 hit on the radio in the U.S. back in 1975 when I was in grade school. Thanks for reacting to it. Brings back fun memories.

Doobies have a lot of fun tunes. Great musicians.
Weekends with young Americans often are parties. In all states. Louisiana sells liquor almost everywhere but church. Fishing and drinking beer go hand in hand. Good times when you watch your Ps and Qs.

As an American child of the 1970's, the Doobie Brothers were such an important part of the fabric of rock music along with CCR and Skynyrd. Give them a listen.....they have a ton of amazing songs with a bit of southern soul. Love the diversity of your channel.

I love this song a lot. I used to play over and over. “If it rains I don’t care don’t make no difference to me” is such a sweet part of the song. It touches my soul. I love the Doobie brothers. They were a very diverse band. They are from my hometown in San Jose CA. So we’re proud of them. Thank you for your reactions.

"And I ain't got no worries cuz I ain't in no hurry at aaaaall..." WOW does the world need songs with this feel-good vibe desperately right now! It makes me wonder if the world is in the horrible state it's in for a lack thereof. But it's no wonder most anyone 25 or older can be found scrambling back in time for music from the way gone past like this. Everything for the last 25 years is agenda-driven, and utterly rotten to the soul.

this is my favorite song by the "Doobie Brothers" - so sweet and well-done... I really appreciate that you not only listened, but used headphones -- some songs just NEED them - like... ANY song by Queen - (my most favorite band) - it's always a pleasure to see your reactions to everything, though... thank you!

Sweet, well done, unique, perfectly crafted, and most importantly to what makes a song stand apart, relatable in a powerful way to the human experience. Imagery and a feel that is genuine, and in this song's case, very happy and pleasant.

WOOHOO!!!!! Thank you thank you thank you for reviewing the Doobies, you made my day!! Their catalog is full of the greatest songs and this has always been one of my all time favorites since I heard it back in '74. Country rock was treated with suspicion by the pure country bands and fans at the time, even though it had strong elements of country and western but it did draw a lot of fans from other genres to bluegrass and country.....

Loved your genuine reaction to this song. I was a young kid when the song came out and I would play this 45 single from my brother's singles collection a million times, just waiting for the acapella vocal breakdown at the end. Brings back great memories!! Patrick Simmons wrote this one. He doesn't get as much attention as Tom Johnston or Michael McDonald for contributing music for this band. He wrote another favorite of mine too: "Jesus Is Just Alright".

Tell Kirti I think she may have the prettiest smile ever. By the way. I think you may be ready for more" Shooting Star." Try "Flesh and Blood" I promise you will love the song and it's Message. Did you just say that you don't think anyone could say they don't like country music? That might be the most wrong statement in music history. "I love all music except country" might be the most common answer to the "that type of music do you like" question. Having said that...this is not considered country music.
