    Life too short for long UA-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
    Welcome to the show! Ohmergaaaaaahd, a show actually about pedals?! Yes, we know that TPS has a habit of veering off down a conceptual road or two, where the focus can be anything //but// pedals. Well strap yourself in as Mick ‘Baxter Basics’ Taylor and Dan ‘Norm Alshow’ Steinhardt tackle a handful of recent releases that are definitely, unequivocally and without doubt, guitar effects pedals. Erm, except one of them thinks it’s an amp.
    How could we possibly get lost with these? Let’s give it a try…
    Enjoy the show!

    Thanks for showing off my new MAULER fuzz!
    It has a pair of “metal can” BC108C silicon transistors.
    The MAUL control sets the input impedance and tonal filtering… lower is softer with more clean-up, higher is more attacking with overdrive like clean-up, and right at the top it kicks in a low pass filter for smoother input response.
    MEAT sets the bass input filtering.
    FURR gives three different textures and tonal responses.
    JAWS is the bias, from gated and spitting, through squashy and saturated to bold and open.
    The FEED momentary footswitch kicks in the internal feedback oscillation, which interacts and fights with your input signal. All controls of the pedal and your guitar affect the feedback pitch and response.
    🤘🏾🐻

    While I know that you don't do direct tests for amp sims, the UA Ruby direct is magic. I think that putting it through a non-Vox amp is makeing the setup work against itself. The Ruby is an accurate Vox AC-30 sim and a Deluxe Reverb, etc. in the chain removes much/all of that character.
    If you haven't seen it by now, you might like to see Rhett Shull 's "The BIGGEST Amp Shootout I've Ever Tried (UA FX Vs. Real Vintage Amps)". That's what helped me decide to get a Ruby.
    I use it direct (Focusrite "Scarlett"), and it works very well, indeed. That vid also demonstrates the UA "Dream 65" (Deluxe Reverb) and UA "Woodrow" (Tweed) sims very well.
    I no longer use an amp at home. I don't miss it and I don't miss annoying my wife and her reaction to that, either.
    Ahh, domestic tranquility.
    Cheers.

      Just about to receive my Ruby. I couldn’t be more stoked despite these 2 gents not liking amp modeling. Curious to see what you think of the others. I’m so happy to see you’re using these in front of an amp, which I’m doing too.

    • @nilsx3020
      @nilsx3020 2 роки тому +9

      After seeing their less than excited reaction here, I think all hope is lost for Dan and Mick to dig any amp modeling as good as it may be. Lol. However, to be fair it must be said that putting the Ruby or the other 2 UA amp pedals in front of 2 vastly different valve amps without having looked at the pedal before won’t get you the best results these pedals can possibly bring. That said, that’s how I plan to use my Ruby…
      Even UA’s 3 pedal effects from last year didn’t seem to get much love, as outstanding as the Golden reverb and Starlight delay are.

  • @Les537
    @Les537 2 роки тому +4

    You can do justice and a proper review of the UA amp pedals by using them in the FX loop of an amp in place of the amplifier pre-amp. Rock on, boys.

    Great show guys! Love to just see some new pedals! The UAD stuff is interesting because it's so simple- not a hundred models to choose from- just one very detailed, great sounding amp in a box. There are a lot of existing options these days for digital amp sims, so I think it's smart for UAD to go in a bit of a different- simpler and more straight forward direction.

    • @nilsx3020
      @nilsx3020 2 роки тому +4

      @@gffg387 I agree. But that’s due to their incorrect use case, the way their rig is set up and recorded. It totally defeats the purpose to run this into a dual amp setup, that’s intended to be mic’d and then also use the cab sims at times. It didn’t seem like they even plugged this in before this lol.

    • @gffg387
      @gffg387 2 роки тому +3

      @@nilsx3020 I agree. They tried to pass a Vox into a dual set up with a blackface fender and a supro. Well, it serves to show that these pedals doesn't work as stomp boxes into other amps. Better to use like an real amp, like I've heard on other demos.

    love the show! I fully respect you two gents preferring real amps to amp sims, and quite agree with your reasons. I do honestly feel that the Ruby was used in a way that doesn't get across what all the hype is about around these new pedals. Having it in the signal chain going into the front end of the amp is definitely an option to be utilized but it's far from the main scenario of actually using it in place of an amp. I have the Dream65 and these pedals seems to be a whole new beast that got thrown under the rug in this episode.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  Рік тому +2

      We get that Robert,but a pattern has emerged whenever we use amp sims. First, the reason for it sounding average is that ‘you’re not using it right’ and second, me and Dan sit there dying inside because we know people have worked hard to make it sound great, for great many other people, these things are the only viable option. And as you suggest, they can sound great.
      But Dan and I decided after this video that we’re done with amp sims for the foreseeable.
      We did try them the ‘correct’ way too, but we just don’t like them compared with real, loud amps. And to underline that, I still have never heard a digital amp sim in recorded or live music that I prefer to a real amp mic’d. If that situation changes for either of us, we’ll start featuring them again. Just two personal opinions, we know millions of people love em. Cheers!

    Thanks for plugging in to real amps and micing them up...that's what I fell in love with many years ago and thats what I love about TPS. More power to those who use and like the amp simulators. But given a choice, they just aren't for me (and I've tried'em). "You can settle for second best but you can never get enough" is a saying that applies to me and amp/speaker modeling. But plug into a real amp, dial it in and I'm 100% there man. I can feel it down to my core.

  • @justinguitarcia

    The UA amp stuff is fascinating. When the room and cab sim are on it sounds like you are playing inside a record. I think the they would serve convincingly as a budget amp/cab/microphone collection for a home studio.
    Nothing beats the experience of the real thing but i think with the right user you can record a pretty good sounding home record using the UA stuff and itll be silent. I still see it as a compromise but a pretty good one

    That Revv drive sounds ace. One of my favourite uses for a boost before a drive is as an underdrive, I feel like it lets the drive retain all of its character and tonal colour with both on for rhythm sounds and then turn off the boost for the drive to kick up a level. Pretty unconventional use for it but give it a go, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised :)

    For gigs (other than my own) I use primarily a multi-effects pedal with amp, cab, and effects simulations because life is, after all, truly requiring of some compromise. And having done so for my for my convenience the result regularly outweighs a listener expectations. When I want to be be for me I take an amp and a pedal board - both of which I have tweaked to suit my ears and no one else's. I come back to this channel regularly in hopes of learning better how to make the best use of what I can afford. I am regularly informed and have make several changes to my board with little cash outlay. So, in contrast to some other's comments, I have not been enticed to spend more but more wisely.

    Tore (I apologize for spelling if it’s wrong - the guy who used to work at TC) from UA on the Thomann channel said that on the stereo out, the pedal creates 2 distinct amp instances albeit with the same settings, and so you get the micro variances between the to amps and their respective outputs. I don’t think you can set them differently, but it sounded like in stereo, there are 2 diff amps running on each output… so prob not really what you were hoping for with independent control…but…

    I dug the 12-string again. 🤘Ruby - in fairness, kind of running an amp preamp into an amp preamp, and you got more out of that than I would have thought. If you had gone the route of trying it in an amp loop, you still have that thing where a lot of the amp sound is the output transformer, and then you are kind of stacking 2 output transformers, so that's not going to sound like the amp either. Same issue with the Synergy stuff. It might work great direct, but that stuff will never work like a good old tube amp as a whole. Glad you guys covered it though.

    Very much enjoyed the return of a purely pedal-focused show, thanks gents. Bit of a shame about the Ruby, I'm not sure that the way it was configured for this demo is consistent with its design ethos and intent. I'm a big fan of modelling in my situation, it's a matter of compromise for sure, but it works for me, I can generally get tones out of it that I'm happy with. That said, it's not for everyone.
    I can't help but feel that whenever you play with any type of modelling or DI-type tech, you just don't gel with it, which must be a challenge and frustrating to do. I imagine there's a bit of a pull for you to use this stuff from time to time as it's becoming more and more prevalent and I can see there's a fair few of the TPS audience asking for you to try it. I almost wonder though if you just have to say, "f**k it. This stuff works for some but not for us, it doesn't make us happy, so we're just not going to mess with it anymore" There's definitely something very contagious about watching you both play something that gets your fire burning, that's why I watch at least.

      That’s exactly where we are Chris. We’d defy //anyone// to come here and not prefer real, loud amps. But. We also get it’s just not possible for the vast majority of people. It’s a cul de sac of lose:lose for us. So probably just best to leave it alone. Cheers!

      @@ThatPedalShow you're spot on, there's something special about playing through a real amp at volume. And as much as the technology continues to advance, it will never feel the same under the fingers, it will never replace the physical sensation of the air around you responding. It's addictive and it enriches the soul. I'm so grateful I've had decades of experiencing it. Unfortunately I've had to give up the amps for now, in my situation I need the flexibility, ease of use, variety of sounds and, most crucially, occasional silence, that comes with an amp-less rig. But I love that both philosophies can exist and that there are people like you both who continue to demonstrate exactly why amps and valves are important and timeless. We don't have a lot of time, best to use what we do have doing what fills us with joy.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  2 роки тому +3

      Yeah we feel the ‘pain’ of having to leave the amps behind. And for some people it’s definitely the opposite of pain because they never really loved em in the first place. We totally agree that it’s not for everyone and any approach that gets you playing and makes you happy is AWESOME. We’re spoiled though. We made TPS in a large part because we wanted a place to play loud and stay connected to the thing we love almost more than any other. We are definitely slipping in to the minority and truth be told we’re kinda happy with that. Because if anyone is ever in any doubt that modelling really does sound like the real thing, hopefully they’ll be able to visit the handful of real amp users still left breathing and get and in person demonstration that it really doesn’t. I wish I could record it, but you have to be in the room. It’s all good! Whatever makes you/us/everyone happy!

    I would propose a verrrry interesting theme for the next video. The successful mods for Deluxe Reverb - such a speaker replacement (12``, 15`` & 4x10``), circuit modifications etc. But for that case, of-course, you need to build a handwired version of this amp, because the reissue version it's very hard for modifications. All you need is AMP, for my opinion.

    Kind of bummed about the presentation of the Ruby. Why would you put that into the front end of an amp? I thought for sure it would go into the effects loop return… Sort of like a Kingsley petal. I’m not surprised the high end is off.

    • @ThatPedalShow

      UA suggest putting it into the front of the amp as the start point. But yeah, apparently a 4 cable method approach where it hits the FX return will have it sounding better. Hey Wim,
      The Mauler is a vintage(ish) style fuzz, so interacts highly with your guitar’s passive pickups and controls. So it needs to “see” your passive signal without buffers between to sound as designed. (But it may still sound cool after some other pedals).
      For a fuzz that performs nicely anywhere in your signal chain, then check out my ROARER (which is also due a Monochrome style reboot pretty soon).
