My Amano shrimp like to go on field trips around my house. Before I put a tight lid on my aquarium, I found my shrimp about 100ft away from his tank. He went down 2 flights of stairs! I picked him up, plopped him back in, and he’s still going strong 😂
What! Hahah, that's wild. I had a ghost shrimp hop out of the tank and it plopped on the counter and stayed like a little shrimp putty until I carefully put them back in the water. Can't imagine any shrimp just out and about walking around! 😆
Amano shrimp aren't available in my area. I ended up with 9 cherry shrimp as part of a private plant deal. The guy was selling live plant cuttings, but the minimum amount was $20 worth. I didn't need that much, so he offered to give me less cuttings plus the cherry shrimp for the $20. Two months later, I still have the cherry shrimp. We rarely see more than one or two at a time, but once we were thrilled to see a "shrimp parade" with 5 of them walking across the aquarium.
Lol if you get your parameters right and supplement the minerals in the tank, you can get your shrimp population to explode! That is if you have at least one female.

Both of them are in my planted axlotol tank and they were the perfect addition. The Amano's tend to be more "intelligent" and avoid the axlotols better
Amano is simply amazing for keeping your tank clean. I had two of these lil' fellas in a 100 litre tank with a serious algea problem and within 3 weeks it was spotless. They got to all the places snails wouldn't touch and they did a much more detailed job.

I bought two Amano and I enjoy watching the 2 of them. I bought a few neocardina, and now after giving away dozens I have several hundred across three tanks. And the colors that I'm getting have changed and diverged in separated populations that were all started with the same few shrimp.
Yes I agree I like the Amano shrimp better, they just seem to have more character with their little legs always busy & on the go. I think they're prettier too, with their distinctive markings and bigger tail :)
I've had two ammonos in my tank for goodness knows how long. One finally passed on a few months ago, but the other one as been around...for around 4+ years...at least!! I've truly lost track of how long that guy has lived. I named him T1000 because of his color, and I think it's so apt, as he seems well nigh indestructible! I've heard that they can last a long time, as they are not inbred to death, but wow! I saw the even longer lived one feed upside down facing the surface of the water. So amazing. It blows my mind when I see that; it reminds me how differently gravity works underwater, especially with tiny critters like that! Cherries are pretty, but, like most shrimp, they tend not to last long. So many shrimp are hopelssly inbred, and so their genetics are garbage and they don't last long :(
Bought a pack of 10 amano shrimps ranging from 1/2 to 1 inch last year and they seemingly "vanished" in my aquarium. I was happy today to spot one of my amanos in my tank that has now grown over 2 1/2 inches. He came out of nowhere during feeding time and took off with a whole shrimp pellet.
This answered pretty much all of my questions about Amano shrimp. I was hoping that they would be large enough to not become fast food for the tank i'm planning which is going to be mostly platies, albino cory cats, and mayyybe a single male betta. Basically a very pedestrian community tank.
GTF is my favorite thing on UA-cam. I have cherries in my planted tank with neons and corys. I expected the shrimp to breed but no babies yet. But I do see a new cory sneaking out of the rocks every couple of months so at least something in the tanks is breeding.
My larger tanks have amano, my smaller tanks have cherry - I love both for different reasons. The amano shrimp are jerks tho & will swim off with an entire wafer nearly big as them meant for my goby's/corys. I've seen them actually wrestle the wafer away from my other critters & "attack" (hilarious to watch) in competition for food. Example: Curious (Gardneri) killifish checking out food that ended up at bottom of tank....amano jumps on his face, killifish swims off confused, amano snags the tasty tidbit. Nobody messes with my amanos lol! I've had to get creative making sure my bottom feeders get enough to eat. Also, if my hand is in the tank, I inevitably end up with 1 or 2 amano shrimp crawling on it & picking away. Those teeny-tiny pincers they use feel so funky on skin.
Great video, thank you so much for that. I've had both types, but the cherry shrimp population died off at one point unfortunately. I have both but love them equally. I didn’t understand how aggressive the Amanos are about their food, and I have 5 ginormous females in 10 gallons with my betta and Bloody Marys. I would not recommend that many in a small tank, I really have to stay on top of feeding them.Thugs! You are spot on about spreading food around. Most of my Amanos come up for hand feeding when the betta gets fed, and they still squabble over food. LOL
I loving cherry shrimp so far, I'm breeding the bloody mary atm and they are thriving. The color is amazing. In addition to that, it sells really well. For Amano, I just put 2 of them in my 10-gallon tank just to make sure everything is clean. Like you said both of them have different purposes.
I have 100s in my tank, and they keep breeding! Had it for nearly a year now so there are so many mature adults. I need to start selling them, how good are profits?
I know I’ve got 2 5 gallons right next to each other. The one that’s right by the window has 2 amanos, the glass isn’t clean but it’s clear and I can easily see them moving around. I actually think that tank has become self-sufficient because aside from adding water I don’t need to do anything with it aside from refilling it as water evaporates, the shrimp eat the algae, the algae eat the shrimp waste and photosynthesize. The one that’s farther from the window has no shrimp and grows great carpets of algae on the walls that I have to clean. The only downside to amanos is I had a plant in my window aquarium to help eat the fish wastes and the shrimp completely devoured it.
I like and have both. Cherries are cute and small and it's really fun to be able to see the whole breeding process. Amanos can get quite large and are absolute machines with cleaning a tank. Because they're big, they're easy to see and observe. I can only put larger amanos with my betta since he likes to eat cherry shrimps. For a species only tank, cherries are the way to go. For a community tank, I prefer larger amanos since they can't get eaten by the most popular tropical fish.
I have several cherry shrimps (orange sakira, Blue Dream, regular red, and Green Jade color) in my 5 Gallon tank. I just placed an order, yesterday, for a vampire shrimp to put in my 55 gallon tank.
I’ve had Amano shrimp but I haven’t had cherry shrimp yet but I will very soon What I really love about both of these shrimp is they can’t cross breed so you can have them in a tank together🦐💙🔥
Omg I wish I watched this video before posting on Reddit about my “amano” shrimp giving birth to rainbow shrimp 😅😂 she was transparent when I first got her and she had a brown spot pattern on her back too!
if you're an aqua scaper you'll be looking at amano, if you want some red colours and if you keep good water for breeding purposes and to make some money on the side then its neo reds. However, it;s not quite as simple breeding shrimp, you need good consistent water and a healthy environment. I've bred both neo and caradina and both need good consistent parameters. oh and volume and size of tank is very relevant.
I bought 2 amano shrimp for my 55gal (they ran out). One night, I was sitting on a tuffet, watching my preferred fish and play. Along came an amano shrimp, formicine and eerily limp, that scared my bejeezus away. I assume they have both hopped out by now, though I did see one last week.
I didn't realise that "fancy" shrimp is very expensive in the West. Just recently I bought cherry shrimps for just a little under 2$... FOR 150 OF THEM. Though it is the cheapest I can find and for "normal"(slightly to kinda red) ones. If you aren't really searching, it's usually about 4¢ each In my country.
GET OUT OF MY HEAD! LOL, I have cherry shrimp, but I have wanted both bamboo and Amano shrimp for quite some time and I just started digging into my research on the Amanos today!
My amanos jumped tank and made it about 25 feet out of my room, through living room, and a couple made it into kitchen. (There is a lid). Was crazy to me they made it out of tank, crawled across carpet and then traveled across the hardwood floor to kitchen.
I got a group of 4 cherry shrimp to take care of brown algae in my betta tank because the color looked great with my koi betta and plants. Of course the next day I could only find 3 and a betta with a full belly🙄🙄🙄 I think amano shrimp might work better due to size and semi translucence so wish me luck!
Good information! I was interested in Amanos, but I’m afraid they might outcompete my Habrosa Corydoras for food. I already have two female guppies in the tank that hog the pellets!
I have amanos in with guppies and a honey gourami. The amanos will definitely each grab a sinking pellet and carry it away to eat. If they can reach and carry two, they'll do that too! But then it takes a while for them to eat. I break softer pellets in halves, quarters or more and spread them round the tank so everyone gets some.
If you want, that should certainly do the trick, and keep your colony overall brighter. However, it Isn't necessary, and the brightness of your shrimp should not effect their health or wellbeing at all. It just comes down to personal preference. It is a decent way to keep the population down, while making your colony overall more appealing though.
@@uniteagainstthefitnah moving them to another tank, away from the colony or giving them to someone who wants shrimps in their aquarium has the same effect...
i think i like amano shrimp more. thats because how i enjoy looking at a tank i think. i like understocked tanks as they resemble nature to me a lot more. you dont go out to a lake or river, take a peak and see like 100 shrimps sitting on 60cm area. i actually enjoy not seeing stuff all the time because it makes you for them and then you re happy once you found them. i think seeing a shrimp or 2 here and there feels alot more relaxed than seeing an army of shrimps all the time. i rather have more variety in stock. instead of having a big shrimp colony, rather have a few amano, a snail or 2 and a handfull of fish so the tank just feels more rounded
How did you know that I was JUST considering adding shrimp to my 10 gallon betta tank??? Sounds like the Amano would be the way to go in my situation. I need a good algae and biofilm eater, something big enough that won't be an easy snack, and I really don't want a million of them lol
Hi, I have a question. I´m new in aquarium hobby and I would lke to add betta to my 20gallon aquarium. I was watching lot of videos about the tank mates and I have neon tetras kuhli loaches and I want to buy cherry shrimp. And than, I would like to buy betta. But my loaches are really active. Everyone on youtebe was saying that kuhli loaches are shy and stay hidden, but I have four kuhli and they are swimming all over the aquarium. So the question is: will that be a problem that they are that active? Thanks :) And also, if you don't think it's the best idea to have these fish together, I'd be happy to hear your opinions and advice. it's my first aquarium and I fell in love with kuhli loaches, cherry shrimps and bettas and I wanted to have them, hopefully it's ok
I will keep RCS in an only shrimp tank, white sand and i would try to mix Amanos with some Celestial Pearl Danios in a heavy planted tank with dark substrate!
Bought 12 amano shrimp for my 29 gallon aquarium with developing black beard algae. Unfortunately, I did not expect them to be eaten by mollies or small angelfish which I have with a few guppies, albino corys, and a few otos. Within 3 days all the shrimp were gone even though I have a good lid on my aquarium. Keep finding skeletons around as I clean. And, I still am dealing with the algae. So, no more shrimp for me--an expensive snack.
Excellent videos. I have three broods of shrimplets so far and can't wait until they mature - goal is to have my 20 gal long tank exploding with shrimp! 🙂
Thank you for the information Now i know Amano shrimp is what i need for my 6 gallon tank with my betta, and I don’t need to worry about them breeding out of control
I have Amano shrimp with my Axolotols and they co exist just fine. Lots of hiding places for the Amanos and they do very well. I find the Amano shrimp are far more intelligent then the Cherries and tend to last a lot longer. My brother and I also have a 20gallon planted with cherries and ghost shrimp and they do very well together.
I always recommend betta fish for that size. I wouldn't put any other fish per-se in that tank, as it is a tad too small and may stress your betta. You could try various types of snails, or invertebrates- which are a good addition for smaller betta tanks. I wouldn't put any livebearers, or tetras in a tank that small. They're quick fish, and I've noticed they do better in tanks around 10 gallons or more.
I'm definitely going to be getting cherry shrimp for my tank, probably buying from my father-in-law because he breeds them. They will be paired with guppies as tank mates. I also want a separate tank for my ghost shrimp, Carl, and any potential mates we might get him.

Koy or goldfish
Orfe or koi

I actually think that tank has become self-sufficient because aside from adding water I don’t need to do anything with it aside from refilling it as water evaporates, the shrimp eat the algae, the algae eat the shrimp waste and photosynthesize. The one that’s farther from the window has no shrimp and grows great carpets of algae on the walls that I have to clean.
The only downside to amanos is I had a plant in my window aquarium to help eat the fish wastes and the shrimp completely devoured it.
This channel gives me life
😊
I've got a female Amano shrimp I've had since my day 1 tank, over 10 years old!
Wow! That’s impressive :D
I love amanos for blackwater and cherries for planted tanks
I would love to see a comparison between Guppies vs Plattys
Amanos are fascinating to watch eat. It’s like some type of farm equipment
Love the vids keep up the good work
I’ve had Amano shrimp but I haven’t had cherry shrimp yet but I will very soon What I really love about both of these shrimp is they can’t cross breed so you can have them in a tank together🦐💙🔥
i have a question for the plants they way you have kept in aquarium. how did you do that? my soil would scatter and make the water dirty
For a second I thought these two shrimp were gonna fight
Omg I wish I watched this video before posting on Reddit about my “amano” shrimp giving birth to rainbow shrimp 😅😂 she was transparent when I first got her and she had a brown spot pattern on her back too!
Amano shrimp live much longer and are much more resilient than neocaridina shrimp. I've never had one live less than 4 years.
if you're an aqua scaper you'll be looking at amano, if you want some red colours and if you keep good water for breeding purposes and to make some money on the side then its neo reds. However, it;s not quite as simple breeding shrimp, you need good consistent water and a healthy environment. I've bred both neo and caradina and both need good consistent parameters. oh and volume and size of tank is very relevant.
A really fun and informative video!
I had amanos that lived for 7 and a half years:)
What?
Thanks for the info! I might try and breed some cherry shrimp in the future for my local fish store in a 29 gallon tank!
I didn't realise that "fancy" shrimp is very expensive in the West.
Just recently I bought cherry shrimps for just a little under 2$...
FOR 150 OF THEM. Though it is the cheapest I can find and for "normal"(slightly to kinda red) ones. If you aren't really searching, it's usually about 4¢ each In my country.
lol one fire red cherry shrimp was 7 dollars for me
Love the content and the info therein
GET OUT OF MY HEAD! LOL, I have cherry shrimp, but I have wanted both bamboo and Amano shrimp for quite some time and I just started digging into my research on the Amanos today!
My amanos jumped tank and made it about 25 feet out of my room, through living room, and a couple made it into kitchen. (There is a lid). Was crazy to me they made it out of tank, crawled across carpet and then traveled across the hardwood floor to kitchen.
Great video. Thanks for the info and honest assessment 😎
I definitely appreciate Amano shrimp more for all the reasons you stated.
As long as you let your shrimp grow they are fine I have amano shrimp in a tank with 4 dwarf gourami
I have a 10-gallon tank w 5 zebra danios. I'd like to add a 'cleaner' tankmate - perhaps a shrimp or snail? Any recommendations?
I like amano shrimp and I know my boss Cory likes pink ramshorn snails. 👍
@@GirlTalksFish thank you!! i love your videos.
Should i cull the less colored cherry shrimp to keep the colony bright?
depends if u care about the colour.
@@wishleopard3946 feeling evil doing it tho 😔
@@uniteagainstthefitnah moving them to another tank, away from the colony or giving them to someone who wants shrimps in their aquarium has the same effect...
@@uniteagainstthefitnah You could try rehoming them, or selling them at a lower price then they usually average.
Thanks for a great review.
2:55 are you saying in your correction they are going to like below freezing point?
I love ammanos personality. I keep ammanos with all my other shrimp
i think i like amano shrimp more. thats because how i enjoy looking at a tank i think. i like understocked tanks as they resemble nature to me a lot more. you dont go out to a lake or river, take a peak and see like 100 shrimps sitting on 60cm area. i actually enjoy not seeing stuff all the time because it makes you for them and then you re happy once you found them. i think seeing a shrimp or 2 here and there feels alot more relaxed than seeing an army of shrimps all the time. i rather have more variety in stock. instead of having a big shrimp colony, rather have a few amano, a snail or 2 and a handfull of fish so the tank just feels more rounded
How did you know that I was JUST considering adding shrimp to my 10 gallon betta tank??? Sounds like the Amano would be the way to go in my situation. I need a good algae and biofilm eater, something big enough that won't be an easy snack, and I really don't want a million of them lol
Definitely not cherry shrimp with a betta, maybe an amano or a couple snails
Betta fish vs Pea Puffer
Nano/tiny fish with attitude or which are highly intelligent
thanks for the info, you always give give point that I don't think of and so I'm getting cherry shrimp most likely
I loved keeping ember tetras with my Cherry shrimp and mystery snails 🐌 :-)
I have both of these and I love them both. Noticed my first pregnant female cheery shrimp today
Please anyone clarify my doubt do cherry shrimp eat it's fry and guppy fry? Is it ok to put them in guppy fry tank?
Thank you for the information
Now i know Amano shrimp is what i need for my 6 gallon tank with my betta, and I don’t need to worry about them breeding out of control
So witch should you recomend for a betta tank
I have Amano shrimp with my Axolotols and they co exist just fine. Lots of hiding places for the Amanos and they do very well. I find the Amano shrimp are far more intelligent then the Cherries and tend to last a lot longer.
My brother and I also have a 20gallon planted with cherries and ghost shrimp and they do very well together.
Hi love your vids and formation - but I see you’ve got yo yo loaches with shrimp? I thought the yo yo would eat them ?
I like both I’ve found the Amano clean the tank better🦐
What is the difference between pumpkin shrimp and Sunkist?
YOU HAVE A REALLY DEEP VOICE.
My amano shrimp are about 5 years old. I keep thinking they're finally gone, but then they pop back up just chewing on algae.
Hey i know this question isn't related to the video, but what are some good 6 gallon stocking ideas?
A betta, 2-3 male endlers or guppies are a few good stocking ideas.
@@randomperson97238 Thanks
@@wishleopard3946 Thanks
Great video and well presented. Thanks 👍
Very informative,. Thank you.
Love your tank! What substrate is that?
Nice video! Do you know if the Caridina Pareparensis Parvidentata are good as the amano shrimp for eating algae?
I absolutely love shrimp i really wish i could add some in my planted discus tank
I'm definitely going to be getting cherry shrimp for my tank, probably buying from my father-in-law because he breeds them. They will be paired with guppies as tank mates. I also want a separate tank for my ghost shrimp, Carl, and any potential mates we might get him.
