These coarse filters and the air stones are SO much better than the ones I was using. I can't believe how quiet they are! And I can hide them with an Anubias and they totally blend in. The filter-picking critters even like them better. NOW please, do a nerdy version where you explain lift, and best placement in a tank with one or two filters for different size tanks. LIke 1 filter in a 10 gal; 1 filter in 45Tall, 2 filters in 60 long, etc. LOVED the other filter where you show the cleaning process and water the plants. Thanks!
I'll see if I can tackle that some day in the future. But if you have one, center of the aquarium as much as makes sense with decor. If you have two, about 1/3 in from each end is best. Mostly it's about just having them, I like to hide behind plants as well and they'll work in any position well enough.
I was convinced the longer, internal airline was the only way to optimize flow. Thanks for the education! I'm going to fix them all my next water change.
As always there’s so many ways to do everything in the hobby. A longer tube, more air, larger diameter can all be done but with outstanding which lever you are pulling, it usually lowers efficiency.

I'd like to make a suggestion to you. About 25 years back I had just started dating the woman I eventually married and I gave her a 55 gallon tank I wasn't using. It had a really nice stand and matching wooden top that I had built so it was an excellent piece of furniture that fit in a nitch in her den. She had never had fish before so I took her out and bought about a one or two dozen african cichlid fry. I didn't want the tank to be any real work for her as a novice so I purchased two of the coffee can sized sponge filters. If you notice most are large enough at the top to put a section of 1" pvc and it fits tightly. I cut the pvc about four inches short of the top of the tank and placed a power head on each one. No noisy air pumps that vibrate all over the place and no filter floss to change out frequently. I gave her one set of directions. Each week draw out around four gallons of water, pull out one sponge filter and wash it out in the old water, then put it back in the tank and replace the four gallons with fresh water. Swapping which filter you cleaned every week. That tank stayed crystal clear for years and the fish grew to adult size healthy and happy. You don't need the air bubbles flowing up for oxygen exchange just the water flow across the surface from the power heads. I will say this will work best in a much deeper front to back tanks where you can hide the filters behind rocks or plants so they don't show.
Thanks for the next level advice. I switched to sponge filters after first subscribing and learning more about them. Now I can optimumize their functioning.

It's a good idea but Cory is a smart guy. I learn a lot from him about fish and business, I think there are two main reasons. 1. It would increase the overall cost / price by quite a bit. Ziss is the maker of the never clogs, he has someone build the sponges for him. This means he would have to pay someone at the warehouse to sit there and cut tubing, open never clogs, install them and repackage. 2. Not worth the cost trade off because half of the reason he did his own sponges was to create flexibility for people. That Said...Cory, you guys should definitely sell component parts, such as different size lift tubes.
I just set up the large size with the air stone and the aquarium Co-op tubing. This video was perfect for giving me all the info I needed and walking me through step-by-step. The customer service is amazing, hi Candi
Just got the one I ordered and installed it today. It came very fast and I am extremely impressed with the quality. I especially like that it’s weighted. Really well. It is my very first sponge filter, after seeing so many reviews and people recommending them I decided to give it a try. It’s so nice that we can refer to these videos for help with the set up. I’m still getting a bubble come out from the top of the sponge every once and awhile. I made sure the tube to the air stone really short as directed in the video. I’m sure I just some fine tuning to do. I hope I put it in the proper place within my aquarium, that was my biggest question. Time will tell!!! ☺️👍 🧽
Been keeping fish since 1967, I have to say this is the first time using this product and it is super great, love it, works great. Does exactly as described in video by Corey. Bought all the necessary supplies from the Aquarium Co-Op at a decent price, including the double pump. Adding a system to each of my tanks one by one.
Cory straight up - I dont need a sponge filter right now. But god damn man you are doing a service to the aquarium community so if I need to order something I order from you. This will be my next sponge when a project calls for one.

I get my food, medicine, sponge filters, air tubing, etc from them. Their prices are often better than Amazon ... you just have to wait longer for delivery; sometimes a week.
I bought these after seeing it cause i was tired of buying replacement filters. And it turn out to be the BEST purchase for my tank keeps it super clean, clear and quiet!!
Another reason to avoid the glug and surface splash, in addition to keeping things quiet, is to minimize mineral deposits on the canopy and nearby tubes or a heater.
I will be changing the length of tubing on the airstone. I saw another video that said to have it as long as possible and I have always had escaping nubbles. Thanks Cory.
I have multiple aquarium co-op sponge filters. I love them. I have prefilters on my hob filters, but I like the fine sponges for those better because they are for tanks with smaller fish and fry. Thanks for all of the education and advancement of the hobby that you do, Cory
nope I love the bubbling noise too. and im not the only one. it's kinda like listening to the sound of rain, the ocean etc, its a water sound to me so it's nice!

I thought that too but search long enough and you can find most of the stuff here in the UK, apart from HOB filters? They don't seem to be very popular over here maybe someone can explain why?

I finally decided to upgrade my sponge filters, decided to buy all Aquarium Co-op kind, with the airstones you recommended. Can't wait to set it up in one of my new tanks
I purchased one of your sponge filters and one of the USB air pumps for my 5 gallon betta tank. The thing is a champ and I'm very happy with how it is working.
Very informative, and timely for me, too. I just bought some of your gear, including a sponge filter, to set up a QT tank and have never used a sponge filter before. I like the ability to optimize and tweak it for my use, the tips on how to clean are great as well. Thanks!
A couple months ago, I rescued a large black moor goldy, and had to set up an emergency tank to house him. I didn’t have a spare filter and didn’t have the cash on hand to buy one. Nowhere around where I live sells sponge filters, so I built one with a pvc pipe, a spare air pump, and a pond pump prefilter sponge. It is a total workhorse, but after watching this I could optimize it. Now it works even better.
When I get my bigger tank (either 20 long or 29) I will do the same simply because I have African Clawed Frogs and they are messy! I have the 20 gallon one in my 10 gallon tank right now because I felt like the 10 gallon one I had wasn't enough. My tank kept getting cloudy and stinky (plus it was a fine mesh one and not a coarse mesh one) and now my water is clear and beautiful!
Thankyou so much cory. I just recently started using sponge filters and I wasn't sure why I was having problems with my air. Btw this video is going to end up viral.
WOW...I setup my entire fish room (25 tanks) with all of your sponge filters with the Ziss airstones. Because I'm a genius ...NOT...I didn't bother reading the directions...its a sponge filter after all...after watching this video I just learned I did them all wrong....too long of airline to attach air stone. Thank you for this and now IM off to dismantle all of them and fix them. Love the coarse sponge it works great!
Ugh, I can't stand the fine sponge filters. I got tired of cleaning them every week and they get so slimy...yuck! Looking forward to getting these for sure!
What I learned from this video: I’m an oddball that cleans my prefilter sponges every week. I’m weird because I love fine sponges. I’m the fringe element that doesn’t like air driven sponge filters. I’m ostracized from society because I run one filter with coarse sponges for biological and one filter with fine sponges for mechanical. I’m a fish nerd because I am watching this video and commenting on it while wearing a “Cooperative” shirt.
omg i'm so happy and excited for this video, lol. i can never stop learning about fish care, esp when it comes to guppies. i have 3 sponge filters, 3 never clog airstones and the black airline tubing from the aquarium co op, love them!!!!!!
Corey I love your sponge filters! In my larger tank I would put an extra sponge in so it becomes seeded for the next aquarium. I use this for any size sponge. I think that the person deciding between sponge and HOB's may have more to do with optics. I don't think there is a more Shrimp friendly filter than a sponge filter, but it is not as glamorous as the others. Have a great week!
😂😂"if you like fine ones, well im sorry for that" .. lmao dang what a burn, my fine one polishes that water like filter floss lol but yes it does need more regular maintenance
Wow.. this is super helpful! - I’m trying to run a small sponge filter in a shallow tank (I have no critters yet - only plants)… and the options and explanations you have shown and made are simply the best..l can now experiment and see what the best solution will be… thanks for the positivity.. you rock!
My buddy just put me on to y’all’s sponge filters and never clog air stones. My only regret is not knowing about them sooner. My bettas are happier with the sponge filter over the HOB and my I’m getting rid of the canister filter in my other tank for another sponge filter. You guys have some Amazing products.
Thank you so much! I have had your sponge filters with the air stone wrong for months. I always wondered why the bubbles were coming out the sides. SMH!!! Fixed now & it’s perfect. I just ordered more air stones, more prefilter sponges, & a couple more sponge filters from your site.
Great video, I do have your filters for a few months and I love them. The only thing I did was put a big piece of pipe on the stone. Will be cutting it down.
Just checked out your website and it is awesome!!! Everything is so affordable, your prices can't be beat!...I've learned so much from your videos,...i will definitely be make an order very soon! Thank you for always sharing your knowledge!!
Thank you for the great video. I totally didn't realize that I've got mine hooked up wrong, I have the airline tubing hooked up to the top nozzle without an airstone inside.

Brilliant can't bye then because I live in Ireland I would bye them if they were sold here
Know anyone in the states that would buy it and ship it to you?
@@loganmcphearson6496 I did but he passed away 😔
So talk to Cory about your business plan for distribution in Ireland. 😉
I've bought stuff from the UK and they just shipped it here????
If you pay the shipping and sponge filter then I will send them as long as it is legal. I hate to see people not get these wonderful filters
Thanks!
Spectacular demonstration and comprehensive detail on the subject! Thanks so much for sharing this much information regarding your sponge filters!
I like the huge sponge filter that Dean had shown before😂
A couple months ago, I rescued a large black moor goldy, and had to set up an emergency tank to house him.
Best filters I have ever had... I use 2 20s in my 20 long... I like filtration 😁
Thanks for making this video! I have 2 of your sponge filters and have been using them for almost a year and just found out I'm doing it all wrong lol
My betta's fins kept getting snagged on this coarse sponge filter so I switched back to the fine sponge🤷♀️ The shrimp love it too.
Info top notch and Jimmy's editing had me cracking up thumbs up all around
love how this guy can spend 20 minutes talking about a sponge filter
Thankyou so much cory. I just recently started using sponge filters and I wasn't sure why I was having problems with my air. Btw this video is going to end up viral.
Just curious, but will you ever make your store ship to Canada because I would love to order stuff but I can’t. Great video though
Ocd got me reaching in my tank and double checking haha 😄. You guys are amazing, Aloha!
The best thing is that it won’t injure fish, my Bolivian Ram almost died when I got stuck behind my filter intake
THANK YOU for adding the subject titles! Was able to go to exactly where I needed to watch.
Newbie here. I’m learning so much from you Corey. Thanks!
What I learned from this video:
I’m an oddball that cleans my prefilter sponges every week.
Catfish Cave I do a course pre filter and a fine polisher in the well. Clean water by the fish can still come eat their left overs..
omg i'm so happy and excited for this video, lol. i can never stop learning about fish care, esp when it comes to guppies. i have 3 sponge filters, 3 never clog airstones and the black airline tubing from the aquarium co op, love them!!!!!!
👋👽
Feels like just got scolded now starts redoing all my sponge filters lol
Corey I love your sponge filters! In my larger tank I would put an extra sponge in so it becomes seeded for the next aquarium. I use this for any size sponge. I think that the person deciding between sponge and HOB's may have more to do with optics.
I don't think there is a more Shrimp friendly filter than a sponge filter, but it is not as glamorous as the others. Have a great week!
😂😂"if you like fine ones, well im sorry for that" .. lmao dang what a burn, my fine one polishes that water like filter floss lol but yes it does need more regular maintenance
Best video in a while, well done!!!
I really don't know why i watched a video about sponge filters as i am never going to need one but that was as interersting as it could get
Wow.. this is super helpful! - I’m trying to run a small sponge filter in a shallow tank (I have no critters yet - only plants)… and the options and explanations you have shown and made are simply the best..l can now experiment and see what the best solution will be… thanks for the positivity.. you rock!
Sciency is good, sciency is fun, sciency keeps me from going "but why?".
Big fan of sponge filter especially in a planted tank. Thx ...great video.
Wow, I couldn't believe the price when I checked! I thought it would be a lot more expensive. Great informative video, great product, great price.
Absolutely best sponge filter video you'll ever see.
Thank you for this video! I just got a sponge filter and was wondering how they worked. Thankfully I saw this before I tried to clean it!
Thank you for the great video. I totally didn't realize that I've got mine hooked up wrong, I have the airline tubing hooked up to the top nozzle without an airstone inside.
