    1st: There was no weapon prohibition in Germany at the time of the Messer.
    2nd: A Messer (-sword) is just a Falchion with a different grip (see Elmslie Typology).
    3rd: It is not 100% certain why this specific Falchion version was so prominent in the German lands, but it most likely has to do with guild law (this is kinda in the video). A knife maker was not allowed to make a sword but was absolutely allowed to make a knife of any size. This is where the German love for taking things exactly as is written down comes into play as a knife was defined in a certain way that allowed Messer (-swords) to be classified as knifes by guild law.
    4th: There are historical Messer still in existance with blades forged by the renown Solingen sword smith works which implies that this was not actually a dispute between the sword smith and knife maker guilds but rather a cooperation (at least at some point).

    Needs more of Anna and Anthony going at it full-speed. Also I'd like to see a video on proper saber fencing (as opposed to modern sport sabre fencing, which is entirely different). Cavalry style, you'd have to find a different expert and pay insurance on the horse. Maybe German Mensur academic fencing, where all the WWI and WWII German guys got the cool dueling scars? ... basically just two guys with three-foot razors (only the farthest 8" or so is sharp) standing at arm's length+half a sword length and it ends when somebody bleeds -- there's no competitive element, you just prove how badass you are by not flinching even if you get tagged.

    he's an educated man, but he's wrong, swords were not outlawed, they were mandatory at the time in most states of Germany. It is called a knife because of construction and the makers being knife makers. In fact, there was such a hullabaloo about it, that when the sword makers sued the knife makers, the knife makers conceded to exclusively use metal sourced from the sword guilds so as they would both turn a profit.

    The theory about right to carry a sword in cities is most certainly incorrect. In almost all (but 3-4 if I recall correctly) cities in germany, people of all classes were allowed to have and carry a sword. In certain parts of germany, peasents were actually encouraged to have weapons due to the concept of "Wehrhafte Bevölkerung" which means that the people were supposed to be armed and ready to defend the city. They even hat a Waffenschau (weapon inspection if translated losely) once in a while where peasents and citizens were visited and had to show their weaponry. It's actually documented. Nuernberg for instance was one of those cities. The "freie Reichsstadt Nürnberg".
    This was a bit the equivalent to England where people were required to train achery. They also were supposed to know how to shoot a bow in case of war.
    There are other theories however.
    A: It was a copyright thing. Only sword makers were allowed to make swords. That's why they were part of a guild. Knifemakers tried to get around this by inventing the Messer.
    This theory isn't proven either ofc.
    B: It was a fashion thing. It's possible and wouldn't be a first timer. But that's also only speculation.

    • @EntropicEcho
      @EntropicEcho 3 роки тому

      Exactly right! People weren't stupid then, so saying your "sword but without pommel" isnt actually a sword but a knife wouldn't fly. Also, there are sources of laws in other cities forbidding the carrying of blades, swords and knives above a certain length.

      why isn't this a more common thing honestly though. Like, for a second, imagine your a criminal and you want to rob a bank, in our current world, that's dangerous but overall possible, now imagine every person in that bank not only CAN, but is ENCOURAGED to have a glock, and some enthusiasts may even be packing some more heat than that. Sure, maybe most of them won't shoot, but bravery and stupidity share a fine line; in any given room there's always going to be at least a few idiots, and only one has to hit.

    btw some corrections on german terminology (from a native german):
    5:08 they are called "Langmesser" the mistake comes from the sentences like "so kämpft man mit dem langen Messer" which translates to "this is how you fight with the long knife"
    its because of grammar... i speak nearly gramatically perfect german but i have no clue how to describe the rules...
    its nitpicking, but "das Langmesser" belongs to the group "der langen Messer" because it is long. every "Langmesser" is a "langes Messer" but not every "langes Messer" is a "Langmesser".

I feel like the messer/düssack of Paulus Hector Mair and Joachim Meyer are far enough removed as to be their own separate field of study. If we're sticking to the 16th century Andre Paurñfeyndt's pieces on the messer are great as well. It's still an enjoyable video though!

      Agreed, Shad made a video (or was it 2, not sure) about the history of the messer and how it came about, basically it boils down to guilds, the messers were finished and sold by knife maker guilds and that's about it, nothing as fancy as avoiding the law.

    • @Vote4Drizzt
      @Vote4Drizzt 3 роки тому +4

      The argument I heard against the legal bit was that the states in which they lived were not nearly as governed by the exact words of a law as we are now, arguing details of your 3 foot crossguarded knife isnt going to do much good if the authorities and just go "but its obviously a sword" and lock you up anyway.
      I dont know that its not a distortion, I simply dont have time to prioritize studying their legal system but it seems equally plausible as the classic explanation

    • @zachmercer1065
      @zachmercer1065 3 роки тому +1

      @@Vote4Drizzt I mean people weren’t any more stupid back then than they are now, so yeah I believe the guards would have been intelligent enough to be like “yeah ok, and my Lucerne is a carpenter’s hammer.”
      If I’m not mistaken, the laws were indeed based on blade-length and not manufacturing methods. The book *The Martial Ethics in Early Modern Germany* discusses it at length.

  • @eldorados_lost_searcher
    @eldorados_lost_searcher 3 роки тому +1

    Not saying that no lords tried to disarm the peasantry through legislation, but I think the legal designation for a messer had more to do with its manufacture.
    The handle of the messer is more akin to a knife (tang riveted between the two pieces of the handle) and was made that way by messerschmitts, aka knife smiths. They may have built them that way to skirt regulations preventing them from competing with the various sword makers' guilds, as swords' tangs typically are surrounded by the grip and peened at the end.
    However, in a time of crisis such as an impending siege, I imagine no one would bat an eye over something like that.
    So they were made to get around the law, but it was more skirting proprietary manufacture methods than snubbing open carry prohibitions.

    Funny thing that whole theory on swords being illegal thing is bull.
    In "Germany" at the time (it was the holy Roman empire at the time) in all but two city-states it was perfectly legal to carry a sword. In many it was *required*. And in the two places where it was illegal it was based on sword length, not construction. "Cool knife, still illegal to carry".
